Isomorphism Conjecture for homotopy K-theory and groups acting on trees

We discuss an analogon to the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for homotopy algebraic K-theory. In particular, we prove that if a group G acts on a tree and all isotropy groups satisfy this conjecture, then G satisfies this conjecture. This result can be used to get rational injectivity results for the assembly map in the Farrell-Jones Conjecture in algebraic K-theory.

The Burnside Ring and Equivariant Stable Cohomotopy for Infinite Groups

After we have given a survey on the Burnside ring of a finite group, we discuss and analyze various extensions of this notion to infinite (discrete) groups. The first three are the finite-G-set-version, the inverse-limit-version and the covariant Burnside group. The most sophisticated one is the fourth definition as the equivariant zero-th cohomotopy of the classifying space for proper actions. In order to make sense of this definition we define equivariant cohomotopy groups of finite proper equivariant CW-complexes in terms of maps between the sphere bundles associated to equivariant vector bundles. We show that this yields an equivariant cohomology theory with a multiplicative structure. We formulate a version of the Segal Conjecture for infinite groups. All this is analogous and related to the question what are the possible extensions of the notion of the representation ring of a finite group to an infinite group. Here possible candidates are projective class groups, Swan groups and the equivariant topological K-theory of the classifying space for proper actions.

Survey on Classifying Spaces for Families of Subgroups

We define for a topological group G and a family of subgroups F two versions for the classifying space for the family F, the G-CW-version E_F(G) and the numerable G-space version J_F(G). They agree if G is discrete, or if G is a Lie group and each element in F compact, or if F is the family of compact subgroups. We discuss special geometric models for these spaces for the family of compact open groups in special cases such as almost connected groups G and word hyperbolic groups G. We deal with the question whether there are finite models, models of finite type, finite dimensional models. We also discuss the relevance of these spaces for the Baum-Connes Conjecture about the topological K-theory of the reduced group C^*-algebra, for the Farrell-Jones Conjecture about the algebraic K- and L-theory of group rings, for Completion Theorems and for classifying spaces for equivariant vector bundles and for other situations.

Commuting homotopy limits and smash products

In general the processes of taking a homotopy inverse limit of a diagram of spectra and smashing spectra with a fixed space do not commute. In this paper we investigate under what additional assumptions these two processes do commute. In fact we deal with an equivariant generalization which involves spectra and smash products over the orbit category of a discrete group. Such a situation naturally occurs if one studies the equivariant homology theory associated to topological cyclic homology. The main theorem of this paper will play a role in the generalization of the results obtained by Boekstedt, Hsiang and Madsen about the algebraic K-theory Novikov Conjecture to the assembly map for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups.

Groups of small homological dimension and the Atiyah Conjecture

A group G has homological dimension less or equal to 1 if it is locally free. We prove the converse provided that G satisfies the Atiyah Conjecture about L^2-Betti numbers. We also show that a finitely generated elementary amenable group G of cohomological dimension less or equal to 2 possesses a finite 2-dimensional model for BG and in particular that G is finitely presented and the trivial ZG-module Z has a 2-dimensional resolution by finitely generated free ZG-modules.

Equivariant Cohomological Chern Characters

We construct for an equivariant cohomology theory for proper equivariant CW-complexes an equivariant Chern character, provided that certain conditions about the coefficients are satisfied. These conditions are fulfilled if the coefficients of the equivariant cohomology theory possess a Mackey structure. Such a structure is present in many interesting examples.

Equivariant Euler characteristics and K-homology Euler classes for proper cocompact G-manifolds

Let G be a countable discrete group and let M be a smooth proper cocompact G-manifold without boundary. The Euler operator defines via Kasparov theory an element, called the equivariant Euler class, in the equivariant K-homology of M. The universal equivariant Euler characteristic of M, which lives in a group U^G(M), counts the equivariant cells of M, taking the component structure of the various fixed point sets into account. We construct a natural homomorphism from U^G(M) to the equivariant KO-homology of M. The main result of this paper says that this map sends the universal equivariant Euler characteristic to the equivariant Euler class. In particular this shows that there are no `higher' equivariant Euler characteristics. We show that, rationally, the equivariant Euler class carries the same information as the collection of the orbifold Euler characteristics of the components of the L-fixed point sets M^L, where L runs through the finite cyclic subgroups of G. However, we give an example of an action of the symmetric group S_3 on the 3-sphere for which the equivariant Euler class has order 2, so there is also some torsion information.

L^2-Invariants from the Algebraic Point of View

We give a survey on L^2-invariants such as L^2-Betti numbers and L^2-torsion taking an algebraic point of view. We discuss their basic definitions, properties and applications to problems arising in topology, geometry, group theory and K-theory.

The Ore condition, affiliated operators, and the lamplighter group

Let G be the wreath product of Z and Z/2, the so called lamplighter group and k a commutative ring. We show that kG does not have a classical ring of quotients (i.e. does not satisfy the Ore condition). This answers a Kourovka notebook problem. Assume that kG is contained in a ring R in which the element 1-x is invertible, with x a generator of Z considered as subset of G. Then R is not flat over kG. If k is the field of complex numbers, this applies in particular to the algebra UG of unbounded operators affiliated to the group von Neumann algebra of G. We present two proofs of these results. The second one is due to Warren Dicks, who, having seen our argument, found a much simpler and more elementary proof, which at the same time yielded a more general result than we had originally proved. Nevertheless, we present both proofs here, in the hope that the original arguments might be of use in some other context not yet known to us.

The p-chain spectral sequence

We introduce a new spectral sequence called the p-chain spectral sequence which converges to the (co-)homology of a contravariant C-space with coefficients in a covariant C-spectrum for a small category C. It is different from the corresponding Atiyah-Hirzebruch type spectral sequence. It can be used in combination with the Isomorphism Conjectures of Baum-Connes and Farrell-Jones to compute algebraic K- and L-groups of group rings and topological K-groups of reduced group C*-algebras.

The equivariant Lefschetz fixed point theorem for proper cocompact G-manifolds

Suppose one is given a discrete group G, a cocompact proper G-manifold M, and a G-self-map f of M. Then we introduce the equivariant Lefschetz class of f, which is globally defined in terms of cellular chain complexes, and the local equivariant Lefschetz class of f, which is locally defined in terms of fixed point data. We prove the equivariant Lefschetz fixed point theorem, which says that these two classes agree. As a special case, we prove an equivariant Poincare-Hopf Theorem, computing the universal equivariant Euler characteristic in terms of the zeros of an equivariant vector field, and also obtain an orbifold Lefschetz fixed point theorem. Finally, we prove a realization theorem for universal equivariant Euler characteristics.

Approximating L^2-signatures by their compact analogues

:Let G be a group together with an descending nested sequence of normal subgroups G=G_0, G_1, G_2 G_3, ... of finite index [G:G_k] such the intersection of the G_k-s is the trivial group. Let (X,Y) be a compact 4n-dimensional Poincare' pair and p: (\bar{X},\bar{Y}) \to (X,Y) be a G-covering, i.e. normal covering with G as deck transformation group. We get associated $G/_k$-coverings (X_k,Y_k) \to (X,Y). We prove that sign^{(2)}(\bar{X},\bar{Y}) = lim_{k\to\infty} \frac{sign(X_k,Y_k)}{[G : G_k]}, where sign or sign^{(2)} is the signature or L^2-signature, respectively, and the convergence of the right side for any such sequence (G_k)_k is part of the statement.

On the cut and paste property of higher signatures of a closed oriented manifold

We extend the notion of the symmetric signature $σ(\bar{M},r)$ in L^n(R) for a compact n-dimensional manifold M without boundary, a reference map r from M to BG and a homomorphism of rings with involutions from ZG to R to the case with boundary $\partial M$, where $(\bar{M},\bar{\partial M}) \to (M,\partial M)$ is the G-covering associated to r. We need the assumption that $C_*(\bar{\partial M}) \otimes_{\zz G} R$ isR-chain homotopy equivalent to a R-chain complex D_* with trivial m-th differential for n = 2m resp. n = 2m+1. Let Z be a closed oriented manifold with reference map BG. Let F be a cutting codimension one submanifold in Z and let $\bar{F} \to F$ be the associated $G$-covering. Denote by $α_m(\bar{F})$ the m-th Novikov-Shubin invariant and by $b_m^{(2)}(\bar{F})$ the m-th L^2-Betti number. We use $σ(\bar{M},r)$ to prove the additivity (or cut and paste property) of the higher signatures of Z if we have $α_m(\bar{F}) = \infty^+$ in the case n = 2m and, in the case n = 2m+1, if we have $α_m(\bar{F}) = \infty^+$ and $b_m^{(2)}(\bar{F}) = 0$. We give examples, where these conditions are not satisfied and additivity fails. Our work is motivated by the one of Leichtnam-Lott-Piazza, Lott and Weinberger.

Dimension theory of arbitrary modules over finite von Neumann algebras and applications to $L^2$-Betti numbers

We define for arbitrary modules over a finite von Neumann algebra $\cala$ a dimension taking values in $[0,\infty]$ which extends the classical notion of von Neumann dimension for finitely generated projective $\cala$-modules and inherits all its useful properties such as additivity, cofinality and continuity. This allows to define $L^2$-Betti numbers for arbitrary topological spaces with an action of a discrete group $Γ$ extending the well-known definition for regular coverings of compact manifolds. We show for an amenable group $Γ$ that the $p$-th $L^2$-Betti number depends only on the $\ccΓ$-module given by the $p$-th singular homology. Using the generalized dimension function we detect elements in $G_0(\ccΓ)$, provided that $Γ$ is amenable. We investigate the class of groups for which the zero-th and first $L^2$-Betti numbers resp. all $L^2$-Betti numbers vanish. We study $L^2$-Euler characteristics and introduce for a discrete group $Γ$ its Burnside group extending the classical notions of Burnside ring and Burnside ring congruences for finite $Γ$. Torsion and fibrations

We study the behaviour of analytic torsion under smooth fibrations. Namely, let F \to E \to^{f} B be a smooth fiber bundle of connected closed oriented smooth manifolds and let $V$ be a flat vector bundle over $E$. Assume that $E$ and $B$ come with Riemannian metrics and $V$ comes with a unimodular (not necessarily flat) Riemannian metric. Let $ρ_{an}(E;V)$ be the analytic torsion of $E$ with coefficients in $V$ and let $\Pf_B$ be the Pfaffian $\dim(B)$-form. Let $H^q_{dR}(F;V)$ be the flat vector bundle over $B$ whose fiber over $b \in B$ is $H^q_{dR}(F_b;V)$ with the Riemannian metric which comes from the Hilbert space structure on the space of harmonic forms induced by the Riemannian metrics. Let $ρ_{an}(B;H^q_{dR}(F;V))$ be the analytic torsion of $B$ with coefficients in this bundle. The Leray-Serre spectral sequence for deRham cohomology determines a certain correction term $ρ^{Serre}_{dR}(f)$. We prove $ρ_{an}(E;V) = \int_B ρ_{an}(F_b;V) \cdot \Pf_B + \sum_{q} (-1)^q \cdot ρ_{an}(B;H^q_{dR}(F;V)) + ρ^{Serre}_{dR}(f)$.
