Krylov complexity has it all

This paper establishes that Krylov complexity contains the entire information about the dynamics of a quantum operator, extending the list of equivalent quantities that can serve this purpose, such as the Lanczos coefficients, the return amplitude, and the spectral density. To demonstrate this equivalence, an explicit recursive algorithm is constructed to calculate Lanczos coefficients from the Taylor expansion of the Krylov complexity around $t=0$. Furthermore, the paper discusses the distinction between Krylov and spread complexity, clarifying why a similar recursive algorithm cannot exist for the latter without additional dynamical input. These results provide a ``proof of principle'' for using Krylov complexity as a complete characterization of operator evolution in quantum systems.

Central Singularity of Three-Dimensional Kerr-de Sitter Black Holes

For three-dimensional Kerr-de Sitter space-time, we find the singular energy-momentum and spin tensor sources that generate the non-trivial geometry. The energy-momentum tensor is symmetric, conserved and compatible with a spinning massive point particle whose mass and angular velocity we determine. The calculation is based on the analysis of the holonomy for a closed loop around the singularity of the $SO(1,3)$ Chern-Simons gauge field appropriate for gravity in the presence of a positive cosmological constant. This holonomy is related, via the non-abelian Stokes theorem, to the singular source terms at the center. Our results may be helpful for a better understanding of the algebra of observables of a local observer in the Kerr-de Sitter space-time.

Vacuum configuration of winding superstrings from non-standard semiclassical quantization

Semiclassical quantization techniques are unreliable, if the magnitude of the quantum fluctuations becomes comparable with a classical background scale. This is the case, for example, for superstrings at temperatures close to the Hagedorn temperature. Here, we propose a non-standard treatment which aims to extend the semiclassical approach for type-II superstrings to such cases. This allows us to provide a well-posed reformulation of recent computations of the Hagedorn temperature in a large class of confining gauge theories. Along the way, we fill a gap in the literature by proving that the standard semiclassical one-loop partition function of the Green-Schwarz superstring can be made finite, by means of a suitable choice of integration measures, for any background worldsheet in a target spacetime satisfying the (type-IIA) supergravity field equations.

Hagedorn temperature in holography: world-sheet and effective approaches

We provide general results on the Hagedorn temperature of planar, strongly coupled confining gauge theories holographically dual to type II superstring models on curved backgrounds with Ramond-Ramond and Kalb-Ramond fluxes and non-trivial dilaton. For exact backgrounds the Hagedorn temperature is determined up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (NNNLO) in an expansion in $α'$; in all the other cases the results can be safely trusted up to NNLO. To reach these goals we exploit two complementary approaches. On the one hand, we perform an extrapolation to the Hagedorn regime of world-sheet results obtained from the semiclassical quantization of string configurations winding around the compact Euclidean time direction. En passant, we provide a detailed derivation of the fermionic part of the world-sheet spectrum, which is hard to find in the literature. On the other hand, we perturbatively solve the equations of motion for the thermal scalar field corresponding to the lightest mode of the winding string, which in flat space becomes tachyonic above the Hagedorn temperature. The interplay between different approaches is surely convenient, but we provide insights about a possible derivation of the whole NNLO correction to the Hagedorn temperature from a pure world-sheet perspective; furthermore, we determine the effective mass of the thermal scalar from the world-sheet in full generality.

Black Holes and Marchenko-Pastur Distribution

The universal eigenvalue distribution characterizing the Gram matrix of semiclassical ensembles of black hole microstates is recognized as the Marchenko-Pastur distribution, which plays a prominent role as the universal limit distribution in a large class of random matrix and vector models. It is proposed that this distribution also universally determines the energy spectral density of black holes, which allows to construct a Krylov space for the time evolution of typical black hole states and calculate their state complexity. It is checked that the state complexity growth at late times saturates Lloyd's bound. Some implications of the proposed spectral density for the generation of Hawking radiation and black hole evaporation are discussed.

Beyond AdS$_2$/dCFT$_1$: Insertions in Two Wilson Loops

We consider two-point correlators of local operator insertions in a system of two Wilson-Maldacena loops in ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on both sides of the AdS/CFT correspondence. On the holographic side the correlator of two Wilson-Maldacena loops is given by a classical string world-sheet which in one phase connects two asymptotically AdS$_2$ regions and in the other phase is given by two disconnected AdS$_2$ caps; this configuration breaks supersymmetry as well as conformal invariance. We present a complete systematic account of the string world-sheet fluctuations, including the fermionic sector, and study the behavior of the holographic two-point correlators. On the field theory side we compute certain two-point correlators of local operator insertions by resumming sets of ladder diagrams. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of previously developed methods in tackling this non-conformal, non-susy regime.

Semiclassical Quantization of the Superstring and Hagedorn Temperature

In a recent paper [1], the semiclassical quantization of a string, winding once around the compact Euclidean time circle, on a supergravity background dual to the deep infrared regime of a confining finite temperature gauge theory, was carried out. The string mass-shell condition and, by extrapolation, the Hagedorn temperature to leading order in the holographic limit was deduced. In this work, we improve on those results in three ways. First, we fix some missing details of the related light-cone quantization analysis. Second, we reconsider the problem under the lens of a background-covariant geometrical formalism. This allows us to put the semiclassical mass-shell condition on more solid grounds. Finally, going beyond the semiclassical regime, we compute the Hagedorn temperature at next-to-leading order in the holographic limit. The sub-leading correction turns out to arise entirely from the contribution of the zero modes of the massive worldsheet scalar fields. Our result matches that of a recent analysis in the literature based on the Horowitz-Polchinski stringy star effective model.

Krylov complexity and orthogonal polynomials

Krylov complexity measures operator growth with respect to a basis, which is adapted to the Heisenberg time evolution. The construction of that basis relies on the Lanczos algorithm, also known as the recursion method. The mathematics of Krylov complexity can be described in terms of orthogonal polynomials. We provide a pedagogical introduction to the subject and work out analytically a number of examples involving the classical orthogonal polynomials, polynomials of the Hahn class, and the Tricomi-Carlitz polynomials.

Reparameterization Dependence and Holographic Complexity of Black Holes

We refine the calculation of holographic complexity of black holes in the complexity equals action approach by applying the recently introduced criterion that the action of any causal diamond in static vacuum regions must vanish identically. This criterion fixes empty anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime as the reference state with vanishing complexity and renders holographic complexity explicitly finite in all the cases we consider. The cases considered here include the Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole, the rotating BTZ black hole, the Kerr-AdS black hole, and AdS-Vaidya spacetime. The criterion is equivalent to imposing that the corner contributions vanish. Contrary to earlier results, we find that the generalized Lloyd bound always holds in the Reissner-Nordström-AdS and BTZ cases.

Exact 1/N expansion of Wilson loop correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory

Supersymmetric circular Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory are discussed starting from their Gaussian matrix model representations. Previous results on the generating functions of Wilson loops are reviewed and extended to the more general case of two different loop contours, which is necessary to discuss coincident loops with opposite orientations. A combinatorial formula representing the connected correlators of multiply wound Wilson loops in terms of the matrix model solution is derived. Two new results are obtained on the expectation value of the circular Wilson loop, the expansion of which into a series in $1/N$ and to all orders in the 't~Hooft coupling $λ$ was derived by Drukker and Gross about twenty years ago. The connected correlators of two multiply wound Wilson loops with arbitrary winding numbers are calculated as a series in $1/N$. The coefficient functions are derived not only as power series in $λ$, but also to all orders in $λ$ by expressing them in terms of the coefficients of the Drukker and Gross series. This provides an efficient way to calculate the $1/N$ series, which can probably be generalized to higher-point correlators.

Reparameterization Dependence is Useful for Holographic Complexity

Holographic complexity in the "complexity equals action" approach is reconsidered relaxing the requirement of reparameterization invariance of the action with the prescription that the action vanish in any vacuum causal diamond. This implies that vacuum anti-de Sitter space plays the role of the reference state. Moreover, the complexity of an anti-de Sitter-Schwarzschild black hole becomes intrinsically finite and saturates Lloyd's bound after a critical time. It is also argued that several artifacts, such as the unphysical negative-time interval, can be removed by truly considering the bulk dual of the thermofield double state.

Conformal Primary Basis for Dirac Spinors

We study solutions to the Dirac equation in Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{1,d+1}$ that transform as $d$-dimensional conformal primary spinors under the Lorentz group $SO(1,d+1)$. Such solutions are parameterized by a point in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and a conformal dimension $Δ$. The set of wavefunctions that belong to the principal continuous series, $Δ=\frac{d}2 + iν$, with $ν\geq 0$ and $ν\in \mathbb{R}$ in the massive and massless cases, respectively, form a complete basis of delta-function normalizable solutions of the Dirac equation. In the massless case, the conformal primary wavefunctions are related to the wavefunctions in momentum space by a Mellin transform.

Combinatorics of Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory

The theory of Wilson loops for gauge theories with unitary gauge groups is formulated in the language of symmetric functions. The main objects in this theory are two generating functions, which are related to each other by the involution that exchanges an irreducible representation with its conjugate. Both of them contain all information about the Wilson loops in arbitrary representations as well as the correlators of multiply-wound Wilson loops. This general framework is combined with the results of the Gaussian matrix model, which calculates the expectation values of $1/2$-BPS circular Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory. General, explicit, formulas for the connected correlators of multiply-wound Wilson loops in terms of the traces of symmetrized matrix products are obtained, as well as their inverses. It is shown that the generating functions for Wilson loops in mutually conjugate representations are related by a duality relation whenever they can be calculated by a Hermitian matrix model.

Note on generating functions and connected correlators of 1/2-BPS Wilson loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory

The generating functions for the Wilson loops in the symmetric and antisymmetric representations of the gauge group $U(N)$ are expressed in terms of the connected correlators of multiply-wound Wilson loops, using ingredients from the representation theory of the symmetric group. This provides a proof of a recent observation by Okuyama. As a by-product, we present a new calculation of the connected 2-point correlator of multiply-wound Wilson loops at leading order in $1/N$.

Generalized Supergravity Equations and Generalized Fradkin-Tseytlin Counterterm

The generalized Fradkin-Tseytlin counterterm for the (type I) Green-Schwarz superstring is determined for background fields satisfying the generalized supergravity equations (GSE). For this purpose, we revisit the derivation of the GSE based upon the requirement of kappa-symmetry of the superstring action. Lifting the constraint of vanishing bosonic torsion components, we are able to make contact to several different torsion constraints used in the literature. It is argued that a natural geometric interpretation of the GSE vector field that generalizes the dilaton is as the torsion vector, which can combine with the dilatino spinor into the torsion supervector. To find the counterterm, we use old results for the one-loop effective action of the heterotic sigma model. The counterterm is covariant and involves the worldsheet torsion for vanishing curvature, but cannot be constructed as a local functional in terms of the worldsheet metric. It is shown that the Weyl anomaly cancels without imposing any further constraints on the background fields. In the case of ordinary supergravity, it reduces to the Fradkin-Tseytlin counterterm modulo an additional constraint.

Antisymmetric Wilson loops in N = 4 SYM: from exact results to non-planar corrections

We consider the vacuum expectation values of 1/2-BPS circular Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in the totally antisymmetric representation of the gauge group U(N) or SU(N). Localization and matrix model techniques provide exact, but rather formal, expressions for these expectation values. In this paper we show how to extract the leading and sub-leading behavior in a 1/N expansion with fixed 't Hooft coupling starting from these exact results. This is done by exploiting the relation between the generating function of antisymmetric Wilson loops and a finite-dimensional quantum system known as the truncated harmonic oscillator. Sum and integral representations for the 1/N terms are provided.

Ladder operators for Klein-Gordon equation with scalar curvature term

Recently, Cardoso, Houri and Kimura constructed generalized ladder operators for massive Klein-Gordon scalar fields in space-times with conformal symmetry. Their construction requires a closed conformal Killing vector, which is also an eigenvector of the Ricci tensor. Here, a similar procedure is used to construct generalized ladder operators for the Klein-Gordon equation with a scalar curvature term. It is proven that a ladder operator requires the existence of a conformal Killing vector, which must satisfy an additional property. This property is necessary and sufficient for the construction of a ladder operator. For maximally symmetric space-times, the results are equivalent to those of Cardoso, Houri and Kimura.

Effective Fluid Description of the Dark Universe

We propose an effective anisotropic fluid description for a generic infrared-modified theory of gravity. In our framework, the additional component of the acceleration, commonly attributed to dark matter, is explained as a radial pressure generated by the reaction of the dark energy fluid to the presence of baryonic matter. Using quite general assumptions, and a microscopic description of the fluid in terms of a Bose-Einstein condensate of gravitons, we find the static, spherically symmetric solution for the metric in terms of the Misner-Sharp mass function and the fluid pressure. At galactic scales, we correctly reproduce the leading MOND-like $\log(r)$ and subleading $(1/r)\,\log(r)$ terms in the weak-field expansion of the potential. Our description also predicts a tiny (of order $10^{-6}$ for a typical spiral galaxy) Machian modification of the Newtonian potential at galactic scales, which is controlled by the cosmological acceleration.
