Counting Photons in Static Electric and Magnetic Fields

We describe the electromagnetic field by the massless limit of a massive vector field in the presence of a Coulomb gauge fixing term. The gauge fixing term ensures that, in the massless limit, the longitudinal mode is removed from the spectrum and only the two transverse modes survive. The system, coupled to a classical conserved current, is quantized in the canonical formalism. The classical field configurations due to time-independent electric charges and currents are represented by coherent states of longitudinal and transverse photons, respectively. The occupation number in these states is finite. In particular, the number of longitudinal photons bound by an electric charge q is given by N=q^2/(16π\hbar).

One-loop Effective Action of the Holographic Antisymmetric Wilson Loop

We systematically study the spectrum of excitations and the one-loop determinant of holographic Wilson loop operators in antisymmetric representations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Holographically, these operators are described by D5-branes carrying electric flux and wrapping an $S^4 \subset S^5$ in the $AdS_5\times S^5$ bulk background. We derive the dynamics of both bosonic and fermionic excitations for such D5-branes. A particularly important configuration in this class is the D5-brane with $AdS_2\times S^4$ worldvolume and $k$ units of electric flux, which is dual to the circular Wilson loop in the totally antisymmetric representation of rank $k$. For this Wilson loop, we obtain the spectrum, show explicitly that it is supersymmetric and calculate the one-loop effective action using heat kernel techniques.

The Polyakov Loop of Anti-symmetric Representations as a Quantum Impurity Model

The Polyakov loop of an operator in the anti-symmetric representation in N=4 SYM theory on spacial R^3 is calculated, to leading order in 1/N and at large 't Hooft coupling, by solving the saddle point equations of the corresponding quantum impurity model. Agreement is found with previous results from the supergravity dual, which is given by a D5-brane in an asymptotically AdS_5 x S^5 black brane background. It is shown that the azimuth angle, at which the dual D5-brane wraps the S^5, is related to the spectral asymmetry angle in the spectral density associated with the Green's function of the impurity fermions. Much of the calculation also applies to the Polyakov loop on spacial S^3 or H^3.

Running Scaling Dimensions in Holographic Renormalization Group Flows

Holographic renormalization group flows can be interpreted in terms of effective field theory. Based on such an interpretation, a formula for the running scaling dimensions of gauge-invariant operators along such flows is proposed. The formula is checked for some simple examples from the AdS/CFT correspondence, but can be applied also in non-AdS/non-CFT cases.

Towards Holographic Renormalization of Fake Supergravity

A step is made towards generalizing the method of holographic renormalization to backgrounds which are not asymptotically AdS, corresponding to a dual gauge theory which has logarithmically running couplings even in the ultraviolet. A prime example is the background of Klebanov-Strassler (KS). In particular, a recipe is given how to calculate renormalized two-point functions for the operators dual to the bulk scalars. The recipe makes use of gauge-invariant variables for the fluctuations around the background and works for any bulk theory of the fake supergravity type. It elegantly incorporates the renormalization scheme dependence of local terms in the correlators. Before applying the method to the KS theory, it is verified that known results in asymptotically AdS backgrounds are reproduced. Finally, some comments on the calculation of renormalized vacuum expectation values are made.

Spectral Functions in Holographic Renormalization Group Flows

The spectrum of two-point functions in a holographic renormalization group flow from an ultraviolet (UV) to an infrared (IR) conformal fixed point is necessarily continuous. For a toy model, the spectral function does not only show the expected UV and IR behaviours, but other interesting features such as sharp peaks and oscillations in the UV. The spectral functions for the SU(3)xU(1) flow in AdS_4/CFT_3 and the SU(2)xU(1) flow in AdS_5/CFT_4 are calculated numerically. They exhibit a simple cross-over behaviour and reproduce the conformal dimensions of the dual operators in the UV and IR conformal phases.

Very Special Relativity in Curved Space-Times

The generalization of Cohen and Glashow's Very Special Relativity to curved space-times is considered. Gauging the SIM(2) symmetry does not, in general, provide the coupling to the gravitational background. However, locally SIM(2) invariant Lagrangians can always be constructed. For space-times with SIM(2) holonomy, they describe chiral fermions propagating freely as massive particles.

Stretched Horizon and Entropy of Superstars

Amongst the class of supergravity solutions found by Lin, Lunin and Maldacena, we consider pure and mixed state configurations generated by phase space densities in the dual fermionic picture. A one-to-one map is constructed between the phase space densities and piecewise monotonic curves, which generalize the Young diagrams corresponding to pure states. Within the fermionic phase space picture, a microscopic formula for the entropy of mixed states is proposed. Considering thermal ensembles, agreement is found between the thermodynamic and the proposed microscopic entropies. Furthermore, we study fluctuations in thermodynamic ensembles for the superstar and compare the entropy of these ensembles with the area of stretched horizons predicted by the mean fluctuation size.

Progress on Holographic Three-Point Functions

The recently developed gauge-invariant formalism for the treatment of fluctuations in holographic renormalization group (RG) flows overcomes most of the previously encountered technical difficulties. I summarize the formalism and present its application to the GPPZ flow, where scattering amplitudes between glueball states have been calculated and a set of selection rules been found.

Holographic Renormalization and Ward Identities with the Hamilton-Jacobi Method

A systematic procedure for performing holographic renormalization, which makes use of the Hamilton-Jacobi method, is proposed and applied to a bulk theory of gravity interacting with a scalar field and a U(1) gauge field in the Stueckelberg formalism. We describe how the power divergences are obtained as solutions of a set of "descent equations" stemming from the radial Hamiltonian constraint of the theory. In addition, we isolate the logarithmic divergences, which are closely related to anomalies. The method allows to determine also the exact one-point functions of the dual field theory. Using the other Hamiltonian constraints of the bulk theory, we derive the Ward identities for diffeomorphisms and gauge invariance. In particular, we demonstrate the breaking of U(1)_R current conservation, recovering the holographic chiral anomaly recently discussed in hep-th/0112119 and hep-th/0202056.

An improved correspondence formula for AdS/CFT with multi-trace operators

An improved correspondence formula is proposed for the calculation of correlation functions of a conformal field theory perturbed by multi-trace operators from the analysis of the dynamics of the dual field theory in Anti-de Sitter space. The formula reduces to the usual AdS/CFT correspondence formula in the case of single-trace perturbations.

Correlation Functions in Holographic Renormalization Group Flows

We consider the holographic duality for a generic bulk theory of scalars coupled to gravity. By studying the fluctuations around Poincare invariant backgrounds with non-vanishing scalars, with the scalar and metric boundary conditions considered as being independent, we obtain all one- and two-point functions in the dual renormalization group flows of the boundary field theory. Operator and vev flows are explicitly distinguished by means of the physical condensates. The method is applied to the GPPZ and Coulomb branch flows, and field theoretical expectations are confirmed.

Holographic Renormalisation and Anomalies

The Weyl anomaly in the Holographic Renormalisation Group as implemented using Hamilton-Jacobi language is studied in detail. We investigate the breakdown of the descent equations in order to isolate the Weyl anomaly of the dual field theory close to the (UV) fixed point. We use the freedom of adding finite terms to the renormalised effective action in order to bring the anomalies in the expected form. We comment on different ways of describing the bare and renormalised schemes, and on possible interpretations of the descent equations as describing the renormalisation group flow non-perturbatively. We find that under suitable assumptions these relations may lead to a class of c-functions.
