Electroweak form factors of heavy-light mesons -- a relativistic point-form approach

We present a general relativistic framework for the calculation of the electroweak structure of heavy-light mesons within constituent-quark models. To this aim the physical processes in which the structure is measured, i.e. electron-meson scattering and semileptonic weak decays, are treated in a Poincaré invariant way by making use of the point-form of relativistic quantum mechanics. The electromagnetic and weak meson currents are extracted from the 1-$γ$ and 1-$W$-exchange amplitudes that result from a Bakamjian-Thomas type mass operator for the respective systems. The covariant decomposition of these currents provides the electromagnetic and weak (transition) form factors. Problems with cluster separability, which are inherent in the Bakamjian-Thomas construction, are discussed and it is shown how to keep them under control. It is proved that the heavy-quark limit of the electroweak form factors leads to one universal function, the Isgur-Wise function, confirming that the requirements of heavy-quark symmetry are satisfied. A simple analytical expression is given for the Isgur-Wise function and its agreement with a corresponding front-form calculation is verified numerically. Electromagnetic form factors for $B^-$ and $D^+$ and weak $B\rightarrow D^{(\ast)}$-decay form factors are calculated with a simple harmonic-oscilllator wave function and heavy-quark symmetry breaking due to finite masses of the heavy quarks is discussed.

The Schwinger Model in Point Form

We attempt to solve the Schwinger model, i.e. massless QED in 1+1 dimensions, by quantizing it on a space-time hyperboloid x_μx^μ=τ^2. The Fock-space representation of the 2-momentum operator is derived and its algebraic structure is analyzed. We briefly outline a solution strategy.

Form Factors of Few-Body Systems: Point Form Versus Front Form

We present a relativistic point-form approach for the calculation of electroweak form factors of few-body bound states that leads to results which resemble those obtained within the covariant light-front formalism of Carbonell et al. Our starting points are the physical processes in which such form factors are measured, i.e. electron scattering off the bound state, or the semileptonic weak decay of the bound state. These processes are treated by means of a coupled-channel framework for a Bakamjian-Thomas type mass operator. A current with the correct covariance properties is then derived from the pertinent leading-order electroweak scattering or decay amplitude. As it turns out, the electromagnetic current is affected by unphysical contributions which can be traced back to wrong cluster properties inherent in the Bakamjian-Thomas construction. These spurious contributions, however, can be separated uniquely, as in the covariant light-front approach. In this way we end up with form factors which agree with those obtained from the covariant light-front approach. As an example we will present results for electroweak form factors of heavy-light systems and discuss the heavy-quark limit which leads to the famous Isgur-Wise function.

Form factors of heavy-light systems in point-form relativistic quantum mechanics: the Isgur-Wise function

We investigate electromagnetic and weak form factors of heavy-light mesons in the context of point-form relativistic quantum mechanics. To this aim we treat the physical processes from which such electroweak form factors are extracted by means of a coupled channel approach which accounts for the dynamics of the intermediate gauge bosons. It is shown that heavy-quark symmetry is respected by this formulation. A simple analytical expression is obtained for the Isgur-Wise function in the heavy-quark limit. Breaking of heavy-quark symmetry due to realistic values of the heavy-quark mass are studied numerically.

A relativistic coupled-channel formalism for electromagnetic form factors of 2-body bound states

We discuss a Poincaré invariant coupled-channel formalism which is based on the point-form of relativistic quantum mechanics. Electromagnetic scattering of an electron by a 2-body bound state is treated as a 2-channel problem for a Bakamjian-Thomas-type mass operator. In this way retardation effects in the photon-exchange interaction are fully taken into account. The electromagnetic current of the 2-body bound state is then extracted from the one-photon-exchange optical potential. As an application we calculate electromagnetic pion and deuteron form factors. Wrong cluster properties, inherent in the Bakamjian-Thomas framework, are seen to cause spurious (unphysical) contributions in the current. These are separated and eliminated in an unambiguous way such that one is left with a current that has all the desired properties.

Resonances and Decay Widths within a Relativistic Coupled Channel Approach

We present a microscopic model for hadron resonances which contains, in addition to constituent (anti)quarks, mesonic degrees of freedom. It is assumed that the (anti)quarks are confined by an instantaneous potential and that the mesons can couple directly to the (anti)quarks. This system is treated within a relativistic coupled-channel formalism in order to take the dynamics of the mesonic degrees of freedom fully into account. It is demonstrated that the mass eigenvalue problem for such a system can be reformulated as a purely hadronic eigenvalue problem in which bare hadrons, i.e. eigenstates of the pure confinement problem, are coupled via meson loops. The substructure of the bare hadrons is then hidden in (bare) hadron-meson vertex form factors. It is shown for a simple toy model that such a kind of approach may lead to reasonable (non-perturbative) decay widths for hadron resonances.

Point-Form Hamiltonian Dynamics and Applications

This short review summarizes recent developments and results in connection with point-form dynamics of relativistic quantum systems. We discuss a Poincare invariant multichannel formalism which describes particle production and annihilation via vertex interactions that are derived from field theoretical interaction densities. We sketch how this rather general formalism can be used to derive electromagnetic form factors of confined quark-antiquark systems. As a further application it is explained how the chiral constituent quark model leads to hadronic states that can be considered as bare hadrons dressed by meson loops. Within this approach hadron resonances acquire a finite (non-perturbative) decay width. We will also discuss the point-form dynamics of quantum fields. After recalling basic facts of the free-field case we will address some quantum field theoretical problems for which canonical quantization on a space-time hyperboloid could be advantageous.

Electromagnetic meson form factor from a relativistic coupled-channel approach

Point-form relativistic quantum mechanics is used to derive an expression for the electromagnetic form factor of a pseudoscalar meson for space-like momentum transfers. The elastic scattering of an electron by a confined quark-antiquark pair is treated as a relativistic two-channel problem for the $q\bar{q}e$ and $q\bar{q}eγ$ states. With the approximation that the total velocity of the $q\bar{q}e$ system is conserved at (electromagnetic) interaction vertices this simplifies to an eigenvalue problem for a Bakamjian-Thomas type mass operator. After elimination of the $q\bar{q}eγ$ channel the electromagnetic meson current and form factor can be directly read off from the one-photon-exchange optical potential. By choosing the invariant mass of the electron-meson system large enough, cluster separability violations become negligible. An equivalence with the usual front-form expression, resulting from a spectator current in the $q^+=0$ reference frame, is established. The generalization of this multichannel approach to electroweak form factors for an arbitrary bound few-body system is quite obvious. By an appropriate extension of the Hilbert space this approach is also able to accommodate exchange-current effects.

Exclusive Decuplet-Baryon Pair Production in Two-Photon Collisions

This work extends our previous studies of two-photon annihilation into baryon-antibaryon pairs from spin-1/2 octet to spin-3/2 decuplet baryons. Our approach is based on perturbative QCD and treats baryons as quark-diquark systems. Using the same model parameters as in our previous work, supplemented by QCD sum-rule results for decuplet baryon wave functions, we are able to give absolute predictions for decuplet baryon cross sections without introducing new parameters. We find that the $Δ^{++}$ cross section is of the same order of magnitude as the proton cross section, well within experimental bounds.

Hard Exclusive Baryon-Antibaryon Production in Two-Photon Collisions

We study baryon pair production in two-photon collisions, gamma gamma -> B Bbar, within perturbative quantum chromodynamics, treating baryons as quark-diquark systems. We extend previous work within the same approach by treating constituent-mass effects systematically by means of an expansion in the small parameter (mass/photon energy). Our approach enables us to give a consistent description of the cross sections for all octet baryon channels. Adopting the model parameters from foregoing work, we are able to reproduce the most recent large-momentum-transfer data from LEP for the p pbar, Lambda Lambdabar, and Sigma^0 Sigma^0bar channels in a quite satisfactory way. We also briefly address the crossed process for the proton channel, gamma p -> gamma p.
