Quantum Fisher Information in semiclassical magnon systems

Quantum Fisher Information (QFI) is a powerful spectroscopic tool to witness many-body quantum entanglement in solid state materials, but it is not always obvious how to relate it to other characteristics of condensed matter systems. In this study we elaborate on the meaning and interpretation of QFI in condensed matter by examining simple theoretical spin systems. We use finite sized spin systems to illustrate that QFI quantifies the momentum- dependent degree of quantum entanglement (that is the entanglement depth at a given wave vector) within a wave function. We subsequently use semiclassical frustrated spin models to show that, in the context of linear spin wave theory (LSWT), QFI quantifies the momentum-dependent degree of magnon squeezing in the ground state. In antiferromagnets with a zero-energy Goldstone mode, LSWT breaks down and QFI (and entanglement depth) diverges at the magnetic ordering wave vector. We also show examples of emergent quantum phases in frustrated spin systems that do not appear in classical phase diagrams. When these emergent phases are approached, QFI diverges across multiple wave vectors in momentum space. Taken together, QFI is not only helpful as a lower bound for entanglement depth, but serves as a momentum-resolved probe of entanglement that offers a novel perspective on quantum critical phenomena.

Magnetic order, magnons, and crystal fields in van der Waals CeSiI

We report neutron, X-ray absorption, and resonant X-ray spectroscopy of magnetic excitations in the new heavy-fermion van-der-Waals superconductor CeSiI. We determined effective Hamiltonians and ground states of crystal electric fields and magnons. Isotropic Heisenberg interactions on a quasi two dimensional lattice, including ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange as the dominant interaction, provide an excellent account to the low-energy measured dynamics and stabilize a co-rotating spin cycloid. Our study provides the basis to model CeSiI from first principles, thereby laying the ground for microscopic understanding of heavy-fermion physics, their unconventional superconductivity, and quantum criticality.

Tutorial: Extracting entanglement signatures from neutron spectroscopy

This tutorial is a pedagogical introduction to recent methods of computing quantum spin entanglement witnesses from spectroscopy, with a special focus on neutron scattering on quantum spin systems. We offer a brief introduction to the concepts and equations, define a data analysis protocol, and discuss the interpretation of three entanglement witnesses: one-tangle, two-tangle, and Quantum Fisher Information. We also discuss practical experimental considerations, and give three examples of extracting entanglement witnesses from experimental data: Copper Nitrate, KCuF3, and NiPS3.

Absence of bulk charge density wave order in the normal state of UTe$_2$

A spatially modulated superconducting state, known as pair density wave (PDW), is a tantalizing state of matter with unique properties. Recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies revealed that spin-triplet superconductor UTe$_2$ hosts an unprecedented spin-triplet, multi-component PDW whose three wavevectors are indistinguishable from a preceding charge-density wave (CDW) order that survives to temperatures well above the superconducting critical temperature, $T_{c}$. Whether the PDW is the mother or a subordinate order remains unsettled. Here, based on a systematic search for bulk charge order above $T_{c}$ using resonant elastic X-ray scattering (REXS), we show that the structure factor of charge order previously identified by STM is absent in the bulk within the sensitivity of REXS. Our results invite two scenarios: either the density-wave orders condense simultaneously at $T_{c}$ in the bulk, in which case PDW order is likely the mother phase, or the charge modulations are restricted to the surface.

Absence of a bulk charge density wave signature in x-ray measurements of UTe$_2$

The long-sought pair density wave (PDW) is an exotic phase of matter in which charge density wave (CDW) order is intertwined with the amplitude or phase of coexisting, superconducting order \cite{Berg2009,Berg2009b}. Originally predicted to exist in copper-oxides, circumstantial evidence for PDW order now exists in a variety of materials. Recently, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies have reported evidence for a three-component charge density wave (CDW) at the surface of the heavy-fermion superconductor, UTe$_2$, persisting below its superconducting transition temperature. Here, we use hard x-ray diffraction measurements on crystals of UTe$_2$ at $T = 1.9$ K and $12$ K to search for a bulk signature of this CDW. Using STM measurements as a constraint, we calculate the expected locations of CDW superlattice peaks, and sweep a large volume of reciprocal space in search of a signature. We failed to find any evidence for a CDW near any of the expected superlattice positions in many Brillouin zones. We estimate an upper bound on the CDW lattice distortion of $u_{max} \lesssim 4 \times 10^{-3} \mathrm{\AA}$. Our results suggest that the CDW observed in STM is either purely electronic, somehow lacking a signature in the structural lattice, or is restricted to the material surface.

Resonant elastic X-ray scattering of antiferromagnetic superstructures in EuPtSi$_{3}$

We report resonant elastic X-ray scattering (REXS) of long-range magnetic order in EuPtSi$_{\text{3}}$, combining different scattering geometries with full linear polarization analysis to unambiguously identify magnetic scattering contributions. At low temperatures, EuPtSi$_{\text{3}}$ stabilizes type A antiferromagnetism featuring various long-wavelength modulations. For magnetic fields applied in the hard magnetic basal plane, well-defined regimes of cycloidal, conical, and fan-like superstructures may be distinguished that encompass a pocket of commensurate type A order without superstructure. For magnetic field applied along the easy axis, the phase diagram comprises the cycloidal and conical superstructures only. Highlighting the power of polarized REXS, our results reveal a combination of magnetic phases that suggest a highly unusual competition between antiferromagnetic exchange interactions with Dzyaloshinsky--Moriya spin--orbit coupling of similar strength.

Non-local order in Mott insulators, Duality and Wilson Loops

It is shown that the Mott insulating and superfluid phases of bosons in an optical lattice may be distinguished by a non-local 'parity order parameter' which is directly accessible via single site resolution imaging. In one dimension, the lattice Bose model is dual to a classical interface roughening problem. We use known exact results from the latter to prove that the parity order parameter exhibits long range order in the Mott insulating phase, consistent with recent experiments by Endres et al. [Science 334, 200 (2011)]. In two spatial dimensions, the parity order parameter can be expressed in terms of an equal time Wilson loop of a non-trivial U(1) gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions which exhibits a transition between a Coulomb and a confining phase. The negative logarithm of the parity order parameter obeys a perimeter law in the Mott insulator and is enhanced by a logarithmic factor in the superfluid.
