Small drift limit theorems for random walks

We show analogs of the classical arcsine theorem for the occupation time of a random walk in $(-\infty,0)$ in the case of a small positive drift. To study the asymptotic behavior of the total time spent in $(-\infty,0)$ we consider parametrized classes of random walks, where the convergence of the parameter to zero implies the convergence of the drift to zero. We begin with shift families, generated by a centered random walk by adding to each step a shift constant $a>0$ and then letting $a$ tend to zero. Then we study families of associated distributions. In all cases we arrive at the same limiting distribution, which is the distribution of the time spent below zero of a standard Brownian motion with drift 1. For shift families this is explained by a functional limit theorem. Using fluctuation-theoretic formulas we derive the generating function of the occupation time in closed form, which provides an alternative approach. In the course also give a new form of the first arcsine law for the Brownian motion with drift.

Maximal percentages in Polya's urn

We show that the supremum of the successive percentages of red balls in Pólya's urn model is almost surely rational, give the set of values that are taken with positive probability and derive several exact distributional results for the all-time maximal percentage.

On the small-time behavior of subordinators

We prove several results on the behavior near t=0 of $Y_t^{-t}$ for certain $(0,\infty)$-valued stochastic processes $(Y_t)_{t>0}$. In particular, we show for Lévy subordinators that the Pareto law on $[1,\infty)$ is the only possible weak limit and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence. More generally, we also consider the weak convergence of $tL(Y_t)$ as $t\to0$ for a decreasing function $L$ that is slowly varying at zero. Various examples demonstrating the applicability of the results are presented.

The rate of convergence to stationarity for M/G/1 models with admission controls via coupling

We study the workload processes of two restricted M/G/1 queueing systems: in Model 1 any service requirement that would exceed a certain capacity threshold is truncated; in Model 2 new arrivals do not enter the system if they have to wait more than a fixed threshold time in line. For Model 1 we obtain several results concerning the rate of convergence to equilibrium. In particular we derive uniform bounds for geometric ergodicity with respect to certain subclasses. However, we prove that for the class of all Model 1 workload processes there is no uniform bound. For Model 2 we prove that geometric ergodicity follows from the finiteness of the moment-generating function of the service time distribution and derive bounds for the convergence rates in special cases. The proofs use the coupling method.
