The span-squares adjunction

We show a universal property of the span $\infty$-category that yields a description of functors defined on this category. For this, we view the span construction as a functor from double $\infty$-categories to $\infty$-categories, and show that this functor admits a right adjoint defined by the double $\infty$-categories of squares. Using this adjunction, we obtain new proofs of the equivalences between different models of algebraic $K$-theory, given by the $Q$-, the $S$-, the cobordism model, and the squares construction.

Hermitian K-theory for stable $\infty$-categories III: Grothendieck-Witt groups of rings

We establish a fibre sequence relating the classical Grothendieck-Witt theory of a ring $R$ to the homotopy $\mathrm{C}_2$-orbits of its K-theory and Ranicki's original (non-periodic) symmetric L-theory. We use this fibre sequence to remove the assumption that 2 is a unit in $R$ from various results about Grothendieck-Witt groups. For instance, we solve the homotopy limit problem for Dedekind rings whose fraction field is a number field, calculate the various flavours of Grothendieck-Witt groups of $\mathbb{Z}$, show that the Grothendieck-Witt groups of rings of integers in number fields are finitely generated, and that the comparison map from quadratic to symmetric Grothendieck-Witt theory of Noetherian rings of global dimension $d$ is an equivalence in degrees $\geq d+3$. As an important tool, we establish the hermitian analogue of Quillen's localisation-dévissage sequence for Dedekind rings and use it to solve a conjecture of Berrick-Karoubi.

Stable moduli spaces of hermitian forms

We prove that Grothendieck-Witt spaces of Poincaré categories are, in many cases, group completions of certain moduli spaces of hermitian forms. This, in particular, identifies Karoubi's classical hermitian and quadratic K-groups with the genuine Grothendieck-Witt groups from our joint work with Calmès, Dotto, Harpaz, Land, Moi, Nardin and Nikolaus, and thereby completes our solution of several conjectures in hermitian K-theory. The method of proof is abstracted from work of Galatius and Randal-Williams on cobordism categories of manifolds using the identification of the Grothendieck-Witt space of a Poincaré category as the homotopy type of the associated cobordism category.

Hermitian K-theory for stable $\infty$-categories II: Cobordism categories and additivity

We define Grothendieck-Witt spectra in the setting of Poincaré $\infty$-categories and show that they fit into an extension with a K- and an L-theoretic part. As consequences we deduce localisation sequences for Verdier quotients, and generalisations of Karoubi's fundamental and periodicity theorems for rings in which 2 need not be invertible. Our set-up allows for the uniform treatment of such algebraic examples alongside homotopy-theoretic generalisations: For example, the periodicity theorem holds for complex oriented $\mathrm{E}_1$-rings, and we show that the Grothendieck-Witt theory of parametrised spectra recovers Weiss and Williams' LA-theory. Our Grothendieck-Witt spectra are defined via a version of the hermitian Q-construction, and a novel feature of our approach is to interpret the latter as a cobordism category. This perspective also allows us to give a hermitian version -- along with a concise proof -- of the theorem of Blumberg, Gepner and Tabuada, and provides a cobordism theoretic description of the aforementioned LA-spectra.

The localisation theorem for the $\mathrm{K}$-theory of stable $\infty$-categories

We provide a fairly self-contained account of the localisation and cofinality theorems for the algebraic $\mathrm{K}$-theory of stable $\infty$-categories. It is based on a general formula for the evaluation of an additive functor on a Verdier quotient closely following work of Waldhausen. We also include a new proof of the additivity theorem of $\mathrm{K}$-theory, strongly inspired by Ranicki's algebraic Thom construction, a short proof of the universality theorem of Blumberg, Gepner and Tabuada, and demonstrate that the cofinality theorem can be derived from the universal property alone.

Hermitian K-theory for stable $\infty$-categories I: Foundations

This paper is the first in a series in which we offer a new framework for hermitian K-theory in the realm of stable $\infty$-categories. Our perspective yields solutions to a variety of classical problems involving Grothendieck-Witt groups of rings and clarifies the behaviour of these invariants when 2 is not invertible. In this article we lay the foundations of our approach by considering Lurie's notion of a Poincaré $\infty$-category, which permits an abstract counterpart of unimodular forms called Poincaré objects. We analyse the special cases of hyperbolic and metabolic Poincaré objects, and establish a version of Ranicki's algebraic Thom construction. For derived $\infty$-categories of rings, we classify all Poincaré structures and study in detail the process of deriving them from classical input, thereby locating the usual setting of forms over rings within our framework. We also develop the example of visible Poincaré structures on $\infty$-categories of parametrised spectra, recovering the visible signature of a Poincaré duality space. We conduct a thorough investigation of the global structural properties of Poincaré $\infty$-categories, showing in particular that they form a bicomplete, closed symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category. We also study the process of tensoring and cotensoring a Poincaré $\infty$-category over a finite simplicial complex, a construction featuring prominently in the definition of the L- and Grothendieck-Witt spectra that we consider in the next instalment. Finally, we define already here the 0-th Grothendieck-Witt group of a Poincaré $\infty$-category using generators and relations. We extract its basic properties, relating it in particular to the 0-th L- and algebraic K-groups, a relation upgraded in the second instalment to a fibre sequence of spectra which plays a key role in our applications.

The derivative map for diffeomorphism of disks: An example

We prove that the derivative map $d \colon \mathrm{Diff}_\partial(D^k) \to Ω^kSO_k$, defined by taking the derivative of a diffeomorphism, can induce a nontrivial map on homotopy groups. Specifically, for $k = 11$ we prove that the following homomorphism is non-zero: $$ d_* \colon π_5\mathrm{Diff}_\partial(D^{11}) \to π_{5}Ω^{11}SO_{11} \cong π_{16}SO_{11} $$ As a consequence we give a counter-example to a conjecture of Burghelea and Lashof and so give an example of a non-trivial vector bundle $E$ over a sphere which is trivial as a topological $\mathbb{R}^k$-bundle (the rank of $E$ is $k=11$ and the base sphere is $S^{17}$.) The proof relies on a recent result of Burklund and Senger which determines those homotopy 17-spheres bounding $8$-connected manifolds, the plumbing approach to the Gromoll filtration due to Antonelli, Burghelea and Kahn, and an explicit construction of low-codimension embeddings of certain homotopy spheres.

An Additivity theorem for cobordism categories

Using methods inspired from algebraic $K$-theory, we give a new proof of the Genauer fibration sequence, relating the cobordism categories of closed manifolds with cobordism categories of manifolds with boundaries, and of the Bökstedt-Madsen delooping of the cobordism category. Unlike the existing proofs, this approach generalizes to other cobordism-like categories of interest. Indeed we argue that the Genauer fibration sequence is an analogue, in the setting of cobordism categories, of Waldhausen's Additivity theorem in algebraic $K$-theory.

Topological manifold bundles and the $A$-theory assembly map

We give a new proof of an index theorem for fiber bundles of compact topological manifolds due to Dwyer, Weiss, and Williams, which asserts that the parametrized $A$-theory characteristic of such a fiber bundle factors canonically through the assembly map of $A$-theory. Furthermore our main result shows a refinement of this statement by providing such a factorization for an extended $A$-theory characteristic, defined on the parametrized topological cobordism category. The proof uses a convenient framework for bivariant theories and recent results of Gomez-Lopez and Kupers on the homotopy type of the topological cobordism category. We conjecture that this lift of the extended $A$-theory characteristic becomes highly connected as the manifold dimension increases.

A cobordism model for Waldhausen $K$-theory

We study a categorical construction called the cobordism category, which associates to each Waldhausen category a simplicial category of cospans. We prove that this construction is homotopy equivalent to Waldhausen's $S_{\bullet}$-construction and therefore it defines a model for Waldhausen $K$-theory. As an example, we discuss this model for $A$-theory and show that the cobordism category of homotopy finite spaces has the homotopy type of Waldhausen's $A(*)$. We also review the canonical map from the cobordism category of manifolds to $A$-theory from this viewpoint.

Harmonic spinors and metrics of positive curvature via the Gromoll filtration and Toda brackets

We construct non-trivial elements of order 2 in the homotopy groups $π_{8j+1+*} Diff(D^6,\partial)$, for * congruent 1 or 2 modulo 8, which are detected by the "assembling homomorphism" (giving rise to the Gromoll filtration), followed by the alpha-invariant in $KO_*=Z/2$. These elements are constructed by means of Morlet's homotopy equivalence between $Diff(D^6,\partial)$ and $Ω^7(PL_6/O_6)$, and Toda brackets in $PL_6/O_6$. We also construct non-trivial elements of order 2 in $π_* PL_m$ for every m greater or equal to 6 and * congruent to 1 or 2 modulo 8, which are detected by the alpha-invariant. As consequences, we (a) obtain non-trivial elements of order 2 in $π_* Diff(D^m,\partial)$ for m greater or equal to 6, and * + m congruent 0 or 1 modulo 8; (b) these elements remain non-trivial in $π_* Diff(M)$ where M is a closed spin manifold of the same dimension m and * > 0; (c) they act non-trivially on the corresponding homotopy group of the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature of such an M; in particular these homotopy groups are all non-trivial. The same applies to all other diffeomorphism invariant metrics of positive curvature, like the space of metrics of positive sectional curvature, or the space of metrics of positive Ricci curvature, provided they are non-empty. Further consequences are: (d) any closed spin manifold of dimension m greater or equal to 6 admits a metric with harmonic spinors; (e) there is no analogue of the odd-primary splitting of $(PL/O)_{(p)}$ for the prime 2; (f) for any $bP_{8j+4}$-sphere (where j > 0) of order which divides 4, the corresponding element in $π_0 Diff(D^{8j+2},\partial)$ lifts to $π_{8j-4} Diff(D^6,\partial)$, i.e., lies correspondingly deep down in the Gromoll filtration.

Approximately fibering a manifold over an aspherical one

The paper is devoted to the problem when a map from some closed connected manifold to an aspherical closed manifold approximately fibers, i.e., is homotopic to Manifold Approximate Fibration. We define obstructions in algebraic K-theory. Their vanishing is necessary and under certain conditions sufficient. Basic ingredients are Quinn's thin h-Cobordism Theorem and End Theorem, and knowledge about the Farrell-Jones Conjectures in algebraic K- and L-theory and the MAF-Rigidity Conjecture by Hughes-Taylor-Williams.

Degeneracies in quasi-categories

In this note we show that a semisimplicial set with the weak Kan condition admits a simplicial structure, provided any object allows an idempotent self-equivalence. Moreover, any two choices of simplicial structures give rise to equivalent quasi-categories. The method is purely combinatorial and extends to semisimplicial objects in other categories; in particular to semi-simplicial spaces satisfying the Segal condition (semi-Segal spaces).

Parametrized cobordism categories and the Dwyer-Weiss-Williams index theorem

We define parametrized cobordism categories and study their formal properties as bivariant theories. Bivariant transformations to a strongly excisive bivariant theory give rise to characteristic classes of smooth bundles with strong additivity properties. In the case of cobordisms between manifolds with boundary, we prove that such a bivariant transformation is uniquely determined by its value at the universal disk bundle. This description of bivariant transformations yields a short proof of the Dwyer-Weiss-Williams family index theorem for the parametrized A-theory Euler characteristic of a smooth bundle.

On the universal property of Waldhausen's K-theory

In this note we show that Waldhausen's K-theory functor from Waldhausen categories to spaces has a universal property: It is the target of the "universal global Euler characteristic", in other words, the "additivization" of the functor sending a Waldhausen category C to obj(C) . We also show that a large class of functors possesses such an additivization.

Splitting the relative assembly map, Nil-terms and involutions

We show that the relative Farrell-Jones assembly map from the family of finite subgroups to the family of virtually cyclic subgroups for algebraic K-theory is split injective in the setting where the coefficients are additive categories with group action. This generalizes a result of Bartels for rings as coefficients. We give an explicit description of the relative term. This enables us to show that it vanishes rationally if we take coefficients in a regular ring. Moreover, it is, considered as a Z[Z/2]-module by the involution coming from taking dual modules, an extended module and in particular all its Tate cohomology groups vanish, provided that the infinite virtually cyclic subgroups of type I of G are orientable. The latter condition is for instance satisfied for torsionfree hyperbolic groups.
