Boolean models

The topic of this survey are geometric functionals of a Boolean model (in Euclidean space) governed by a stationary Poisson process of convex grains. The Boolean model is a fundamental benchmark of stochastic geometry and continuum percolation. Moreover, it is often used to model amorphous connected structures in physics, materials science and biology. Deeper insight into the geometric and probabilistic properties of Boolean models and the dependence on the underlying Poisson process can be gained by considering various geometric functionals of Boolean models. Important examples are the intrinsic volumes and Minkowski tensors. We survey here local and asymptotic density (mean value) formulas as well as second order properties and central limit theorems.

General volumes in the Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory and a related Minkowski Problem I

The general volume of a star body, a notion that includes the usual volume, the $q$th dual volumes, and many previous types of dual mixed volumes, is introduced. A corresponding new general dual Orlicz curvature measure is defined that specializes to the $(p,q)$-dual curvature measures introduced recently by Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang. General variational formulas are established for the general volume of two types of Orlicz linear combinations. One of these is applied to the Minkowski problem for the new general dual Orlicz curvature measure, giving in particular a solution to the Minkowski problem posed by Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang for the $(p,q)$-dual curvature measures when $p>0$ and $q<0$. A dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski inequality for general volumes is obtained, as well as dual Orlicz-Minkowski-type inequalities and uniqueness results for star bodies. Finally, a very general Minkowski-type inequality, involving two Orlicz functions, two convex bodies, and a star body, is proved, that includes as special cases several others in the literature, in particular one due to Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang for the $(p,q)$-mixed volume.

Determination of Boolean models by mean values of mixed volumes

In Weil (2001) formulas were proved for stationary Boolean models $Z$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with convex or polyconvex grains, which express the densities of mixed volumes of $Z$ in terms of related mean values of the underlying Poisson particle process $X$. These formulas were then used to show that in dimensions 2 and 3 the mean values of $Z$ determine the intensity $γ$ of $X$. For $d=4$ a corresponding result was also stated, but the proof given was incomplete, since in the formula for the mean Euler characteristic $\overline V_0 (Z)$ a term $\overline V^{(0)}_{2,2}(X,X)$ was missing. This was pointed out in Goodey and Weil (2002), where it was also explained that a new decomposition result for mixed volumes and mixed translative functionals would be needed to complete the proof. Such a general decomposition result is now available based on flag measures of the convex bodies involved (Hug, Rataj and Weil (2013, 2017)). Here, we show that such flag representations not only lead to a correct derivation of the 4-dimensional result but even yield a corresponding uniqueness theorem in all dimensions. In the proof of the latter, we make use of Alesker's representation theorem for translation invariant valuations. We also discuss which shape information can be obtained in this way and comment on the situation in the non-stationary case.

Flag representations of mixed volumes and mixed functionals of convex bodies

Mixed volumes $V(K_1,\dots, K_d)$ of convex bodies $K_1,\dots ,K_d$ in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ are of central importance in the Brunn-Minkowski theory. Representations for mixed volumes are available in special cases, for example as integrals over the unit sphere with respect to mixed area measures. More generally, in Hug-Rataj-Weil (2013) a formula for $V(K [n], M[d-n])$, $n\in \{1,\dots ,d-1\}$, as a double integral over flag manifolds was established which involved certain flag measures of the convex bodies $K$ and $M$ (and required a general position of the bodies). In the following, we discuss the general case $V(K_1[n_1],\dots , K_k[n_k])$, $n_1+\cdots +n_k=d$, and show a corresponding result involving the flag measures $Ω_{n_1}(K_1;\cdot),\dots, Ω_{n_k}(K_k;\cdot)$. For this purpose, we first establish a curvature representation of mixed volumes over the normal bundles of the bodies involved. We also obtain a corresponding flag representation for the mixed functionals from translative integral geometry and a local version, for mixed (translative) curvature measures.

Grassmann measures of convex bodies

Flag measures are descriptors of convex bodies $K$ in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space generalizing the classical area measures. They have been used to provide general integral formulas for mixed volumes (see Hug, Rataj and Weil (2017)). Here, we consider an image measure $γ_j(K,\cdot)$ of flag measures, defined on the Grassmannian $G(d,j)$ of affine $j$-spaces, $1\le j\le d-1$, and show that it determines centrally symmetric bodies $K$ of dimension $\geq j+1$ uniquely. We then explain that Grassmann measures appear in the representation of smooth, translation invariant, continuous and even valuations due to Alesker (2003). Using this connection, we prove a uniqueness result for projection averages of area measures and we finally discuss a Grassmann version of the natural touching measure of convex bodies.

Integral geometry of translation invariant functionals, II: The case of general convex bodies

In continuation of Part I, we study translative integral formulas for certain translation invariant functionals, which are defined on general convex bodies. Again, we consider local extensions and use these to show that the translative formulas extend to arbitrary continuous and translation invariant valuations. Then, we discuss applications to Poisson particle processes and Boolean models which contain, as a special case, some new results for flag measures.

Valuations and Boolean Models

Valuations, as additive functionals, allow various applications in Stochastic Geometry, yielding mean value formulas for specific random closed sets and processes of convex or polyconvex particles. In particular, valuations are especially adapted to Boolean models, the latter being the union sets of Poisson particle processes. In this chapter, we collect mean value formulas for scalar- and tensor-valued valuations applied to Boolean models under quite general invariance assumptions.

Kinematic formulas for area measures

We obtain a Principal Kinematic Formula and a Crofton Formula for surface area measures of convex bodies, both involving linear operators on the vector space of signed measures on the unit sphere $S^{d-1}$. These formulas are related to a localization of Hadwiger's Integral Geometric Theorem. The operators, mentioned above, will be shown to be compositions of spherical Fourier transforms originating in the work of Koldobsky. As an application of our Crofton Formula, we will find an extension of Koldobsky's orthogonality relation for such transforms from the case of even spherical functions to centered functions.

A flag representation of projection functions

The $k$th projection function $v_k(K,\cdot)$ of a convex body $K\subset {\mathbb R}^d, d\ge 3,$ is a function on the Grassmannian $G(d,k)$ which measures the $k$-dimensional volume of the projection of $K$ onto members of $G(d,k)$. For $k=1$ and $k=d-1$, simple formulas for the projection functions exist. In particular, $v_{d-1}(K,\cdot)$ can be written as a spherical integral with respect to the surface area measure of $K$. Here, we generalize this result and prove two integral representations for $v_k(K,\cdot), k=1,\dots,d-1$, over flag manifolds. Whereas the first representation generalizes a result of Ambartzumian (1987), but uses a flag measure which is not continuous in $K$, the second representation is related to a recent flag formula for mixed volumes by Hug, Rataj and Weil (2013) and depends continuously on $K$.

Intersection and proximity of processes of flats

Weakly stationary random processes of $k$-dimensional affine subspaces (flats) in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are considered. If $2k\geq n$, then intersection processes are investigated, while in the complementary case $2k<n$ a proximity process is introduced. The intensity measures of these processes are described in terms of parameters of the underlying $k$-flat process. By a translation into geometric parameters of associated zonoids and by means of integral transformations, several new uniqueness and stability results for these processes of flats are derived. They rely on a combination of known and novel estimates for area measures of zonoids, which are also developed in the paper. Finally, an asymptotic second-order analysis as well as central and non-central limit theorems for length-power direction functionals of proximity processes derived from stationary Poisson $k$-flat process complement earlier works for intersection processes.

The Dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski Theory

This paper introduces the dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory for star sets. A radial Orlicz addition of two or more star sets is proposed and a corresponding dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski inequality is established. Based on a radial Orlicz linear combination of two star sets, a formula for the dual Orlicz mixed volume is derived and a corresponding dual Orlicz-Minkowski inequality proved. The inequalities proved yield as special cases the precise duals of the conjectured log-Brunn-Minkowski and log-Minkowski inequalities of Böröczky, Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang. A new addition of star sets called radial $M$-addition is also introduced and shown to relate to the radial Orlicz addition.

Extensions of translation invariant valuations on polytopes

We study translation invariant, real-valued valuations on the class of convex polytopes in Euclidean space and discuss which continuity properties are sufficient for an extension of such valuations to all convex bodies. For this purpose, we introduce flag support measures of convex bodies via a local Steiner formula and derive some of the properties of these measures.

Differentiation of sets - The general case

In recent work by Khmaladze and Weil (2008) and by Einmahl and Khmaladze (2011), limit theorems were established for local empirical processes near the boundary of compact convex sets $K$ in $\R$. The limit processes were shown to live on the normal cylinder $Σ$ of $K$, respectively on a class of set-valued derivatives in $Σ$. The latter result was based on the concept of differentiation of sets at the boundary $\partial K$ of $K$, which was developed in Khmaladze (2007). Here, we extend the theory of set-valued derivatives to boundaries $\partial F$ of rather general closed sets $F\subset \R$, making use of a local Steiner formula for closed sets, established in Hug, Last and Weil (2004).

The Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory: A general framework, additions, and inequalities

The Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory, introduced by Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang, is a new extension of the classical Brunn-Minkowski theory. It represents a generalization of the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory, analogous to the way that Orlicz spaces generalize $L_p$ spaces. For appropriate convex functions $φ:[0,\infty)^m\to [0,\infty)$, a new way of combining arbitrary sets in $\R^n$ is introduced. This operation, called Orlicz addition and denoted by $+_φ$, has several desirable properties, but is not associative unless it reduces to $L_p$ addition. A general framework is introduced for the Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory that includes both the new addition and previously introduced concepts, and makes clear for the first time the relation to Orlicz spaces and norms. It is also shown that Orlicz addition is intimately related to a natural and fundamental generalization of Minkowski addition called $M$-addition. The results obtained show, roughly speaking, that the Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory is the most general possible based on an addition that retains all the basic geometrical properties enjoyed by the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory. Inequalities of the Brunn-Minkowski type are obtained, both for $M$-addition and Orlicz addition. The new Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski inequality implies the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski inequality. New Orlicz-Minkowski inequalities are obtained that generalize the $L_p$-Minkowski inequality. One of these has connections with the conjectured log-Brunn-Minkowski inequality of Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang, and in fact these two inequalities together are shown to split the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality.

Operations between sets in geometry

An investigation is launched into the fundamental characteristics of operations on and between sets, with a focus on compact convex sets and star sets (compact sets star-shaped with respect to the origin) in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space $\R^n$. For example, it is proved that if $n\ge 2$, with three trivial exceptions, an operation between origin-symmetric compact convex sets is continuous in the Hausdorff metric, GL(n) covariant, and associative if and only if it is $L_p$ addition for some $1\le p\le\infty$. It is also demonstrated that if $n\ge 2$, an operation * between compact convex sets is continuous in the Hausdorff metric, GL(n) covariant, and has the identity property (i.e., $K*\{o\}=K=\{o\}*K$ for all compact convex sets $K$, where $o$ denotes the origin) if and only if it is Minkowski addition. Some analogous results for operations between star sets are obtained. An operation called $M$-addition is generalized and systematically studied for the first time. Geometric-analytic formulas that characterize continuous and GL(n)-covariant operations between compact convex sets in terms of $M$-addition are established. The term "polynomial volume" is introduced for the property of operations * between compact convex or star sets that the volume of $rK*sL$, $r,s\ge 0$, is a polynomial in the variables $r$ and $s$. It is proved that if $n\ge 2$, with three trivial exceptions, an operation between origin-symmetric compact convex sets is continuous in the Hausdorff metric, GL(n) covariant, associative, and has polynomial volume if and only if it is Minkowski addition.

Statistics for Poisson models of overlapping spheres

The paper considers the stationary Poisson Boolean model with spherical grains and proposes a family of nonparametric estimators for the radius distribution. These estimators are based on observed distances and radii, weighted in an appropriate way. They are ratio-unbiased and asymptotically consistent for growing observation window. It is shown that the asymptotic variance exists and is given by a fairly explicit integral expression. Asymptotic normality is established under a suitable integrability assumption on the weight function. The paper also provides a short discussion of related estimators as well as a simulation study.

A product integral representation of mixed volumes of two convex bodies

The Brunn-Minkowski theory relies heavily on the notion of mixed volumes. Despite its particular importance, even explicit representations for the mixed volumes of two convex bodies in Euclidean space are available only in special cases. Here we investigate a new integral representation of such mixed volumes, in terms of flag measures of the involved convex sets. A brief introduction to (extended) flag measures of convex bodies is also provided.
