Exact power spectra of Brownian motion with solid friction

We study a Langevin equation describing the Brownian motion of an object subjected to a viscous drag, an external constant force, and a solid friction force of the Coulomb type. In a previous work [H. Touchette, E. Van der Straeten, W. Just, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 43, 445002, 2010], we have presented the exact solution of the velocity propagator of this equation based on a spectral decomposition of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. Here, we present an alternative, exact solution based on the Laplace transform of this equation, which has the advantage of being expressed in closed form. From this solution, we also obtain closed-form expressions for the Laplace transform of the velocity autocorrelation function and for the power spectrum, i.e., the Fourier transform of the autocorrelation function. The behavior of the power spectrum as a function of the dry friction force and external forcing shows a clear crossover between stick and slip regimes known to occur in the presence of solid friction.

On the relation between Lyapunov exponents and exponential decay of correlations

Chaotic dynamics with sensitive dependence on initial conditions may result in exponential decay of correlation functions. We show that for one-dimensional interval maps the corresponding quantities, that is, Lyapunov exponents and exponential decay rates are related. For piecewise linear expanding Markov maps observed via piecewise analytic functions we provide explicit bounds of the decay rate in terms of the Lyapunov exponent. In addition, we comment on similar relations for general piecewise smooth expanding maps.

Fair sharing of resources in a supply network with constraints

This paper investigates the effect of network topology on the fair allocation of network resources among a set of agents, an all-important issue for the efficiency of transportation networks all around us. We analyse a generic mechanism that distributes network capacity fairly among existing flow demands. The problem can be solved by semi-analytical methods on a nearest neighbour graph with one source and sink pair, when transport occurs over shortest paths. For this setup, we uncover a broad range of patterns of intersecting shortest paths as a function of the distance between the source and the sink. When the number of intersections is the maximum and the distance between the source and the sink is large, we find that a fair allocation implies a decrease of at least 50% from the maximum throughput. We also find that the histogram of the flow allocations assigned to the agents decays as a power-law with exponent -1. Our semi-analytical framework suggests possible explanations for the well-known reduction of the throughput in fair allocations. It also suggests that the combination of network topology and routing rules can lead to highly uneven (but fair) distributions of resources, a remark of caution to network designers.

Brownian motion with dry friction: Fokker-Planck approach

We solve a Langevin equation, first studied by de Gennes, in which there is a solid-solid or dry friction force acting on a Brownian particle in addition to the viscous friction usually considered in the study of Brownian motion. We obtain both the time-dependent propagator of this equation and the velocity correlation function by solving the associated time-dependent Fokker-Planck equation. Exact results are found for the case where only dry friction acts on the particle. For the case where both dry and viscous friction forces are present, series representations of the propagator and correlation function are obtained in terms of parabolic cylinder functions. Similar series representations are also obtained for the case where an external constant force is added to the Langevin equation.

Coexisting patterns of population oscillations: the degenerate Neimark Sacker bifurcation as a generic mechanism

We investigate a population dynamics model that exhibits a Neimark Sacker bifurcation with a period that is naturally close to 4. Beyond the bifurcation, the period becomes soon locked at 4 due to a strong resonance, and a second attractor of period 2 emerges, which coexists with the first attractor over a considerable parameter range. A linear stability analysis and a numerical investigation of the second attractor reveal that the bifurcations producing the second attractor occur naturally in this type of system.

A three-species model explaining cyclic dominance of pacific salmon

The four-year oscillations of the number of spawning sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) that return to their native stream within the Fraser River basin in Canada are a striking example of population oscillations. The period of the oscillation corresponds to the dominant generation time of these fish. Various - not fully convincing - explanations for these oscillations have been proposed, including stochastic influences, depensatory fishing, or genetic effects. Here, we show that the oscillations can be explained as a stable dynamical attractor of the population dynamics, resulting from a strong resonance near a Neimark Sacker bifurcation. This explains not only the long-term persistence of these oscillations, but also reproduces correctly the empirical sequence of salmon abundance within one period of the oscillations. Furthermore, it explains the observation that these oscillations occur only in sockeye stocks originating from large oligotrophic lakes, and that they are usually not observed in salmon species that have a longer generation time.

Robustness of Trans-European Gas Networks

Here we uncover the load and fault-tolerant backbones of the trans-European gas pipeline network. Combining topological data with information on inter-country flows, we estimate the global load of the network and its tolerance to failures. To do this, we apply two complementary methods generalized from the betweenness centrality and the maximum flow. We find that the gas pipeline network has grown to satisfy a dual-purpose: on one hand, the major pipelines are crossed by a large number of shortest paths thereby increasing the efficiency of the network; on the other hand, a non-operational pipeline causes only a minimal impact on network capacity, implying that the network is error-tolerant. These findings suggest that the trans-European gas pipeline network is robust, i.e., error tolerant to failures of high load links.

Synchronisation of time--delay systems

We present the linear-stability analysis of synchronised states in coupled time-delay systems. There exists a synchronisation threshold, for which we derive upper bounds, which does not depend on the delay time. We prove that at least for scalar time-delay systems synchronisation is achieved by transmitting a single scalar signal, even if the synchronised solution is given by a high-dimensional chaotic state with a large number of positive Lyapunov-exponents. The analytical results are compared with numerical simulations of two coupled Mackey-Glass equations.

On the degenerated soft-mode instability

We consider instabilities of a single mode with finite wavenumber in inversion symmetric spatially one dimensional systems, where the character of the bifurcation changes from sub- to supercritical behaviour. Starting from a general equation of motion the full amplitude equation is derived systematically and formulas for the dependence of the coefficients on the system parameters are obtained. We emphasise the importance of nonlinear derivative terms in the amplitude equation for the behaviour in the vicinity of the bifurcation point. Especially the numerical values of the corresponding coefficients determine the region of coexistence between the stable trivial solution and stable spatially periodic patterns. Our approach clearly shows that similar considerations fail for the case of oscillatory instabilities.

Delayed feedback control of periodic orbits in autonomous systems

For controlling periodic orbits with delayed feedback methods the periodicity has to be known a priori. We propose a simple scheme, how to detect the period of orbits from properties of the control signal, at least if a periodic but nonvanishing signal is observed. We analytically derive a simple expression relating the delay, the control amplitude, and the unknown period. Thus, the latter can be computed from experimentally accessible quantities. Our findings are confirmed by numerical simulations and electronic circuit experiments

Mean field theory of critical coupled map lattices

We study the single-site approximation of the Perron-Frobenius equation for a coupled map lattice exhibiting a phase transition at a critical value g_c of the coupling constant. We found that the critical exponents are the same as in the usual mean-field theory of equilibrium statistical mechanics. Remarkably, the value of g_c is within six percent of the one previously obtained by numerical simulations with asynchronous updating.

Analytical Approach for Piecewise Linear Coupled Map Lattices

A simple construction is presented, which generalises piecewise linear one-dimensional Markov maps to an arbitrary number of dimensions. The corresponding coupled map lattice, known as a simplicial mapping in the mathematical literature, allows for an analytical investigation. Especially the spin Hamiltonian, which is generated by the symbolic dynamics is accessible. As an example a formal relation between a globally coupled system and an Ising mean field model is established. The phase transition in the limit of infinite system size is analysed and analytical results are compared with numerical simulations.

Weakly nonlinear analysis in spatially extended systems as a formal perturbation scheme

The well known concept, to reduce the spatio-temporal dynamics beyond instabilities of trivial states to amplitude modulated patterns, is reviewed from the point of view of a formal perturbation expansion for general dissipative partial differential equations. For codimension one instabilities closed analytical formulas for all coefficients of the resulting amplitude equation are given, with no further restriction on the basic equations of motion. Both the autonomous and the explicitly time-dependent case are discussed. For the latter, the problem of strong resonances is addressed separately. The formal character of the expansion allows for an analysis of higher-codimension instabilities like the Turing-Hopf instability and for the discussion of principal limits of the amplitude approach in the present form.

On the Collective Motion in Globally Coupled Chaotic Systems

A mean-field formulation is used to investigate the bifurcation diagram for globally coupled tent maps by means of an analytical approach. It is shown that the period doubling sequence of the single site map induces a continuous family of periodic states in the coupled system. This type of collective motion breaks the ergodicity of the coupled map lattice. The stability analysis suggests that these states are stable for weak coupling strength but opens the possibility for more complicated types of motion in the regime of moderate coupling.

Stochastic Resonance in Chaotic Spin-Wave Dynamics

We report the first experimental observation of noise-free stochastic resonance by utilizing the intrinsic chaotic dynamics of the system. To this end we have investigated the effect of an external periodic modulation on intermittent signals observed by high power ferromagnetic resonance in yttrium iron garnet spheres. Both the signal-to-noise ratio and the residence time distributions show the characteristic features of stochastic resonance. The phenomena can be explained by means of a one-dimensional intermittent map. We present analytical results as well as computer simulations.

On the Mechanism of Time--Delayed Feedback Control

The Pyragas method for controlling chaos is investigated in detail from the experimental as well as theoretical point of view. We show by an analytical stability analysis that the revolution around an unstable periodic orbit governs the success of the control scheme. Our predictions concerning the transient behaviour of the control signal are confirmed by numerical simulations and an electronic circuit experiment.

Dynamics of homogeneous magnetizations in strong transverse driving fields

Spatially homogeneous solutions of the Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert equation are analysed. The conservative as well as the dissipative case is considered explicitly. For the linearly polarized driven Hamiltonian system we apply canonical perturbation theory to uncover the main resonances as well as the global phase space structure. In the case of circularly polarized driven dissipative motion we present the complete bifurcation diagram including bifurcations up to codimension three.

Globally Coupled Maps: Almost Analytical Treatment of Phase Transitions

Bifurcations in a system of coupled maps are investigated. Using symbolic dynamics it is proven that for coupled shift maps the well known space--time--mixing attractor becomes unstable at a critical coupling strength in favour of a synchronized state. For coupled non--hyperbolic maps analytical and numerical evidence is given that arbitrary small coupling changes the dynamical behaviour. The anomalous dependence of fluctuations on the system size is attributed to these bifurcations.
