Exploring the nucleus in the context of low-energy QCD

These lecture notes address a central problem of theoretical nuclear physics: how to establish a relationship between low-energy, non-perturbative QCD and nuclear phenomenology which includes both nuclear matter and finite nuclei. We develop a microscopic covariant description of nuclear many-body dynamics constrained by chiral symmetry and in-medium QCD sum rules. A relativistic point-coupling model is derived, based on an effective Lagrangian with density-dependent contact interactions between nucleons. These interactions are constructed from chiral one- and two-pion exchange, combined with the large isoscalar nucleon self-energies that arise through changes in the quark condensate and the quark density at finite baryon density. Nuclear binding and saturation are almost completely generated by chiral (two-pion exchange) fluctuations in combination with Pauli effects, whereas strong scalar and vector fields of about equal magnitude and opposite sign, induced by changes of the QCD vacuum in the presence of baryonic matter, generate the large effective spin-orbit potential in finite nuclei. Promising results are found for the nuclear matter equation of state and for the bulk and single-nucleon properties of finite nuclei.

Chiral Dynamics in Nuclear Systems

A survey is given on selected topics concerning the role of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in low-energy QCD, and its dynamical implications for nuclear systems. This includes aspects of chiral thermodynamics (the temperature and density dependence of the chiral condensate). It also includes an update on the theory of low-energy (s-wave) pion-nuclear interactions relevant for deeply-bound states of pionic atoms and the quest for possible fingerprints of chiral symmetry restoration in nuclear systems.

Kinetic description of charmonium production in high-energy nuclear collisions

We study the evolution of charmonia as they collide with the constituents of the fireball produced in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. The latter evolves in a manner controlled by the equation of state as given by lattice QCD, and is constructed in such a way that the observed hadronic spectra are correctly reproduced. A kinetic description of charmonium interactions with both quark-gluon and hadronic degrees of freedom allows to study in detail the evolution in different regimes, controlled by collision energy, kinematics and geometry. The data collected at the CERN-SPS accelerator are well described and new estimates for J/psi production at BNL-RHIC are presented.

Quark mass dependence of the nucleon axial-vector coupling constant

We study the quark mass expansion of the axial-vector coupling constant g_A of the nucleon. The aim is to explore the feasibility of chiral effective field theory methods for extrapolation of lattice QCD results - so far determined at relatively large quark masses corresponding to pion masses larger than 0.6 GeV - down to the physical value of the pion mass. We compare two versions of non-relativistic chiral effective field theory: One scheme restricted to pion and nucleon degrees of freedom only, and an alternative approach which incorporates explicit Delta(1230) resonance degrees of freedom. It turns out that, in order to approach the physical value of g_A in a leading-one-loop calculation, the inclusion of the explicit Delta(1230) degrees of freedom is crucial. With information on important higher order couplings constrained from analyses of inelastic pion production processes, a chiral extrapolation function for g_A is obtained, which works well from the chiral limit across the physical point into the region of present lattice data. The resulting enhancement of our extrapolation function near the physical pion mass is found to arise from an interplay between long- and short- distance physics.

Chiral extrapolations of nucleon properties from lattice QCD

We report on recent work about the study of quark mass dependence of nucleon magnetic moments and axial-vector coupling constant. We examine the feasibility of chiral effective field theory methods for the extrapolation of lattice QCD data obtained at relative large pion masses down to the physical values.

Quark Mass Dependence of Nucleon Properties and Extrapolation from Lattice QCD

We summarize developments concerning the quark mass dependence of nucleon magnetic moments and the axial-vector coupling constant g_A. The aim is to explore the feasibility of chiral effective field theory methods for the extrapolation of lattice QCD results, from the relatively large quark masses that can be handled in such computations down to the physically relevant range.

Nucleon Magnetic Moments, their Quark Mass Dependence and Lattice QCD Extrapolations

We calculate the quark mass dependence of both isovector and isoscalar anomalous magnetic moments of the nucleon in a chiral effective field theory with explicit pion, nucleon and Delta(1232) degrees of freedom to leading-one-loop order. In the isovector sector we fit 3 unknown couplings of the effective Lagrangian to available lattice data and obtain a surprisingly well-behaved extrapolation function connecting the chiral limit, experimental data and the lattice simulations. We also discuss the polynomial quark mass dependence in the isoscalar sector and finally compare with the Pade formula of the Adelaide group.

Chiral Magnetism of the Nucleon

We study the quark mass expansion of the magnetic moments of the nucleon in a chiral effective field theory including nucleons, pions and delta resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. We point out that the usual powercounting applied so far to this problem misses important quark mass structures generated via an intermediate isovector M1 nucleon-delta transition. We propose a modified powercounting and compare the resulting chiral extrapolation function to available (quenched) lattice data. The extrapolation is found to work surprisingly well, given that the lattice data result from rather large quark masses. Our calculation raises the hope that extrapolations of lattice data utilizing chiral effective field theory might be applicable over a wider range in quark masses than previously thought, and we discuss some open questions in this context. Furthermore, we observe that within the current lattice data uncertainties the extrapolations presented here are consistent with the Pade fit ansatz introduced by the Adelaide group a few years ago.

Coordinate Space Distributions of Antiquark Flavor Asymmetries in the Proton

We examine the space-time properties of the distribution (dbar - ubar) and dbar/ubar in the proton. The difference of the antiquark distributions shows the expected peak at the approximate pion Compton wavelength and is supportative of the thesis that the meson cloud of the nucleon is at the origin of the asymmetry of (dbar - ubar), with the pion cloud playing a dominant role.

Axial U(1) dynamics in eta and eta' photoproduction

We discuss the sensitivity of eta and eta' photoproduction near threshold to the gluonic OZI breaking parameters in the U_A(1)-extended effective chiral Lagrangian for low-energy QCD. Our coupled-channels analysis hints at a strong correlation between the gluon-induced contributions to the eta' mass and the low-energy pp -> pp eta' reaction and the near-threshold behaviour of the gamma p -> eta p cross-section.

Nuclear Deep-Inelastic Lepton Scattering and Coherence Phenomena

This review outlines our present experimental knowledge and theoretical understanding of deep-inelastic scattering on nuclear targets. The emphasis is primarily on nuclear coherence phenomena, such as shadowing, where the key physics issue is the exploration of hadronic and quark-gluon fluctuations of a high-energy virtual photon and their passage through the nuclear medium. New developments in polarized deep-inelastic scattering on nuclei are also discussed, and more conventional binding and Fermi motion effects are summarized. The report closes with a brief outlook on vector meson electroproduction, nuclear shadowing at very large Q^2 and the physics of high parton densities in QCD.

Baryon masses in large Nc chiral perturbation theory

We analyse the baryon mass spectrum in a framework which combines the 1/Nc expansion with chiral perturbation theory. Meson loop contributions involving the full SU(3) octet of pseudoscalar Goldstone bosons are evaluated, and the influence of explicit chiral and flavor symmetry breaking by non-zero and unequal quark masses is investigated. We also discuss sigma terms and the strangeness contribution to the nucleon mass.

J/psi and eta_c in the nuclear medium: QCD sum rule approach

We investigate the masses of the lowest c\bar{c} states, the J/psi and eta_c, in nuclear matter using QCD sum rules. Up to dimension four, the differences between the operator product expansions in vacuum and in medium arise from the density-dependent change in the gluon condensate and from a new contribution proportional to the nucleon expectation value of the twist-2 gluon operator. Both terms together give an attractive shift of about 5-10 MeV to the J/psi and eta_c masses in nuclear matter.

Hadronic properties of the S_{11}(1535) studied by electroproduction off the deuteron

Properties of excited baryonic states are investigated in the context of electroproduction of baryon resonances off the deuteron. In particular, the hadronic radii and the compositeness of baryon resonances are studied for kinematic situations in which their hadronic reinteraction is the dominant contribution. Specifically, we study the reaction $d(e,e'S_{11})N$ at $Q^2\ge 1 GeV^2$ for kinematics in which the produced hadronic state reinteracts predominantly with the spectator nucleon. A comparison of constituent quark model and effective chiral Lagrangian calculations of the $S_{11}$ shows substantial sensitivity to the structure of the produced resonance.

Non-Perturbative Scales in Soft Hadronic Collisions at High Energies

We investigate the role of nonperturbative quark-gluon dynamics in soft high energy processes. In order to reproduce differential and total cross sections for elastic proton-proton and proton-antiproton-scattering at high energy and small momentum transfer it turns out that we need two scales, the gluonic correlation length and a confinement scale. We find a small gluonic correlation length, a = 0.2 fm, in accordance with recent lattice QCD results.
