The Structure of an 80 pc Long Massive Filament

Using new Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) 30m telescope $\rm N_2H^+$, $\rm C^{18}O$ $J$=1-0 and Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) telescope $\rm ^{13}CO$ and $\rm C^{18}O$ $J$=2-1 maps together with archival far-infrared continuum data, and $\rm ^{12}CO$, and $\rm ^{13}CO$ $J$=1-0 data, we present a comprehensive analysis of the massive filament CFG024.00$+$0.48 (G24) across clump-to-cloud scales. Our results show that G24 is an $\sim$80 pc giant filament with a total mass of $\sim$$10^5$ M$_{\odot}$. In the different tracers the filament width is measured to be about $\sim$2 times the beam size of the observations, as expected for power-law density distributions, giving beam-deconvolved widths in the range from 0.8 to 2.8 pc. We determine a line-of-sight thickness of $\sim$2.2 pc demonstrating that G24 is not an edge-on, flatten structure. The virial parameter obtained from line mass ($α_{\rm line,vir}=M_{\rm line,vir}/M_{\rm line}$) from the $\rm C^{18}O$ (1-0) data is 0.85, and that obtained from $Herschel$-based H$_2$ column density is 0.52, suggesting G24 is globally close to virial equilibrium. The distribution of the 40 dust clumps appears to have a ''two-tier'' fragmentation pattern. For the clump groups, the separation, with a mean/median of 3.68/3.46 pc, is very close to expected length associated with the maximum fragmentation growth rate of $λ_{\rm max}=3.55 \pm0.32$ pc estimated for the dust. However, the longitudinal centroid velocity profiles of $\rm C^{18}O$ and $\rm N_2H^+$ show oscillation patterns with wavelengths of 9.8$\pm$0.1 pc and 9.9$\pm$0.1 pc, respectively. This is $\sim$2 times larger than the corresponding values of $λ_{\rm max}$ of 4.96$\pm$0.63 pc and 4.65$\pm$1.34 pc, respectively. This suggests that the velocity structure is not dominated by flows directly associated with the fragmentation seen in the dust emission.

Globules and pillars in Cygnus X IV. Velocity-resolved [OI] 63 mu map of a peculiar proplyd-like object

We investigated an isolated, globule-shaped object (0.37x0.11 pc), located near the centre of the Cygnus OB2 cluster and named proplyd #7 in optical observations. The source can be a massive star (with or without disc) with a HII region or a G-type T Tauri star with a photo-evaporating disc, embedded in a molecular envelope. We obtained a map of the OI line at 63 micron with 6" angular resolution and employed archival data of the CII 158 micron line (14" resolution), using the upGREAT heterodyne receiver aboard SOFIA. We also collected IRAM 30m CO data at 1mm (11" resolution). All the lines were detected across the whole object. The peak integrated OI emission of ~5 K km/s is located ~10" west of an embedded YSO. The OI and CII data near the source show bulk emission at ~11 km/s and a line wing at ~13 km/s, while the 12CO 2-1 data reveal additional blue-shifted high-velocity emission. The KOSMA-tau PDR model can explain the emissions in the tail with a low external UV field (<350 Go, mostly consistent with our UV field estimates), but not at the location of the YSO. There, the high line intensities and increased line widths for all lines and a possible bipolar CO outflow suggest the presence of a protostellar disc. However, the existence of a thermal HII region, revealed by combining existing and new radio continuum data, points towards a massive star - and not a T Tauri-type one. We derived molecular and atomic gas masses of ~20 Msun and a few Msun, respectively. The photo-evaporation (only considering external illumination) lifetime of 1.6x10^5 yrs is shorter than the free-fall lifetime of 5.2x10^5 yrs; thus, we find that proplyd #7 might not have had the time to produce many more stars.

Simultaneous 22 GHz Water and 44 GHz Methanol Masers Survey of Ultracompact HII Regions

We have carried out a multi-epoch simultaneous survey of 22 GHz H$_2$O and 44 GHz Class I CH$_3$OH masers toward 103 ultracompact HII regions (UCHIIs) between 2010 and 2017. We detected H$_2$O and CH$_3$OH maser emission in 74 (72%) and 55 (53%) UCHIIs, respectively. Among them, 3 H$_2$O and 27 CH$_3$OH maser sources are new detections. These high detection rates suggest that the occurrence periods of both maser species are significantly overlapped with the UCHII phase of massive star formation. The CH$_3$OH maser lines always have small (< 10 km s$^{-1}$) relative velocities with respect to the natal molecular cores, while H$_2$O maser lines often show larger relative velocities. Twenty four H$_2$O maser-detected sources have maser lines at relative velocities > 30 km s$^{-1}$, and thirteen of them show extremely high-velocity (> 50 km s$^{-1}$) components. The appearance and disappearance of H$_2$O maser lines are quite frequent over six-month or one-year time intervals. In contrast, CH$_3$OH maser lines usually do not exhibit significant variations in the line intensity, velocity, or shape for the same periods. The isotropic luminosities of both masers appear to correlate with the bolometric luminosities of the central stars. This correlation becomes much stronger in the case that data points in the low- and intermediate-mass regimes are added. The maser luminosities also tend to increase with the radio continuum luminosities of UCHIIs and the submillimeter continuum luminosities of the associated dense cores.

Single dish performance of KVN 21-m radio telescopes:Simultaneous observations at 22 and 43 GHz

We report simultaneous multi-frequency observing performance at 22 and 43 GHz of the 21-m shaped-Cassegrain radio telescopes of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN). KVN is the first millimeter-dedicated VLBI network in Korea having a maximum baseline length of 480 km. It currently operates at 22 and 43 GHz and planed to operate in four frequency bands, 22, 43, 86, and 129 GHz. The unique quasioptics of KVN enable simultaneous multi-frequency observations based on efficient beam filtering and accuarate antenna-beam alignment at 22 and 43 GHz. We found that the offset of the beams is within <5 arcseconds over all pointing directions of antenna. The dual polarization, cooled HEMT receivers at 22 and 43 GHz result in receiver noise temperatures less than 40 K at 21.25-23.25 GHz and 80 K at 42.11-44.11 GHz. The pointing accuracies have been measured to be 3 arcseconds in azimuth and elevation for all antennas. The measured aperture efficiencies are 65%(K)/67%(Q), 62%(K)/59%(Q), and 66%(K)/60%(Q) for the three KVN antennas, KVNYS, KVNUS, and KVNTN, respectively. The main-beam efficiencies are measured to be 50%(K)/52%(Q), 48%(K)/50%(Q), and 50%(K)/47%(Q) for KVNYS, KVNUS, and KVNTN, respectively. The estimated Moon efficiencies are 77%(K)/90%(Q), 74%(K)/79%(Q), and 80%(K)/86%(Q) for KVNYS, KVNUS, KVNTN, respectively. The elevation dependence of the aperture efficiencies is quite flat for elevations > 20 degrees.

A Multi-Epoch, Simultaneous Water and Methanol Maser Survey toward Intermediate-Mass Young Stellar Objects

We report a multi-epoch, simultaneous 22 GHz H2O and 44 GHz class I CH3OH maser line survey towards 180 intermediate-mass young stellar objects, including 14 Class 0, 19 Class I objects, and 147 Herbig Ae/Be stars. We detected H2O and CH3OH maser emission towards 16 (9%) and 10 (6%) sources with one new H2O and six new CH3OH maser sources. The detection rates of both masers rapidly decrease as the central (proto)stars evolve, which is contrary to the trends in high-mass star-forming regions. This suggests that the excitations of the two masers are closely related to the evolutionary stage of the central (proto)stars and the circumstellar environments. H2O maser velocities deviate on average 9 km s^-1 from the ambient gas velocities whereas CH3OH maser velocities match quite well with the ambient gas velocities. For both maser emissions, large velocity differences (|v_{H2O} - v_{sys} | > 10 km s^-1 and |v_{CH3OH} - v_{sys}| > 1 km s^-1) are mostly confined to Class 0 objects. The formation and disappearance of H2O masers is frequent and their integrated intensities change by up to two orders of magnitude. In contrast, CH3OH maser lines usually show no significant change in intensity, shape, or velocity. This is consistent with the previous suggestion that H2O maser emission originates from the base of an outflow while 44 GHz class I CH3OH maser emission arises from the interaction region of the outflow with the ambient gas. The isotropic maser luminosities are well correlated with the bolometric luminosities of the central objects. The fitted relations are L_{H2O} = 1.71 * 10^{-9} (L_{bol})^{0.97} and L_{CH3OH} = 1.71 * 10^{-10} (L_{bol})^{1.22}.
