A parallel algorithm for fast reconstruction of primary vertices on heterogeneous architectures

The physics programme of the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider requires an efficient and precise reconstruction of the particle collision vertices. The LHCb Upgrade detector relies on a fully software-based trigger with an online reconstruction rate of 30 MHz, necessitating fast vertex finding algorithms. This paper describes a new approach to vertex reconstruction developed for this purpose. The algorithm is based on cluster finding within a histogram of the particle trajectory projections along the beamline and on an adaptive vertex fit. Its implementations and optimisations on x86 and GPU architectures and its performance on simulated samples are also discussed.

Microchannel cooling for the LHCb VELO Upgrade I

The LHCb VELO Upgrade I, currently being installed for the 2022 start of LHC Run 3, uses silicon microchannel coolers with internally circulating bi-phase \cotwo for thermal control of hybrid pixel modules operating in vacuum. This is the largest scale application of this technology to date. Production of the microchannel coolers was completed in July 2019 and the assembly into cooling structures was completed in September 2021. This paper describes the R\&D path supporting the microchannel production and assembly and the motivation for the design choices. The microchannel coolers have excellent thermal peformance, low and uniform mass, no thermal expansion mismatch with the ASICs and are radiation hard. The fluidic and thermal performance is presented.

Reducing the role of random numbers in matching algorithms for school admission

New methods for solving the college admissions problem with indifference are presented and characterised with a Monte Carlo simulation in a variety of simple scenarios. Based on a qualifier defined as the average rank, it is found that these methods are more efficient than the Boston and Deferred Acceptance algorithms. The improvement in efficiency is directly related to the reduced role of random tie-breakers. The strategy-proofness of the new methods is assessed as well.

Constraining new physics in B_s meson mixing

Neutral mesons exhibit a phenomenon called flavour mixing. As a consequence of a second order weak process the flavour eigenstates corresponding to the meson and its anti-meson are superpositions of two mass eigenstates. A meson produced in a flavour state changes into an anti-meson and back again as a function of time. Such flavour oscillations are considered sensitive probes of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this brief review I summarize the status of experimental constraints on mixing parameters in the B_s meson system.

The global covariance matrix of tracks fitted with a Kalman filter and an application in detector alignment

We present an expression for the covariance matrix for the set of state vectors describing a track fitted with a Kalman filter. We demonstrate that this expression facilitates the use of a Kalman filter track model in a minimum $χ^2$ algorithm for the alignment of tracking detectors. We also show that it allows to incorporate vertex constraints in such a procedure without refitting the tracks.
