Observation of Rydberg moiré excitons

Rydberg excitons, the solid-state counterparts of Rydberg atoms, have sparked considerable interest in harnessing their quantum application potentials, whereas a major challenge is realizing their spatial confinement and manipulation. Lately, the rise of two-dimensional moiré superlattices with highly tunable periodic potentials provides a possible pathway. Here, we experimentally demonstrate this capability through the observation of Rydberg moiré excitons (XRM), which are moiré trapped Rydberg excitons in monolayer semiconductor WSe2 adjacent to twisted bilayer graphene. In the strong coupling regime, the XRM manifest as multiple energy splittings, pronounced redshift, and narrowed linewidth in the reflectance spectra, highlighting their charge-transfer character where electron-hole separation is enforced by the strongly asymmetric interlayer Coulomb interactions. Our findings pave the way for pursuing novel physics and quantum technology exploitation based on the excitonic Rydberg states.

Elementary excitations in an integrable twisted J1-J2 spin chain in the thermodynamic limit

The exact elementary excitations in a typical U(1) symmetry broken quantum integrable system, that is the twisted J1-J2 spin chain with nearest-neighbor, next nearest neighbor and chiral three spin interactions, are studied. The main technique is that we quantify the energy spectrum of the system by the zero roots of transfer matrix instead of the traditional Bethe roots. From the numerical calculation and singularity analysis, we obtain the patterns of zero roots. Based on them, we analytically obtain the ground state energy and the elementary excitations in the thermodynamic limit. We find that the system also exhibits the nearly degenerate states in the regime of $η\in \mathbb{R}$, where the nearest-neighbor couplings among the z-direction are ferromagnetic. More careful study shows that the competing of interactions can induce the gapless low-lying excitations and quantum phase transition in the antiferromagnetic regime with $η\in \mathbb{R}+iπ$.

Reservoir engineering strong quantum entanglement in cavity magnomechanical systems

We construct a hybrid cavity magnomechanical system to transfer the bipartite entanglements and achieve the strong microwave photon-phonon entanglement based on the reservoir engineering approach. The magnon mode is coupled to the microwave cavity mode via magnetic dipole interaction, and to the phonon mode via magnetostrictive force (optomechanical-like). It is shown that the initial magnon-phonon entanglement can be transferred to the photon-phonon subspace in the case of these two interactions cooperating. In reservoir-engineering parameter regime, the initial entanglement is directionally transferred to the photon-phonon subsystem, so we obtain a strong bipartite entanglement in which the magnon mode acts as the cold reservoir to effectively cooling the Bogoliubov mode delocalized over the cavity and the mechanical deformation mode. Moreover, as the dissipation ratio between the cold reservoir mode and the target mode increases, we can achieve greater quantum entanglement and better cooling effect. Our results indicate that the steady-state entanglement is robust against temperature. The scheme may provides potential applications for quantum information processing, and is expected to be extended to other three-mode systems.

Tunable energy-level inversion in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

A method to realize controllable inversion of energy levels in a one-dimensional spin-orbit (SO)-coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensate under the action of a gradient magnetic field and harmonic-oscillator (HO) trapping potential is proposed. The linear version of the system is solved exactly. By adjusting the SO coupling strength and magnetic-field gradient, the energy-level inversion makes it possible to transform any excited state into the ground state. The full nonlinear system is solved numerically, and it is found that the results are consistent with the linear prediction in the case of the repulsive inter-component interaction. On the other hand, the inter-component attraction gives rise to states of superposition and edge types. Similar results are also reported for the system with the HO trap replaced by the box potential. These results suggest a possibility to realize any excited state and observe it in the experiment.

Emergent Quasiperiodicity from Polariton-phonon Hybrid Excitations in Waveguide Quantum Optomechanics

We investigate polariton-phonon hybrid excitations, which describe the collective excitations of emitter-photon polaritons and vibrational phonons, in a periodic array of vibrating two-level emitters interacting with waveguide photons. We demonstrate the emergence of an interaction-induced quasiperiodic structure caused by the interplay between phonon scatterings and waveguide-mediated long-range couplings. This quasiperiodicity fundamentally changes the excitation characteristics in the subradiant regime, which feature an appearance of topological edge states and a transition between ergodic and multifractal excitations. A possible realization consisting of an array of laser-cooled atoms trapped near an optical nanofiber is also proposed. Our results demonstrate the possibility of utilizing vibrations as a novel degree of freedom in the exploration of many-body physics with waveguide quantum electrodynamics systems.

Bessel Vortices in Spin-Orbit-Coupled Binary Bose-Einstein Condensates with Zeeman Splitting

We present an analysis of stationary solutions for two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling and Zeeman splitting. By introducing the generalized momentum operator, the linear version of the system can be solved exactly. The solutions are semi-vortices of the Bessel-vortex (BV) and modified Bessel-vortex (MBV) types, in the presence of the weak and strong Zeeman splitting, respectively. The ground states (GSs) of the full nonlinear system are constructed with the help of a specially designed neural network (NN). The GS of the mixed-mode type appears as cross-attraction interaction increases. The spin texture of the GS is produced in detail. It exhibits the Neel skyrmion structure for the semi-vortex GS of the BV type, and the respective skyrmion number is found in an analytical form. On the other hand, GSs of the MBV and mixed-mode types do not form skyrmions.

Finite-time quantum Otto engine with a squeezed thermal bath: Role of quantum coherence and squeezing in the performance and fluctuations

We consider a finite-time quantum Otto heat engine that consists of two isochoric (thermal-contact) process, where the system is alternatively coupled to a hot squeezed and a cold thermal reservoir, and two unitary driven strokes, where the system is isolated from these two baths and its von Neumann entropy keeps constant. Both quantum inner friction and coherence are generated along the driven stroke and coherence cannot be fully erased after the finite-time hot isochore. Using full counting statistics, we present the probability distribution functions of heat injection and total work per cycle, which are dependent on the time duration along each process. With these, we derive the analytical expressions for the thermodynamic quantities of the two-level heat engine, such as total work, thermodynamic efficiency, entropy production, and work fluctuations, in which effects of coherence, squeezing, inner friction and finite-time heat exchange are included. We then numerically determine the thermodynamic quantities and the fluctuations using the parameters employed in the experimental implementation. Our results clarify the role of coherence and squeezing in the performance and fluctuations in the quantum Otto engines.

Superfluid density and collective modes of fermion superfluid in dice lattice

The superfluid properties of attractive Hubbard model in dice lattice are investigated. It is found that three superfluid order parameters increase as the interaction increases. When the filling factor falls into the flat band, due to the infinite large density of states, the resultant superfluid order parameters are proportional to interaction strength, which is in striking contrast with the exponentially small counterparts in usual superfluid (or superconductor). When the interaction is weak, and the filling factor is near the bottom of the lowest band (or the top of highest band), the superfluid density is determined by the effective mass of the lowest (or highest) single-particle band. When the interaction is strong and filling factor is small, the superfluid density is inversely proportional to interaction strength, which is related to effective mass of tightly bound pairs. In the strong interaction limit and finite filling, the asymptotic behaviors of superfluid density can be captured by a parabolic function of filling factor. Furthermore, when the filling is in flat band, the superfluid density shows a logarithmic singularity as the interaction approaches zero. In addition, there exist three undamped collective modes for strong interactions. The lowest excitation is gapless phonon, which is characterized by the total density oscillations. The two others are gapped Leggett modes, which correspond relative density fluctuations between sublattices. The collective modes are also reflected in the two-particle spectral functions by sharp peaks. Furthermore, it is found that the two-particle spectral functions satisfy an exact sum-rule, which is directly related to the filling factor (or density of particle). The sum-rule of the spectral functions may be useful to distinguish between the hole-doped and particle-doped superfluid (superconductor) in experiments.

Superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition in a cavity optomagnonic system

The emerging hybrid cavity optomagnonic system is a very promising quantum information processing platform for its strong or ultrastrong photon-magnon interaction on the scale of micrometers in the experiment. In this paper, the superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition in a two-dimensional cavity optomagnonic array system has been studied based on this characteristic. The analytical solution of the critical hopping rate is obtained by the mean field approach, second perturbation theory and Landau second order phase transition theory. The numerical results show that the increasing coupling strength and the positive detunings of the photon and the magnon favor the coherence and then the stable areas of Mott lobes are compressed correspondingly. Moreover, the analytical results agree with the numerical ones when the total excitation number is lower. Finally, an effective repulsive potential is constructed to exhibit the corresponding mechanism. The results obtained here provide an experimentally feasible scheme for characterizing the quantum phase transitions in a cavity optomagnonic array system, which will offer valuable insight for quantum simulations.

Exact ground state and elementary excitations of a competing spin chain with twisted boundary condition

A novel Bethe ansatz scheme is proposed to investigate the exact physical properties of an integrable anisotropic quantum spin chain with competing interactions among the nearest, next nearest neighbor and chiral three spin couplings, where the boundary condition is the twisted one. The eigenvalue of the transfer matrix is characterized by its zero roots instead of the traditional Bethe roots. Based on the exact solution, the conserved momentum and charge operators of this U(1)-symmetry broken system are obtained. The ground state energy and density of rapidities are calculated. It is found that there exist three kinds of elementary excitations and the corresponding dispersion relations are obtained, which gives a different picture from that with periodic boundary condition.

Itinerant ferromagnetism of a dipolar Fermi gas with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling

We elucidate the itinerant ferromagnetism of a dipolar Fermi gas with a Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling by investigating the exotic phase diagrams at zero and finite temperature. It is revealed that the dipolar interaction along with spin-orbit coupling can corroborate the formation of ferromagnetism and the Raman coupling adversely eliminates the tendency to this ferromagnetism transition, which greatly transcends the general understanding of this subject with contact interaction only. We explore the ground states through the density and spin-flip distribution in momentum space, which exhibits novel degeneracy at strong Raman coupling indicated by a non-zero entropy at zero temperature. We calculate the transition temperatures well within the reach of an experimental system when altering the dipolar and spin-orbit coupling strength, which paves a way to the further experimental realization.

Defective Majorana zero modes in non-Hermitian Kitaev chain

Topological stability is an important property for topological materials. However, the non-Hermitian effects may change this situation. Here, we investigate the robustness of edge states in the non-Hermitian Kitaev chain with imbalanced tunneling term and superconducting pairing term. By defining the similarity of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) and magnetic factor, the coalescing phase diagram of the MZMs and corresponding spin polarization phase diagram are provided. Because of the non-Hermitian coalescence effect and non-Hermitian suppression effect induced by the breakdown of sublattice symmetry and particle-hole symmetry, the system emergence very interesting phenomenons, such as defective MZMs, number-anomalous bulk-boundary correspondence, coalescing of many-body ground states, the magnetic phase crossover without gap closing. Those novel non-Hermitian effects offer fresh insights into MZMs and topological physics.

Irrational Non-Abelian Statistics for Non-Hermitian Generalization of Majorana Zero Modes

In condensed matter physics, non-Abelian statistics for Majorana zero modes (or Majorana Fermions) is very important, really exotic, and completely robust. The race for searching Majorana zero modes and verifying the corresponding non-Abelian statistics becomes an important frontier in condensed matter physics. In this letter, we generalize the Majorana zero modes to non-Hermitian (NH) topological systems that show universal but quite different properties from their Hermitian counterparts. Based on the NH Majorana zero modes, the orthogonal and nonlocal Majorana qubits are well defined. In particular, due to the particle-hole-symmetry breaking, NH Majorana zero modes have irrational non-Abelian statistics with continuously tunable braiding Berry phase from pi/8 to 3pi/8. This is quite different from the usual non-Abelian statistics with fixed braiding Berry phase pi/4 and becomes an example of "irrational topological phenomenon". The one-dimensional NH Kitaev model is taken as an example to numerically verify the irrational non-Abelian statistics for two NH Majorana zero modes. The numerical results are exactly consistent with the theoretical prediction. With the help of braiding these two zero modes, the pi/8 gate can be reached and thus universal topological quantum computation becomes possible.

Manipulation and readout of spin states of a single-molecule magnet by a spin-polarized current

Single-molecule memory device based on a single-molecule magnet (SMM) is one of the ultimate goals of semiconductor nanofabrication technologies. Here, we study how to manipulate and readout the SMM's two spin-state of stored information that characterized by the maximum and minimum average value of the $Z$-component of the total spin of the SMM and the conduction-electron, which are recognized as the information bits "$1$" and "$0$". We demonstrate that the switching time depends on both the sequential tunneling gap $\varepsilon_{se}$ and the spin-selection-rule allowed transition-energy $\varepsilon_{trans}$, which can be tuned by the gate voltage. In particular, when the external bias voltage is turned off, in the cases of the unoccupied and doubly-occupied ground eigenstates, the time derivative of the transport current can be used to read out the SMM's two spin-state of stored information. Moreover, the tunneling strength of and the asymmetry of the SMM-electrode coupling have a strong influence on the switching time, but that have a slight influence on the readout time that being on the order of nanoseconds. Our results suggest a SMM-based memory device, and provide fundamental insight into the electrical controllable manipulation and readout of the SMM's two spin-state of stored information.

Phase engineering of chirped rogue waves in Bose-Einstein condensates with a variable scattering length in an expulsive potential

We consider a cubic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation governing the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with time-dependent coefficients in front of the cubic term and inverted parabolic potential. Under a special condition imposed on the coefficients, a combination of phase-imprint and modified lens-type transformations converts the GP equation into the integrable Kundu-Eckhaus (KE) equation with constant coefficients, which contains the quintic nonlinearity and the Raman-like term producing the self-frequency shift. The condition for the baseband modulational instability of CW states is derived, providing the possibility of generation of chirped rogue waves (RWs) in the underlying BEC model. Using known RW solutions of the KE equation, we present explicit first- and second-order chirped RW states. The chirp of the first- and second-order RWs is independent of the phase imprint. Detailed solutions are presented for the following configurations: (i) the nonlinearity exponentially varying in time; (ii) time-periodic modulation of the nonlinearity; (iii) a stepwise time modulation of the strength of the expulsive potential. Singularities of the local chirp coincide with valleys of the corresponding RWs. The results demonstrate that the temporal modulation of the s-wave scattering length and strength of the inverted parabolic potential can be used to manipulate the evolution of rogue matter waves in BEC.

Quasi Periodic Oscillations of Test Particles and Red-Blue Shifts of the Photons Emitted By the Charged Test Particles Orbiting the Charged Black Hole in the Presence of Quintessence and Clouds of Strings

Here we examine the circular motion of test particles and photons in the spacetime geometry of charged black hole surrounded by quintessence and clouds of strings for the equation of state parameter $ω_q=-2/3$. We observe that there exist stable circular orbits in this geometry for very small values of the quintessence and string cloud parameters, i.e., $0<γ<<1$ and $0<α<<1$. We observe that if the values of $γ$ and $α$ increase, the test particle can more easily escape the gravitational field of the black hole. While the effect of the charge $Q$ of the black hole on the effective potential is just opposite to that of the $γ$ and $α$. Further, we investigate the quasi-periodic oscillations of test particles near the stable circular orbits. With the increasing values of $Q$, the stable circular orbits get away from the central object; therefore, one can observe lower epicyclic frequencies away from the central gravitating source with the increase in the values of $Q$. The redshift parameter $z$ of the photons emitted by the charged test particles moving in the stable circular orbits around the central source increases with an increase in the parameter $α$ and decreases with an increase in the values of the charge $Q$. In the Banados-Silk-West (BSW) process study, we note that the centre of mass-energy at the horizon of this Riessner-Nordstrom black hole with quintessence and string clouds increases indefinitely if the charge of one of the colliding particles attains its critical value. For a better understanding of the study, we show the dependence of the radii of the circular orbits, energy and angular momentum of the particles, effective potential, effective force, quasi-periodic oscillations and red-blue shifts of photons of the test particles in the circular orbits on the parameters $α$, $γ$ and $Q$ graphically.

All-optical transistor with cavity polaritons

we investigate the transmission of probe laser beam in a coupled-cavity system with polaritons by using standard input-output relation of optical fields, and proposed a theoretical schema for realizing a polariton-based photonic transistor. On account of effects of exciton-photon coupling and single-photon optomechanical coupling, a probe laser field can be either amplified or attenuated by another pump laser field when it passes through a coupled-cavity system with polaritons. The Stokes and anti-Stokes scattered effect of output prober laser can also be modulated. Our results open up exciting possibilities for designing photonic transistors.

Non-Floquet engineering in periodically driven non-Hermitian systems

Floquet engineering, modulating quantum systems in a time periodic way, lies at the central part for realizing novel topological dynamical states. Thanks to the Floquet engineering, various new realms on experimentally simulating topological materials have emerged. Conventional Floquet engineering, however, only applies to time periodic non-dissipative Hermitian systems, and for the quantum systems in reality, non-Hermitian process with dissipation usually occurs. So far, it remains unclear how to characterize topological phases of periodically driven non-Hermitian systems via the frequency space Floquet Hamiltonian. Here, we propose the non-Floquet theory to identify different Floquet topological phases of time periodic non-Hermitian systems via the generation of Floquet band gaps in frequency space. In non-Floquet theory, the eigenstates of non-Hermitian Floquet Hamiltonian are temporally deformed to be of Wannier-Stark localization. Remarkably, we show that different choices of starting points of driving period can result to different localization behavior, which effect can reversely be utilized to design detectors of quantum phases in dissipative oscillating fields. Our protocols establish a fundamental rule for describing topological features in non-Hermitian dynamical systems and can find its applications to construct new types of Floquet topological materials.
