Higgs-like Excitations of Cold Atom System with Spin-orbit Coupling

The Higgs-like excitations, which distinguish from the Higgs amplitude mode in many-body system, are single-particle excitations in system with non-Abelian gauge potential. We investigate the Higgs-like excitations of cold atom system in artificial non-Abelian gauge potential. We demonstrate that when a non-Abelian gauge potential is reduced to Abelian potential, its Abelian part constructs spin-orbit coupling, and its non-Abelian part emerges Higgs-like excitations. The Higgs-like excitations induce a mass of the non-Abelian gauge field, which offsets the defect of massless of the gauge theories. We show that the mass of gauge field can affect the spin Hall currents which are produced by the spin-orbit coupling. We also discuss the observation of these phenomena in real experiment.

The Euler Number of Bloch States Manifold and the Quantum Phases in Gapped Fermionic Systems

We propose a topological Euler number to characterize nontrivial topological phases of gapped fermionic systems, which originates from the Gauss-Bonnet theorem on the Riemannian structure of Bloch states established by the real part of the quantum geometric tensor in momentum space. Meanwhile, the imaginary part of the geometric tensor corresponds to the Berry curvature which leads to the Chern number characterization. We discuss the topological numbers induced by the geometric tensor analytically in a general two-band model. As an example, we show that the zero-temperature phase diagram of a transverse field XY spin chain can be distinguished by the Euler characteristic number of the Bloch states manifold in a (1+1)-dimensional Bloch momentum space.

Super-additivity of quantum-correlating power

We prove that, when two local quantum channels are used paralleled, the quantum-correlating power (QCP) of the composed channel is no less than the sum of QCP of the two channels. For local channels with zero QCP, the super-activation of QCP is a fairly common effect, and proved to exist except for the trivial case where both of the channels are completely decohering channels or unitary operators. For general quantum channels, we show that the (not-so-common) additivity of QCP can be observed for the situation where a measuring-and-preparing channel is used together with a completely decohering channel.

Negative Magnetoresistance and Spin Filtering of Spin-Coupled Diiron-Oxo Clusters

Spin dependent transport has been investigated for an {\it open shell singlet} diiron-oxo cluster. Currents and magnetoresistances have been studied, as a function of spin state, within the non-equilibrium Green's function approach. The applied bias can be used for tuning the sign of the observed magnetoresistance. A colossal magnetoresistance ratio has been determined, on the order of to 6000$%$, for hydrogen anchoring. Applied biases lower than 0.3 V, in conjunction with sulfur anchoring, induce a negative magnetoresistance due to lowering of the anchor-scatterer tunneling barrier. In addition, the diiron-oxo cluster displays nearly perfect spin filtering for parallel alignment of the iron magnetic moments due to energetic proximity, relative to the Fermi level, of its highest occupied molecular orbitals.

Majorana Fermions in Periodically Driven Semiconductor-Superconductor Heterostructure

We propose a new approach to create Majorana fermions at the edge of a periodically driven semiconductor-superconductor Heterostructure. We calculate the quasi-energy spectrum of the periodically driven Heterostructure by using the Floquet's theory. When the interaction between different Brillouin zones of quasi-energy is neglected, one Majorana fermion can be created at each edge of the Heterostructure when the ratio of driven amplitude and driven frequency is larger than a minimum. Furthermore, when the interaction between the nearest Brillouin zones of quasi-energy is considered, we restrict the condition of creating Majorana fermions above with a lower limit of the driven frequency. We also discuss the experimental protocol of creating Majorana fermions in the periodically driven Heterostructure.

Collective modes of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases in the repulsive regime

We investigate the collective modes in the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with repulsive s-wave interaction. The interplay between spin-orbit coupling and atom-atom interactions plays the crucial role in the collective behaviors of Fermi gas. In contrast with ordinary Fermi liquid, spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas has strongly correlated spin and density excitations. Within the scheme of random phase approximation, we classify collective modes based on the symmetry group and determine their properties via the poles of corresponding correlation functions. Besides, the particle-hole continuum is obtained, where the imaginary part of these correlation functions become non-vanishing. We make comparisons with collective excitations in the ordinary Fermi liquid without spin-orbit coupling and in a helical liquid, i.e., surface states of a three dimensional topological insulator. We also propose an experimental protocol for detecting these collective modes and discuss corresponding experimental signatures in the ultracold Fermi gases experiment.

Quantum phase transition of cold atoms in the bilayer hexagonal optical lattices

We propose a scheme to investigate the quantum phase transition of cold atoms in the bilayer hexagonal optical lattices. Using the quantum Monte Carlo method, we calculate the ground state phase diagrams which contain an antiferromagnet, a solid, a superfluid, a fully polarized state and a supersolid. We find there is a supersolid emerging in a proper parameter space, where the diagonal long range order coexists with off-diagonal long range order. We show that the bilayer optical lattices can be realized by coupling two monolayer optical lattices and give an experimental protocol to observe those novel phenomena in the real experiments.

Normal state properties of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases in the upper branch of energy spectrum

We investigate normal state properties of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases with repulsive s-wave interaction, in the absence of molecule formation, i.e., in the so-called "upper branch". Within the framework of random phase approximation, we derive analytical expressions for the quasi-particle lifetime $τ_s$, the effective mass $m_s^*$, and the Green's function renormalization factor $Z_s$ in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. In contrast to spin-orbit coupled electron gas with Coulomb interaction, we show that the modifications are dependent on the Rashba band index s, and occur in the first order of the spin-orbit coupling strength. We also calculate experimental observable such as spectral weight, density of state and specific heat, which exhibit significant differences from their counterparts without spin-orbit coupling. We expect our microscopic calculations of these Fermi liquid parameters would have the immediate applications to the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases in the upper branch of the energy spectrum.

Topological Quantum Phase Transition in Synthetic Non-Abelian Gauge Potential

The method of synthetic gauge potentials opens up a new avenue for our understanding and discovering novel quantum states of matter. We investigate the topological quantum phase transition of Fermi gases trapped in a honeycomb lattice in the presence of a synthetic non- Abelian gauge potential. We develop a systematic fermionic effective field theory to describe a topological quantum phase transition tuned by the non-Abelian gauge potential and ex- plore its various important experimental consequences. Numerical calculations on lattice scales are performed to compare with the results achieved by the fermionic effective field theory. Several possible experimental detection methods of topological quantum phase tran- sition are proposed. In contrast to condensed matter experiments where only gauge invariant quantities can be measured, both gauge invariant and non-gauge invariant quantities can be measured by experimentally generating various non-Abelian gauges corresponding to the same set of Wilson loops.

Ground State Properties of Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose Gases for Arbitrary Interactions

We develop a field integral formalism to study spin-orbit-coupled (SOC) Bose gases with arbitrary interspecies interaction. We identify various features arising from the interplay of SOC and interspecies interaction, including a roton minimum in the excitation spectrum and dual effects of SOC on ground-state energies depending on interspecies interactions. Counterintuitively, we find that at low interspecies interaction the SOC stabilizes the system by suppressing the quantum depletion. We show that the static structure factor is immune to the SOC in the phase space where time-reversal symmetry is preserved. Furthermore, we present an alternate way of studying phase fluctuations of the system.

Inhomogeneous spin domain induced by the quadratic Zeeman effect in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We show two kinds of inhomogeneous spin domain possessing Néel-like domain walls in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate, which are induced by the positive and negative quadratic Zeeman effect (QZE) respectively. In both cases, the spin density distribution is inhomogeneous and has zeros where the magnetization vanishes. For positive and negative QZE, the spin patterns and topological structures are remarkably different. Such phenomena are due to the pointwise different axisymmetry-breaking caused by the pointwise different population exchange between the sublevels, arising uniquely from the QZE. We analyze in detail the inhomogeneous domain formation and related experimental observations for the spin-1 $^{87}$Rb and $^{23}$Na condensate.

Interaction and filling-induced quantum anomalous Hall effect in ultra-cold neutral Bose-Fermi mixture on hexagonal lattice

We investigate the quantum anomalous Hall effect in a mixture of ultra-cold neutral bosons and fermions held on a hexagonal optical lattice. In the strong atom-atom interaction limit, composite fermions composed of one fermion with bosons or bosonic holes in the mixture are formed. Such composite fermions have already been generated successfully in experiment [Nat. Phys. {\bf 7}, 642 (2011)]. Here we predict that this kind of composite fermions may provide a realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect by tuning the atom-atom interaction or the filling of the bosons in the mixture. We also discuss the corresponding experimental signatures of the quantum anomalous Hall effect in the Bose-Fermi mixture on hexagonal optical lattice.

Quantum anomalous Hall effect and tunable topological states in 3d transition metals doped silicene

We engineer quantum anomalous Hall effect in silicene via doping 3d transition metals. We show that there exists a stable quantum anomalous Hall effect in Vanadium doped silicene using both analytical model and Wannier interpolation. We also predict the quantum valley Hall effect and electrically tunable topological states could be realized in certain transition metal doped silicene where the energy band inversion occurs. Our finding provides new scheme for the realization of quantum anomalous Hall effect and platform for electrically controllable topological states.

Spin-orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates in Spin-dependent Optical Lattices

We investigate the ground-state properties of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in spin-dependent optical lattices. The competition between the spin-orbit coupling strength and the depth of the optical lattice leads to a rich phase diagram. Without spin-orbit coupling, the spin-dependent optical lattices separate the condensates into alternating spin domains with opposite magnetization directions. With relatively weak spin-orbit coupling, the spin domain wall is dramatically changed from Néel wall to Bloch wall. For sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling, vortex chains and antivortex chains are excited in the spin-up and spin-down domains respectively, corresponding to the formation of a lattice composed of meron-pairs and antimeron-pairs in the pseudospin representation. We also discuss how to observe these phenomena in real experiments.

Kondo metal of fermionic atoms in anisotropic triangular optical lattice

Quantum phase transition of fermionic atoms in anisotropic triangular optical lattice was investigated by dynamical cluster approximation combining with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. The temperature-interaction phase diagram for different hoping terms and the competition between the anisotropic parameter and interaction is presented. Our results show that the system undergoes Mott transition from Fermi liquid to Mott insulator while the repulsive interaction reach the critical value. The Kondo metal characterized by Kondo peak in the density of states is found in this systems and the pseudogap are suppressed at low temperature due to the Kondo effect. We also propose a feasible experiment protocol to observe these phenomenon in the anisotropic triangular optical lattice with the cold atoms, in which the hoping terms can be varied by the lattice depth and the atomic interaction can be adjusted via Feshbach resonance.

QED-based Optical Bloch Equations without electric dipole approximation: A model for a two-level atom interacting with a monochromatic X-ray laser beam

We derive a set of optical Bloch equations (OBEs) directly from the minimal-coupling Hamiltonian density of the bound-state quantum electrodynamics (bound-state QED). Such optical Bloch equations are beyond the former widely-used ones due to that there is no electric dipole approximation (EDA) on the minimal-coupling Hamiltonian density of the bound-state QED. Then our optical Bloch equations can describe a two-level atom interacting with a monochromatic light of arbitrary wavelength, which are suitable to study the spectroscopy and the Rabi oscillations of two-level atoms in X-ray laser beams since that the wavelength of X-ray is close to an atom to make the electric dipole approximation (EDA) invalid.

Spin-orbit coupling induced fractionalized Skyrmion excitations in rotating and rapidly quenched spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the fractionalized Skyrmion excitations induced by spin-orbit coupling in rotating and rapidly quenched spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. Our results show that the fractionalized Skyrmion excitation depends on the combination of spin-orbit coupling and rotation, and it originates from a dipole structure of spin which is always embedded in three vortices constructed by each condensate component respectively. When spin-orbit coupling is larger than a critical value, the fractionalized Skyrmions encircle the center with one or several circles to form a radial lattice, which occurs even in the strong ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic condensates. We can use both the spin-orbit coupling and the rotation to adjust the radial lattice. The realization and the detection of the fractionalized Skyrmions are compatible with current experimental technology.

Three dimensional ring vortex solitons and their stability in Bose-Einstein condensates under magnetic confinement

The three-dimensional study of the ring vortex solitons is conducted for both attractive and repulsive BECs subject to harmonic potential confinement. A family of stationary ring vortex solitons, which is defined by the radial excitation number and the winding number of the intrinsic vorticity, are obtained numerically for a given atomic interaction strength. We find that stabilities of the ground and radially excited states of the ring vortex soliton are dependent on the winding number differently. The ground state of the ring vortex soliton with the large winding number is unstable dynamically against random perturbation. The radially excited state of the ring vortex soliton with large winding number corresponds to the increased collapse threshold, and therefore can be made stable for sufficiently small atomic interaction strengths. The ground and radially excited states also demonstrate different dynamical evolutions under large atomic interaction strengths. The former exhibits simultaneously symmetrical splitting in the transverse plane, while the latter displays periodically expand-merge cycles in the longitudinal direction.
