The envelope mass of red giant donors in Type Ia supernova progenitors

We compute the remaining amounts of hydrogen in red giant donors to see whether the conflict between theory and observations can be overcome. By considering the mass-stripping effect from an optically thick wind and the effect of thermally unstable disk, we systematically carried out binary evolution calculation for WD + MS and WD + RG systems. Here, we focus on the evolution of WD + RG systems. We found that some donor stars at the time of the supernova explosion contain little hydrogen-rich material on top of the helium core (as low as 0.017 $M_{\odot}$), which is smaller than the upper limit to the amount derived from observations of material stripped-off by explosion ejecta. Thus, no hydrogen line is expected in the nebular spectra of these SN Ia. We also derive the distributions of the envelope mass and the core mass of the companions from WD + RG channel at the moment of a supernova explosion by adopting a binary population synthesis approach. We rarely find a RG companion with a very low-mass envelope. Furthermore, our models imply that the remnant of the WD + RG channel emerging after the supernova explosion is a single low-mass white dwarf (0.15 $M_{\odot}$ - 0.30 $M_{\odot}$). The absence of a hydrogen line in nebular spectra of SNe Ia provides support to the proposal that the WD + RG system is the progenitor of SNe Ia.

A comprehensive progenitor model for SNe Ia

Incorporating the effect of mass-stripping and accretion-disk instability on the evolution of WD binary, we carried out binary stellar evolution calculations for more than 1600 close WD binaries. As a result, the initial parameter spaces for SNe Ia are presented in an orbital period-secondary mass ($\log P_{\rm i}, M_{\rm 2}^{\rm i}$) plane. We confirmed that in a WD + MS system, the initial companion leading to SNe Ia may have mass from 1 $M_{\odot}$ to 5 $M_{\odot}$. The initial WD mass for SNe Ia from WD + MS channel is as low as 0.565 $M_{\odot}$, while the lowest WD mass from the WD + RG channel is 1.0 $M_{\odot}$. Adopting the results above, we studied the birth rate of SNe Ia via a binary population synthesis approach. We found that the Galactic SNe Ia birth rate from SD model is $2.55 - 2.9\times10^{\rm -3}$ ${\rm yr}^{\rm -1}$ (including WD + He star channel), which is slightly smaller than that from observation. If a single starburst is assumed, the distribution of the delay time of SNe Ia from the SD model is a weak bimodality, where WD + He channel contribute to SNe Ia with delay time shorter than $10^{\rm 8}$ yr and WD + RG channel to those with age longer than 6 Gyr.

WD + MS systems as the progenitor of SNe Ia

We show the initial and final parameter space for SNe Ia in a ($\log P^{\rm i}, M_{\rm 2}^{\rm i}$) plane and find that the positions of some famous recurrent novae, as well as a supersoft X-ray source (SSS), RX J0513.9-6951, are well explained by our model. The model can also explain the space velocity and mass of Tycho G, which is now suggested to be the companion star of Tycho's supernova. Our study indicates that the SSS, V Sge, might be the potential progenitor of supernovae like SN 2002ic if the delayed dynamical-instability model due to Han & Podsiadlowski (2006) is appropriate. Following the work of Meng, Chen & Han (2009), we found that the SD model (WD + MS) with an optically thick wind can explain the birth rate of supernovae like SN 2006X and reproduce the distribution of the color excess of SNe Ia. The model also predicts that at least 75% of all SNe Ia may show a polarization signal in their spectra.

Frequency separation variations of the solar low-degree p-modes

Variations of frequency separations of low-degree p-modes are studied over the solar activity cycle. The separations studied are obtained from the frequencies of low-degree p-modes of the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG). 10.7 cm radio flux is used as an index of solar activity. Small separations of the p-mode frequencies are considered to be mainly dependent on the conditions in stellar interiors. Thus they could be applied to diagnose the changes in the stellar interior. Our calculation results show that the magnitudes of variations of the mean large separations are less than 1 $σ$ over the solar activity cycle. Small separations show different behaviors in the ascending and descending phases of activity. In the ascending phase, variations of the small separations are less than 1 $σ$. However, the small separations have systematic shifts during 2004 - 2007. The shifts are roughly 1 $σ$ or more. The variations of the ratios of the small to large separations with time are similar to the changes of the small separations. The effects of the changes in the large separations on the ratios are negligible. The variations of the separations may be a consequence of the influence from the surface activity or systematic errors in measurements or some processes taking place in the solar interior.

Is SN 2006X from a WD + MS system with optically thick wind?

The single-degenerate channel is widely accepted as the progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Following the work of Meng, Chen and Han (2009), we reproduced the birth rate and age of supernovae like SN 2006X by the single-degenerate model (WD + MS) with an optically thick wind, which may imply that the progenitor of SN 2006X is a WD + MS system.

Companion Stars of Type Ia supernovae with different metallicities

Meng, Chen & Han (2009) comprehensively and systemically studied the WD + MS system by detailed binary evolution calculations. Following their studies, we have carried out a series of binary population synthesis studies about the properties of the companions of SNe Ia for different metallicities $Z$. We present the distributions of the masses, $M_{\rm 2}^{\rm SN}$, the radii, $R_{\rm 2}^{\rm SN}$, of companions, and the periods, $P_{\rm SN}$, and the ratios of separations to radii, $A/R_{\rm 2}^{\rm SN}$, of WD + MS systems for various $Z$ at the moment of supernova explosion. These arameters can be applied to constrain the numerical simulation of the interaction between the ejecta of a supernova and its companion. We also show the distributions of some integral properties of companions, i.e. the mass, the space velocity and the surface gravity, for various $Z$ after the interaction. The distributions may help to search companion in a supernova remnant. All the parameters above significantly change with $Z$. Incorporating the simulation results of interaction between supernovae ejecta and companions in Marietta et al. (2000) and Kasen et al. (2004) into our binary population synthesis study, we found that more than 75% of all supernovae have enough polarization signal which can be detected by spectropolarimetric observations. We also found that 13 to 14 per cent SNe Ia belong to the supernovae like 1991T, which is consistent with observations within errors. This may indicate that SNe 1991T-like have not any special properties in physics except for the viewing angle of an observer.

WD+MS Systems as the Progenitors of Type Ia Supernovae with Different Metallicities

The single-degenerate model for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is one of the two most popular models, in which a carbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) accretes hydrogen-rich material from its companion, increases its mass to the Chandrasekhar mass limit, and then explodes as a SN Ia. Incorporating the prescription of Hachisu et al. (1999a) for the accretion efficiency into Eggleton's stellar evolution code and assuming that the prescription is valid for \emph{all} metallicities, we carried out a detailed binary evolution study with different metallicities. We show the initial and final parameter space for SNe Ia in a ($\log P-M_{\rm 2}$) plane. The positions of some famous recurrent novae in the ($\log P-M_{\rm 2}$) plane, as well as a supersoft X-ray source (SSS), RX J0513.9-6951 are well explained by our model, and our model can also explain the space velocity and mass of Tycho G, which is now suggested to be the companion star of Tycho's supernova . Our study indicates that the SSS, V Sge, is a potential progenitor of supernovae like SN 2002ic if the delayed dynamical-instability model in Han & Podsiadlowski (2006) is appropriate.

Rotation profiles of solar-like stars with magnetic fields

The aim of this work is to investigate rotation profile of solar-like stars with magnetic fields. A diffusion coefficient of magnetic angular momentum transport is deduced. Rotating stellar models with different mass are computed under the effect of the coefficient. Then rotation profiles are obtained from the theoretical stellar models. The total angular momentum of solar model with only hydrodynamic instabilities is about 13 times larger than that of the Sun at the age of the Sun, and this model can not reproduce quasi-solid rotation in the radiative region. However, not only can the solar model with magnetic fields reproduce an almost uniform rotation in the radiative region, but its total angular momentum is consistent with helioseismic result at the level of 3 $σ$ at the age of the Sun. The rotation of solar-like stars with magnetic fields is almost uniform in the radiative region. But there is an obvious transition region of angular velocity between the convective core and the radiative region of models with 1.2 - 1.5 $M_{\odot}$, where angular velocity has a sharp radial change, which is different from the rotation profile of the Sun and massive stars with magnetic fields. Moreover the changes of the angular velocity in the transition region increase with the increasing in the age and mass.
