A Novel Stability Improvement Method of S-Band Magnetron Systems Based on Its Anode Current Feature

Magnetrons are widely used as a high-efficiency, large-power, and low-cost microwave source. This article proposes a method to improve the magnetron output characteristics based on regulating its anode current by a novel active distortion eliminator. It takes advantage of the constant current state of MOSFETs to suppress the anode current ripple and eliminate the magnetron output ripples. An improved switch-mode power supply is applied to a 1-kW commercial S -band magnetron in the experiment. The peak-to-peak anode current ripple is reduced from 31 to 7 mA. The spectral width of the free-running magnetron is decreased from 246 to 87 kHz. In the injection locking state, the spur noise is significantly reduced with a maximum suppression strength of 23 dB at a 100-Hz offset. The peak-to-peak value of the magnetron magnitude and phase jitter are suppressed to 15% and 16% of their original values at a power injection ratio of 0.13. This method provides a novel approach for stabilizing the output phase of an injection-locked magnetron, making it promising for applications in phased arrays, wireless power transfer, particle accelerators, large-power communication, and other scenarios that require high phase stability.

Improving the Robustness of the Advanced LIGO Detectors to Earthquakes

Teleseismic, or distant, earthquakes regularly disrupt the operation of ground--based gravitational wave detectors such as Advanced LIGO. Here, we present \emph{EQ mode}, a new global control scheme, consisting of an automated sequence of optimized control filters that reduces and coordinates the motion of the seismic isolation platforms during earthquakes. This, in turn, suppresses the differential motion of the interferometer arms with respect to one another, resulting in a reduction of DARM signal at frequencies below 100\,mHz. Our method greatly improved the interferometers' capability to remain operational during earthquakes, with ground velocities up to 3.9\,$\mu \mbox{m/s}$ rms in the beam direction, setting a new record for both detectors. This sets a milestone in seismic controls of the Advanced LIGO detectors' ability to manage high ground motion induced by earthquakes, opening a path for further robust operation in other extreme environmental conditions.

Topological background discrimination in the PandaX-III neutrinoless double beta decay experiment

The PandaX-III experiment plans to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0$\nu\beta\beta$) of $^{136}$Xe in the China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL). The experiment will use a high pressure gaseous Time Projection Chamber (TPC) to register both the energy and the electron track topology of an event. This article is devoted to the software side of the experiment. As software tool we use REST, a framework developed for the reconstruction and simulation of TPC-based detector systems. We study the potential for background reduction by introducing appropiate parameters based on the properties of 0$\nu\beta\beta$ events. We exploit for the first time not only the energy density of the electron track-ends, but also the electron scattering angles produced by an electron near the end of its trajectory. To implement this, we have added new algorithms for detector signal and track processing inside REST. Their assessment shows that background can be reduced by about 7 orders of magnitude while keeping 0$\nu\beta\beta$ efficiency above 20% for the PandaX-III baseline readout scheme, a 2-dimensional 3mm-pitch stripped readout. More generally, we use the potential of REST to handle 2D/3D data to assess the impact on signal-to-background significance at different detector granularities, and to validate the PandaX-III baseline choice. Finally, we demonstrate the potential to discriminate surface background events generated at the readout plane in the absence of $t_o$, by making use of event parameters related with the diffusion of electrons.

Charged line segments and ellipsoidal equipotentials

This is a survey of the electrostatic potentials produced by charged straight-line segments, in various numbers of spatial dimensions, with comparisons between uniformly charged segments and those having non-uniform linear charge distributions that give rise to ellipsoidal equipotentials surrounding the segments. A uniform linear distribution of charge is compatible with ellipsoidal equipotentials only for three dimensions. In higher dimensions, the linear charge density giving rise to ellipsoidal equipotentials is counter-intuitive --- the charge distribution has a maximum at the center of the segment and vanishes at the ends of the segment. Only in two dimensions is the continuous charge distribution intuitive --- for that one case of ellipsoidal equipotentials, the charge is peaked at the ends of the segment and minimized at the center.
