SVOM discovery of a strong X-ray outburst of the blazar 1ES~1959+650 and multi-wavelength follow-up with the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory

On December 6, 2024, 1ES 1959+650, one of the X-ray brightest blazars known, underwent a high-amplitude X-ray outburst detected by SVOM, the first such discovery with this mission. The source was subsequently monitored with SVOM and Swift from December 2024 to March 2025. We report the detection and multi-wavelength follow-up of this event, and describe the temporal and spectral evolution observed during the campaign. Data from SVOM/MXT, SVOM/ECLAIRs, and Swift/XRT were analyzed with log-parabola models to track flux and spectral variability. The source was detected in a bright state over the 0.3-50 keV range. During the three months of monitoring, the X-ray flux varied significantly, showing episodes of spectral hardening at high flux levels. The spectral curvature evolved more irregularly and did not show a clear trend with flux. A shift of the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) synchrotron peak to higher energies is seen when the flux increases. This constitutes the first blazar outburst discovered in X-rays by SVOM. The coordinated follow-up with Swift provided continuous coverage of the flare and highlights the strong complementarity of the two missions for time-domain studies of blazars. The flare shows no clear signatures of either Fermi I or Fermi II acceleration, suggesting a mixed Fermi I/II scenario.

Superconducting Diode sensor

We study the superconducting Josephson junction diode operating via the magnetic field of skyrmions. Inspired by the near-field optical microscopy, we propose to partially screen the magnetic field and analyze part-by-part the magnetic texture of the skyrmion. The detected asymmetric supercurrent is influenced by the skyrmionic magnetic field and magnetic texture. This enables the Josephson junction diode to function as a hyperfine sensor and to read out the information about the morphology of the complex magnetic textures. The proposed setup opens a new avenue in magnetometry and represents an alternative to the technologies based on the nitrogen-vacancy centers.

Skyrmion lattice hosted in synthetic antiferromagnets and helix modes

Thin ferromagnetic films can possess unconventional magnetic properties, opening a new road for using them in spintronic technologies. In the present work exploiting three different methods, we comprehensively analyze phason excitations of a skyrmion lattice in synthetic antiferromagnets. To analyze phason excitations of the skyrmion lattice, we have constructed an analytical model based on three coupled helices and found a linear gapless mode. Micromagnetic simulations also support this result. Moreover, a similar result has been achieved within the rigid skyrmion lattice model based on the coupled Thiele's equations, when the coupling between skyrmions in different layers of the synthetic antiferromagnetic is comparable to or larger than the intralayer coupling. In addition, we also consider the orbital angular momentum and spin pumping current associated with phason excitations. Due to the gapless excitations in the case of skyrmion lattice, the pumping current is nonzero for the arbitrary frequency of pumping microwaves. In the case of individual skyrmions, no current is pumped when microwave frequency is inside the gap of the spectrum of individual skyrmions.

Skyrmion Echo in a system of interacting Skyrmions

We consider helical rotation of skyrmions confined in the potentials formed by nano-disks. Based on numerical and analytical calculations we propose the skyrmion echo phenomenon. The physical mechanism of the skyrmion echo formation is also proposed. Due to the distortion of the lattice, impurities, or pinning effect, confined skyrmions experience slightly different local fields, which leads to dephasing of the initial signal. The interaction between skyrmions also can contribute to the dephasing process. However, switching the magnetization direction in the nanodiscs (e.g. by spin transfer torque) also switches the helical rotation of the skyrmions from clockwise to anticlockwise (or vice-versa), and this restores the initial signal (which is the essence of skyrmion echo).

A Peculiarly Short-duration Gamma-Ray Burst from Massive Star Core Collapse

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been phenomenologically classified into long and short populations based on the observed bimodal distribution of duration. Multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observations in recent years have revealed that in general long GRBs originate from massive star core collapse events, whereas short GRBs originate from binary neutron star mergers. It has been known that the duration criterion is sometimes unreliable, and multi-wavelength criteria are needed to identify the physical origin of a particular GRB. Some apparently long GRBs have been suggested to have a neutron star merger origin, whereas some apparently short GRBs have been attributed to genuinely long GRBs whose short, bright emission is slightly above the detector's sensitivity threshold. Here we report the comprehensive analysis of the multi-wavelength data of a bright short GRB 200826A. Characterized by a sharp pulse, this burst shows a duration of 1 second and no evidence of an underlying longer-duration event. Its other observational properties such as its spectral behaviors, total energy, and host galaxy offset, are, however, inconsistent with those of other short GRBs believed to originate from binary neutron star mergers. Rather, these properties resemble those of long GRBs. This burst confirms the existence of short duration GRBs with stellar core-collapse origin, and presents some challenges to the existing models.

Stratonovich-Ito integration scheme in ultrafast spin caloritronics

The magnonic spin Seebeck effect is a key element of spin caloritronic, a field that exploits thermal effects for spintronic applications. Early studies were focused on investigating the steady-state nonequilibrium magnonic spin Seebeck current, and the underlying physics of the magnonic spin Seebeck effect is now relatively well established. However, the initial steps of the formation of the spin Seebeck current are in the scope of recent interest. To address this dynamical aspect theoretically we propose here a new approach to the time-resolved spin Seebeck effect. Our method exploits the supersymmetric theory of stochastics and Ito - Stratonovich integration scheme. We found that in the early step the spin Seebeck current has both nonzero transversal and longitudinal components. As the magnetization dynamics approaches the steady-state, the transversal components decay through dephasing over the dipole-dipole reservoir. The time scale for this process is typically in the sub-nanoseconds pointing thus to the potential of an ultrafast control of the dynamical spin Seebeck during its buildup.

The optical tweezer of ferroelectric skyrmions

Strong magneto-electric coupling in two-dimensional helical materials leads to a peculiar type of topologically protected solutions -- skyrmions. Coupling between the net ferroelectric polarization and magnetization allows control of the magnetic texture with an external electric field. In this work we propose the model of optical tweezer -- a particular configuration of an external electric field and Gaussian laser beam that can trap or release the skyrmions in a highly controlled manner. Functionality of such a tweezer is visualized by micromagnetic simulations and model analysis.

Influence of spin-orbit and spin-Hall effects on the spin Seebeck current beyond linear response

We study the spin transport theoretically in heterostructures consisting of a ferromagnetic metallic thin film sandwiched between heavy-metal and oxide layers. The spin current in the heavy metal layer is generated via the spin Hall effect, while the oxide layer induces at the interface with the ferromagnetic layer a spin-orbital coupling of the Rashba type. Impact of the spin Hall effect and Rashba spin-orbit coupling on the spin Seebeck current is explored with a particular emphasis on nonlinear effects. Technically, we employ the Fokker-Planck approach and contrast the analytical expressions with full numerical micromagnetic simulations. We show that when an external magnetic field is aligned parallel (antiparallel) to the Rashba field, the spin-orbit coupling enhances (reduces) the spin pumping current. In turn, the spin Hall effect and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are shown to increase the spin pumping current.

Thermoelastic enhancement of the magnonic spin Seebeck effect in thin films and bulk samples

A non-uniform temperature profile may generate a pure spin current in magnetic films, as observed for instance in the spin Seebeck effect. In addition, thermally induced elastic deformations may set in that could affect the spin current. A self-consistent theory of the magnonic spin Seebeck effect including thermally activated magneto-elastic effects is presented and analytical expressions for the thermally activated deformation tensor and dispersion relations for coupled magneto-elastic modes are obtained. We derived analytical results for bulk (3D) systems and thin magnetic (2D) films. We observed that the displacement vector and the deformation tensor in bulk systems decay asymptotically as $u\sim1/R^{2}$ and $\varepsilon\sim1/R^{3}$, respectively, while the decays in thin magnetic films proceed slower following $u\sim1/R$ and $\varepsilon\sim1/R^{2}$. The dispersion relations evidence a strong anisotropy in the magnetic excitations. We observed that a thermoelastic steady state deformation may lead to both an enchantment or a reduction of the gap in the magnonic spectrum. The reduction of the gap increases the number of magnons contributing to the spin Seebeck effect and offers new possibilities for the thermoelastic control of the Spin Seebeck effect.

Electrically driven magnetic antenna based on multiferroic composites

We suggest and demonstrate via large scale numerical simulations an electrically operated spin- wave inducer based on composite multiferroic junctions. Specifcally, we consider an interfacially coupled ferromagnetic/ferroelectric structure that emits controllably spin waves in the ferromagnets if the ferroelectric polarization is poled by an external electric field. The roles of geometry and material properties are discussed.

The Deep and Transient Universe in the SVOM Era: New Challenges and Opportunities - Scientific prospects of the SVOM mission

To take advantage of the astrophysical potential of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), Chinese and French astrophysicists have engaged the SVOM mission (Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor). Major advances in GRB studies resulting from the synergy between space and ground observations, the SVOM mission implements space and ground instrumentation. The scientific objectives of the mission put a special emphasis on two categories of GRBs: very distant GRBs at z$>$5 which constitute exceptional cosmological probes, and faint/soft nearby GRBs which allow probing the nature of the progenitors and the physics at work in the explosion. These goals have a major impact on the design of the mission: the on-board hard X-ray imager is sensitive down to 4 keV and computes on line image and rate triggers, and the follow-up telescopes on the ground are sensitive in the NIR. At the beginning of the next decade, SVOM will be the main provider of GRB positions and spectral parameters on very short time scale. The SVOM instruments will operate simultaneously with a wide range of powerful astronomical devices. This rare instrumental conjunction, combined with the relevance of the scientific topics connected with GRB studies, warrants a remarkable scientific return for SVOM. In addition, the SVOM instrumentation, primarily designed for GRB studies, composes a unique multi-wavelength observatory with rapid slew capability that will find multiple applications for the whole astronomy community beyond the specific objectives linked to GRBs. This report lists the scientific themes that will benefit from observations made with SVOM, whether they are specific GRB topics, or more generally all the issues that can take advantage of the multi-wavelength capabilities of SVOM.

Thermally induced magnonic spin current, thermomagnonic torques and domain wall dynamics in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Thermally activated domain wall (DW) motion in magnetic insulators has been considered theoretically, with a particular focus on the role of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) and thermomagnonic torques. The thermally assisted DW motion is a consequence of the magnonic spin current due to the applied thermal bias. In addition to the exchange magnonic spin current and the exchange adiabatic and the entropic spin transfer torques, we also consider the DMI-induced magnonic spin current, thermomagnonic DMI field-like torque and the DMI entropic torque. Analytical estimations are supported by numerical calculations. We found that the DMI has a substantial influence on the size and the geometry of DWs, and that the DWs become oriented parallel to the long axis of the nanostrip. Increasing the temperature smoothes the DWs. Moreover, the thermallyinduced magnonic current generates a torque on the DWs, which is responsible for their motion. From our analysis it follows that for a large enough DMI the influence of DMI-induced field-like torque is much stronger than that of the DMI and the exchange entropic torques. By manipulating the strength of the DMI constant, one can control the speed of the DW motion, and the direction of the DW motion can be switched, as well. We also found that DMI not only contributes to the total magnonic current, but also it modifies the exchange magnonic spin current, and this modification depends on the orientation of the steady state magnetization. The observed phenomenon can be utilized in spin caloritronics devices, for example in the DMI based thermal diodes. By switching the magnetization direction, one can rectify the total magnonic spin current.

sigma and f_0(980) substructures from gamma-gamma to pi-pi, J/psi, phi radiative and D_s semi-leptonic decays

Using an improved "analytic K-matrix model", we reconsider the extraction of the sigma/f_0(600) and f_0(980) gamma-gamma widths from gamma-gamma to pi-pi scatterings data of Crystal Ball and Belle. Our main results are summarized in Tables 3 and 4. The averaged sigma "direct width" to gamma-gamma is 0.16(3) keV which confirms a previous result of [1] and which does neither favour a large four-quark (diquark-antidiquark) nor a molecule nor a pure \bar qq component. The "direct width" of the f_0(980) of 0.28(2) keV is much larger than the four-quark expectation but can be compatible with a \bar ss or gluonium component. We also found that the rescattering part of the amplitude is relatively large indicating an important contribution of the meson loops in the determination of the gamma-gamma total widths. This is mainly due to the large couplings of the sigma and f_0(980) to pi-pi and/or \bar KK, which can also be due to a light scalar gluonium with large OZI violating couplings but not necessary to a four-quark or molecule state. Our average results for the total (direct+rescattering) gamma-gamma widths: Gamma_sigma^{tot}= 3.08(82) keV, Gamma_{f_0}^{tot}= 0.16(1) keV} are comparable with the ones from dispersion relations and PDG values. Using the parameters from QCD spectral sum rules, we complete our analysis by showing that the production rates of unmixed scalar gluonia sigma_B(1) and G (1.5-1.6) agree with the data from J/ψ, phi radiative and D_s semi-leptonic decays.

The sigma and f_0(980) from K_e4+pi-pi, gamma-gamma scatterings, J/psi, phi to gamma sigma_B and D_s to l nu sigma_B

We extract the pole positions, hadronic and gamma-gamma widths of sigma and f_0(980, from pi-pi and gamma-gamma scattering data using an improved analytic K-matrix model. Our results favour a large gluon component for the sigma and a \bar ss or/and gluon component for the f_0(980) but neither a large four-quark nor a molecule component. Gluonium sigma_B production from J/psi, phi radiative and D_s semi-leptonic decays are also discussed.

The sigma and f_0(980) from Ke4 + pi-pi scatterings data

We systematically reconsider, within an improved "analytic K-matrix model", the extraction of the sigma = f_0(600) and f_0(980) masses, widths and hadronic couplings using new Ke4 = K-->pi-pi e nu_e data on pi-pi phase shift below 390 MeV and different sets of pi-pi--> pi-pi / K-K scatterings data from 400 MeV to 1.4 GeV. Our results are summarized in Tables 1, 2 and 5. In units of MeV, the complex poles are: M_sigma=452(12) - i 260(15) and M_f=981(34) -i 18(11), which are comparable with some recent high-precision determinations and with PDG values. Besides some other results, we find: |g_{sigma K+K-}|/|g_{sigma pi+pi-}|=0.37(6) which confirms a sizeable g_{sigma K+K-} coupling found earlier, and which disfavours a large pi-pi molecule or four-quark component of the sigma, while its broad pi-pi width (relative to the one of the rho-meson) cannot be explained within a \bar qq scenario. The narrow pi-pi width of the f_0(980) and the large value: |g_{f K+K-}|/|g_{f pi+pi-}|=2.59(1.34), excludes its pure (\bar uu+\bar dd) content. A significant gluonium component eventually mixed with \bar qq appears to be necessary for evading the previous difficulties.

The hematite (alpha-Fe_2 O_3) (0001) surface: evidence for domains of distinct chemistry

Using spin-density functional theory we investigated various possible structures of the hematite (0001) surface. Depending on the ambient oxygen partial pressure, two geometries are found to be particularly stable under thermal equilibrium: one being terminated by iron and the other by oxygen. Both exhibit huge surface relaxations (-57 % for the Fe- and -79 % for the O-termination) with important consequences for the surface electronic and magnetic properties. With scanning tunneling microscopy we observe two different surface terminations coexisting on single crystalline alpha-Fe_2 O_3 (0001) films, which were prepared in high oxygen pressures.
