SN 2025aico: Early observations of a faint Type IIb supernova with a low-mass envelope

We aimed to investigate the physical properties and the underlying explosion mechanisms of the Type IIb SN 2025aico. Through a comprehensive analysis of early-phase optical light curves and spectroscopic data, we aim to constrain the fundamental explosion parameters and evaluate the physical state of the event. We present early multi-band optical imaging and low-resolution optical spectroscopic follow-up observations of the Type IIb SN 2025aico, spanning approximately 70 days from the explosion. We constrain the properties of SN 2025aico by utilizing a hybrid model that combines shock-cooling emission and radioactively powered diffusion, as well as by analyzing the spectroscopic evolution. We use various approaches to constrain the 56Ni mixing from early data, and also compared our spectra with models to constrain the properties of the progenitor. The explosion epoch of SN 2025aico is estimated to be MJD 61032.69, while the rise time in the r_M-band is 22.30 +/- 0.70 days. The peak pseudo-bolometric luminosity in the optical bands is L_opt = (4.07 +/- 0.10) x 10^41 erg/s. The fitting yields a moderate to relatively low 56Ni mass of M_Ni = 0.033 +0.006/-0.004 M_sun and an ejecta mass of M_ej = 2.79 +0.21/-0.18 M_sun. The photospheric velocity near the bolometric peak, measured from the Fe II lambda 5169 line, is 6450 +180/-160 km/s. The derived envelope properties suggest a compact He-star progenitor possessing an H-rich envelope of M_env approx. 0.01 M_sun and a radius of R_env approx. 6-10 R_sun. The derived physical properties of SN 2025aico indicate an origin from a moderate-mass, stripped He-star in a compact binary system, characterized by a minimal residual hydrogen envelope. The explosion itself demonstrates weak to moderate 56Ni mixing throughout the ejecta.

An energetic dirty fireball detected in soft X-rays

The collapse of massive stars drives explosions that power relativistic fireballs. If only a small amount of matter is entrained, such clean fireballs can expand with Lorentz factors $Γ> 100$, accounting for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). It has been hypothesized that energetic explosions with more baryon contamination, dubbed ``dirty fireballs'', may exist in nature, but they have not been observed. Here we report the observation of an extragalactic fast X-ray transient, EP241113a, detected by Einstein Probe. Compared to GRBs, it has a similar isotropic energy of $1.4\times 10^{51}$ erg, but significantly lower spectral peak energy. Theoretical modeling of its early X-ray afterglow suggests a relativistic jet with a low Lorentz factor of $Γ\sim 20$ aligned close to the line-of-sight, signifying the prototype of a dirty fireball.

Massive stars exploding in a He-rich circumstellar medium XII. SN 2024acyl: A fast, linearly declining Type Ibn supernova with early flash-ionisation features

We present a photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the Type Ibn supernova (SN) 2024acyl. It rises to an absolute magnitude peak of about -17.58 mag in 10.6 days, and displays a rapid linear post-peak light-curve decline in all bands, similar to most SNe Ibn. The optical pseudobolometric light curve peaks at $(3.5\pm0.8) \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$, with a total radiated energy of $(5.0\pm0.4) \times 10^{48}$ erg. The spectra are dominated by a blue continuum at early stages, with narrow P Cygni He I lines and flash-ionisation emission lines of C III, N III, and He II. The P Cygni He I features gradually evolve and become emission-dominated in late-time spectra. Our multi-band light-curve modelling yields estimates of the ejecta mass of $M_{\rm ej} = 0.49^{+0.11}_{-0.09}$ M$_\odot$ with a kinetic energy of $E_{\rm k} = 0.06^{+0.01}_{-0.01} \times 10^{51}$ erg, and a $^{56}$Ni mass of $M_{\rm Ni} = 0.018$ M$_\odot$. The inferred CSM properties are characterised by a mass of $M_{\rm CSM} = 0.51^{+0.05}_{-0.04}$ M$_\odot$, an inner radius of $R_0 = 17.8^{+3.6}_{-3.0}$ AU, and a density of $ρ_{\rm CSM} =(8.3_{-1.2}^{+2.7})\times10^{-12}$ g cm$^{-3}$. The multi-epoch spectra are well reproduced by the CMFGEN/he4p0 model, corresponding to a He-ZAMS mass of 4 M$_\odot$ (H-ZAMS mass 18.11 M$_\odot$, pre-SN mass 3.16 M$_\odot$). These findings are consistent with a scenario of an SN powered by ejecta-CSM interaction, originating from a low-mass helium star that evolved within an interacting binary system where the CSM with some residual hydrogen may originate from the mass-transfer process. In addition, a channel of core-collapse explosion of a late-type Wolf-Rayet star with H, or an Ofpe/WN9 star with fallback accretion, cannot be entirely ruled out.

BASSET: Bandpass-Adaptive Single-pulse SEarch Toolkit -- Optimized Sub-Band Pulse Search Strategies for Faint Narrow-Band FRBs

The existing single-pulse search algorithms for fast radio bursts (FRBs) do not adequately consider the frequency bandpass pattern of the pulse, rendering them incomplete for the relatively narrow-spectrum detection of pulses. We present a new search algorithm for narrow-band pulses to update the existing standard pipeline, Bandpass-Adaptive Single-pulse SEarch Toolkit (BASSET). The BASSET employs a time-frequency correlation analysis to identify and remove the noise involved by the zero-detection frequency band, thereby enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the pulses. The BASSET algorithm was implemented on the FAST real dataset of FRB 20190520B, resulting in the discovery of additional 79 pulses through reprocessing. The new detection doubles the number of pulses compared to the previously known 75 pulses, bringing the total number of pulses to 154. In conjunction with the pulse calibration and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulated injection experiments, this work updates the quantified parameter space of the detection rate. Moreover, a parallel-accelerated version of the BASSET code was provided and evaluated through simulation. BASSET has the capacity of enhancing the detection sensitivity and the SNR of the narrow-band pulses from the existing pipeline, offering high performance and flexible applicability. BASSET not only enhances the completeness of the low-energy narrow-band pulse detection in a more robust mode, but also has the potential to further elucidate the FRB luminosity function at a wider energy scale.

The First Data Release (DR1) of the LAMOST general survey

The Large sky Area Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) General Survey is a spectroscopic survey that will eventually cover approximately half of the celestial sphere and collect 10 million spectra of stars, galaxies and QSOs. Objects both in the pilot survey and the first year general survey are included in the LAMOST First Data Release (DR1). The pilot survey started in October 2011 and ended in June 2012, and the data have been released to the public as the LAMOST Pilot Data Release in August 2012. The general survey started in September 2012, and completed its first year of operation in June 2013. The LAMOST DR1 includes a total of 1202 plates containing 2,955,336 spectra, of which 1,790,879 spectra have observed signal-to-noise S/N >10. All data with S/N>2 are formally released as LAMOST DR1 under the LAMOST data policy. This data release contains a total of 2,204,696 spectra, of which 1,944,329 are stellar spectra, 12,082 are galaxy spectra and 5,017 are quasars. The DR1 includes not only spectra, but also three stellar catalogues with measured parameters: AFGK-type stars with high quality spectra (1,061,918 entries), A-type stars (100,073 entries), and M stars (121,522 entries). This paper introduces the survey design, the observational and instrumental limitations, data reduction and analysis, and some caveats. Description of the FITS structure of spectral files and parameter catalogues is also provided.

Determination of z~0.8 neutral hydrogen fluctuations using the 21 cm intensity mapping auto-correlation

The large-scale distribution of neutral hydrogen in the Universe will be luminous through its 21 cm emission. Here, for the first time, we use the auto-power spectrum of 21 cm intensity fluctuations to constrain neutral hydrogen fluctuations at z~0.8. Our data were acquired with the Green Bank Telescope and span the redshift range 0.6 < z < 1 over two fields totalling ~41 deg. sq. and 190 h of radio integration time. The dominant synchrotron foregrounds exceed the signal by ~10^3, but have fewer degrees of freedom and can be removed efficiently. Even in the presence of residual foregrounds, the auto-power can still be interpreted as an upper bound on the 21 cm signal. Our previous measurements of the cross-correlation of 21 cm intensity and the WiggleZ galaxy survey provide a lower bound. Through a Bayesian treatment of signal and foregrounds, we can combine both fields in auto- and cross-power into a measurement of Omega_HI b_HI = [0.62^{+0.23}_{-0.15}] * 10^{-3} at 68% confidence with 9% systematic calibration uncertainty, where Omega_HI is the neutral hydrogen (HI) fraction and b_HI is the HI bias parameter. We describe observational challenges with the present data set and plans to overcome them.

Absence of holelike Fermi surface in superconducting K0.8Fe1.7Se2 revealed by ARPES

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the new iron-based superconductor K0.8Fe1.7Se2 (Tc ~ 30 K). Clear band dispersion is observed with the overall bandwidth renormalized by a factor of 2.5 compared to our local density approximation calculations, indicating relatively strong correlation effects. Only an electronlike band crosses the Fermi energy, forming a nearly circular Fermi surface (FS) at M (π, 0). The holelike band at Γ sinks ~ 90 meV below the Fermi energy, with an indirect band gap of 30 meV to the bottom of the electronlike band. The observed FS topology in this superconductor favors (π, π) inter-FS scattering between the electronlike FSs at the M points, in sharp contrast with other iron-based superconductors which favor (π, 0) inter-FS scattering between holelike and electronlike FSs.

Heavy and Light Pentaquark Chiral Lagrangian

Using the SU(3) flavor symmetry, we construct the chiral Lagrangians for the light and heavy pentaquarks. The correction from the nonzero quark is taken into account perturbatively. We derive the Gell-Mann$-$Okubo type relations for various pentaquark multiplet masses and Coleman-Glashow relations for anti-sextet heavy pentaquark magnetic moments. We study possible decays of pentaquarks into conventional hadrons. We also study the interactions between and within various pentaquark multiplets and derive their coupling constants in the symmetry limit. Possible kinematically allowed pionic decay modes are pointed out.

Heavy Pentaquarks

We construct the spin-flavor wave functions of the possible heavy pentaquarks containing an anti-charm or anti-bottom quark using various clustered quark models. Then we estimate the masses and magnetic moments of the $J^P={1\over 2}^+$ or ${3\over 2}^+$ heavy pentaquarks. We emphasize the difference in the predictions of these models. Future experimental searches at BESIII, CLEOc, BELLE, and LEP may find these interesting states.

$J^P={1/2}^-$ Pentaquarks in Jaffe and Wilczek's Diquark Model

If Jaffe and Wilczek's diquark picture for $Θ_5$ pentaquark is correct, there should also exist a $SU_F$(3) pentaquark octet and singlet with no orbital excitation between the diquark pair, hence $J^P={1/2}^-$. These states are lighter than the $Θ_5$ anti-decuplet and lie close to the orbitally excited (L=1) three-quark states in the conventional quark model. We calculate their masses and magnetic moments and discuss their possible strong decays using the chiral Lagrangian formalism. Among them two pentaquarks with nucleon quantum numbers may be narrow. Selection rules of strong decays are derived. We propose the experimental search of these nine additional $J^P={1/2}^-$ baryon states. Especially there are two additional $J^P={1/2}^-$ $Λ$ baryons around $Λ(1405)$. We also discuss the interesting possibility of interpreting $Λ(1405)$ as a pentaquark. The presence of these additional states will provide strong support of the diquark picture for the pentaquarks. If future experimental searches fail, one has to re-evaluate the relevance of this picture for the pentaquarks.

Magnetic Moments of $J^P={3/2}^+$ Pentaquarks

If the $J^P$ of $Θ_5^+$ and $Ξ_5^{--}$ pentaquarks is really found to be ${1\over 2}^+$ by future experiments, they will be accompanied by $J^P={3\over 2}^+$ partners in some models. It is reasonable to expect that these $J^P={3\over 2}^+$ states will also be discovered in the near future with the current intensive experimental and theoretical efforts. We estimate $J^P={3/2}^+$ pentaquark magnetic moments using different models.
