Understanding many-body physics in one dimension from the Lieb-Liniger model

This article presents an elementary introduction on various aspects of the prototypical integrable model the Lieb-Liniger Bose gas ranging from the cooperative to the collective features of many-body phenomena [1]. In 1963 Lieb and Liniger first solved this quantum field theory many-body problem using the Bethe's hypothesis, i.e. a particular form of wave function introduced by Bethe in solving the one-dimensional Heisenberg model in 1931. Despite the Lieb-Liniger model is arguably the simplest exactly solvable model, it exhibits rich quantum many-body physics in terms of the aspects of mathematical integrability and physical universality. Moreover, the Yang-Yang grand canonical ensemble description for the model provides us with a deep understanding of quantum statistics, thermodynamics and quantum critical phenomena at the many-body physics level. Recently, such fundamental physics of this exactly solved model has been attracting growing interest in experiments. Since 2004, there have been more than 20 experimental papers that report novel observations of different physical aspects of the Lieb-Liniger model in the lab. So far the observed results to date are seen to be in excellent agreement with results obtained using the analysis of this simplest exactly solved model. Those experimental observations reveal the unique beauty of integrability.

Critical behaviours of contact near phase transitions

A central quantity of importance for ultracold atoms is contact, which measures two-body correlations at short distances in dilute systems. It appears in universal relations among thermodynamic quantities, such as large momentum tails, energy, and dynamic structure factors, through the renowned Tan relations. However, a conceptual question remains open as to whether or not contact can signify phase transitions that are insensitive to short-range physics. Here we show that, near a continuous classical or quantum phase transition, contact exhibits a variety of critical behaviors, including scaling laws and critical exponents that are uniquely determined by the universality class of the phase transition and a constant contact per particle. We also use a prototypical exactly solvable model to demonstrate these critical behaviors in one-dimensional strongly interacting fermions. Our work establishes an intrinsic connection between the universality of dilute many-body systems and universal critical phenomena near a phase transition.

Universal local pair correlations of Lieb-Liniger bosons at quantum criticality

The one-dimensional Lieb-Liniger Bose gas is a prototypical many-body system featuring universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) physics and free fermion quantum criticality. We analytically calculate finite temperature local pair correlations for the strong coupling Bose gas at quantum criticality using the polylog function in the framework of the Yang-Yang thermodynamic equations. We show that the local pair correlation has the universal value $g^{(2)}(0)\approx 2 p/(n\varepsilon)$ in the quantum critical regime, the TLL phase and the quasi-classical region, where $p$ is the pressure per unit length rescaled by the interaction energy $\varepsilon=\frac{\hbar^2}{2m} c^2$ with interaction strength $c$ and linear density $n$. This suggests the possibility to test finite temperature local pair correlations for the TLL in the relativistic dispersion regime and to probe quantum criticality with the local correlations beyond the TLL phase. Furthermore, thermodynamic properties at high temperatures are obtained by both high temperature and virial expansion of the Yang-Yang thermodynamic equation.

Polylogs, thermodynamics and scaling functions of one-dimensional quantum many-body systems

We demonstrate that the thermodynamics of one-dimensional Lieb-Liniger bosons can be accurately calculated in analytic fashion using the polylog function in the framework of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. The approach does away with the need to numerically solve the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (Yang-Yang) equation. The expression for the equation of state allows the exploration of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid physics and quantum criticality in an archetypical quantum system. In particular, the low-temperature phase diagram is obtained, along with the scaling functions for the density and compressibility. It has been shown recently by Guan and Ho (arXiv:1010.1301) that such scaling can be used to map out the criticality of ultracold fermionic atoms in experiments. We show here how to map out quantum criticality for Lieb-Liniger bosons. More generally the polylog function formalism can be applied to a wide range of Bethe ansatz integrable quantum many-body systems which are currently of theoretical and experimental interest, such as strongly interacting multi-component fermions, spinor bosons and mixtures of bosons and fermions.

One-dimensional anyons with competing $δ$-function and derivative $δ$-function potentials

We propose an exactly solvable model of one-dimensional anyons with competing $δ$-function and derivative $δ$-function interaction potentials. The Bethe ansatz equations are derived in terms of the $N$-particle sector for the quantum anyonic field model of the generalized derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This more general anyon model exhibits richer physics than that of the recently studied one-dimensional model of $δ$-function interacting anyons. We show that the anyonic signature is inextricably related to the velocities of the colliding particles and the pairwise dynamical interaction between particles.

Magnetic ordering and quantum statistical effects in strongly repulsive Fermi-Fermi and Bose-Fermi mixtures

We investigate magnetic properties and statistical effects in 1D strongly repulsive two-component fermions and in a 1D mixture of strongly repulsive polarized fermions and bosons. Universality in the characteristics of phase transitions, magnetization and susceptibility in the presence of an external magnetic field $H$ are analyzed from the exact thermodynamic Bethe ansatz solution. We show explicitly that polarized fermions with a repulsive interaction have antiferromagnetic behavior at zero temperature. A universality class of linear field-dependent magnetization persists for weak and finite strong interaction. The system is fully polarized when the external field exceeds the critical value $H^F_c\approx \frac{8}γE_F$, where $E_F$ is the Fermi energy and $γ$ is the dimensionless interaction strength. In contrast, the mixture of polarized fermions and bosons in an external field exhibits square-root field-dependent magnetization in the vicinities of H=0 and the critical value $H=H^M_c\approx \frac{16}γE_F$. We find that a pure boson phase occurs in the absence of the external field, fully-polarized fermions and bosons coexist for $0<H<H^M_c$, and a fully-polarized fermion phase occurs for $H\ge H_c^M$. This phase diagram for the Bose-Fermi mixture is reminiscent of weakly attractive fermions with population imbalance, where the interacting fermions with opposite spins form singlet pairs.

Ferromagnetic behaviour in the strongly interacting two-component Bose gas

We investigate the low temperature behaviour of the integrable 1D two-component spinor Bose gas using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. We find that for strong coupling the characteristics of the thermodynamics at low temperatures are quantitatively affected by the spin ferromagnetic states, which are described by an effective ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. The free energy, specific heat, susceptibility and local pair correlation function are calculated for various physical regimes in terms of temperature and interaction strength. These thermodynamic properties reveal spin effects which are significantly different than those of the spinless Bose gas. The zero-field susceptibility for finite strong repulsion exceeds that of a free spin paramagnet. The critical exponents of the specific heat $c_v \sim T^{1/2}$ and the susceptibility $χ\sim T^{-2}$ are indicative of the ferromagnetic signature of the two-component spinor Bose gas. Our analytic results are consistent with general arguments by Eisenberg and Lieb for polarized spinor bosons.

Integrable models and quantum spin ladders: comparison between theory and experiment for the strong coupling ladder compounds

(abbreviated) This article considers recent advances in the investigation of the thermal and magnetic properties of integrable spin ladder models and their applicability to the physics of real compounds. The ground state properties of the integrable two-leg spin-1/2 and the mixed spin-(1/2,1) ladder models at zero temperature are analyzed by means of the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. Solving the TBA equations yields exact results for the critical fields and critical behaviour. The thermal and magnetic properties of the models are investigated in terms of the recently introduced High Temperature Expansion method, which is discussed in detail. It is shown that in the strong coupling limit the integrable spin-1/2 ladder model exhibits three quantum phases: (i) a gapped phase in the regime $H H_{c2}$, and (iii) a Luttinger liquid magnetic phase in the regime $H_{c1}<H<H_{c2}$. The critical behaviour in the vicinity of the critical points is of the Pokrovsky-Talapov type. The temperature-dependent thermal and magnetic properties are directly evaluated from the exact free energy expression and compared to known experimental results for a range of strong coupling ladder compounds. Similar analysis of the mixed spin-(1/2,1) ladder model reveals a rich phase diagram, with a 1/3 and a full saturation magnetisation plateau within the strong antiferromagnetic rung coupling regime. For weak rung coupling, the fractional magnetisation plateau is diminished and a new quantum phase transition occurs. The phase diagram can be directly deduced from the magnetisation curve obtained from the exact result derived from the HTE. The thermodynamics of the spin-orbital model with different single-ion anisotropies is also investigated.

Bethe Ansatz for 1D interacting anyons

This article gives a pedagogic derivation of the Bethe Ansatz solution for 1D interacting anyons. This includes a demonstration of the subtle role of the anyonic phases in the Bethe Ansatz arising from the anyonic commutation relations. The thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations defining the temperature dependent properties of the model are also derived, from which some groundstate properties are obtained.

Fermionization and fractional statistics in the strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose gas

We discuss recent results on the relation between the strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose gas and a gas of ideal particles obeying nonmutual generalized exclusion statistics (GES). The thermodynamic properties considered include the statistical profiles, the specific heat and local pair correlations. In the strong coupling limit $γ\to \infty$, the Tonks-Girardeau gas, the equivalence is with Fermi statistics. The deviation from Fermi statistics during boson fermionization for finite but large interaction strength $γ$ is described by the relation $α\approx 1 - 2/γ$, where $α$ is a measure of the GES. This gives a quantitative description of the fermionization process. In this sense the recent experimental measurement of local pair correlations in a 1D Bose gas of $^{87}$Rb atoms also provides a measure of the deviation of the GES parameter $α$ away from the pure Fermi statistics value $α=1$. Other thermodynamic properties, such as the distribution profiles and the specific heat, are also sensitive to the statistics. They also thus provide a way of exploring fractional statistics in the strongly interacting 1D Bose gas.

The 1D interacting anyon gas: low-energy properties and Haldane exclusion statistics

The low energy properties of the one-dimensional anyon gas with $δ$-function interaction are discussed in the context of its Bethe ansatz solution. It is found that the anyonic statistical parameter and the dynamical coupling constant induce Haldane exclusion statistics interpolating between bosons and fermions. Moreover, the anyonic parameter may trigger statistics beyond Fermi statistics for which the exclusion parameter $α$ is greater than one. The Tonks-Girardeau and the weak coupling limits are discussed in detail. The results support the universal role of $α$ in the dispersion relations.

Thermal and magnetic properties of integrable spin-1 and spin-3/2 chains with applications to real compounds

The ground state and thermodynamic properties of spin-1 and spin-3/2 chains are investigated via exactly solved su(3) and su(4) models with physically motivated chemical potential terms. The analysis involves the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz and the High Temperature Expansion (HTE) methods. For the spin-1 chain with large single-ion anisotropy, a gapped phase occurs which is significantly different from the valence-bond-solid Haldane phase. The theoretical curves for the magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat are favourably compared with experimental data for a number of spin-1 chain compounds. For the spin-3/2 chain a degenerate gapped phase exists starting at zero external magnetic field. A middle magnetization plateau can be triggered by the single-ion anisotropy term. Overall, our results lend further weight to the applicability of integrable models to the physics of low-dimensional quantum spin systems. They also highlight the utility of the exact HTE method.

Quantum phase diagram of an exactly solved mixed spin ladder

We investigate the quantum phase diagram of the exactly solved mixed spin-(1/2,1) ladder via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA). In the absence of a magnetic field the model exhibits three quantum phases associated with su(2), su(4) and su(6) symmetries. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, there is a third and full saturation magnetization plateaux within the strong antiferromagnetic rung coupling regime. Gapless and gapped phases appear in turn as the magnetic field increases. For weak rung coupling, the fractional magnetization plateau vanishs and exhibits new quantum phase transitions. However, in the ferromagnetic coupling regime, the system does not have a third saturation magnetization plat eau. The critical behaviour in the vicinity of the critical points is also derived systematically using the TBA.

Note on the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz approach to the quantum phase diagram of the strong coupling ladder compounds

We investigate the low-temperature phase diagram of the exactly solved su(4) two-leg spin ladder as a function of the rung coupling $J_{\perp}$ and magnetic field $H$ by means of the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA). In the absence of a magnetic field the model exhibits three quantum phases, while in the presence of a strong magnetic field there is no singlet ground state for ferromagnetic rung coupling. For antiferromagnetic rung coupling, there is a gapped phase in the regime H < H_{c1}, a fully polarized gapped phase for H > H_{c2} and a Luttinger liquid magnetic phase in the regime H_{c1} < H < H_{c2}. The critical behaviour derived using the TBA is consistent with the existing experimental, numerical and perturbative results for the strong coupling ladder compounds. This includes the spin excitation gap and the critical fields H_{c1} and H_{c2}, which are in excellent agreement with the experimental values for the known strong coupling ladder compounds (5IAP)_2CuBr_4 2H_2 O, Cu_2(C_5 H_{12} N_2)_2 Cl_4 and (C_5 H_{12} N)_2 CuBr_4. In addition we predict the spin gap $Δ\approx J_{\perp}-{1/2}J_{\parallel}$ for the weak coupling compounds with $J_{\perp} \sim J_{\parallel}$, such as (VO)_2 P_2 O_7, and also show that the gap opens for arbitrary $J_{\perp}/ J_{\parallel}$.

Thermodynamic properties of an integrable quantum spin ladder with boundary impurities

An integrable quantum spin ladder based on the SU(4) symmetry algebra with boundary defects is studied in the framework of boundary integrability. Five nontrivial solutions of the reflection equations lead to different boundary impurities. In each case the energy spectrum is determined using the quantum inverse scattering method. The thermodynamic properties are investigated by means of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. In particular, the susceptibility and the magnetization of the model in the vicinity of the critical points are derived along with differing magnetic properites for antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic impurity couplings at the edges. The results are applicable to the strong coupling ladder compounds, such as Cu_2(C_5 H_12 N_2)_2 Cl_4.

A supersymmetric U_{q}[osp(2|2)]-extended Hubbard model with boundary fields

A strongly correlated electron system associated with the quantum superalgebra ${U}_q[{osp}(2|2)]$ is studied in the framework of the quantum inverse scattering method. By solving the graded reflection equation, two classes of boundary-reflection $K$-matrices leading to four kinds of possible boundary interaction terms are found. Performing the algebraic Bethe ansatz, we diagonalize the two-level transfer matrices which characterize the charge and the spin degrees of freedom, respectively. The Bethe-ansatz equations, the eigenvalues of the transfer matrices and the energy spectrum are presented explicitly. We also construct two impurities coupled to the boundaries. In the thermodynamic limit, the ground state properties and impurity effects are discussed.

Integrable open boundary conditions for the Bariev model of three coupled XY spin chains

The integrable open-boundary conditions for the Bariev model of three coupled one-dimensional XY spin chains are studied in the framework of the boundary quantum inverse scattering method. Three kinds of diagonal boundary K-matrices leading to nine classes of possible choices of boundary fields are found and the corresponding integrable boundary terms are presented explicitly. The boundary Hamiltonian is solved by using the coordinate Bethe ansatz technique and the Bethe ansatz equations are derived.
