Photon production by charged particles in narrow optical fibers

A charged particle passing through or by an optical fiber induces emission of light guided by the fiber. The formula giving the spontaneous emission amplitude are given in the general case when the particle trajectory is not parallel to the fiber axis. At small angle, the photon yield grows like the inverse power of the angle and in the parallel limiting case the fiber Cherenkov effect studied by Bogdankevich and Bolotovskii is recovered. Possible application to beam diagnostics are discussed, as well as resonance effects when the particle trajectory or the fiber is bent periodically.

The relativistic hydrogen atom: a theoretical laboratory for structure functions

Thanks to the Dirac equation, the hydrogen-like atom at high $Z$ offers a precise model of relativistic bound state, allowing to test properties of unpolarized and polarized structure functions analogous to the hadronic ones, in particular: Sivers effect, sum rules for the vector, axial, tensor charges and for the magnetic moment, positivity constraints, sea contributions and fracture functions

Design of a Polarised Positron Source Based on Laser Compton Scattering

We describe a scheme for producing polarised positrons at the ILC from polarised X-rays created by Compton scattering of a few-GeV electron beam off a CO2 or YAG laser. This scheme is very energy effective using high finesse laser cavities in conjunction with an electron storage ring.

Summary of experimental studies at CERN on a positron source using crystal effects

New kind of positron sources for future linear colliders, where the converter is a tungsten crystal oriented on the <111> axis, has been studied at CERN in the WA103 experiment. In such sources the photons which create the $e^+ e^-$ pairs result from channeling radiation and coherent bremsstrahlung. In this experiment electron beams of 6 and 10 GeV were sent on different kinds of targets: a 4 mm thick crystal, a 8 mm thick crystal and a compound taraget (4 mm crystal + 4 mm amorphous disk). An amorphous tungsten target 20 mm thick was also used for comparison with the 8 mm crystal. Tracks of outgoing charged particles were detected and analyzed by a drift chamber in a magnetic field. The energy and angle spectra of the positrons were obtained for energies up to 150 MeV and angles up to 30 degrees. The measured positron distribution in momentum space (longitudinal versus transverse) is also presented, giving a full momentum space description of the source. Results on outgoing photons are also presented. A significant enhancement of both photon and positron production is clearly observed. At 10 GeV incident energy, the positron enhancement factor is 4 for the 4 mm crystal, about 2 for the 8 mm crystal. Besides, the simulation code for the crystal processes is validated by a quite good agreement between the simulated and experimental spectra, both for positrons and photons.

Analogy between free electron laser and channeling by crystal planes

The trapping of electrons in the ponderomotive potential wells, which governs a free electron laser or inverse free electron laser at high gain, is analogous to the channeling of charged particles by atomic planes of a crystal. A bent crystal is analogous to a period-tapered free electron laser. This analogy is different from the well-known one between channeling and undulator radiations.

Impact parameter profile of synchrotron radiation

The horizontal impact parameter profile of synchrotron radiation, for fixed vertical angle of the photon, is calculated. This profile is observed through an astigmatic optical system, horizontally focused on the electron trajectory and vertically focused at infinity. It is the product of the usual angular distribution of synchrotron radiation, which depends on the vertical angle $ψ$, and the profile function of a caustic staying at distance $\bcl = (γ^{-2} + ψ^2) \RB/2 $ from the orbit circle, $\RB$ being the bending radius and $γ$ the Lorentz factor. The {\it classical impact parameter} $\bcl$ is connected to the Schott term of radiation damping theory. The caustic profile function is an Airy function squared. Its fast oscillations allow a precise determination of the horizontal beam width.

Angular distribution of radiation by relativistic electrons in a thin crystal

The results of theoretical investigation of angular distributions of radiation from a relativistic electron passing through a thin crystal at a small angle to the crystal axis are presented. The electron trajectories in crystal were simulated using the binary collision model which takes into account both coherent and incoherent effects at scattering. The angular distribution of radiation was calculated as a sum of radiation from each electron. It is shown that there are nontrivial angular distributions of the emitted photons, which is connected to the superposition of the coherent scattering of electrons by atomic rows (doughnut scattering effect) and the suppression of the radiation due to the multiple scattering effect (similar to the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect in an amorphous matter). The orientation dependence of angular distribution of radiation is also analyzed.

Generation of circularly polarized photons for a linear collider polarized positron source

Various methods of obtaining longitudinally polarized positrons for future linear colliders are reviewed. Special attention is paid to the schemes using circularly polarized high-energy photons for positron production. Most effectively such photons are obtained from electrons passing through a helical undulator or colliding with a circularly polarized laser wave. Spectrum and polarization of radiation emitted during helical motion of electrons are considered in detail. A new simple presentation of known formulas is used to account for the influence of the wave intensity, of the electron-beam angular divergence, of the collimation of radiation, and of the lateral and temporal profiles of the laser bunch on the radiation properties.

Advantages of axially aligned crystals used in positron production at future linear colliders

The characteristics of the electron-photon showers initiated by 2 to 10 GeV electrons aligned along the <111>-axis of tungsten crystals are compared with those for the amorphous tungsten . In this energy range, as known, the positron yield at the optimal target thicknesses is larger in a crystal case only by several percent. However, the amount of the energy deposition in a crystal turns out to be considerably (by 20 - 50 %) lower than in an amorphous target providing the same positron yield, while the peak energy-deposition density is approximately of the same magnitude in the both cases.

Experimental Determination of the Characteristics of a Positron Source Using Channeling

Numerical simulations and `proof of principle' experiments showed clearly the interest of using crystals as photon generators dedicated to intense positron sources for linear colliders. An experimental investigation, using a 10 GeV secondary electron beam, of the SPS-CERN, impinging on an axially oriented thick tungsten crystal, has been prepared and operated between May and August 2000. After a short recall on the main features of positron sources using channeling in oriented crystals, the experimental set-up is described. A particular emphasis is put on the positron detector made of a drift chamber, partially immersed in a magnetic field. The enhancement in photon and positron production in the aligned crystal have been observed in the energy range 5 to 40 GeV, for the incident electrons, in crystals of 4 and 8 mm as in an hybrid target. The first results concerning this experiment are presented hereafter.

Considerations on the Diffraction Limitations to the Spatial Resolution of Optical Transition Radiation

The interest in using optical transition radiation (OTR) in high energy (multiGeV) beam diagnostics has motivated theoretical and experimental investigations on the limitations brought by diffraction on the attainable resolution. This paper presents calculations of the diffraction effects in an optical set-up using OTR. The OTR diffraction pattern in a telescopic system is calculated taking into account the radial polarization of OTR. The obtained diffraction pattern is compared to the patterns obtained by other authors and the effects of different parameters on the shape and on the size of the OTR diffraction pattern are studied. The major role played by the radial polarization on the shape of the diffraction pattern is outlined. An alternative method to calculate the OTR diffraction pattern is also sketched

Transverse polarization of quark pairs created in string fragmentation

Classical arguments predict that the quark and the antiquark of a pair created during string fragmentation are both transversely polarized in the direction of \hat z \times \vec q_T, where z is the direction of the pull exerted by the string on the antiquark and \vec q_T (-\vec q_T) is the transverse momentum of the quark (antiquark). The existence of this effect at the quantum-mechanical level is investigated by considering two analogous processes involving the tunnel effect in a strong field: (1) dissociation of the positronium atom (2) electron pair creation. In case (1) the positronium is taken in the 3P_0 state to simulate the vacuum quantum numbers J^PC = 0^++. Using the nonrelativistic WKB method, the final electron and positron are indeed found to be transversely polarized along \hat z \times \vec p_T. On the contrary, case (2), treated with the Dirac equation, shows no correlation between transverse polarization and transverse momentum both when the field is uniform and when it depends on z and t. The pair is nevertheless produced in a triplet spin state. The difference between these two results and their relevance to transverse spin asymmetry in inclusive reactions is discussed.

Some aspects of transversity

The specificities of transverse polarization with respect to helicity of ultrarelativistic fermions are pointed out. For massless fermions, a covariant transversity four-vector is defined, up to a kind of gauge transformation. The tranversity distribution of quarks in a nucleon is defined. Its possible connection to the magnetic or electric dipole moment of the baryon is conjectured. Consequences of the approximate chiral invariance on transverse spin asymmetries in hard processes are enumerated. The "sheared jet effect" introduced by Collins for measuring the transverse polarization of a final quark is presented.

Single Spin Asymmetry in Inclusive Pion Production, Collins Effect and the String Model (revised version)

We calculated the single spin asymmetry in the inclusive pion production in the fragmentation region of transversely polarized proton-proton collisions. We generated the asymmetry at the level of fragmentation function (Collins effect) by the Lund coloured string mechanism. We compared our results to the presently available experimental data. We obtained a qualitative agreement with the data after assuming that the transverse polarizations of the $u$ and the $d$ quarks in the proton are +1 and -1, respectively, at x_B = 1.

Single spin asymmetry in inclusive pion production, Collins effect and the string model

We calculate the single spin asymmetry in the inclusive pion production in proton-proton collisions. We generate the asymmetry at the level of fragmentation function (Collins effect) by the Lund coloured string mechanism. We compare our results with the Fermilab E704 data from polarized proton-proton collisions at 200 GeV. We show that the transversely polarized quark densities at high Bjorken x strongly differ from these predicted by the SU(6) proton wave function.

Proposals for measuring transversity distributions in deep inelastic electron scattering and a model for E-704 asymmetries

We present the principles of the measurement of the quark transversity distributions in semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering, which form the basis of HELP and one of the ELFE proposals. A string model for Collins-type asymmetry in polarized quark fragmentation function is proposed. A possible role of the Collins effect in the single spin asymmetries observed by experiment E 704 at Fermilab is suggested.
