Discovery of Log-Periodic Oscillations in Ultra-Quantum Topological Materials

Quantum oscillations are usually the manifestation of the underlying physical nature in condensed matter systems. Here we report a new type of log-periodic quantum oscillations in ultra-quantum three-dimensional topological materials. Beyond the quantum limit (QL), the log-periodic oscillations involving up to five oscillating cycles (5 peaks and 5 dips) are observed on the magnetoresistance (MR) of high quality single-crystal ZrTe5, virtually showing the clearest feature of discrete scale invariance (DSI). Further theoretical analyses show that the two-body quasi-bound states can be responsible for the DSI feature. Our work provides a new perspective on the ground state of topological materials beyond the QL.

Discrete Scale Invariance in Topological Semimetals

The discovery of Weyl and Dirac semimetals has produced a number of dramatic physical effects, including the chiral anomaly and topological Fermi arc surface states. We point out that a very different but no less dramatic physical effect is also to be found in these materials: discrete scale invariance. This invariance leads to bound state spectra for Coulomb impurities that repeat when the binding energy is changed by a fixed factor, reminiscent of fractal behavior. We show that this effect follows from the peculiar dispersion relation in Weyl and Dirac semimetals. It is observed when such a material is placed in very strong magnetic field B: there are oscillations in the magnetoresistivity somewhat similar to Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations but with a periodicity in ln B rather than 1/B. These oscillations should be present in other thermodynamic and transport properties. The oscillations have now been seen in three topological semimetals: ZrTe$_{5}$, TaAs, and Bi.

Probe of Spin Dynamics in Superconducting NbN Thin Films via Spin Pumping

The emerging field of superconductor (SC) spintronics has attracted intensive attentions recently. Many fantastic spin dependent properties in SC have been discovered, including the observation of large magnetoresistance, long spin lifetimes and the giant spin Hall effect in SC, as well as spin supercurrent in Josephson junctions, etc. Regarding the spin dynamic in SC films, few studies has been reported yet. Here, we report the investigation of the spin dynamics in an s-wave superconducting NbN film via spin pumping from an adjacent insulating ferromagnet GdN layer. A profound coherence peak of the Gilbert damping is observed slightly below the superconducting critical temperature of the NbN layer, which is consistent with recent theoretical studies. Our results further indicate that spin pumping could be a powerful tool for investigating the spin dynamics in 2D crystalline superconductors.

Manipulation and Characterization of the Valley Polarized Topological Kink States in Graphene Based Interferometers

Valley polarized topological kink states, existing broadly in the domain wall of hexagonal lattices systems, are identified in experiments, unfortunately, only very limited physical properties being given. Using an Aharanov-Bohm interferometer composed of domain walls in graphene systems, we study the periodical modulation of pure valley current in a large range by tuning the magnetic field or the Fermi level. For monolayer graphene device, there exists one topological kink state, and the oscillation of transmission coefficients have single period. The $π$ Berry phase and the linear dispersion relation of kink states can be extracted from the transmission data. For bilayer graphene device, there are two topological kink states with two oscillation periods. Our proposal provides an experimental feasible route to manipulate and characterize the valley polarized topological kink states in classical wave and electronic graphene-type crystalline systems.

Experimental Signatures of Spin Superfluid Ground State in Canted Antiferromagnet Cr2O3 via Nonlocal Spin Transport

Spin superfluid is a novel emerging quantum matter arising from the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of spin-1 bosons. We demonstrate the spin superfluid ground state in canted antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 thin film at low temperatures via nonlocal spin transport. A large enhancement of the nonlocal spin signal is observed below ~ 20 K, and it saturates from ~ 5 K down to 2 K. We show that the spins can propagate over very long distances (~ 20 micro meters) in such spin superfluid ground state and the nonlocal spin signal decreases very slowly as the spacing increases with an inverse relationship, which is consistent with theoretical prediction. Furthermore, spin superfluidity has been investigated in the canted antiferromagnetic phase of the (11-20)-oriented Cr2O3 film, where the magnetic field dependence of the associated critical temperature follows a two-thirds power law near the critical point. The experimental demonstration of the spin superfluid ground state in canted antiferromagnet will be extremely important for the fundamental physics on the BEC of spin-1 bosons and paves the way for future spin supercurrent devices, such as spin-Josephson junctions.

Magnetic Flux Control of Chiral Majorana Edge Modes in Topological Superconductor

We study the transport of chiral Majorana edge modes (CMEMs) in a hybrid quantum anomalous Hall insulator-topological superconductor (QAHI-TSC) system in which the TSC region contains a Josephson junction and a cavity. The Josephson junction undergoes a topological transition when the magnetic flux through the cavity passes through half-integer multiples of magnetic flux quantum. For the trivial phase, the CMEMs transmit along the QAHI-TSC interface as without magnetic flux. However, for the nontrivial phase, a zero-energy Majorana state appears in the cavity, leading that a CMEM can resonantly tunnel through the Majorana state to a different CMEM. These findings may provide a feasible scheme to control the transport of CMEMs by using the magnetic flux and the transport pattern can be customized by setting the size of the TSC.

Rules for Phase Shifts of Quantum Oscillations in Topological Nodal-line Semimetals

Nodal-line semimetals are topological semimetals in which band touchings form nodal lines or rings. Around a loop that encloses a nodal line, an electron can accumulate a nontrivial $π$ Berry phase, so the phase shift in the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation may give a transport signature for the nodal-line semimetals. However, different experiments have reported contradictory phase shifts, in particular, in the WHM nodal-line semimetals (W=Zr/Hf, H=Si/Ge, M=S/Se/Te). For a generic model of nodal-line semimetals, we present a systematic calculation for the SdH oscillation of resistivity under a magnetic field normal to the nodal-line plane. From the analytical result of the resistivity, we extract general rules to determine the phase shifts for arbitrary cases and apply them to ZrSiS and Cu$_3$PdN systems. Depending on the magnetic field directions, carrier types, and cross sections of the Fermi surface, the phase shift shows rich results, quite different from those for normal electrons and Weyl fermions. Our results may help exploring transport signatures of topological nodal-line semimetals and can be generalized to other topological phases of matter.

Interface induced Zeeman-protected superconductivity in ultrathin crystalline lead films

Two dimensional (2D) superconducting systems are of great importance to exploring exotic quantum physics. Recent development of fabrication techniques stimulates the studies of high quality single crystalline 2D superconductors, where intrinsic properties give rise to unprecedented physical phenomena. Here we report the observation of Zeeman-type spin-orbit interaction protected superconductivity (Zeeman-protected superconductivity) in 4 monolayer (ML) to 6 ML crystalline Pb films grown on striped incommensurate (SIC) Pb layers on Si(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Anomalous large in-plane critical field far beyond the Pauli limit is detected, which can be attributed to the Zeeman-protected superconductivity due to the in-plane inversion symmetry breaking at the interface. Our work demonstrates that in superconducting heterostructures the interface can induce Zeeman-type spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and modulate the superconductivity.

Doubled Shapiro Steps in a Topological Josephson Junction

We study the transport properties of a superconductor-quantum spin Hall insulator-superconductor (S-QSHI-S) hybrid system in the presence of a microwave radiation. Instead of adiabatic analysis or using the resistively shunted junction model, we start from the microscopic Hamiltonian and calculate the DC current directly with the help of the non-equilibrium Green's Functions method. The numerical results show that (i) the I-V curves of background current due to multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) exhibit a different structure with that in the conventional junctions, (ii) all Shapiro steps are visible and appear one by one at high frequency, while at low frequency, the steps evolve exactly as the Bessel functions and the odd steps are completely suppressed, implying a fractional Josephson effect.

The Role of Oxygen in Ionic Liquid Gating on 2D Cr2Ge2Te6: a Non-Oxide Material

Ionic liquid gating can markedly modulate the materials' carrier density so as to induce metallization, superconductivity, and quantum phase transitions. One of the main issues is whether the mechanism of ionic liquid gating is an electrostatic field effect or an electrochemical effect, especially for oxide materials. Recent observation of the suppression of the ionic liquid gate-induced metallization in the presence of oxygen for oxide materials suggests the electrochemical effect. However, in more general scenarios, the role of oxygen in ionic liquid gating effect is still unclear. Here, we perform the ionic liquid gating experiments on a non-oxide material: two-dimensional ferromagnetic Cr2Ge2Te6. Our results demonstrate that despite the large increase of the gate leakage current in the presence of oxygen, the oxygen does not affect the ionic liquid gating effect (< 5 % difference), which suggests the electrostatic field effect as the mechanism on non-oxide materials. Moreover, our results show that the ionic liquid gating is more effective on the modulation of the channel resistances compared to the back gating across the 300 nm thick SiO2.

Observation of long phase-coherence length in epitaxial La-doped CdO thin films

The search for long electron phase coherence length, which is the length that an electron can keep its quantum wave-like properties, has attracted considerable interest in the last several decades. Here, we report the long phase coherence length of ~ 3.7 micro meters in La-doped CdO thin films at 2 K. Systematical investigations of the La doping and the temperature dependences of the electron mobility and the electron phase coherence length reveal contrasting scattering mechanisms for these two physical properties. Furthermore, these results show that the oxygen vacancies could be the dominant scatters in CdO thin films that break the electron phase coherence, which would shed light on further investigation of phase coherence properties in oxide materials.

Ginzburg-Landau-type theory of non-polarized spin superconductivity

Since the concept of spin superconductor was proposed, all the related studies concentrate on spin-polarized case. Here, we generalize the study to spin-non-polarized case. The free energy of non-polarized spin superconductor is obtained, and the Ginzburg-Landau-type equations are derived by using the variational method. These Ginzburg-Landau-type equations can be reduced to the spin-polarized case when the spin direction is fixed. Moreover, the expressions of super linear and angular spin currents inside the superconductor are derived. We demonstrate that the electric field induced by super spin current is equal to the one induced by equivalent charge obtained from the second Ginzburg-Landau-type equation, which shows self-consistency of our theory. By applying these Ginzburg-Landau-type equations, the effect of electric field on the superconductor is also studied. These results will help us get a better understanding of the spin superconductor and the related topics such as Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons and spin superfluidity.

Spin-flip reflection at the normal metal-spin superconductor interface

We study spin transport through a normal metal-spin superconductor junction. A spin-flip reflection is demonstrated at the interface, where a spin-up electron incident from the normal metal can be reflected as a spin-down electron and the spin $2\times \hbar/2$ will be injected into the spin superconductor. When the (spin) voltage is smaller than the gap of the spin superconductor, the spin-flip reflection determines the transport properties of the junction. We consider both graphene-based (linear-dispersion-relation) and quadratic-dispersion-relation normal metal-spin superconductor junctions in detail. For the two-dimensional graphene-based junction, the spin-flip reflected electron can be along the specular direction (retro-direction) when the incident and reflected electron locates in the same band (different bands). A perfect spin-flip reflection can occur when the incident electron is normal to the interface, and the reflection coefficient is slightly suppressed for the oblique incident case. As a comparison, for the one-dimensional quadratic-dispersion-relation junction, the spin-flip reflection coefficient can reach 1 at certain incident energies. In addition, both the charge current and the spin current under a charge (spin) voltage are studied. The spin conductance is proportional to the spin-flip reflection coefficient when the spin voltage is less than the gap of the spin superconductor. These results will help us get a better understanding of spin transport through the normal metal-spin superconductor junction.

3D quantum Hall effect of Fermi arcs in topological semimetals

The quantum Hall effect is usually observed in 2D systems. We show that the Fermi arcs can give rise to a distinctive 3D quantum Hall effect in topological semimetals. Because of the topological constraint, the Fermi arc at a single surface has an open Fermi surface, which cannot host the quantum Hall effect. Via a "wormhole" tunneling assisted by the Weyl nodes, the Fermi arcs at opposite surfaces can form a complete Fermi loop and support the quantum Hall effect. The edge states of the Fermi arcs show a unique 3D distribution, giving an example of (d-2)-dimensional boundary states. This is distinctly different from the surface-state quantum Hall effect from a single surface of topological insulator. As the Fermi energy sweeps through the Weyl nodes, the sheet Hall conductivity evolves from the 1/B dependence to quantized plateaus at the Weyl nodes. This behavior can be realized by tuning gate voltages in a slab of topological semimetal, such as the TaAs family, Cd$_3$As$_2$, or Na$_3$Bi. This work will be instructive not only for searching transport signatures of the Fermi arcs but also for exploring novel electron gases in other topological phases of matter.

Kondo Effect with Weyl Semimetal Fermi Arcs

We investigate the Kondo effect of the Fermi arcs in a time-reversal-invariant Weyl semimetal with the variational method. To show the consequence brought out by the nontrivial spin texture, we calculate the spatial spin-spin correlation functions. The correlation functions exhibit high anisotropy. The diagonal correlation functions are dominated by the antiferromagnetic correlation while the off-diagonal part has more complicated pattern. The correlation functions obey the same symmetry as the spin texture. Tuning chemical potential changes the pattern of the correlation functions and the correlation length. The correlation functions of the Weyl semimetal Fermi arcs and that from a Dirac semimetal show discrepancy.

Universal Boundary Entropies in Conformal Field Theory: A Quantum Monte Carlo Study

Recently, entropy corrections on nonorientable manifolds such as the Klein bottle are proposed as a universal characterization of critical systems with an emergent conformal field theory (CFT). We show that entropy correction on the Klein bottle can be interpreted as a boundary effect via transforming the Klein bottle into an orientable manifold with nonlocal boundary interactions. The interpretation reveals the conceptual connection of the Klein bottle entropy with the celebrated Affleck-Ludwig entropy in boundary CFT. We propose a generic scheme to extract these universal boundary entropies from quantum Monte Carlo calculation of partition function ratios in lattice models. Our numerical results on the Affleck-Ludwig entropy and Klein bottle entropy for the $q$-state quantum Potts chains with $q=2,3$ show excellent agreement with the CFT predictions. For the quantum Potts chain with $q=4$, the Klein bottle entropy slightly deviates from the CFT prediction, which is possibly due to marginally irrelevant terms in the low-energy effective theory.

Numerical Study of Universal Conductance Fluctuation in Three-dimensional Topological Semimetals

We study the conductance fluctuation in topological semimetals. Through statistic distribution of energy levels of topological semimetals, we determine the dominant parameters of universal conductance fluctuation (UCF), i.e., the number of uncorrelated bands $k$, the level degeneracy $s$, and the symmetry parameter $β$. These parameters allow us to predict the zero-temperature intrinsic UCF of topological semimetals by the Altshuler-Lee-Stone theory. Then, we obtain numerically the conductance fluctuations for topological semimetals of quasi-1D geometry. We find that for Dirac/Weyl semimetals, the theoretical prediction coincides with the numerical results. However, a non-universal conductance fluctuation behavior is found for topological nodal line semimetals, i.e., the conductance fluctuation amplitude increases with the enlargement of SOC strength. We find that such unexpected parameter-dependent phenomena of conductance fluctuation are related to Fermi surface shape of 3D topological semimetals. These results will help us to understand the existing and future experimental results of UCF in 3D topological semimetals.

Stability of the $N = 2$ bubble states in Corbino geometry under a tilted field

We measured the activation energy gap of the N = 2 bubble states using tilted-field technique in two GaAs/AlGaAs samples with Corbino geometry, and observed monotonically decreasing energy gaps with the increasing total magnetic field. The observed tilt angle dependence is discussed based on magneto-orbital coupling and finite-size effect. We also found a bubble state at an uncommon filling factor of 4.67, with an unanticipated energy gap of up to 5.35 K and opposite in-plane field dependence.
