Field-Tunable One-Sided Higher-Order Topological Hinge States in Dirac Semimetals

Recently, higher-order topological matter and 3D quantum Hall effects have attracted great attention. The Fermi-arc mechanism of the 3D quantum Hall effect proposed in Weyl semimetals is characterized by the one-sided hinge states, which do not exist in all the previous quantum Hall systems and more importantly pose a realistic example of the higher-order topological matter. The experimental effort so far is in the Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$, where however time-reversal symmetry leads to hinge states on both sides of the top/bottom surfaces, instead of the aspired one-sided hinge states. We propose that under a tilted magnetic field, the hinge states in Cd$_3$As$_2$-like Dirac semimetals can be one-sided, highly tunable by field direction and Fermi energy, and robust against weak disorder. Furthermore, we propose a scanning tunneling Hall measurement to detect the one-sided hinge states. Our results will be insightful for exploring not only the quantum Hall effects beyond two dimensions, but also other higher-order topological insulators in the future.

Theory for magnetic-field-driven 3D metal-insulator transitions in the quantum limit

Metal-insulator transitions driven by magnetic fields have been extensively studied in 2D, but a 3D theory is still lacking. Motivated by recent experiments, we develop a scaling theory for the metal-insulator transitions in the strong-magnetic-field quantum limit of a 3D system. By using a renormalization-group calculation to treat electron-electron interactions, electron-phonon interactions, and disorder on the same footing, we obtain the critical exponent that characterizes the scaling relations of the resistivity to temperature and magnetic field. By comparing the critical exponent with those in a recent experiment [F. Tang et al., Nature (London) 569, 537 (2019)], we conclude that the insulating ground state was not only a charge-density wave driven by electron-phonon interactions but also coexisting with strong electron-electron interactions and backscattering disorder. We also propose a current-scaling experiment for further verification. Our theory will be helpful for exploring the emergent territory of 3D metal-insulator transitions under strong magnetic fields.

Coexisting of Quantum Hall and Quantum Anomalous Hall phases in Disordered $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$

In most cases, to observe quantized Hall plateaux, an external magnetic field is applied in intrinsic magnetic topological insulators $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$. Nevertheless, whether the nonzero Chern number ($C\neq 0$) phase is a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state, or a quantum Hall (QH) state, or a mixing state of both is still a puzzle, especially for the recently observed $C=2$ phase [Deng \textit{et al}., Science \textbf{367}, 895 (2020)]. In this Letter, we propose a physical picture based on the Anderson localization to understand the observed Hall plateaux in disordered $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$. Rather good consistency between the experimental and numerical results confirms that the bulk states are localized in the absence of a magnetic field and a QAH edge state emerges with $C=1$. However, under a strong magnetic field, the lowest Landau band formed with the localized bulk states, survives disorder, together with the QAH edge state, leading to a $C=2$ phase. Eventually, we present a phase diagram of a disordered $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$ which indicates more coexistence states of QAH and QH to be verified by future experiments.

Orbital order in a bosonic $p$-band triangular lattice

We present a detailed study of the Bose-Hubbard model in a $p$-band triangular lattice by focusing on the evolution of orbital order across the superfluid-Mott insulator transition. Two distinct phases are found in the superfluid regime. One of these phases adiabatically connects the weak interacting limit. This phase is characterized by the intertwining of axial $p_\pm=p_x \pm ip_y$ and in-plane $p_θ=\cosθp_x+\sinθp_y$ orbital orders, which break the time-reversal symmetry and lattice symmetries simultaneously. In addition, the calculated Bogoliubov excitation spectrum gaps the original Dirac points in the single-particle spectrum but exhibits emergent Dirac points. The other superfluid phase in close proximity to the Mott insulator with unit boson filling shows a detwined in-plane ferro-orbital order. Finally, an orbital exchange model is constructed for the Mott insulator phase. Its classical ground state has an emergent SO$(2)$ rotational symmetry in the in-plane orbital space and therefore enjoys an infinite degeneracy, which is ultimately lifted by the orbital fluctuation via the order by disorder mechanism. Our systematic analysis suggests that the in-plane ferro-orbital order in the Mott insulator phase agrees with and likely evolves from the latter superfluid phase.

Quantum Hall effect originated from helical edge states in Cd$_3$As$_2$

The recent experimental observations of the quantum Hall effect in 3D topological semimetals have attracted great attention, but there are still debates on its origin. We systematically study the dependence of the quantum Hall effect in topological semimetals on the thickness, Fermi energy, and growth direction, taking into account the contributions from the Fermi-arc surface states, confinement-induced bulk subbands, and helical side-surface edge states. In particular, we focus on the intensively studied Dirac semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ and its slabs grown along experimentally accessible directions, including [001], [110], and [112]. We reveal an ignored mechanism from the Zeeman splitting of the helical edge states, which along with Fermi-arc 3D quantum Hall effect, may give a non-monotonic dependence of the Hall conductance plateaus on the magnetic field in the most experimentally studied [112] direction slab. Our results will be insightful for exploring the quantum Hall effects beyond two dimensions.

Coulomb instabilities of 3D higher-order topological insulators

Topological insulator (TI) is an exciting discovery because of its robustness against disorder and interactions. Recently, higher-order TIs have been attracting increasing attention, because they host 1D topologically-protected hinge states in 3D or 0D corner states in 2D. A significantly critical issue is whether the higher-order TIs also survive interactions, but it is still unexplored. We study the effects of weak Coulomb interaction on a 3D second-order TI, with the help of a renormalization group calculation. We find that the 3D higher-order TIs are always unstable, suffering from two types of topological phase transitions. One is from higher-order TI to TI, the other is to normal insulator (NI). The first type is accompanied by emergent time-reversal and inversion symmetries and has a dynamical critical exponent $κ=1$. The second type does not have the emergent symmetries and has non-universal dynamical critical exponents $κ<1$. Our results may inspire more inspections on the stability of higher-order topological states of matter and related novel quantum criticalities.

Unveiling non-Abelian statistics of vortex Majorana bound states in iron-based superconductors using fermionic modes

Motivated by the recent experiments that reported the discovery of vortex Majorana bound states (vMBSs) in iron-based superconductors, we establish a portable scheme to unveil the non-Abelian statistics of vMBSs using normal fermionic modes. The unique non-Abelian statistics of vMBSs is characterized by the charge flip signal of the fermions that can be easily read out through the charge sensing measurement. In particular, the charge flip signal will be significantly suppressed for strong hybridized vMBSs or trivial vortex modes, which efficiently identifies genuine vMBSs. To eliminate the error induced by the unnecessary dynamical evolution of the fermionic modes, we further propose a correction strategy by continually reversing the energy of the fermions, reminiscent of the quantum Zeno effect. Finally, we establish a feasible protocol to perform non-Abelian braiding operations on vMBSs.

Valley-selective Floquet Chern Flat Bands in Twisted Multilayer Graphene

We show that Floquet engineering with circularly polarized light (CPL) can selectively split the valley degeneracy of a twisted multilayer graphene (TMG), and thus generate a controlled valley-polarized Floquet Chern flat band with tunable large Chern number. It offers a feasible optical way to manipulate the valley degree of freedom in moiré flat bands, and hence opens new opportunities to study the valleytronics of morié flat band systems. We thus expect that many of the valley-related properties of TMG, e.g. orbital ferromagnetism, can be switched by CPL with proper doping. We reveal a Chern number hierarchy rule for the Floquet flat bands in a generic (M+N)-layer TMG. We also illustrate that the CPL effects on TMG strongly rely on the stacking chirality, which is an unique feature of TMG. All these phenomena could be tested in the twisted double bilayer graphene systems, which is the simplest example of TMG and has already been realized in experiment.

A strange metal in a bosonic system

Fermi liquid theory forms the basis for our understanding of the majority of metals, which is manifested in the description of transport properties that the electrical resistivity goes as temperature squared in the limit of zero temperature. However, the observations of strange metal states in various quantum materials, notably high-temperature superconductors, bring this spectacularly successful theoretical framework into crisis. When electron scattering rate 1/τ hits its limit, kBT/{\hbar} where {\hbar} is the reduced Planck's constant, T represents absolute temperature and kB denotes Boltzmann's constant, Planckian dissipation occurs and lends strange metals a surprising link to black holes, gravity, and quantum information theory. Here, we show the characteristic signature of strange metallicity arising unprecedentedly in a bosonic system. Our nanopatterned YBa2Cu3O7-δ(YBCO) film arrays reveal T-linear resistance as well as B-linear magnetoresistance over an extended temperature and magnetic field range in a quantum critical region in the phase diagram. Moreover, the slope of the T-linear resistance α_cp appears bounded by α_cp {\approx} h/2e^2 [1/T]_c^onset where T_c^onset is the temperature at which Cooper pairs form, intimating a common scale-invariant transport mechanism corresponding to Planckian dissipation. In contrast to fermionic systems where the temperature and magnetic field dependent scattering rates combine in quadrature of {\hbar}/τ {\approx} {\sqrt} (((k_B T)^2+(μ_B B)^2)), both terms linearly combine in the present bosonic system, i.e. {\hbar}/τ {\approx} (k_B T+[γμ]_B B), where γ is a constant. By extending the reach of strange metal phenomenology to a bosonic system, our results suggest that there is a fundamental principle governing their transport which transcends particle statistics.

Minimal setup for non-Abelian braiding of Majorana zero modes

Braiding Majorana zero modes (MZMs) is the key procedure toward topological quantum computation. However, the complexity of the braiding manipulation hinders its experimental realization. Here we propose an experimental setup composing of MZMs and a quantum dot state which can substantially simplify the braiding protocol of MZMs. Such braiding scheme, which corresponds to a specific closed loop in the parameter space, is quite universal and can be realized in various platforms. Moreover, the braiding results can be directly measured and manifested through electric current, which provides a simple and novel way to detect the non-Abelian statistics of MZMs.

Doubled Moiré Flat Bands in Double-twisted Few Layer Graphite

We study the electronic structure of a double-twisted few layer graphite (DTFLG), which consists of three few layer graphite (FLG), i.e. ABA-stacked graphene multilayer, stacked with two twist angles. We consider two categories of DTFLG, alternately twisted case and chirally twisted one, according to the rotation direction of the two twist angles. We show that, once the middle FLG of DTFLG is not thinner than trilayer, both kinds of DTFLG can remarkably host two pairs of degenerate moiré flat bands (MFBs) at $E_f$, twice that of the magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). The doubled MFBs of DTFLG lead to doubled DOS at $E_f$, which implies much stronger correlation effects than the TBG. The degeneracy of MFBs can be lifted by a perpendicular electric field, and the isolated MFBs have nonzero valley Chern number. We also reveal the peculiar wave function patterns of the MFBs in the DTFLG. Our results establish a new family of moiré systems that have the much larger DOS at $E_f$, and thus possible much stronger correlation effects.

Chiral Interface States and Related Quantized Transport in Disordered Chern Insulators

In this Letter, we study an Anderson-localization-induced quantized transport in disordered Chern insulators (CIs). By investigating the disordered CIs with a step potential, we find that the chiral interface states emerge along the interfaces of the step potential, and the energy range for such quantized transport can be manipulated through the potential strength. Furthermore, numerical simulations on cases with a multi-step potential demonstrate that such chiral state can be spatially shifted by varying the Fermi energy, and the energy window for quantized transport is greatly enlarged. Experimentally, such chiral interface states can be realized by imposing transverse electric field, in which the energy window for quantized transport is much broader than the intrinsic band gap of the corresponding CI. These phenomena are quite universal for disordered CIs due to the direct phase transition between the CI and the normal insulator.

Realistic flat-band model based on degenerate $p$-orbitals in two-dimensional ionic materials

Though several theoretical models have been proposed to design electronic flat-bands, the definite experimental realization in two-dimensional atomic crystal is still lacking. Here we propose a novel and realistic flat-band model based on threefold degenerate $p$-orbitals in two-dimensional ionic materials. Our theoretical analysis and first-principles calculations show that the proposed flat-band can be realized in 1T layered materials of alkali-metal chalogenides and metal-carbon group compounds. Some of the former are theoretically predicted to be stable as layered materials (e.g., K$_2$S), and some of the latter have been experimentally fabricated in previous works (e.g., Gd$_2$CCl$_2$). More interestingly, the flat-band is partially filled in the heterostructure of a K$_2$S monolayer and graphene layers. The spin polarized nearly flat-band can be realized in the ferromagnetic state of a Gd$_2$CCl$_2$ monolayer, which has been fabricated in experiments. Our theoretical model together with the material predictions provide a realistic platform for the study of flat-bands and related exotic quantum phases.

Analytical solution for the surface states of antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

Recently, the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has attracted great attention. It has an out-of-plane antiferromagnetic order, which is believed to open a sizable energy gap in the surface states. This gap, however, was not always observable in the latest angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments. To address this issue, we analytically derive an effective model for the two-dimensional (2D) surface states by starting from a three-dimensional (3D) Hamiltonian for bulk MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and taking into account the spatial profile of the bulk magnetization. Our calculations suggest that the diminished surface gap may be caused by a much smaller and more localized intralayer ferromagnetic order. In addition, we calculate the spatial distribution and penetration depth of the surface states, which indicates that the surface states are mainly embedded in the first two septuple layers from the terminating surface. From our analytical results, the influence of the bulk parameters on the surface states can be found explicitly. Furthermore, we derive a $\bf{k}\cdot \bf{p}$ model for MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ thin films and show the oscillation of the Chern number between odd and even septuple layers. Our results will be helpful for the ongoing explorations of the MnBi$_x$Te$_y$ family.

Superconductor-metal quantum transition at the EuO-KTaO3 interface

Superconductivity has been one of the most fascinating quantum states of matter for over several decades. Among the superconducting materials, LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface is of particularly interest since superconductivity exists between two insulating materials, which provides it with various unique applications compared with bulk superconductors and makes it a suitable platform to study the quantum Hall effect, charge density wave, superconductivity and magnetism in one device. Therefore, a lot of efforts have been made to search new superconducting oxide interface states with higher superconducting critical temperature (TC). Recently, a superconducting state with TC ~ 2 K has been found at the interface between a ferromagnetic insulator EuO and a band insulator (111)-KTaO3. Here, we report the experimental investigation of the superconductor-metal quantum phase transition of the EuO/KTaO3 interface. Around the transition, a divergence of the dynamical critical exponent is observed, which supports the quantum Griffiths singularity in the EuO/KTaO3 interface. The quantum Griffiths singularity could be attributed to large rare superconducting regions and quenched disorders at the interface. Our results could pave the way for studying the exotic superconducting properties at the EuO/KTaO3 interface.

Theory for the Charge-Density-Wave Mechanism of 3D Quantum Hall Effect

The charge-density-wave (CDW) mechanism of the 3D quantum Hall effect has been observed recently in ZrTe$_5$ [Tang et al., Nature 569, 537 (2019)]. Different from previous cases, the CDW forms on a one-dimensional (1D) band of Landau levels, which strongly depends on the magnetic field. However, its theory is still lacking. We develop a theory for the CDW mechanism of 3D quantum Hall effect. The theory can capture the main features in the experiments. We find a magnetic field induced second-order phase transition to the CDW phase. We find that electron-phonon interactions, rather than electron-electron interactions, dominate the order parameter. We extract the electron-phonon coupling constant from the non-Ohmic I-V relation. We point out a commensurate-incommensurate CDW crossover in the experiment. More importantly, our theory explores a rare case, in which a magnetic field can induce an order-parameter phase transition in one direction but a topological phase transition in other two directions, both depend on one magnetic field.

Critical Behavior and Universal Signature of an Axion Insulator State

Recently, the search for an axion insulator state in the ferromagnet-3D topological insulator (TI) heterostructure and $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$ has attracted intensive interest. However, its detection remains difficult in experiments. We systematically investigate the disorder-induced phase transition of the axion insulator state in a 3D TI with antiparallel magnetization alignment surfaces. It is found that there exists a 2D disorder-induced phase transition which shares the same universality class with the quantum Hall plateau to plateau transition. Then, we provide a phenomenological theory which maps the random mass Dirac Hamiltonian of the axion insulator state into the Chalker-Coddington network model. Therefore, we propose to probe the axion insulator state by investigating the universal signature of such a phase transition in the ferromagnet-3D TI heterostructure and $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$. Our findings not only show a global phase diagram of the axion insulator state, but also provide a new experimental routine to probe it.

Non-Abelian statistics of Majorana zero modes in the presence of an Andreev bound state

Braiding Majorana zero modes (MZMs) is the key procedure toward topological quantum computation. We show such braiding can be well performed in a parallel semiconductor-superconductor nanowire structure. Considering the fact that the low-energy Andreev bound states (ABSs) usually mix with the MZMs in the present set-up, we further investigate the braiding properties of MZMs when an ABS is presented. Our numerical simulation suggests that ABS can be regarded as a pair of weakly coupled MZMs. The dynamical hybridization of MZMs plus the non-Abelian braiding of MZMs would induce an arbitrary rotation on the Bloch sphere of a single qubit. Remarkably, such rotation is manipulable since the rotation parameters could be individually modulated. Thus, the dynamic evolution can be eliminated and the non-Abelian braiding statistics, independent of the braiding time, retrieves.
