Baryon Acoustic Oscillation Theory and Modelling Systematics for the DESI 2024 results

This paper provides a comprehensive overview of how fitting of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) is carried out within the upcoming Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument's (DESI) 2024 results using its DR1 dataset, and the associated systematic error budget from theory and modelling of the BAO. We derive new results showing how non-linearities in the clustering of galaxies can cause potential biases in measurements of the isotropic ($α_{\mathrm{iso}}$) and anisotropic ($α_{\mathrm{ap}}$) BAO distance scales, and how these can be effectively removed with an appropriate choice of reconstruction algorithm. We then demonstrate how theory leads to a clear choice for how to model the BAO and develop, implement and validate a new model for the remaining smooth-broadband (i.e., without BAO) component of the galaxy clustering. Finally, we explore the impact of all remaining modelling choices on the BAO constraints from DESI using a suite of high-precision simulations, arriving at a set of best-practices for DESI BAO fits, and an associated theory and modelling systematic error. Overall, our results demonstrate the remarkable robustness of the BAO to all our modelling choices and motivate a combined theory and modelling systematic error contribution to the post-reconstruction DESI BAO measurements of no more than $0.1\%$ ($0.2\%$) for its isotropic (anisotropic) distance measurements. We expect the theory and best-practices laid out to here to be applicable to other BAO experiments in the era of DESI and beyond.

Nonlinear Quantum Optics at a Topological Interface Enabled by Defect Engineering

The integration of topology into photonics has generated a new design framework for constructing robust and unidirectional waveguides, which are not feasible with traditional photonic devices. Here, we overcome current barriers to the successful integration of quantum emitters such as quantum dots (QDs) into valley-Hall (VH) topological waveguides, utilising photonic defects at the topological interface to stabilise the local charge environment and inverse design for efficient topological-conventional mode conversion. By incorporating QDs within defects of VH-photonic crystals, we demonstrate the first instances of single-photon resonant fluorescence and resonant transmission spectroscopy of a quantum emitter at a topological waveguide interface. Our results bring together topological photonics with optical nonlinear effects at the single-photon level, offering a new avenue to investigate the interaction between topology and quantum nonlinear systems.

Burn-in Test and Thermal Performance Evaluation of Silicon Photomultipliers for the JUNO-TAO Experiment

This study evaluates more than 4,000 tiles made of Hamamatsu visual-sensitive silicon photomultipier (SiPM), each with dimensions of 5 $\times$ 5 cm$^2$, intended for the central detector of the Taishan Anti-neutrino Observatory (TAO), a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) aimed at measuring the reactor anti-neutrino energy spectrum with unprecedented energy resolution. All SiPM tiles underwent a room temperature burn-in test in the dark for two weeks, while cryogenic testing analyzed the thermal dependence of parameters for some sampled SiPMs. Results from these comprehensive tests provide crucial insights into the long-term performance and stability of the 10 square meters of SiPMs operating at -50°C to detect scintillation photons in the TAO detector. Despite some anomalies awaiting further inspection, all SiPMs successfully passed the burn-in test over two weeks at room temperature, which is equivalent to 6.7 years at -50°C. Results are also used to guide optimal SiPM selection, configuration, and operation, ensuring reliability and sustainability in reactor neutrino measurements. This work also provides insights for a rapid and robust quality assessment in future experiments that employ large-scale SiPMs as detection systems.

Third order fiducial predictions for Drell-Yan at the LHC

The Drell-Yan process at hadron colliders is a fundamental benchmark for the study of strong interactions and the extraction of electro-weak parameters. The outstanding precision of the LHC demands very accurate theoretical predictions with a full account of fiducial experimental cuts. In this letter we present a state-of-the-art calculation of the fiducial cross section and of differential distributions for this process at third order in the strict fixed-order expansion in the strong coupling, as well as including the all-order resummation of logarithmic corrections. Together with these results, we present a detailed study of the subtraction technique used to carry out the calculation for different sets of experimental cuts, as well as of the sensitivity of the fiducial cross section to infrared physics. We find that residual theory uncertainties are reduced to the percent level and that the robustness of the predictions can be improved by a suitable adjustment of fiducial cuts.

Beyond Imitation: A Life-long Policy Learning Framework for Path Tracking Control of Autonomous Driving

Model-free learning-based control methods have recently shown significant advantages over traditional control methods in avoiding complex vehicle characteristic estimation and parameter tuning. As a primary policy learning method, imitation learning (IL) is capable of learning control policies directly from expert demonstrations. However, the performance of IL policies is highly dependent on the data sufficiency and quality of the demonstrations. To alleviate the above problems of IL-based policies, a lifelong policy learning (LLPL) framework is proposed in this paper, which extends the IL scheme with lifelong learning (LLL). First, a novel IL-based model-free control policy learning method for path tracking is introduced. Even with imperfect demonstration, the optimal control policy can be learned directly from historical driving data. Second, by using the LLL method, the pre-trained IL policy can be safely updated and fine-tuned with incremental execution knowledge. Third, a knowledge evaluation method for policy learning is introduced to avoid learning redundant or inferior knowledge, thus ensuring the performance improvement of online policy learning. Experiments are conducted using a high-fidelity vehicle dynamic model in various scenarios to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed LLPL framework can continuously improve the policy performance with collected incremental driving data, and achieves the best accuracy and control smoothness compared to other baseline methods after evolving on a 7 km curved road. Through learning and evaluation with noisy real-life data collected in an off-road environment, the proposed LLPL framework also demonstrates its applicability in learning and evolving in real-life scenarios.

Optimal Reconstruction of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations for DESI 2024

Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) provide a robust standard ruler to measure the expansion history of the Universe through galaxy clustering. Density-field reconstruction is now a widely adopted procedure for increasing the precision and accuracy of the BAO detection. With the goal of finding the optimal reconstruction settings to be used in the DESI 2024 galaxy BAO analysis, we assess the sensitivity of the post-reconstruction BAO constraints to different choices in our analysis configuration, performing tests on blinded data from the first year of DESI observations (DR1), as well as on mocks that mimic the expected clustering and selection properties of the DESI DR1 target samples. Overall, we find that BAO constraints remain robust against multiple aspects in the reconstruction process, including the choice of smoothing scale, treatment of redshift-space distortions, fiber assignment incompleteness, and parameterizations of the BAO model. We also present a series of tests that DESI followed in order to assess the maturity of the end-to-end galaxy BAO pipeline before the unblinding of the large-scale structure catalogs.

HOD-Dependent Systematics in Emission Line Galaxies for the DESI 2024 BAO analysis

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will provide precise measurements of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) to constrain the expansion history of the Universe and set stringent constraints on dark energy. Therefore, precise control of the global error budget due to various systematic effects is required for the DESI 2024 BAO analysis. In this work, we focus on the robustness of the BAO analysis against the Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) modeling for the Emission Line Galaxy (ELG) tracer. Based on a common dark matter simulation, our analysis relies on HOD mocks tuned to early DESI data, namely the One-Percent survey data. To build the mocks, we use several HOD models for the ELG tracer as well as extensions to the baseline HOD models. Among these extensions, we consider distinct recipes for galactic conformity and assembly bias. We perform two independent analyses in the Fourier space and in the configuration space. We recover the BAO signal from two-point measurements after performing reconstruction on our mocks. Additionally, we also apply the control variates technique to reduce sample variance noise. Our BAO analysis can recover the isotropic BAO parameter $α_\text{iso}$ within 0.1\% and the Alcock Paczynski parameter $α_\text{AP}$ within 0.3\%. Overall, we find that our systematic error due to the HOD dependence is below 0.17\%, with the Fourier space analysis being more robust against the HOD systematics. We conclude that our analysis pipeline is robust enough against the HOD systematics for the ELG tracer in the DESI 2024 BAO analysis.

DESI 2024 III: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations from Galaxies and Quasars

We present the DESI 2024 galaxy and quasar baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) measurements using over 5.7 million unique galaxy and quasar redshifts in the range 0.1<z<2.1. Divided by tracer type, we utilize 300,017 galaxies from the magnitude-limited Bright Galaxy Survey with 0.1<z<0.4, 2,138,600 Luminous Red Galaxies with 0.4<z<1.1, 2,432,022 Emission Line Galaxies with 0.8<z<1.6, and 856,652 quasars with 0.8<z<2.1, over a ~7,500 square degree footprint. The analysis was blinded at the catalog-level to avoid confirmation bias. All fiducial choices of the BAO fitting and reconstruction methodology, as well as the size of the systematic errors, were determined on the basis of the tests with mock catalogs and the blinded data catalogs. We present several improvements to the BAO analysis pipeline, including enhancing the BAO fitting and reconstruction methods in a more physically-motivated direction, and also present results using combinations of tracers. We present a re-analysis of SDSS BOSS and eBOSS results applying the improved DESI methodology and find scatter consistent with the level of the quoted SDSS theoretical systematic uncertainties. With the total effective survey volume of ~ 18 Gpc$^3$, the combined precision of the BAO measurements across the six different redshift bins is ~0.52%, marking a 1.2-fold improvement over the previous state-of-the-art results using only first-year data. We detect the BAO in all of these six redshift bins. The highest significance of BAO detection is $9.1σ$ at the effective redshift of 0.93, with a constraint of 0.86% placed on the BAO scale. We find our measurements are systematically larger than the prediction of Planck-2018 LCDM model at z<0.8. We translate the results into transverse comoving distance and radial Hubble distance measurements, which are used to constrain cosmological models in our companion paper [abridged].

Different behaviors of wavelet results for type-B and type-C QPOs of MAXI J1535-571 based on NICER data

Wavelet analysis, in addition to power density spectra, is another method to study the quasi-periodic signals in the light curves, but has been rarely used in black hole X-ray transients. We performed wavelet analysis of X-ray timing features and quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) based on NICER observations of the black hole candidate MAXI J1535-571 in this paper. Separating the light curves by the confidence level of wavelet results, we find significant differences exist in the PDS, hardness ratio and mean count between light curve segments above and below the confidence level. The S-factor, which is defined as the ratio of the effective oscillation time and the total time, demonstrates distinct values between type-C and type-B QPOs. Based on our results, the S-factor for type-B QPO is very close or equal to 0, no matter the confidence level is set as 95\% or 68\%, while the S-factor of type-C QPO is significantly higher, especially in the 68\% confidence level case. We discuss the implications of the wavelet results on resolving type-B and type-C QPOs in black hole X-ray binaries.

Precise predictions for boosted Higgs production

Inclusive Higgs boson production at large transverse momentum is induced by different production channels. We focus on the leading production through gluon fusion, and perform a consistent combination of the state of the art calculations obtained in the infinite-top-mass effective theory at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and in the full Standard Model (SM) at next-to-leading order (NLO). We thus present approximate QCD predictions for this process at NNLO, and a study of the corresponding perturbative uncertainties. This calculation is then compared with those obtained with commonly used event generators, and we observe that the description of the considered kinematic regime provided by these tools is in good agreement with state of the art calculations. Finally, we present accurate predictions for other production channels such as vector boson fusion, and associated production with a gauge boson, and with a $t\bar{t}$ pair. We find that, at large transverse momentum, the contribution of other production modes is substantial, and therefore must be included for a precise theory prediction of this observable.

Measurement of the Isolated Nuclear Two-Photon Decay in $^{72}\mathrm{Ge}$

The nuclear two-photon or double-gamma ($2γ$) decay is a second-order electromagnetic process whereby a nucleus in an excited state emits two gamma rays simultaneously. To be able to directly measure the $2γ$ decay rate in the low-energy regime below the electron-positron pair-creation threshold, we combined the isochronous mode of a storage ring with Schottky resonant cavities. The newly developed technique can be applied to isomers with excitation energies down to $\sim100$\,keV and half-lives as short as $\sim10$\,ms. The half-life for the $2γ$ decay of the first-excited $0^+$ state in bare $^{72}\mathrm{Ge}$ ions was determined to be $23.9\left(6\right)$\,ms, which strongly deviates from expectations.

TMD gluon density in nuclei versus experimental data on heavy flavor production at LHC

Analytical expressions for the Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD, or unintegrated) gluon and sea quark densities in nuclei are derived at leading order of QCD running coupling. The calculations are performed in the framework of the rescaling model and Kimber-Martin-Ryskin (KMR) prescription, where the Bessel-inspired behavior of parton densities at small Bjorken $x$ values, obtained in the case of flat initial conditions in the double scaling QCD approximation, is applied. The derived expressions are used to evaluate the inclusive heavy flavor production in proton-lead collisions at the LHC. We find a good agreement of our results with latest experimental data collected by the CMS and ALICE Collaborations at $\sqrt s = 5.02$ GeV.

Towards higher-order calculations of quarkonia production with $k_T$-factorization: $P$-wave charmonia

Inclusive $P$-wave charmonia production in hadronic collisions at high energies is discussed in the framework of non-relativistic QCD and $k_T$-factorization formalism. We present two consistent approches to merge the usual leading order $k_T$-factorization calculations with tree-level next-to-leading order off-shell amplitudes. Using these prescriptions, we extracted long-distance matrix elements for $χ_c$ mesons from a combined fit to available Tevatron and LHC data. In contrast to previous (leading order) calculations, our fits do not contradict equal color singlet wave functions of $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ states. The extracted values of long-distance matrix elements are employed to analyse the $χ_c$ polarization data reported recently by the CMS Collaboration. Our predictions are in a reasonably good agreement with the Tevatron and LHC measurements within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties.

STCF Conceptual Design Report: Volume 1 -- Physics & Detector

The Super $τ$-Charm facility (STCF) is an electron-positron collider proposed by the Chinese particle physics community. It is designed to operate in a center-of-mass energy range from 2 to 7 GeV with a peak luminosity of $0.5\times 10^{35}{\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$ or higher. The STCF will produce a data sample about a factor of 100 larger than that by the present $τ$-Charm factory -- the BEPCII, providing a unique platform for exploring the asymmetry of matter-antimatter (charge-parity violation), in-depth studies of the internal structure of hadrons and the nature of non-perturbative strong interactions, as well as searching for exotic hadrons and physics beyond the Standard Model. The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This document presents the physics opportunities at the STCF, describes conceptual designs of the STCF detector system, and discusses future plans for detector R\&D and physics case studies.

Precise lifetime measurement of $^4_Λ$H hypernucleus using in-flight $^4$He$(K^-, π^0)^4_Λ$H reaction

We present a new measurement of the $^4_Λ$H hypernuclear lifetime using in-flight $K^-$ + $^4$He $\rightarrow$ $^4_Λ$H + $π^0$ reaction at the J-PARC hadron facility. We demonstrate, for the first time, the effective selection of the hypernuclear bound state using only the $γ$-ray energy decayed from $π^0$. This opens the possibility for a systematic study of isospin partner hypernuclei through comparison with data from ($K^-$, $π^-$) reaction. As the first application of this method, our result for the $^4_Λ$H lifetime, $τ(^4_Λ\mathrm{H}) = 206 \pm 8 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 12 (\mathrm{syst.})\ \mathrm{ps}$, is one of the most precise measurements to date. We are also preparing to measure the lifetime of the hypertriton ($^3_Λ$H) using the same setup in the near future.
