Azimuthal anisotropy measurements of strange and multistrange hadrons in U+U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 193$ GeV at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

We present systematic measurements of azimuthal anisotropy for strange and multistrange hadrons ($K^{0}_{s}$, $Λ$, $Ξ$, and $Ω$) and $ϕ$ mesons at midrapidity ($|y| <$ 1.0) in collisions of U + U nuclei at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 193$ GeV, recorded by the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}$) dependence of flow coefficients ($v_{2}$, $v_{3}$, and $v_{4}$) is presented for minimum bias collisions and three different centrality intervals. Number of constituent quark scaling of the measured flow coefficients in U + U collisions is discussed. We also present the ratio of $v_{n}$ scaled by the participant eccentricity ($\varepsilon_{n}\left\lbrace 2 \right\rbrace$) to explore system size dependence and collectivity in U + U collisions. The magnitude of $v_{2}/\varepsilon_{2}$ is found to be smaller in U + U collisions than that in central Au + Au collisions contradicting naive eccentricity scaling. Furthermore, the ratios between various flow harmonics ($v_{3}/v_{2}^{3/2}$, $v_{4}/v_{2}^{4/2}$) are studied and compared with hydrodynamic and transport model calculations.

Fully Differential Higgs Boson Production to Third Order in QCD

We present fully differential predictions for the production cross section of a Higgs boson via the gluon fusion mechanism at next-to-next-to-next-to leading order (N$^3$LO) in QCD perturbation theory. To perform our calculation we apply the Projection-to-Born method for the first time to the calculation of the non-factorising production of a colorless final state at the LHC at N$^3$LO. We predict differential distributions for the two photon final state produced by the decay of the Higgs boson and apply fiducial cuts on the photon rapidities and momenta. The N$^3$LO corrections to these differential distributions have complex features and are in part larger than the inclusive N$^3$LO corrections to the production cross section. Overall, we observe that the inclusion of the N$^3$LO QCD corrections significantly reduces the perturbative uncertainties and leads to a stabilisation of the perturbative expansion.

Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for inclusive jet and dijet production in polarized proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV

We report high-precision measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, $A_{LL}$, for midrapidity inclusive jet and dijet production in polarized $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=200\,\mathrm{GeV}$. The new inclusive jet data are sensitive to the gluon helicity distribution, $Δg(x,Q^2)$, for gluon momentum fractions in the range from $x \simeq 0.05$ to $x \simeq 0.5$, while the new dijet data provide further constraints on the $x$ dependence of $Δg(x,Q^2)$. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements at $\sqrt{s}=200\,\mathrm{GeV}$ and with recent theoretical evaluations of prior world data. Our new results have better precision and thus strengthen the evidence that $Δg(x,Q^2)$ is positive for $x > 0.05$.

Ewald summation for ferroelectric perovskites with charges and dipoles

Ewald summation is an important technique used to deal with long-range Coulomb interaction. While it is widely used in simulations of molecules and solid state materials, many important results are dispersed in literature and their implementations are often buried deep in large software packages. Since reliable and systematic calculation of Coulomb interaction is critical for the investigation of perovskites, here we start from the fundamentals of Ewald summation and derive clear expressions for long-range charge-charge, dipole-dipole, and charge-dipole interactions, which can be readily used for numerical computations. We also provide the interaction matrix for efficient Monte Carlo simulations involving charges and dipoles, implementing them in a Python software package. A new type of interaction matrix, which accounts for the electrostatic energy change when ions are displaced, is also derived and implemented. These results are the foundations for the investigation of ferroelectric perovskites.

LIGOs Quantum Response to Squeezed States

Gravitational Wave interferometers achieve their profound sensitivity by combining a Michelson interferometer with optical cavities, suspended masses, and now, squeezed quantum states of light. These states modify the measurement process of the LIGO, VIRGO and GEO600 interferometers to reduce the quantum noise that masks astrophysical signals; thus, improvements to squeezing are essential to further expand our gravitational view of the universe. Further reducing quantum noise will require both lowering decoherence from losses as well more sophisticated manipulations to counter the quantum back-action from radiation pressure. Both tasks require fully understanding the physical interactions between squeezed light and the many components of km-scale interferometers. To this end, data from both LIGO observatories in observing run three are expressed using frequency-dependent metrics to analyze each detector's quantum response to squeezed states. The response metrics are derived and used to concisely describe physical mechanisms behind squeezing's simultaneous interaction with transverse-mode selective optical cavities and the quantum radiation pressure noise of suspended mirrors. These metrics and related analysis are broadly applicable for cavity-enhanced optomechanics experiments that incorporate external squeezing, and -- for the first time -- give physical descriptions of every feature so far observed in the quantum noise of the LIGO detectors.

AtomECS: Simulate laser cooling and magneto-optical traps

AtomECS is a software package that efficiently simulates the motion of neutral atoms experiencing forces exerted by laser radiation, such as in magneto-optical traps and Zeeman slowers. The program is implemented using the Entity-Component-System pattern, which gives excellent performance, flexibility and scalability to parallel computing resources. The simulation package has been verified by comparison to analytic results, and extensively unit tested.

Measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries of $π^0$ and electromagnetic jets at forward rapidity in 200 and 500 GeV transversely polarized proton-proton collisions

The STAR Collaboration reports measurements of the transverse single-spin asymmetry (TSSA) of inclusive $π^0$ at center-of-mass energies ($\sqrt s$) of 200 GeV and 500 GeV in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions in the pseudo-rapidity region 2.7 to 4.0. The results at the two different energies show a continuous increase of the TSSA with Feynman-$x$, and, when compared to previous measurements, no dependence on $\sqrt s$ from 19.4 GeV to 500 GeV is found. To investigate the underlying physics leading to this large TSSA, different topologies have been studied. $π^0$ with no nearby particles tend to have a higher TSSA than inclusive $π^0$. The TSSA for inclusive electromagnetic jets, sensitive to the Sivers effect in the initial state, is substantially smaller, but shows the same behavior as the inclusive $π^0$ asymmetry as a function of Feynman-$x$. To investigate final-state effects, the Collins asymmetry of $π^0$ inside electromagnetic jets has been measured. The Collins asymmetry is analyzed for its dependence on the $π^0$ momentum transverse to the jet thrust axis and its dependence on the fraction of jet energy carried by the $π^0$. The asymmetry was found to be small in each case for both center-of-mass energies. All the measurements are compared to QCD-based theoretical calculations for transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions. Some discrepancies are found, which indicates new mechanisms might be involved.

Global polarization of $Ξ$ and $Ω$ hyperons in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV

Global polarization of $Ξ$ and $Ω$ hyperons has been measured for the first time in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV. The measurements of the $Ξ^-$ and $\barΞ^+$ hyperon polarization have been performed by two independent methods, via analysis of the angular distribution of the daughter particles in the parity violating weak decay $Ξ\rightarrowΛ+π$, as well as by measuring the polarization of the daughter $Λ$-hyperon, polarized via polarization transfer from its parent. The polarization, obtained by combining the results from the two methods and averaged over $Ξ^-$ and $\barΞ^+$, is measured to be $\langle P_Ξ\rangle = 0.47\pm0.10~({\rm stat.})\pm0.23~({\rm syst.})\,\%$ for the collision centrality 20\%-80\%. The $\langle P_Ξ\rangle$ is found to be slightly larger than the inclusive $Λ$ polarization and in reasonable agreement with a multi-phase transport model (AMPT). The $\langle P_Ξ\rangle$ is found to follow the centrality dependence of the vorticity predicted in the model, increasing toward more peripheral collisions. The global polarization of $Ω$, $\langle P_Ω\rangle = 1.11\pm0.87~({\rm stat.})\pm1.97~({\rm syst.})\,\%$ was obtained by measuring the polarization of daughter $Λ$ in the decay $Ω\rightarrow Λ+ K$, assuming the polarization transfer factor $C_{ΩΛ}=1$.

Studying magnetic fields of ultraluminous X-ray pulsars using different accretion torques

The magnetic field of ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) pulsars is the key parameter to understand the nature and accretion physics. However, the typical magnetic field values in these ULX pulsars are still under debate. We used six different torque models to study the magnetic fields of ULX pulsars, to see how derived magnetic fields change with different models, and to determine which models are more suitable for ULX pulsars. We took the currently available period, period derivative, and flux data of 7 confirmed ULX pulsars, M82 X-2, ULX NGC 7793 P13, ULX NGC 5907, NGC 300 ULX1, NGC 1313 X-2, M51 ULX-7, Swift J0243.6+6124, plus one potential ULX pulsars, SMC X-3. The magnetic fields of these ULX pulsars were constrained from two physical conditions: the spin-up process and near equilibrium. We checked possible dependence of the magnetic field estimations on the different torque models. The calculations suggest the accretion torque models by Ghosh & Lamb [1], Wang [2], Kluzniak & Rappaport [3] and Campbell [4] are more likely to support magnetar models for ULX pulsars, while Lovelace, Romanova & Bisnovatyi-Kogan [5]'s model generally predicts the magnetic field in normal neutron stars. Implications of our results combined with other independent methods are also discussed, which will help us to understand the nature and rotational behavior of these ULX pulsars.

SMAPGAN: Generative Adversarial Network Based Semi-Supervised Styled Map Tiles Generating Method

Traditional online map tiles, widely used on the Internet such as Google Map and Baidu Map, are rendered from vector data. Timely updating online map tiles from vector data, of which the generating is time-consuming, is a difficult mission. It is a shortcut to generate map tiles in time from remote sensing images, which can be acquired timely without vector data. However, this mission used to be challenging or even impossible. Inspired by image-to-image translation (img2img) techniques based on generative adversarial networks (GAN), we proposed a semi-supervised Generation of styled map Tiles based on Generative Adversarial Network (SMAPGAN) model to generate styled map tiles directly from remote sensing images. In this model, we designed a semi-supervised learning strategy to pre-train SMAPGAN on rich unpaired samples and fine-tune it on limited paired samples in reality. We also designed image gradient L1 loss and image gradient structure loss to generate a styled map tile with global topological relationships and detailed edge curves of objects, which are important in cartography. Moreover, we proposed edge structural similarity index (ESSI) as a metric to evaluate the quality of topological consistency between generated map tiles and ground truths. Experimental results present that SMAPGAN outperforms state-of-the-art (SOTA) works according to mean squared error, structural similarity index, and ESSI. Also, SMAPGAN won more approval than SOTA in the human perceptual test on the visual realism of cartography. Our work shows that SMAPGAN is potentially a new paradigm to produce styled map tiles. Our implementation of the SMAPGAN is available at https://github.com/imcsq/SMAPGAN.

Fcc -> bcc phase transition kinetics in an immiscible binary system: atomistic evidence of the twinning mechanism of transformation

Extensive atomistic simulations based on the quasiparticle (QA) approach are performed to determine the momentous aspects of the displacive fcc/bcc phase transformation in a binary system. We demonstrate that the QA is able to predict the major structural characteristics of fcc/bcc phase transformations, including the growth of a bcc nuclei in a fcc matrix, and eventually the formation of an internally twinned structure consisting in two variants with Kurdjumov-Sachs orientation relationship. At atomic level, we determine the defect structure of twinning boundaries and fcc/bcc interfaces, and identify the main mechanism for their propagation. In details, it is shown that twin boundaries are propagated by the propagation of screw dislocations in fcc along the <-1-11>_α direction, while the propagation of fcc screw dislocations along coherent terrace edges is the pivotal vector of the fcc/bcc transformation. The simulation results are compared with our TEM and HRTEM observations of Fe-rich bcc twinned particle embedded in the fcc Cu-rich matrix in the Cu-Fe-Co system.

A search for cloud cores affected by shocked carbon chain chemistry in L1251

We searched for shocked carbon chain chemistry (SCCC) sources with C$_3$S abundances surpassing those of HC$_5$N towards the dark cloud L1251, using the Effelsberg telescope at K-band (18 -- 26\,GHz). L1251-1 and L1251-3 are identified as the most promising SCCC sources. The two sources harbor young stellar objects. We conducted mapping observations towards L1251-A, the western tail of L1251, at $λ$ $\sim$3\,mm with the PMO 13.7 m and the NRO 45 m telescopes in lines of C$_2$H, N$_2$H$^+$, CS, HCO$^+$, SO, HC$_3$N and C$^{18}$O as well as in CO 3--2 using the JCMT. The spectral data were combined with archival data including Spitzer and Herschel continuum maps for further analysis. Filamentary sub-structures labeled as F1 to F6 were extracted in L1251, with F1 being associated with L1251-A hosting L1251-1. The peak positions of dense gas traced by HCO$^+$ are misaligned relative to those of the dust clumps. Episodic outflows are common in this region. The twisted morphology of F1 and velocity distribution along L1251-A may originate from stellar feedback. SCCC in L1251-1 may have been caused by outflow activities originated from the infrared source IRS1. The signposts of ongoing SCCC and the broadened line widths of C$_3$S and C$_4$H in L1251-1 as well as the distribution of HC$_3$N are also related to outflow activities in this region. L1251-1 (IRS1) together with the previously identified SCCC source IRS3 demonstrate that L1251-A is an excellent region to study shocked carbon chain chemistry.

Flow and interferometry results from Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{\textit{s}_{NN}}$ = 4.5 GeV

The Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) was extended to energies below $\sqrt{\textit{s}_{NN}}$ = 7.7 GeV in 2015 by successful implementation of the fixed-target mode of operation in the STAR (Solenoidal Track At RHIC) experiment. In the fixed-target mode, ions circulate in one ring of the collider and interact with a stationary target at the entrance of the STAR Time Projection Chamber. The first results for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{\textit{s}_{NN}}$ = 4.5 GeV are presented, including directed and elliptic flow of identified hadrons, and radii from pion femtoscopy. The proton flow and pion femtoscopy results agree quantitatively with earlier measurements by Alternating Gradient Synchrotron experiments at similar energies. This validates running the STAR experiment in the fixed-target configuration. Pion directed and elliptic flow are presented for the first time at this beam energy. Pion and proton elliptic flow show behavior which hints at constituent quark scaling, but large error bars preclude reliable conclusions. The ongoing second phase of BES (BES-II) will provide fixed-target data sets with 100 times more events at each of several energies down to $\sqrt{\textit{s}_{NN}}$ = 3.0 GeV.

Comparison of transverse single-spin asymmetries for forward $π^{0}$ production in polarized $pp$, $p\rm{Al}$ and $p\rm{Au}$ collisions at nucleon pair c.m. energy $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}= 200$ GeV

The STAR Collaboration reports a measurement of the transverse single-spin asymmetries, $A_{N}$, for neutral pions produced in polarized proton collisions with protons ($pp$), with aluminum nuclei ($p\rm{Al}$) and with gold nuclei ($p\rm{Au}$) at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. Neutral pions are observed in the forward direction relative to the transversely polarized proton beam, in the pseudo-rapidity region $2.7<η<3.8$. Results are presented for $π^0$s observed in the STAR FMS electromagnetic calorimeter in narrow Feynman x ($x_F$) and transverse momentum ($p_T$) bins, spanning the range $0.17 2.5$ GeV/$c$. It is further observed that the value of $A_N$ is significantly larger for events with a large-$p_T$ isolated $π^0$ than for events with a non-isolated $π^0$ accompanied by additional jet-like fragments. The nuclear dependence $r(A)$ is similar for isolated and non-isolated $π^0$ events.

Reducing Scattered Light in LIGO's Third Observing Run

Noise due to scattered light has been a frequent disturbance in the Advanced LIGO gravitational wave detectors, hindering the detection of gravitational waves. The non stationary scatter noise caused by low frequency motion can be recognized as arches in the time-frequency plane of the gravitational wave channel. In this paper, we characterize the scattering noise for LIGO's third observing run O3 from April, 2019 to March, 2020. We find at least two different populations of scattering noise and we investigate the multiple origins of one of them as well as its mitigation. We find that relative motion between two specific surfaces is strongly correlated with the presence of scattered light and we implement a technique to reduce this motion. We also present an algorithm using a witness channel to identify the times this noise can be present in the detector.

Measurement of inclusive charged-particle jet production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV

The STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider reports the first measurement of inclusive jet production in peripheral and central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-k$_{T}$ algorithm using charged tracks with pseudorapidity $|η|<1.0$ and transverse momentum $0.2<p_{T,jet}^{ch}<30$ GeV/$c$, with jet resolution parameter $R$=0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. The large background yield uncorrelated with the jet signal is observed to be dominated by statistical phase space, consistent with a previous coincidence measurement. This background is suppressed by requiring a high-transverse-momentum (high-$p_T$) leading hadron in accepted jet candidates. The bias imposed by this requirement is assessed, and the $p_T$ region in which the bias is small is identified. Inclusive charged-particle jet distributions are reported in peripheral and central Au+Au collisions for $5<p_{T,jet}^{ch}<25$ GeV/$c$ and $5<p_{T,jet}^{ch}<30$ GeV/$c$, respectively. The charged-particle jet inclusive yield is suppressed for central Au+Au collisions, compared to both the peripheral Au+Au yield from this measurement and to the $pp$ yield calculated using the PYTHIA event generator. The magnitude of the suppression is consistent with that of inclusive hadron production at high $p_T$, and that of semi-inclusive recoil jet yield when expressed in terms of energy loss due to medium-induced energy transport. Comparison of inclusive charged-particle jet yields for different values of $R$ exhibits no significant evidence for medium-induced broadening of the transverse jet profile for $R<0.4$ in central Au+Au collisions. The measured distributions are consistent with theoretical model calculations that incorporate jet quenching.

Characterization of a beam-tagging hodoscope for hadrontherapy monitoring

A beam tagging hodoscope prototype made of squared 1 mm$^2$ fibers arranged in two perpendicular planes and coupled to multi-anode photomultipliers has been studied using 65 MeV proton as well as 95 MeV/u $^{12}$C beams at various intensities. This hodoscope successfully provided 2D images of proton beams with a detection efficiency larger than 98 % with logical OR condition between the two fiber planes. The detection efficiency with a coincidence between the two planes is close to 75 % for beam intensities up to $\sim1$ MHz. Moreover, the timing resolution is around 1.8 ns FWHM. Overall, the performances show that such a technology is viable for beam monitoring during hadrontherapy.

Measurement of Groomed Jet Substructure Observables in \pp Collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV with STAR

In this letter, measurements of the shared momentum fraction ($z_{\rm{g}}$) and the groomed jet radius ($R_{\rm{g}}$), as defined in the SoftDrop algorihm, are reported in \pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV collected by the STAR experiment. These substructure observables are differentially measured for jets of varying resolution parameters from $R = 0.2 - 0.6$ in the transverse momentum range $15 < p_{\rm{T, jet}} < 60$ GeV$/c$. These studies show that, in the $p_{\rm{T, jet}}$ range accessible at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV and with increasing jet resolution parameter and jet transverse momentum, the $z_{\rm{g}}$ distribution asymptotically converges to the DGLAP splitting kernel for a quark radiating a gluon. The groomed jet radius measurements reflect a momentum-dependent narrowing of the jet structure for jets of a given resolution parameter, i.e., the larger the $p_{\rm{T, jet}}$, the narrower the first splitting. For the first time, these fully corrected measurements are compared to Monte Carlo generators with leading order QCD matrix elements and leading log in the parton shower, and to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations at next-to-leading-log accuracy. We observe that PYTHIA 6 with parameters tuned to reproduce RHIC measurements is able to quantitatively describe data, whereas PYTHIA 8 and HERWIG 7, tuned to reproduce LHC data, are unable to provide a simultaneous description of both $z_{\rm{g}}$ and $R_{\rm{g}}$, resulting in opportunities for fine parameter tuning of these models for \pp collisions at RHIC energies. We also find that the theoretical calculations without non-perturbative corrections are able to qualitatively describe the trend in data for jets of large resolution parameters at high $p_{\rm{T, jet}}$, but fail at small jet resolution parameters and low jet transverse momenta.
