Phase Diagram of Ferroelastic Systems in the Presence of Disorder: Analytical Model and Experimental Verification

There is little consensus on the nature of the glass state and its relationship to other strain states in ferroelastic materials which show the shape memory effect and superelasticity. We provide a thermodynamic interpretation of the known strain states, including precursory tweed and strain glass, by mapping the problem onto a spin model and analytically obtaining the phase diagram using real-space renormalization group methods. We further predict a spontaneous transition from the glass state to the ordered martensite phase. We verify this prediction by mapping out the experimental phase diagram for the ternary ferroelastic alloy Ti$_{50}$(Pd$_{50-x}$Cr$_x$) and demonstrate the emergence of the spontaneous transition. Our work thus provides a consistent framework to understand the various experimental and theoretical studies on the glassy behavior associated with ferroelastic materials.

Higgs boson muon collider factory: h0, A, H studies

With the recent hints of the Higgs boson from the LHC and a mass near 125 GeV/c we re-propose to study and build a muon collider Higgs factory to study the Higgs in the S channel [1]. This was first proposed in 1992 by the first author. It is essential to study the Higgs boson for clues to new physics. The formation of the DOE MAP program, recent advances in 6D μ cooling methods, simulation, and targeting make this a feasible project to initiate at this time. This collider would fit into the FNAL site.

Interim Design Report

The International Design Study for the Neutrino Factory (the IDS-NF) was established by the community at the ninth "International Workshop on Neutrino Factories, super-beams, and beta- beams" which was held in Okayama in August 2007. The IDS-NF mandate is to deliver the Reference Design Report (RDR) for the facility on the timescale of 2012/13. In addition, the mandate for the study [3] requires an Interim Design Report to be delivered midway through the project as a step on the way to the RDR. This document, the IDR, has two functions: it marks the point in the IDS-NF at which the emphasis turns to the engineering studies required to deliver the RDR and it documents baseline concepts for the accelerator complex, the neutrino detectors, and the instrumentation systems. The IDS-NF is, in essence, a site-independent study. Example sites, CERN, FNAL, and RAL, have been identified to allow site-specific issues to be addressed in the cost analysis that will be presented in the RDR. The choice of example sites should not be interpreted as implying a preferred choice of site for the facility.

Simulation Prediction and Experiment Setup of Vacuum Laser Acceleration at Brookhaven National Lab-Accelerator Test Facility

This paper presents the pre-experiment plan and prediction of the first stage of Vacuum Laser Acceleration (VLA) collaborating by UCLA, Fudan University and ATF-BNL. This first stage experiment is a Proof-of-Principle to support our previously posted novel VLA theory. Simulations show that based on ATF's current experimental conditions, the electron beam with initial energy of 15MeV can get net energy gain from intense CO2 laser beam. The difference of electron beam energy spread is observable by ATF beam line diagnostics system. Further this energy spread expansion effect increases along with the laser intensity increasing. The proposal has been approved by ATF committee and experiment will be the next project.
