Pitfalls in the analysis of low-temperature thermal conductivity of high-Tc cuprates

Recently, it was proposed that phonons are specularly reflected below about 0.5 K in ordinary single-crystal samples of high-T_c cuprates, and that the low-temperature thermal conductivity should be analyzed by fitting the data up to 0.5 K using an arbitrary power law. Such an analysis yields a result different from that obtained from the conventional analysis, in which the fitting is usually restricted to a region below 0.15 K. Here we show that the proposed new analysis is most likely flawed, because the specular phonon reflection means that the phonon mean free path \ell gets LONGER than the mean sample width, while the estimated \ell is actually much SHORTER than the mean sample width above 0.15 K.

Spin-glass state of vortices in YBa2Cu3Oy and La2-xSrxCuO4 below the metal-to-insulator crossover

Highly disordered magnetism confined to individual weakly interacting vortices is detected by muon spin rotation in two different families of high-transition-temperature superconductors, but only in samples on the low-doping side of the low-temperature normal state metal-to-insulator crossover (MIC). The results support an extended quantum phase transition (QPT) theory of competing magnetic and superconducting orders that incorporates the coupling between CuO2 planes. Contrary to what has been inferred from previous experiments, the static magnetism that coexists with superconductivity near the field-induced QPT is not ordered. Our findings unravel the mystery of the MIC and establish that the normal state of high-temperature superconductors is ubiquitously governed by a magnetic quantum critical point in the superconducting phase.

Avoided Quantum Criticality in YBa_2Cu_3O_y and La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

Spin-glass magnetism confined to individual weakly interacting vortices is detected in two different families of high-transition-temperature (T_c) superconductors, but only in samples on the low-doping side of the low-temperature normal state metal-to-insulator crossover (MIC). Our findings unravel the mystery of the MIC, but more importantly identify the true location of the field-induced quantum phase transition (QPT) in the superconducting state. The non-uniform appearance of magnetism in the vortex state favours a surprisingly exotic phase diagram, in which spatially inhomogeneous competing order is stabilized at the QPT, and an `avoided' quantum critical point (QCP) is realized at zero magnetic field.

Electronic Inhomogeneity and Breakdown of the Universal Thermal Conductivity in Cuprate Superconductors

We report systematic, high-precision measurements of the low-T (down to 70 mK) thermal conductivity κof YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}, La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}. Careful examinations of the Zn- and hole-doping dependences of the residual thermal conductivity κ_{0}/T, as well as the in-plane anisotropy of κ_{0}/T in Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}, indicate a breakdown of the universal thermal conductivity, a notable theoretical prediction for d-wave superconductors. Our results point to an important role of electronic inhomogeneities, that are not considered in the standard perturbation theory for thermal conductivity, in the under- to optimally-doped regime.

Large magneto-thermal effect and the spin-phonon coupling in a parent insulating cuprate Pr_{1.3}La_{0.7}CuO_4

The magnetic-field (H) dependence of the thermal conductivity κof Pr_{1.3}La_{0.7}CuO_4 is found to show a pronounced minimum for in-plane fields at low temperature, which is best attributed to the scattering of phonons by free spins that are seen by a Schottky-type specific heat and a Curie-Weiss susceptibility. Besides pointing to a strong spin-phonon coupling in cuprates, the present result demonstrates that the H-dependence of the phonon heat transport should not be naively neglected when discussing the κ(H) behavior of cuprates, since the Schottky anomaly is ubiquitously found in cuprates at any doping.

Low-temperature nodal-quasiparticle transport in lightly doped YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} near the edge of the superconducting doping regime

In-plane transport properties of nonsuperconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} (y = 6.35) are measured using high-quality untwinned single crystals. We find that both the a- and b-axis resistivities show log(1/T) divergence down to 80 mK, and accordingly the thermal conductivity data indicate that the nodal quasiparticles are progressively localized with lowering temperature. Hence, both the charge and heat transport data do not support the existence of a "thermal metal" in nonsuperconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}, as opposed to a recent report by Sutherland {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 94}, 147004 (2005)]. Besides, the present data demonstrate that the peculiar log(1/T) resistivity divergence of cuprate is {\it not} a property associated with high-magnetic fields.

Metal-to-Insulator Crossover in YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} Probed by Low-Temperature Quasiparticle Heat Transport

It was recently demonstrated that in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} the magnetic-field (H) dependence of the low-temperature thermal conductivity κup to 16 T reflects whether the normal state is a metal or an insulator. We measure the H dependence of κin YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} (YBCO) at subkelvin temperatures for a wide doping range, and find that at low doping the κ(H) behavior signifies the change in the ground state in this system as well. Surprisingly, the critical doping is found to be located deeply inside the underdoped region, about the hole doping of 0.07 hole/Cu; this critical doping is apparently related to the stripe correlations as revealed by the in-plane resistivity anisotropy.

Quantum Phase Transitions in a Cuprate Superconductor Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_{x}CuO_{6+δ}

To elucidate a quantum phase transition (QPT) in Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ}, we measure charge and heat transport properties at very low temperatures and examine the following characteristics for a wide range of doping: normal-state resistivity anisotropy under 58 T, temperature dependence of the in-plane thermal conductivity K_{ab}, and the magnetic-field dependence of K_{ab}. It turns out that all of them show signatures of a QPT at the 1/8 hole doping. Together with the recent normal-state Hall measurements under 58 T that signified the existence of a QPT at optimum doping, the present results indicate that there are two QPTs in the superconducting doping regime of this material.

Thermal Conductivity of Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_xCuO_4 Single Crystals and Signatures of Stripes in an Electron-Doped Cuprate

It was recently demonstrated that the anisotropic phonon heat transport behavior is a good probe of the stripe formation in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) [X. F. Sun {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 67}, 104503 (2003)]. Using this probe, we examined an electron-doped cuprate Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_xCuO_4 (PLCCO) and found that essentially the same features as those in LSCO are observed. Moreover, the in-plane resistivity ρ_{ab} of lightly-doped PLCCO shows metallic behavior (dρ_{ab}/dT > 0) in the Néel ordered state with a mobility comparable to that in LSCO. It is discussed that these peculiar properties in common with LSCO signify the existence of stripes in electron-doped cuprates.

Heat transport of La$_{2-y}$Eu$_y$CuO$_4$ and La$_{1.88-y}$Eu$_y$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ single crystals

To study the rare-earth doping effect on the phonon heat transport of La-based cuprates and shed light on the mechanism of phonon scattering, both $ab$-plane and c-axis thermal conductivities ($κ_{ab}$ and $κ_c$) are measured for La$_{2-y}$Eu$_y$CuO$_4$ ($y$ = 0, 0.02 and 0.2) and La$_{1.88-y}$Eu$_y$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ ($y$ = 0 and 0.2) single crystals. It is found that the phonon peak (at 20 -- 25 K) in $κ_{ab}(T)$ of La$_{2-y}$Eu$_y$CuO$_4$ shows an anomalous Eu-doping dependence: it completely disappears for $y$ = 0.02, which is discussed to be due to the local lattice distortions around Eu dopants, and reappears for $y$ = 0.2 with much smaller peak magnitude compared to $y$ = 0 sample. In contrast to the strong suppression of the phonon peak in Eu-doped La$_2$CuO$_4$, Eu-doping to La$_{1.88}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ enhances the low-$T$ phonon heat transport that results in the reappearance of the phonon peak in this charge-carrier-doped system. The data clearly show that the establishment of static stripe phase rather than the structural change is responsible for the reappearance of phonon peak.

Peculiar roles of spins in the thermal conductivity of pure and doped La_{2}CuO_{4}: Comparison with CuGeO_{3}

In-plane and out-of-plane thermal conductivities (κ_{ab} and κ_{c}) are measured on single crystals of pure, 1%-hole-doped, and 1%-Zn-doped La_{2}CuO_{4}. The roles of magnons and the spin stripes in the heat transport in these samples are discussed. Comparison with the heat transport in CuGeO_{3}, which shows similar κ(T) behavior as that of La_{2}CuO_{4}, gives us a lesson of how the heat transport can probe the difference in the spin ground state.

Magnetic-Field-Induced Localization of Quasiparticles in Underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ Single Crystals

Magnetic-field-induced ordering of electrons around vortices is a striking phenomenon recently found in high-$T_c$ cuprates. To identify its consequence in the quasiparticle dynamics, the magnetic-field ($H$) dependence of the low-temperature thermal conductivity $κ$ of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ crystals is studied for a wide doping range. It is found that the behavior of $κ(H)$ in the sub-Kelvin region changes drastically across optimum doping, and the data for underdoped samples are indicative of unusual magnetic-field-induced localization of quasiparticles; this localization phenomenon is probably responsible for the unusual "insulating normal state" under high magnetic fields.

Significant suppression of weak ferromagnetism in (La${}_{1.8}$Eu${}_{0.2}$)CuO${}_4$

The magnetic structure of (La${}_{1.8}$Eu${}_{0.2}$)CuO${}_4$ has been studied by magnetization measurements of single crystals, which show antiferromagnetic long-range order below $T_N$ = 265 K and a structural phase transition at $T_s$ = 130 K. At $T_s < T < T_N$, the Cu spin susceptibility exhibits almost the same behavior as that of La${}_2$CuO${}_4$ in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, which indicates the existence of finite spin canting out of the CuO${}_2$ plane. At $T < T_s$, the magnitude of the weak-ferromagnetic moment induced by the spin canting is suppressed approximately by 70{%}. This significant suppression of the weak-ferromagnetic moment is carefully compared with the theoretical analysis of weak ferromagnetism by Stein {\it et al.} (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 53}, 775 (1996)), in which the magnitude of weak-ferromagnetic moments strongly depend on the crystallographic symmetry. Based on such comparison, below $T_s$ (La${}_{1.8}$Eu${}_{0.2}$)CuO${}_4$ is in the low-temperature less-orthorhombic phase with a space group of $Pccn$. We also discuss the possible magnetic structure of the pure low-temperature tetragonal phase with space group $P4_2/{ncm}$, which is relevant for rare-earth and alkaline-earth ions co-doped La${}_2$CuO${}_4$.

Core Size Effect on the Vortex Quasiparticle Excitations in Overdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ Single Crystals

Low temperature specific heat has been measured for an overdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ (x = 0.22) single crystal. The quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in the mixed state is found to deviate from the predicted scaling law $C_{vol}=Hf(T/H^{1/2})$. However, this scaling behavior is nicely reconciled if one considers the normal core region ($ξ\approx$ 21$Å$) which gives small contribution to the total DOS. The radius of the core and other parameters derived are consistent with reported values. Our results suggest that there is no zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP), which is predicted by the simple Bogoliubov de-Gennes theory in the vortex core of a d-wave superconductor.

Thermal conductivity of lightly Sr- and Zn-doped La$_2$CuO$_4$ single crystals

Both ab-plane and c-axis thermal conductivities ($κ_{ab}$ and $κ_c$) of lightly doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and La$_2$Cu$_{1-y}$Zn$_y$O$_4$ single crystals ($x$ or $y$ = 0 -- 0.04) are measured from 2 to 300 K. It is found that the low-temperature phonon peak (at 20 -- 25 K) is significantly suppressed upon Sr or Zn doping even at very low doping, though its precise doping dependences show interesting differences between the Sr and Zn dopants, or between the $ab$ plane and the c axis. Most notably, the phonon peak in $κ_c$ decreases much more quickly with Sr doping than with Zn doping, while the phonon-peak suppression in $κ_{ab}$ shows an opposite trend. It is discussed that the scattering of phonons by stripes is playing an important role in the damping of the phonon heat transport in lightly doped LSCO, in which static spin stripes has been observed by neutron scattering. We also show $κ_{ab}$ and $κ_c$ data of La$_{1.28}$Nd$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ and La$_{1.68}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ single crystals to compare with the data of the lightly doped crystals for the discussion of the role of stripes. At high temperature, the magnon peak (i.e., the peak caused by the spin heat transport near the Néel temperature) in $κ_{ab}(T)$ is found to be rather robust against Zn doping, while it completely disappears with only 1% of Sr doping.

c-Axis Transport and Resistivity Anisotropy of Lightly- to Moderately-Doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} Single Crystals: Implications on the Charge Transport Mechanism

Both the in-plane and the out-of-plane resistivities (ρ_{ab} and ρ_{c}) are measured in high-quality La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (LSCO) single crystals in the lightly- to moderately-doped region, x = 0.01 to 0.10, and the resistivity anisotropy is determined. In all the samples studied, the anisotropy ratio ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} quickly increases with decreasing temperature, although in non-superconducting samples the strong localization effect causes ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} to decrease at low temperatures. Most notably, it is found that ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} at moderate temperatures (100 - 300 K) is almost completely independent of doping in the non-superconducting regime (x = 0.01 to 0.05); this indicates that the same charge confinement mechanism that renormalizes the c-axis hopping rate is at work down to x = 0.01. It is discussed that this striking x-independence of ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} is consistent with the idea that holes form a self-organized network of hole-rich regions, which also explains the unusually metallic in-plane transport of the holes in the lightly-doped region. Furthermore, the data for x > 0.05 suggest that the emergence of the superconductivity is related to an increase in the c-axis coupling.

Novel anisotropy in the superconducting gap structure of Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} probed by quasiparticle heat transport

Since the nature of pairing interactions is manifested in the superconducting gap symmetry, the exact gap structure, particularly any deviation from the simple d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry, would help elucidating the pairing mechanism in high-T_c cuprates. Anisotropic heat transport measurement in Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} (Bi-2212) reveals that the quasiparticle populations are different for the two nodal directions and thus the gap structure must be uniquely anisotropic, suggesting that pairing is governed by interactions with a rather complicated anisotropy. Intriguingly, it is found that the "plateau" in the magnetic-field dependence of the thermal conductivity is observed only in the b-axis transport.

Low-temperature electronic heat transport in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals: Unusual low-energy physics in the normal and superconducting states

The thermal conductivity κis measured in a series of La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x = 0 - 0.22) single crystals down to 90 mK to elucidate the evolution of the residual electronic thermal conductivity κ_{res}, which probes the extended quasiparticle states in the d-wave gap. We found that κ_{res}/T grows smoothly, except for a 1/8 anomaly, above x = 0.05 and shows no discontinuity at optimum doping, indicating that the behavior of κ_{res}/T is not governed by the metal-insulator crossover in the normal state; as a result, κ_{res}/T is much larger than what the normal-state resistivity would suggest in the underdoped region, which highlights the peculiarities in the low-energy physics in the cuprates.
