Error analysis in suppression of unwanted qubit interactions for a parametric gate in a tunable superconducting circuit

We experimentally demonstrate a parametric iSWAP gate in a superconducting circuit based on a tunable coupler for achieving a continuous tunability to eliminate unwanted qubit interactions. We implement the twoqubit iSWAP gate by applying a fast-flux bias modulation pulse on the coupler to turn on parametric exchange interaction between computational qubits. The controllable interaction can provide an extra degree of freedom to verify the optimal condition for constructing the parametric gate. Aiming to fully investigate error sources of the two-qubit gates, we perform quantum process tomography measurements and numerical simulations as varying static ZZ coupling strength. We quantitatively calculate the dynamic ZZ coupling parasitizing in two-qubit gate operation, and extract the particular gate error from the decoherence, dynamic ZZ coupling and high-order oscillation terms. Our results reveal that the main gate error comes from the decoherence, while the increase in the dynamic ZZ coupling and high-order oscillation error degrades the parametric gate performance. This approach, which has not yet been previously explored, provides a guiding principle to improve gate fidelity of parametric iSWAP gate by suppression of the unwanted qubit interactions. This controllable interaction, together with the parametric modulation technique, is desirable for crosstalk free multiqubit quantum circuits and quantum simulation applications.

Heat switch effect in an antiferromagnetic insulator Co$_3$V$_2$O$_8$

We report a heat switch effect in single crystals of an antiferromagnet Co$_3$V$_2$O$_8$, that is, the thermal conductivity ($κ$) can be changed with magnetic field in an extremely large scale. Due to successive magnetic phase transitions at 12--6 K, the zero-field $κ(T)$ displays a deep minimum at 6.7 K and rather small magnitude at low temperatures. Both the temperature and field dependencies of $κ$ demonstrate that the phonons are strongly scattered at the regime of magnetic phase transitions. Magnetic field can suppress magnetic scattering effect and significantly recover the phonon thermal conductivity. In particular, a 14 T field along the $a$ axis increases the $κ$ at 7.5 K up to 100 times. For $H \parallel c$, the magnitude of $κ$ can be suppressed down to $\sim$ 8% at some field-induced transition and can be enhanced up to 20 times at 14 T. The present results demonstrate that it is possible to design a kind of heat switch in the family of magnetic materials.

Phase transitions in a frustrated biquadratic Heisenberg model with coupled orbital degree of freedom for iron-based superconductors

In this work, we study a biquadratic Heisenberg model with coupled orbital degree of freedom using Monte Carlo simulation in order to investigate the phase transitions in iron-based superconductors. The antiferro-quadrupolar state, which may be related to the magnetism of FeSe [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 116401 (2015)], is stabilized by the anisotropic biquadratic interaction induced by a ferro-orbital-ordered state. It is revealed that the orbital and nematic transitions occur at the same temperature for all the cases, supporting the mechanism of the orbital-driven nematicity as revealed in most recent experiments [Nat. Mater. 14, 210 (2015)]. In addition, it is suggested that the orbital interaction may lead to the separation of the structural and magnetic phase transitions as observed in many families of iron pnictides.

Temperature dependence of lower critical field in stripe ordered La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 superconductors

We report detailed measurements of the temperature dependence of the lower critical field Hc1 in the stripe ordered La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 (x = 0.10 and 0.15) superconductors. It is found that Hc1(T) of the samples increase with decreasing temperature and show an negative curvature below Tc. The penetration depth λ(T) estimated from Hc1(T) data satisfies a linear temperature dependence behavior below Tc/2, which is consistent with that in a superconductor with d-wave symmetry of the energy gap and the upward trend in Hc1(T) may be due to the cooperation of the hole and election pockets arising from the reconstruction of the Fermi surface, which contributes to illustrating the Fermi surface reconstruction in La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4.

Low-temperature thermal conductivity of Dy_2Ti_2O_7 and Yb_2Ti_2O_7 single crystals

We study the low-temperature thermal conductivity (κ) of Dy_2Ti_2O_7 and Yb_2Ti_2O_7 single crystals in magnetic fields up to 14 T along the [111], [100] and [110] directions. The main experimental findings for Dy_2Ti_2O_7 are: (i) the low-T κ(H) isotherms exhibit not only the step-like decreases at the low-field (< 2 T) magnetic transitions but also obvious field dependencies in high fields (> 7 T); (ii) at T \le 0.5 K, the κ(H) curves show anisotropic irreversibility in low fields, that is, the κ(H) hysteresis locates at the first-order transition with H \parallel [100] and [110], while it locates between two successive transitions with H \parallel [111]; (iii) the κin the hysteresis loops for H \parallel [100] and [110] show an extremely slow relaxation with the time constant of \sim 1000 min. The main experimental findings for Yb_2Ti_2O_7 are: (i) the zero-field κ(T) show a kink-like decrease at the first-order transition (\sim 200 mK) with decreasing temperature; (ii) the low-T κ(H) isotherms show a decrease in low field and a large enhancement in high fields; (iii) the low-T κ(H) curves show a sharp minimum at 0.5 T for H \parallel [110] and [111]. The roles of monopole excitations, field-induced transitions, spin fluctuations and magnetoelastic coupling are discussed.

Low-temperature heat transport of Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals

We report a study of the Ce doping effect on the thermal conductivity (κ) of Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} (NCCO) at low temperatures down to 0.3 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. It is found that with Ce doping, the electronic thermal conductivity increases; at the same time, the a-axis field induced changes in κ(H), associated with the spin flop and spin polarization of Nd^{3+} sublattice, and the spin flop of Cu^{2+} sublattice, gradually disappear. These are clearly due to the electron doping and the destruction of the antiferromagnetic orders. In the superconducting NCCO with x = 0.14 and 0.18, although the electronic thermal conductivity shows sizable field dependencies with H // c, the paramagnetic scattering of phonons is still playing the dominant role in the heat transport, which is different from many other cuprates. In the lightly doped samples (x = 0.03 and 0.06), the low-T κ(H) isotherms with H // c show a step-like anomaly and is likely related to the spin/charge stripes.

Ground state and magnetic phase transitions of orthoferrite DyFeO_3

Low-temperature thermal conductivity (κ), as well as magnetization (M) and electric polarization (P), of multiferroic orthoferrite DyFeO_3 single crystals are studied with H \parallel c. When the crystal is cooled in zero field, M, P, and κall consistently exhibit irreversible magnetic-field dependencies. In particular, with 500 mK < T \le 2 K, all these properties show two transitions at the first run of increasing field but only the higher-field transition is present in the subsequent field sweepings. Moreover, the ultra-low-T (T < 500 mK) κ(H) shows a different irreversibility and there is only one transition when the field is swept both up and down. All the results indicate a complex low-T H-T phase diagram involving successive magnetic phase transitions of the Fe^{3+} spins. In particular, the ground state, obtained with cooling to subKelvin temperatures in zero field, is found to be an unexplored phase.

Rare case of magnetic Ag$^{3+}$ ion: double perovskite Cs$_{2}$KAgF$_{6}$

Normally $4d$ or $5d$ transition metals are in a low-spin state. Here using first-principles calculations, we report on a rare case of a high-spin $S$=1 magnetic state for the Ag$^{3+}$ ion in the double perovskite Cs$_{2}$KAgF$_{6}$. We also explored a possibility of a conventional low-spin $S$=0 ground state and find an associated tetragonal distortion to be 0.29 Å. However, the lattice elastic energy cost and the Hund exchange loss exceed the e$_{g}$ crystal-field energy gain, thus making the low-spin tetragonal structure less favorable than the high-spin cubic structure. We conclude that the compact perovskite structure of Cs$_{2}$KAgF$_{6}$ is an important factor in stabilizing the unusual high-spin ground state of Ag$^{3+}$.

Large exchange bias after zero-field cooling from an unmagnetized state

Exchange bias (EB) is usually observed in systems with interface between different magnetic phases after field cooling. Here we report an unusual phenomenon in which a large EB can be observed in Ni-Mn-In bulk alloys after zero-field cooling from an unmagnetized state. We propose this is related to the newly formed interface between different magnetic phases during the initial magnetization process. The magnetic unidirectional anisotropy, which is the origin of EB effect, can be created isothermally below the blocking temperature.

Angular Dependence of X-ray Absorption Spectrum for Field-aligned Fe-based Superconductors

Anisotropic Fe K-edge and As K-edge X-ray absorption near edge spectrum (XANES) measurements on superconducting (T_c = 52 K) (Sm_{0.95}La_{0.05})FeAs(O_{0.85}F_{0.15}) field-aligned microcrystalline powder are presented. The angular dependence of Fe pre-edge peak (dipole transition of Fe-1s electrons to Fe-3d/As-4p hybrid bands) relative to the tetragonal ab-plane of aligned powder indicates larger density of state (DOS) along the c-axis, and is consistent with the LDA band structure calculation. The anisotropic Fe K-edge spectra exhibit a chemical shift to lower energy compared to FeO which are closely related to the itinerant character of Fe^{2+}-3d^6 orbitals. The anisotropic As K-edge spectra are more or less the mirror images of Fe K-edge due to the symmetrical Fe-As hybridiztion in the FeAs layer. Angular dependence of As main peak (dipole transition of As-1s electrons to higher energy hybrid bands) was observed suggesting character of As-4d e_g orbitals.

Interface Ferromagnetism in (110)-Oriented La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrTiO3 Ultrathin Superlattices

We explore manganite interface magnetism in epitaxially grown La0.7Sr0.3MnO3(LSMO)/SrTiO3 ultrathin superlattices (SL) along (110) orientation. we show that robust ferromagnetism persists down to four monolayers LSMO(MLs) (~1.1 nm in thickness), of which 50% Mn is at the interface state. Above eight MLs, the magnetic moment is nearly saturated to the theoretical value of 3.7u_B, with an estimated interface moment of 3.2u_B. In comparison to (100)-oriented SLs which were previously shown to have a spin canted ground state, (110)-oriented SLs exhibit stronger low-dimensional ferromagnetism and better metallicity, suggesting a ferromagnetic interface spin state well suited for all-oxide spintronic devices. The underlining mechanism is qualitatively discussed.

Anisotropic superconducting properties of aligned Sm$_{0.95}$La$_{0.05}$FeAsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ microcrystalline powder

The Sm$_{0.95}$La$_{0.05}$FeAsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ compound is a quasi-2D layered superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ = 52 K. Due to the Fe spin-orbital related anisotropic exchange coupling (antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic fluctuation), the tetragonal microcrystalline powder can be aligned at room temperature using the field-rotation method where the tetragonal $\it{ab}$-plane is parallel to the aligned magnetic field B$_{a}$ and $\it{c}$-axis along the rotation axis. Anisotropic superconducting properties with anisotropic diamagnetic ratio $χ_{c}/χ_{ab}\sim$ 2.4 + 0.6 was observed from low field susceptibility $χ$(T) and magnetization M(B$_{a}$). The anisotropic low-field phase diagram with the variation of lower critical field gives a zero-temperature penetration depth $λ_{c}$(0) = 280 nm and $λ_{ab}$(0) = 120 nm. The magnetic fluctuation used for powder alignment at 300 K may be related with the pairing mechanism of superconductivity at lower temperature.

Visualizing high-temperature spin dynamics in La1-xCaxMnO3 from a mapping of EPR linewidth and g factor

This paper presents an analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance parameters, i.e., g factor, linewidth, and intensity on powder samples of La1-xCaxMnO3 at the commensurate carrier concentrations of x = N/8 (N = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7). We demonstrate that the mapping of EPR parameters offers a powerful tool to investigate high-temperature spin dynamics in the phase diagram of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) manganites. Our results convince that the spin-spin relaxation mechanism should dominate the high-temperature paramagnetic regime in CMR manganites.

The transport, ultrasound, and structural properties for the charge ordered Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<=x<=0.875) manganites

The effects of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect on the crystal structure and the stability of the charge ordered (CO) state were studied by measurements of powder X-ray diffraction, resistivity, and ultrasound for Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<=x<=0.875). Powder X-ray diffraction revealed a change of the crystal structure from tetragonally compressed to tetragonally elongated orthorhombic between x=0.75 and x=0.8 in the CO state, resulting from the crossover of the cooperative Jahn-Teller vibration mode from Q2 to Q3. The relative stiffening of the ultrasound (DeltaV/V) reflecting the magnitude of the cooperative Jahn-Teller lattice distortion in the CO state increases with increasing x from 0.5 to 0.625, reaching the largest and being almost x-independence for 0.625<x<0.8, and drops steeply with further increase of x. Coincident with the variation of the DeltaV/V with x, the stability of the CO state reflected by the magnetoresistance effect increases with increasing x from 0.5 to 0.625, reaching the most stable for 0.625<x<0.825, and becomes unstable with further increase of x. These features demonstrate that the cooperative Jahn-Teller lattice distortion is one of the key ingredients in understanding the essential physics of the CO state in manganites.

The role of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect in the charge ordered La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<=x<=0.87) manganites

Based on the magnetoresistance, magnetization, ultrasound, and crystallographic data, we studied the role of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect in the charge ordered (CO) state for La1-xCaxMnO3. We found that, with increasing the fraction of Q3 mode of Jahn-Teller distortion and decreasing that of Q2 mode in the CO state, the magnetic structure evolves from CE-type to C-type and the orbital ordering changes from 3d(x2-r2)/3d(y2-r2)-type to 3d(x2-z2)-type, with the strength of ferromagnetism and the phase separation tendency being suppressed. At the same time, the stability of the CO state and the cooperative Jahn-Teller lattice distortion increase. These effects imply that the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect with different vibration modes is the key ingredient in understanding the essential physics of the CO state.

Dimensional Crossover of Vortex Dynamics Induced by Gd Substitution on Bi2212 Single Crystals

The vortex dynamics of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$Cu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ single crystals is investigated by magnetic relaxation and hysteresis measurements. By substituting $Ca$ with $Gd$, it is found that the interlayer Josephson coupling is weakened and the anisotropy is increased, which leads to the change of vortex dynamics from 3D elastic to 2D plastic vortex creep. Moreover, the second magnetization peak, which can be observed in samples near the optimal doping, is absent in the strongly underdoped (with 2D vortex) region.
