Development for the Belle II vertex detector upgrade with depleted monolithic active pixel sensors

The vertex detector upgrade project for the Belle II experiment, based on CMOS depleted monolithic active pixel sensor technology, is planned to be carried out in conjunction with the major modification of the interaction region of the SuperKEKB collider during Long Shutdown 2 from 2032 to 2034. The MAPS sensor, named OBELIX currently under development, is derived from the successor to TJ-Monopix2, with modifications implemented to ensure compatibility with the Belle II trigger system. The new vertex detector consists of two layers of four self-supported consecutive OBELIX sensors, and three layers of discrete OBELIX sensors mounted on mechanical support structures with readout flex circuits attached to the sensors. The detector is arranged cylindrically around the beam pipe at radii ranging from 14 mm to 140 mm. The minimization of the material budget is required in order to enhance physics performance. We present an overview of the project and its latest developments, with particular emphasis on the development of low-material-budget flex circuits employing aluminum conductors.

Application of exhaustive simulation flow for advanced performance prediction of monolithic active pixel sensors

Monolithic active pixel sensor (MAPS) developments have pushed the detection performance in various directions, especially relative to timing where nanosecond-level precision is now considered. This evolution calls for a simultaneous upgrade of the simulation tools. We have developed a simulation flow that covers steps from the signal creation in the sensitive volume to the output of the pixel digital logic that performs the time-of-arrival and time-over-threshold (ToA/ToT) measurements. This approach adds several new features to the traditional use the of the TCAD - Allpix Squared duo, among which : the integration of the pixel wells from the layout in order to precisely describe the pixel key characteristics such as leakage and punch-through currents and the coupling of Monte Carlo simulations (Allpix Squared) with high precision electrical simulations (SPICE). The first (Allpix Squared) for the precise description of the current induced at the collection electrode and the second (SPICE) to guarantee high precision simulation of the front-end electronics using realistic signal events. Irradiation is also modeled, both from the charge propagation side (charge trapping) and from the front-end response side (high input signal discharge). We have applied this methodology to the MAPS developed in the context of the Belle II vertex detector upgrade. In this contribution, we detail the key features of the exhaustive simulation flow, present the outcome of the comparison with the TJ-Monopix2 measurements and discuss the interest of the methodology for the development of modern MAPS.

An energetic dirty fireball detected in soft X-rays

The collapse of massive stars drives explosions that power relativistic fireballs. If only a small amount of matter is entrained, such clean fireballs can expand with Lorentz factors $\Gamma> 100$, accounting for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). It has been hypothesized that energetic explosions with more baryon contamination, dubbed ``dirty fireballs'', may exist in nature, but they have not been observed. Here we report the observation of an extragalactic fast X-ray transient, EP241113a, detected by Einstein Probe. Compared to GRBs, it has a similar isotropic energy of $1.4\times 10^{51}$ erg, but significantly lower spectral peak energy. Theoretical modeling of its early X-ray afterglow suggests a relativistic jet with a low Lorentz factor of $\Gamma \sim 20$ aligned close to the line-of-sight, signifying the prototype of a dirty fireball.

Influence of external magnetic fields on charged particle motion around a Schwarzschild-like black hole

We investigate the dynamics of charged and neutral particles in the vicinity of a Schwarzschild-like black hole immersed in an external magnetic field. We find that the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCOs) for charged particles are systematically smaller than those of neutral particles, demonstrating a fundamental distinction in their orbital dynamics. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, charged particle ISCOs can approach arbitrarily close to the event horizon. We show that collisions between charged particles in ISCOs and neutral particles falling from infinity can produce unbounded center-of-mass energies in the strong-field regime, suggesting the black hole magnetosphere as a natural particle accelerator. Additionally, we apply the relativistic precession model to study quasi-periodic oscillations around the Schwarzschild-like black hole, treating orbital perturbations as coupled harmonic oscillators. Our results provide new insights into high-energy astrophysical processes near magnetized black holes and offer observational signatures through quasi-periodic oscillating frequencies that could be detected by current and future X-ray missions.

Direct integration of atomic precision advanced manufacturing into middle-of-line silicon fabrication

Atomic precision advanced manufacturing (APAM) dopes silicon with enough carriers to change its electronic structure and can be used to create novel devices by defining metallic regions whose boundaries have single-atom abruptness. Incompatibility with the thermal and lithography process requirements for gated silicon transistor manufacturing have inhibited exploration of both how APAM can enhance CMOS performance and how transistor manufacturing steps can accelerate the discovery of new APAM device concepts. In this work, we introduce an APAM process that enables direct integration into the middle of a transistor manufacturing workflow. We show that a process that combines sputtering and annealing with a hardmask preserves a defining characteristic of APAM, a doping density far in excess of the solid solubility limit, while trading another, the atomic precision, for compatibility with manufacturing. The electrical characteristics of a chip combining a transistor with an APAM resistor show that the APAM module has only affected the transistor through the addition of a resistance and not by altering the transistor. This proof-of-concept demonstration also outlines the requirements and limitations of a unified APAM tool, which could be introduced into manufacturing environments, greatly expanding access to this technology and inspiring a new generation of devices with it.

Soft X-ray prompt emission from a high-redshift gamma-ray burst EP240315a

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to originate from core collapse of massive stars. High-redshift GRBs can probe the star formation and reionization history of the early universe, but their detection remains rare. Here we report the detection of a GRB triggered in the 0.5--4 keV band by the Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, designated as EP240315a, whose bright peak was also detected by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope and Konus-Wind through off-line analyses. At a redshift of $z=4.859$, EP240315a showed a much longer and more complicated light curve in the soft X-ray band than in gamma-rays. Benefiting from a large field-of-view ($\sim$3600 deg$^2$) and a high sensitivity, EP-WXT captured the earlier engine activation and extended late engine activity through a continuous detection. With a peak X-ray flux at the faint end of previously known high-$z$ GRBs, the detection of EP240315a demonstrates the great potential for EP to study the early universe via GRBs.

I-mode Plasma Confinement Improvement by Real-time Lithium Injection and its Classification on EAST Tokamak

I-mode is a promising regime for future fusion reactors due to the high energy confinement and the moderate particle confinement. However, the effect of lithium, which has been widely applied for particle recycling and impurity control, on I-mode plasma is still unclear. Recently, experiments of real-time lithium powder injection on I-mode plasma have been carried out in EAST Tokamak. It was found that the confinement performance of the I-mode can be improved by the lithium powder injection, which can strongly reduce electron turbulence (ET) and then trigger ion turbulence (IT). Four different regimes of I-mode have been identified in EAST. The Type I I-mode plasma is characterized by the weakly coherent mode (WCM) and the geodesic-acoustic mode (GAM). The Type II I-mode is featured as the WCM and the edge temperature ring oscillation (ETRO). The Type III I-mode corresponds to the plasma with the co-existence of ETRO, GAM, and WCM. The Type IV I-mode denotes the plasma with only WCM but without ETRO and GAM. It has been observed that WCM and ETRO are increased with lithium powder injection due to the reduction of ion and electron turbulence, and the enhancement of the pedestal electron temperature gradient. EAST experiments demonstrate that lithium powder injection is an effective tool for real-time control and confinement improvement of I-mode plasma.

On the combinatorics of descents and inverse descents in the hyperoctahedral group

The elements in the hyperoctahedral group $\mathfrak{B}_n$ can be treated as signed permutations with the natural order $\cdots<-2<-1<0<1<2<\cdots$, or as colored permutations with the $r$-order $-1<_r-2<_r\cdots<_r0<_r1<_r2<_r\cdots$. For any $π\in\mathfrak{B}_n$, let $\operatorname{des}^B(π)$ and $\operatorname{ides}^B(π)$ be the number of descents and inverse descents in $π$ under the natural order, and let $\operatorname{des}_B(π)$ and $\operatorname{ides}_B(π)$ be the number of descents and inverse descents in $π$ under the $r$-order. In this paper, by investigating signed permutation grids under both the natural order and the $r$-order, we give combinatorial proofs for six recurrence formulas of the joint distribution of descents and inverse descents over the hyperoctahedral group $\mathfrak{B}_n$, the set in involutions of $\mathfrak{B}_n$ denoted by $\mathcal{I}_n^B$, and the set of fixed-point free involutions in $\mathfrak{B}_n$ denoted by $\mathcal{J}_n^B$, respectively. Some of these six formulas are new, and some reveal the combinatorial essences of the results obtained by Visontai, Moustakas and Cao-Liu through algebraic approaches such as quasisymmetric functions. Furthermore, from these formulas, we conclude that $(\operatorname{des}^B,\operatorname{ides}^B)$ and $(\operatorname{des}_B,\operatorname{ides}_B)$ are equidistributed over both $\mathfrak{B}_n$ and $\mathcal{I}_n^B$, but not on $\mathcal{J}_n^B$.

The Enhanced Resolution Imager and Spectrograph for the VLT

ERIS, the Enhanced Resolution Imager and Spectrograph, is an instrument that both extends and enhances the fundamental diffraction limited imaging and spectroscopy capability for the VLT. It replaces two instruments that were being maintained beyond their operational lifetimes, combines their functionality on a single focus, provides a new wavefront sensing module for natural and laser guide stars that makes use of the Adaptive Optics Facility, and considerably improves on their performance. The observational modes ERIS provides are integral field spectroscopy at 1-2.5 μm, imaging at 1-5 μm with several options for high contrast imaging, and longslit spectroscopy at 3-4 μm, The instrument is installed at the Cassegrain focus of UT4 at the VLT and, following its commissioning during 2022, has been made available to the community.

Possibility of forming a stable Bose-Einstein condensate of $2\,^{3}\!S_1$ positronium atoms

The confined variational method in conjunction with the orthogonalizing pseudo-potential method and the stabilization method is used to study the low energy elastic scattering between two spin-polarized metastable positronium Ps(2\,$^{3}\!S_1$) atoms. Explicitly correlated Gaussian basis functions are adopted to properly describe the complicated Coulomb interaction among the four charged particles. The calculated $s$-wave scattering length ($\approx8.5\,a_0$) is positive, indicating the possibility of forming a stable Bose-Einstein condensate of fully spin-polarized $\text{Ps}(2\,^{3}\!S_1)$ atoms. Our results will open a new way of experimental realization of Ps condensate and development of $γ$-ray and $\text{Ps}(2\,^{3}\!S_1)$ atom lasers.

Nonlinear study of local ballooning mode near the separatrix

Small edge-localized-mode (ELM), similar to the quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE), has been achieved by increasing the density at the separatrix. Starting from the Type-I ELM experimental data in EAST, we have performed a numerical separatrix density scan to study the formation of the small ELM using BOUT++ 6-field 2-fluid module. In the high separatrix density case, localized collapse near the separatrix has been found. The corresponding ELM size, dominant mode number, and filament transport match the experimental observations of the QCE. Local ballooning mode near separatrix has been identified in the nonlinear simulation. The mode is driven by the local pressure gradient and the mode structure is constrained by the ExB shear.

Investigations on Cmc2$_1$-Si$_2$P$_2$X structures and physical properties by first-principles calculations

The new structures, Cmc2$_1$-Si$_2$P$_2$X (X=S, Se, Te, and Po), are predicted, and their mechanical, electronic and optical properties are investigated with the density functional theory, by first principles calculations. The elastic constants of the four compounds are calculated by the stress-strain method. The calculations of the elastic stability criteria and phonon dispersion spectra imply that they are mechanically and dynamically stable at zero pressure. The mechanical parameters, such as shear moduli $G$, bulk moduli $B$, Young's moduli $E$ and Poisson's ratios $v$ are evaluated by the Voigt-Reuss-Hill approach. The Cmc2$_1$-Si$_2$P$_2$X has the largest hardness due to the largest Young's modulus in the four compounds, and it is a covalent crystal. The anisotropies of their mechanical properties are also analyzed. The band structures and densities of states, which are calculated by using HSE06, show that Cmc2$_1$-Si$_2$P$_2$X compounds are indirect bandgap semiconductors, and the values of the band gaps decrease with increasing atomic number from S, Se, Te, to Po. In addition, the longitudinal sound velocity and transverse sound velocity for Cmc2$_1$-Si$_2$P$_2$X have been investigated. The dielectric constant, electron energy loss, refractive index, reflectivity, absorption and conductivity are analyzed to gain the optical properties of Si$_2$P$_2$X.

Machine Learning Empowered Resource Allocation in IRS Aided MISO-NOMA Networks

A novel framework of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided multiple-input single-output (MISO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network is proposed, where a base station (BS) serves multiple clusters with unfixed number of users in each cluster. The goal is to maximize the sum rate of all users by jointly optimizing the passive beamforming vector at the IRS, decoding order, power allocation coefficient vector and number of clusters, subject to the rate requirements of users. In order to tackle the formulated problem, a three-step approach is proposed. More particularly, a long short-term memory (LSTM) based algorithm is first adopted for predicting the mobility of users. Secondly, a K-means based Gaussian mixture model (K-GMM) algorithm is proposed for user clustering. Thirdly, a deep Q-network (DQN) based algorithm is invoked for jointly determining the phase shift matrix and power allocation policy. Simulation results are provided for demonstrating that the proposed algorithm outperforms the benchmarks, while the throughput gain of 35% can be achieved by invoking NOMA technique instead of orthogonal multiple access (OMA).

Intermediate-luminosity red transients: Spectrophotometric properties and connection to electron-capture supernova explosions

We present the spectroscopic and photometric study of five intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs), namely AT 2010dn, AT 2012jc, AT 2013la, AT 2013lb, and AT 2018aes. They share common observational properties and belong to a family of objects similar to the prototypical ILRT SN~2008S. These events have a rise time that is less than 15 days and absolute peak magnitudes of between $-11.5$ and $-14.5$ mag. Their pseudo-bolometric light curves peak in the range $0.5$ - $9.0 \times10^{40}~\mathrm{erg~s}^{-1}$ and their total radiated energies are on the order of (0.3 - 3) $\times$~10$^{47}$~erg. After maximum brightness, the light curves show a monotonic decline or a plateau, resembling those of faint supernovae IIL or IIP, respectively. At late phases, the light curves flatten, roughly following the slope of the $^{56}$Co decay. If the late-time power source is indeed radioactive decay, these transients produce $^{56}$Ni masses on the order of $10^{-4}$ to $10^{-3}$~\msun. The spectral energy distribution of our ILRT sample, extending from the optical to the mid-infrared (MIR) domain, reveals a clear IR excess soon after explosion and non-negligible MIR emission at very late phases. The spectra show prominent H lines in emission with a typical velocity of a few hundred km~s$^{-1}$, along with Ca~II features. In particular, the [Ca~II] $λ$7291,7324 doublet is visible at all times, which is a characteristic feature for this family of transients. The identified progenitor of SN~2008S, which is luminous in archival Spitzer MIR images, suggests an intermediate-mass precursor star embedded in a dusty cocoon. We propose the explosion of a super-asymptotic giant branch star forming an electron-capture supernova as a plausible explanation for these events.

HiPERCAM: a quintuple-beam, high-speed optical imager on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias

HiPERCAM is a portable, quintuple-beam optical imager that saw first light on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) in 2018. The instrument uses re-imaging optics and 4 dichroic beamsplitters to record $u_s g_s r_s i_s z_s$ ($320-1060$ nm) images simultaneously on its five CCD cameras, each of 3.1 arcmin (diagonal) field of view. The detectors in HiPERCAM are frame-transfer devices cooled thermo-electrically to 183 K, thereby allowing both long-exposure, deep imaging of faint targets, as well as high-speed (over 1000 windowed frames per second) imaging of rapidly varying targets. A comparison-star pick-off system in the telescope focal plane increases the effective field of view to 6.7 arcmin for differential photometry. Combining HiPERCAM with the world's largest optical telescope enables the detection of astronomical sources to $g_s \sim 23$ in 1 s and $g_s \sim 28$ in 1 h. In this paper we describe the scientific motivation behind HiPERCAM, present its design, report on its measured performance, and outline some planned enhancements.

High resolution spectroscopic follow-up of the most metal-poor candidates from SkyMapper DR1.1

We present chemical abundances for 21 elements (from Li to Eu) in 150 metal-poor Galactic stars spanning $-$4.1 $<$ [Fe/H] $<$ $-$2.1. The targets were selected from the SkyMapper survey and include 90 objects with [Fe/H] $\le$ $-$3 of which some 15 have [Fe/H] $\le$ $-$3.5. When combining the sample with our previous studies, we find that the metallicity distribution function has a power-law slope of $Δ$(log N)/$Δ$[Fe/H] = 1.51 $\pm$ 0.01 dex per dex over the range $-$4 $\le$ [Fe/H] $\le$ $-$3. With only seven carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars in the sample, we again find that the selection of metal-poor stars based on SkyMapper filters is biased against highly carbon rich stars for [Fe/H] $>$ $-$3.5. Of the 20 objects for which we could measure nitrogen, 11 are nitrogen-enhanced metal-poor stars. Within our sample, the high NEMP fraction (55\% $\pm$ 21\%) is compatible with the upper range of predicted values (between 12\% and 35\%). The chemical abundance ratios [X/Fe] versus [Fe/H] exhibit similar trends to previous studies of metal-poor stars and Galactic chemical evolution models. We report the discovery of nine new r-I stars, four new r-II stars, one of which is the most metal-poor known, nine low-$α$ stars with [$α$/Fe] $\le$ 0.15 as well as one unusual star with [Zn/Fe] = +1.4 and [Sr/Fe] = +1.2 but with normal [Ba/Fe]. Finally, we combine our sample with literature data to provide the most extensive view of the early chemical enrichment of the Milky Way Galaxy.
