A multi-cubic-kilometre neutrino telescope in the western Pacific Ocean

Next-generation neutrino telescopes with significantly improved sensitivity are required to pinpoint the sources of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux detected by IceCube and uncover the century-old puzzle of cosmic ray origins. A detector near the equator will provide a unique viewpoint of the neutrino sky, complementing IceCube and other neutrino telescopes in the Northern Hemisphere. Here we present results from an expedition to the north-eastern region of the South China Sea, in the western Pacific Ocean. A favorable neutrino telescope site was found on an abyssal plain at a depth of $\sim$ 3.5km. At depths below 3km, the sea current speed, water absorption and scattering lengths for Cherenkov light, were measured to be $v_{\mathrm{c}}<$10cm/s, $λ_{\mathrm{abs} }\simeq$ 27m and $λ_{\mathrm{sca} }\simeq$ 63m, respectively. Accounting for these measurements, we present the design and expected performance of a next-generation neutrino telescope, TRopIcal DEep-sea Neutrino Telescope (TRIDENT). With its advanced photon-detection technology and large dimensions, TRIDENT expects to observe the IceCube steady source candidate NGC 1068 with 5$σ$ significance within 1 year of operation. This level of sensitivity will open a new arena for diagnosing the origin of cosmic rays and probing fundamental physics over astronomical baselines.

Modeling of the evolution of dielectric loss with processing temperature in ferroelectric and dielectric thin oxide films

It was experimentally found that the evolution of dielectric loss with processing temperature displays a common trend in ferroelectric and dielectric thin oxide films: firstly an increase and then a decrease in dielectric loss when the processing temperature is gradually raised. Such a dielectric response of ferroelectric/dielectric thin films has been theoretically addressed in this work. We propose that at the initial stage of the crystallization process in thin films, the transformation from amorphous to crystalline phase should increase substantially the dielectric loss; then, with further increase in the processing temperature, the coalescent growth of small crystalline grains into big ones could be helpful in reducing the dielectric loss by lowering grain boundary densities. The obtained experimental data for (Ba,Sr)TiO3 thin films with 500 nm in thickness were analyzed in terms of the model developed and shown to be in a reasonable agreement with the theoretical results.

Large LFMR observed in twinned La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 thin films epitaxially grown on YSZ-buffered SOI substrates

La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 thin films have been grown on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) buffered silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate by the pulsed laser deposition technique. While full cube-on-cube epitaxy was achieved for the YSZ layer, the top manganite layer was multi-domain-oriented, with a coexistence of cube-on-cube and cube-on-diagonal epitaxy. Due to a combined influence from the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and the magnetoelastic anisotropy, in zero field the local spin orientation varies across the twin boundaries. As a result, a quite large low-field magnetoresistance (LFMR) based on spin-dependent tunnelling was observed. The film shows a resistance change of ~20% in a magnetic field <1000 Oe at 50 K, which is promising for real applications.

Off-axis electron holography and microstructure of Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin film grown on LaAlO3

Epitaxial Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin films grown on the (001) LaAlO3 substrates with the ferroelectric transition of about 250K have been investigated by TEM and off-axis electron holography. Cross-sectional TEM observations show that the 350nm-thick Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 film has a sharp interface with notable misfit dislocations. Off-axis electron holographic measurements reveal that, at low temperatures, the ferroelectric polarization results in systematic accumulations of negative charges on the interface and positive charges on the film surface, and, at room temperature, certain charges could only accumulate at the interfacial dislocations and other defective areas.

The Type Ia Supernova 1997br in ESO 576-G40

The peculiar type Ia supernova SN 1997br in ESO 576-G40 was extensively observed at Beijing Astronomical Observatory and Lick Observatory. In this paper, we present and discuss the BVRI photometry and the spectra collected over 3 months, beginning 9 days before maximum brightness. The light curves of SN 1997br are similar to those of SN 1991T, with slow decline rates after the B maximum. Well-sampled data before the B maximum show unambiguously that SN 1997br rises more slowly and has a wider peak than normal type Ia supernovae. The optical color evolution of SN 1997br is also similar to that of SN 1991T. We estimate the extinction of SN 1997br to be E(B-V) = 0.35+/-0.10 mag by comparing its BVRI light curves with those of SN 1991T and by measureing the equivalent width of interstellar Na I D absorption lines. We have conducted a thorough comparison of the spectroscopic evolution of SN 1997br, SN 1991T, and SN 1994D. Although SN 1997br is generally very similar to SN 1991T, it shows some interesting differences at various epoches. Spectra of SN 1997br seem to indicate an earlier transition to the dominant phase of Fe-peak elements after the B maximum. Si II lines in SN 1997br show a very short duration after the B maximum. We discuss the implications of our observations of SN 1997br for models of type Ia supernovae. Specifically, we suggest that some SNe Ia may result from decelerated detonations of white dwarfs.
