The SVOM gamma-ray burst mission

We briefly present the science capabilities, the instruments, the operations, and the expected performance of the SVOM mission. SVOM (Space-based multiband astronomical Variable Objects Monitor) is a Chinese-French space mission dedicated to the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the next decade. The SVOM mission encompasses a satellite carrying four instruments to detect and localize the prompt GRB emission and measure the evolution of the afterglow in the visible band and in X-rays, a VHF communication system enabling the fast transmission of SVOM alerts to the ground, and a ground segment including a wide angle camera and two follow-up telescopes. The pointing strategy of the satellite has been optimized to favor the detection of GRBs located in the night hemisphere. This strategy enables the study of the optical emission in the first minutes after the GRB with robotic observatories and the early spectroscopy of the optical afterglow with large telescopes to measure the redshifts. The study of GRBs in the next decade will benefit from a number of large facilities in all wavelengths that will contribute to increase the scientific return of the mission. Finally, SVOM will operate in the era of the next generation of gravitational wave detectors, greatly contributing to searches for the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave triggers at Xray and gamma-ray energies.

The Tracy-Widom law for the Largest Eigenvalue of F Type Matrix

Let $\mathbb{A}_p=\frac{\mathbb{Y}\mathbb{Y}^*}{m}$ and $\mathbb{B}_p=\frac{\mathbb{X}\mathbb{X}^*}{n}$ be two independent random matrices where $\mathbb{X}=(X_{ij})_{p \times n}$ and $\mathbb{Y}=(Y_{ij})_{p \times m}$ respectively consist of real (or complex) independent random variables with $\mathbb{E}X_{ij}=\mathbb{E}Y_{ij}=0$, $\mathbb{E}|X_{ij}|^2=\mathbb{E}|Y_{ij}|^2=1$. Denote by $λ_{1}$ the largest root of the determinantal equation $\det(λ\mathbb{A}_p-\mathbb{B}_p)=0$. We establish the Tracy-Widom type universality for $λ_{1}$ under some moment conditions on $X_{ij}$ and $Y_{ij}$ when $p/m$ and $p/n$ approach positive constants as $p\rightarrow\infty$.

Large and robust electrical spin injection into GaAs at zero magnetic field using an ultrathin CoFeB/MgO injector

We demonstrate a large electrical spin injection into GaAs at zero magnetic field thanks to an ultrathin perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB contact of a few atomic planes (1.2 nm). The spin-polarization of electrons injected into GaAs was examined by the circular polarization of electroluminescence from a Spin Light Emitting Diode with embedded InGaAs/GaAs quantum wells. The electroluminescence polarization as a function of the magnetic field closely traces the out-of-plane magnetization of the CoFeB/MgO injector. A circular polarization degree of the emitted light as large as 20% at 25 K is achieved at zero magnetic field. Moreover the electroluminescence circular polarization is still about 8% at room temperature.

First order phase transition in the frustrated triangular antiferromagnet CsNiCl3

By means of high-resolution ultrasonic velocity measurements, as a function of temperature and magnetic field, the nature of the different low temperatures magnetic phase transitions observed for the quasi-one-dimensional compound CsNiCl3 is established. Special attention has been devoted to the field-induced 120 degree phase transition above the multicritical point in the H-T phase diagram where the elastic constant C44 reveals a step-like variation and hysteresis effects. These results represent the first experimental evidence that the 120 degree phase transition is weakly first order and contradict the popular notion of new universality classes for chiral systems.
