Non-Hermitian-enhanced quantum sensing in an optical interferometer

The precision of quantum parameter estimation is traditionally constrained by the quantum Cramér-Rao bound, which is based on the Hermitian measurement framework. Recent studies of non-Hermitian systems have suggested new possibilities for enhancing parameter-estimation sensitivity. Here, we experimentally realize quantum parameter estimation using a non-Hermitian observable on a linear optical platform. The parameter is encoded in single-photon probe states and read out with a Sagnac interferometer, which allows us to reconstruct the complex expectation value of the implemented non-Hermitian observable from interference fringes. We observe a reduced error-propagation variance compared with the optimal Hermitian observable for the same probe-state model. This advantage remains visible under amplitude-damping noise. We further analyze the complete optical measurement as a physical positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) and show, through the corresponding classical Fisher information (CFI), that the observed non-Hermitian advantage is consistent with the standard quantum metrological limit when all output ports are included. Our results provide an experimental route to non-Hermitian observable readout and clarify its operational meaning in quantum sensing.

Calibration and performance of the STAR Muon Telescope Detector using cosmic rays

We report the timing and spatial resolution from the Muon Telescope Detector (MTD) installed in the STAR experiment at RHIC. Cosmic ray muons traversing the STAR detector have an average transverse momentum of 6 GeV/c. Due to their very small multiple scattering, these cosmic muons provide an ideal tool to calibrate the detectors and measure their timing and spatial resolution. The values obtained were ~100 ps and ~1-2 cm, respectively. These values are comparable to those obtained from cosmic-ray bench tests and test beams.

Self-guiding of 100 TW Femtosecond Laser Pulses in Centimeter-scale Underdense Plasma

An experiment for studying laser self-guiding has been carried out for the high power ultrashort pulse laser interaction with an underdense plasma slab. Formation of an extremely long plasma channel and its bending are observed when the laser pulse power is much higher than the critical power for relativistic self-focusing. The long self-guiding channel formation is accompanied by electron acceleration with a low transverse emittance and high electric current. Particle-in-cell simulations show that laser bending occurs when the accelerated electrons overtake the laser pulse and modify the refractive index in the region in front of the laser pulse.
