Direct Determination of Spin-Splitting Energy in Magnetic Graphene by Landau Fan Shifts

Spin-polarized two-dimensional materials with large and tunable spin-splitting energy promise the field of 2D spintronics. While graphene has been a canonical 2D material, its spin properties and tunability are limited. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of robust spin-polarization in graphene with large and tunable spin-splitting energy of up to 132 meV at zero applied magnetic fields. The spin polarization is induced through a magnetic exchange interaction between graphene and the underlying ferrimagnetic oxide insulating layer, Tm3Fe5O12, as confirmed by its X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The spin-splitting energies are directly measured and visualized by the shift in their landau fan diagram mapped by analyzing the measured subnikov-de-Haas oscillations as a function of applied electric fields, showing consistent fit with our first-principles and machine learning calculations. Further, the observed spin-splitting energies can be tuned over a broad range between 98 and 166 meV by cooling fields. Our methods and results are applicable to other two-dimensional (magnetic) materials and heterostructures, and offer great potential for developing next-generation spin logic and memory devices.

General Exceptional Points

Exceptional points are interesting physical phenomena in non-Hermitian physics at which the eigenvalues are degenerate and the eigenvectors coalesce. In this paper, we find that the universal feature of arbitrary non-Hermitian two level systems with singularities is basis defectiveness rather than energy degeneracy or state coalescence. This leads to the discovery of general exceptional points (GEPs). For GEPs, more subtle structures (e.g., Bloch peach), additional classification, and' 'hidden" quantum phase transitions are explored. By using the topologically protected subspace from two edge states in the non-Hermitian SSH model as an example, we illustrate the physical properties of different types of GEPs.

Magnetism in MoS2 induced by MeV proton irradiation

Molybdenum disulphide, a diamagnetic layered dichalcogenide solid, is found to show magnetic ordering at room temperature when exposed to a 2 MeV proton beam. The temperature dependence of magnetization displays ferrimagnetic behavior with a Curie temperature of 895 K. A disorder mode corresponding to a zone-edge phonon and a Mo valence higher than +4, have been detected in the irradiated samples using Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The possible origins of long-range magnetic ordering in irradiated MoS2 samples are discussed.

The Control of a Beamline Over Intranet

The machines and beamlines controlled by VME industrial networks are very popular in accelerator faculties. Recently new software technology, among of which are Internet/Intranet application, Java language, and distributed calculating environment, changes the control manner rapidly. A program based on DCOM is composed to control of a variable included angle spherical grating monochromator beamline at National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) in China. The control computer with a residential DCOM program is connected to Intranet by LAN, over which the user-end-operating program located in another computer sends driving beamline units' commands to the control computer. And also a web page coded in Java, published by the WWW service running in the control computer, is simply illustrated how to use web browser to query the states of or to control the beamline units.
