High-power ultrafast Yb:fiber laser frequency combs using commercially available components and basic fiber tools

We present a detailed description of the design, construction, and performance of high-power ultrafast Yb:fiber laser frequency combs in operation in our laboratory. We discuss two such laser systems: an 87 MHz, 9 W, 85 fs laser operating at 1060 nm and an 87 MHz, 80 W, 155 fs laser operating at 1035 nm. Both are constructed using low-cost, commercially available components, and can be assembled using only basic tools for cleaving and splicing single-mode fibers. We describe practical methods for achieving and characterizing low-noise single-pulse operation and long-term stability from Yb:fiber oscillators based on nonlinear polarization evolution. Stabilization of the combs using a variety of transducers, including a new method for tuning the carrier-envelope offset frequency, is discussed. High average power is achieved through chirped-pulse amplification in simple fiber amplifiers based on double-clad photonic crystal fibers. We describe the use of these combs in several applications, including ultrasensitive femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy and cavity-enhanced high-order harmonic generation.

First-principles study of the stability of free-standing germanene in oxygen

The O2 dissociation and O atoms adsorption on free-standing germanene are studied by using first-principles calculations in this letter. Compared with the spontaneous dissociation of oxygen molecule on free-standing silicene in air, germanene is more stable than silicene from kinetic point of view, with overcoming energy barrier of about 0.55 eV. Especially, in contrast with the unique chemical adsorption of O2-dissociation-induced O atoms on silicene, oxygen molecule can behave a correspondingly stable adsorption on germanene surface. Moreover, single O atom adsorption on germanene is also different to that on silicene, resulting in two opposite migration pathways on germanene surface. Furthermore, once the oxygen molecule dissociates into O atoms on germanene surface, the migration and desorption of O atoms are relatively difficult under room temperature due to the strong Ge-O bonds in the O-adsorbed germanene, in favor of forming germanium oxides. The results provide compelling evidence to show that free-standing gemanene is relatively stable in oxygen, which is different to silicene essentially.

Nodeless superconductivity in Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Te$_2$ with strong spin-orbital coupling

The thermal conductivity $κ$ of superconductor Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$Te$_2$ ($x$ = 0.05) single crystal with strong spin-orbital coupling was measured down to 50 mK. The residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible in zero magnetic field. In low magnetic field, $κ_0/T$ shows a slow field dependence. These results demonstrate that the superconducting gap of Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$Te$_2$ is nodeless, and the pairing symmetry is likely conventional s-wave, despite the existence of strong spin-orbital coupling and a quantum critical point.

Nodal gap in iron-based superconductor CsFe$_2$As$_2$ probed by quasiparticle heat transport

The thermal conductivity of iron-based superconductor CsFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal ($T_c =$ 1.81 K) was measured down to 50 mK. A significant residual linear term $κ_0/T$ = 1.27 mW K$^{-2}$ cm$^{-1}$ is observed in zero magnetic field, which is about 1/10 of the normal-state value in upper critical field $H_{c2}$. In low magnetic field, $κ_0/T$ increases rapidly with field. The overall field dependence of $κ_0/T$ for our CsFe$_2$As$_2$ (with residual resistivity $ρ_0$ = 1.80 $μΩ$ cm) lies between the dirty KFe$_2$As$_2$ (with $ρ_0$ = 3.32 $μΩ$ cm) and the clean KFe$_2$As$_2$ (with $ρ_0$ = 0.21 $μΩ$ cm). These results strongly suggest nodal superconducting gap in CsFe$_2$As$_2$, similar to its sister compound KFe$_2$As$_2$.

Performance of a 967 nm CW diode end-pumped Er:GSGG laser at 2.79 Micrometer

We demonstrated a 967 nm diode end-pumped Er:GSGG laser operated at 2.794 Micrometer with spectrum width 3.6 nm in the continuous wave(CW) mode. The maximum output power of 440 mW is obtained at an incident pumping power of 3.4 W, which corresponds to an optical-to-optical efficiency of 13% and slope efficiency of 13.2%. The results suggest that short cavity and efficient cooling setup for crystal are advantageous to improve laser performance.

Nodeless superconductivity in Ca3Ir4Sn13: evidence from quasiparticle heat transport

We report resistivity $ρ$ and thermal conductivity $κ$ measurements on Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ single crystals, in which superconductivity with $T_c \approx 7$ K was claimed to coexist with ferromagnetic spin-fluctuations. Among three crystals, only one crystal shows a small hump in resistivity near 20 K, which was previously attributed to the ferromagnetic spin-fluctuations. Other two crystals show the $ρ\sim T^2$ Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperature. For both single crystals with and without the resistivity anomaly, the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible in zero magnetic field. In low fields, $κ_0(H)/T$ shows a slow field dependence. These results demonstrate that the superconducting gap of Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ is nodeless, thus rule out nodal gap caused by ferromagnetic spin-fluctuations.

Evidence for nodeless superconducting gap in NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As from low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements

The thermal conductivity of optimally doped NaFe$_{0.972}$Co$_{0.028}$As ($T_c \sim$ 20 K) and overdoped NaFe$_{0.925}$Co$_{0.075}$As ($T_c \sim$ 11 K) single crystals were measured down to 50 mK. No residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is found in zero magnetic field for both compounds, which is an evidence for nodeless superconducting gap. Applying field up to $H$ = 9 T ($\approx H_{c2}/4$) does not noticeably increase $κ_0/T$ in NaFe$_{1.972}$Co$_{0.028}$As, which is consistent with multiple isotropic gaps with similar magnitudes. The $κ_0/T$ of overdoped NaFe$_{1.925}$Co$_{0.075}$As shows a relatively faster field dependence, indicating the increase of the ratio between the magnitudes of different gaps, or the enhancement of gap anisotropy upon increasing doping.

New Insights into Traffic Dynamics: A Weighted Probabilistic Cellular Automaton Model

From the macroscopic viewpoint for describing the acceleration behavior of drivers, this letter presents a weighted probabilistic cellular automaton model (the WP model, for short) by introducing a kind of random acceleration probabilistic distribution function. The fundamental diagrams, the spatio-temporal pattern are analyzed in detail. It is shown that the presented model leads to the results consistent with the empirical data rather well, nonlinear velocity-density relationship exists in lower density region, and a new kind of traffic phenomenon called neo-synchronized flow is resulted. Furthermore, we give the criterion for distinguishing the high-speed and low-speed neo-synchronized flows and clarify the mechanism of this kind of traffic phenomena. In addition, the result that the time evolution of distribution of headways is displayed as a normal distribution further validates the reasonability of the neo-synchronized flow. These findings suggest that the diversity and randomicity of drivers and vehicles has indeed remarkable effect on traffic dynamics.

Reliability of the Estimation of CP Asymmetries for Nonleptonic $B^{0} - \bar{B}^{0}$ Decays into Non-CP-Eigen states

CP asymmetries for two-body-nonleptonic $B^{0} - \bar{B}^{0}$ decay into non-CP-eigen states are calculated using two different methods: (i) Bauer, Stech, and Wirbel factorization method to compute the decay amplitudes directly; (ii) using $B^{0}, \bar{B}^{0}$ decay amplitude ratios to avoid the direct computation of the decay amplitudes. The comparison of the results are made. The conclusion is presented.
