Density Limit Experiments and Core-localized Kinetic MHD Activities in HL-2A Ohmic Heating Plasmas

The density limit is a mysterious barrier to magnetic confinement nuclear fusion, and is still an unresolved issue. In this paper, we will present the experimental results of the density limit and core-localized kinetic MHD instabilities on HL-2A. Firstly, the high density shots with $ne/ne_G>1$ have been achieved by the conventional gas-puff fuelling method in Ohmic heating plasmas, and the corresponding duration time is close to $t\sim500$ ms ($\sim$ $30τ_E$), where $τ_E$ is the global energy confinement time. Secondly, it is found for the first time that there are kinetic MHD instabilities in the core plasmas while $ne/ne_G\sim1$. The analysis suggests that the core-localized MHD activities belong to Alfv{é}nic ion temperature gradient (AITG) modes or kinetic ballooning modes (KBM), and firstly it is found on experiment that they trigger the minor or major disruption of bulk plasmas while the density profile is peaked. These new findings are of great importance to figure out and understand the origin of the density limit.

X-ray morphology due to charge-exchange emissions used to study the global structure around Mars

Soft x-ray emissions induced by solar wind ions that collide with neutral material in the solar system have been detected around planets, and were proposed as a remote probe for the solar wind interaction with the Martian exosphere. A multi-fluid three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic model is adopted to derive the global distributions of solar wind particles. Spherically symmetric exospheric H, H$_2$, He, O, and CO$_2$ density profiles and a sophisticated hybrid model that includes charge-exchange and proton/neutral excitation processes are used to study the low triplet line ratio $G=\frac{i+f}{r}$ (0.77$\pm$0.58) of O VII and total x-ray luminosity around Mars. We further calculate the emission factor $α$-value with different neutrals over a wide ion abundance and velocity ranges. Our results are in good agreement with those of previous reports. The evolution of the charge stage of solar wind ions shows that sequential recombination due to charge-exchange can be negligible at the interaction region. This only appears below the altitude of 400~km. The anonymous low disk $G$ ratio can be easily explained by the collisional quenching effect at neutral densities higher than 10$^{11}$cm$^{-3}$. However, the quenching contribution is small in Mars' exosphere and only appears below 400~km. Charge-exchange with H$_2$ and N$_2$ is still the most likely reason for this low $G$-ratio. X-ray emissivity maps in collisions with different neutrals differ from each other. A clear bow shock in the collision with all the neutrals is in accordance with previous reports. The resulting total x-ray luminosity of 6.55~MW shows a better agreement with the XMM-Newton observation of 12.8$\pm$1.4~MW than that of previous predictions.

Measurement of n-resolved State-Selective Charge Exchange in Ne(8,9)+ Collision with He and H2

Charge exchange between highly charged ions and neutral atoms and molecules has been considered as one of the important mechanisms controlling soft X ray emissions in many astrophysical objects and environments. However, for modeling charge exchange soft X ray emission, the data of n and l resolved state selective capture cross sections are often obtained by empirical and semiclassical theory calculations. With a newly built cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) apparatus, we perform a series of measurements of the charge exchange of Ne(8,9)+ ions with He and H2 for collision energy ranging from 1 to 24.75 keV/u. n resolved state selective capture cross-sections are reported. By comparing the measured state selective capture cross sections to those calculated by the multichannel Landau Zener method (MCLZ), it is found that MCLZ calculations are in good agreement with the measurement for the dominant n capture for He target. Furthermore, by using nl resolved cross sections calculated by MCLZ and applying l distributions commonly used in the astrophysical literature to experimentally derived n resolved cross sections, we calculate the soft X ray emissions in the charge exchange between 4 keV/u Ne8+ and He by considering the radiative cascade from the excited Ne7+ ions. Reasonable agreement is found in comparison to the measurement for even and separable models, and MCLZ calculations give results in a better agreement.

State-selective single-electron capture in 30 keV N3+-He collisions

The Cold-target recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) has been employed to study the single-electron capture processes in collisions of N3+ ions with He atoms at an impact energy of 30 keV. The relative differential cross sections for the capture to different orbitals of N3+ ions are obtained and are compared with other experiments at low energy. The predictions of the molecular Columbic barrier model have been made. From the longitudinal momentum spectrum of recoil ions, the different electronic configuration was identified and the metastable projectile ions were distinguished. The single electron capture into the N2+ (1s22s22p 2P) state from the ground state N3+ (1s22s2 1S) projectile is the dominant reaction channel. The fraction of the metastable state N3+(2s2p 3P) of the incident projectile beam is about 46%.

Calibration and performance of the STAR Muon Telescope Detector using cosmic rays

We report the timing and spatial resolution from the Muon Telescope Detector (MTD) installed in the STAR experiment at RHIC. Cosmic ray muons traversing the STAR detector have an average transverse momentum of 6 GeV/c. Due to their very small multiple scattering, these cosmic muons provide an ideal tool to calibrate the detectors and measure their timing and spatial resolution. The values obtained were ~100 ps and ~1-2 cm, respectively. These values are comparable to those obtained from cosmic-ray bench tests and test beams.

Mutual ionization in atomic collisions near the electronic threshold

We study mutual ionization in collisions between atomic hydrogen and helium at impact velocities near the electronic threshold for this process (determined by the condition that kinetic energy of an equivelocity free electron is approximately equal to the sum of binding energies of active electrons in the projectile and target). We show that this process is substantially influenced by the Coulomb repulsion between the emitted electrons and that the atomic nuclei are very strongly involved in the momentum balance along the collision velocity.

Longitudinal Schottky spectra of a bunched Ne10+ ion beam at the CSRe

The longitudinal Schottky spectra of a radio-frequency (RF) bunched and electron cooled 22Ne10+ ion beam at 70 MeV/u have been studied by a newly installed resonant Schottky pick-up at the experimental cooler storage ring (CSRe), at IMP. For an RF-bunched ion beam, a longitudinal momentum spread of has been reached with less than 107 stored ions. The reduction of momentum spread compared with coasting ion beam was observed from Schottky noise signal of the bunched ion beam. In order to prepare the future laser cooling experiment at the CSRe, the RF-bunching power was modulated at 25th, 50th and 75th harmonic of the revolution frequency, effective bunching amplitudes were extracted from the Schottky spectrum analysis. Applications of Schottky noise for measuring beam lifetime with ultra-low intensity of ion beams are presented, and it is relevant to upcoming experiments on laser cooling of relativistic heavy ion beams and nuclear physics at the CSRe.
