Acrylic Target Vessels for a High-Precision Measurement of theta13 with the Daya Bay Antineutrino Detectors

This paper describes in detail the acrylic target vessels used to encapsulate the target and gamma catcher regions in the Daya Bay experiment's first pair of antineutrino detectors. We give an overview of the design, fabrication, shipping, and installation of the acrylic target vessels and their liquid overflow tanks. The acrylic quality assurance program and vessel characterization, which measures all geometric, optical, and material properties relevant to νe detection at Daya Bay are summarized. This paper is the technical reference for the Daya Bay acrylic vessels and can provide guidance in the design and use of acrylic components in future neutrino or dark matter experiments.

Beam-Target Double Spin Asymmetry A_LT in Charged Pion Production from Deep Inelastic Scattering on a Transversely Polarized He-3 Target at 1.4<Q^2<2.7 GeV^2

We report the first measurement of the double-spin asymmetry $A_{LT}$ for charged pion electroproduction in semi\nobreakdash-inclusive deep\nobreakdash-inelastic electron scattering on a transversely polarized $^{3}$He target. The kinematics focused on the valence quark region, $0.16<x<0.35$ with $1.4<Q^{2}<2.7\,\textrm{GeV}^{2}$. The corresponding neutron $A_{LT}$ asymmetries were extracted from the measured $^{3}$He asymmetries and proton over $^{3}$He cross section ratios using the effective polarization approximation. These new data probe the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function $g_{1T}^{q}$ and therefore provide access to quark spin-orbit correlations. Our results indicate a positive azimuthal asymmetry for $π^{-}$ production on $^{3}$He and the neutron, while our $π^{+}$ asymmetries are consistent with zero.

Strong Substrate Dependence of Joule Heating in Graphene

The Joule heating effect on graphene electronic properties is investigated by using full-band Monte Carlo electron dynamics and three-dimensional heat transfer simulations self-consistently. A number of technologically important substrate materials are examined: SiO2, SiC, hexagonal BN, and diamond. The results illustrate that the choice of substrate has a major impact via the heat conduction and surface polar phonon scattering. Particularly, it is found that the poor thermal conductivity of SiO2 leads to significant Joule heating and saturation velocity degradation in graphene (characterized by the so-called 1/\surd n decay). Considering the overall characteristics, BN appears to compare favorably against other substrate choices for graphene in electronic applications.

Electron Transport Properties of Bilayer Graphene

Electron transport in bilayer graphene is studied by using a first principles analysis and theMonte Carlo simulation under conditions relevant to potential applications. While the intrinsic properties are found to be much less desirable in bilayer than in monolayer graphene, with significantly reduced mobilities and saturation velocities, the calculation also reveals the dominant influence of extrinsic factors such as the substrate and impurities. Accordingly, the difference between two graphene forms are more muted in realistic settings although the velocity-field characteristics remain substantially lower in the bilayer. When bilayer graphene is subject to an interlayer bias, the resulting changes in the energy dispersion lead to stronger electron scattering at the bottom of the conduction band. The mobility decreases significantly with the size of the generated bandgap, whereas the saturation velocity remains largely unaffected.

Single Spin Asymmetries in Charged Pion Production from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on a Transversely Polarized $^3$He Target

We report the first measurement of target single spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive $^3{He}(e,e'π^\pm)X$ reaction on a transversely polarized target. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.9 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 0.14 $< x <$ 0.34 with 1.3 $<Q^2<$ 2.7 GeV$^2$. The Collins and Sivers moments were extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the measured asymmetries. The extracted $π^\pm$ Collins moments for $^3$He are consistent with zero, except for the $π^+$ moment at $x=0.34$, which deviates from zero by 2.3$σ$. While the $π^-$ Sivers moments are consistent with zero, the $π^+$ Sivers moments favor negative values. The neutron results were extracted using the nucleon effective polarization and the measured cross section ratio of proton to $^3$He, and are largely consistent with the predictions of phenomenological fits and quark model calculations.

Stochastic local operations and classical communication equations and classification of even $n$ qubits

For any even $n$ qubits we establish four SLOCC equations and construct four SLOCC polynomials (not complete) of degree $2^{n/2}$, which can be exploited for SLOCC classification (not complete) of any even $n$ qubits. In light of the SLOCC equations, we propose several different genuine entangled states of even $n$ qubits and show that they are inequivalent to the $|GHZ>$, $|W>$, or $|l,n>$ (the symmetric Dicke states with $l$ excitations) under SLOCC via the vanishing or not of the polynomials. The absolute values of the polynomials can be considered as entanglement measures.

Achievable Transverse Cylindrical Electromagnetic Mode

The system of Maxwell equations with an initial condition in a vacuum is solved in a cylindrical coordinate system. It derives the cylindrical transverse electromagnetic wave mode in which the electric field and magnetic field are not in phase. Such electromagnetic wave can generate and exist in actual application, and there is no violation of the law of conservation of energy during the electromagnetic field interchanges.

Electron-Phonon Interactions in Bilayer Graphene: A First Principles Approach

Density functional perturbation theory is used to analyze electron-phonon interaction in bilayer graphene. The results show that phonon scattering in bilayer graphene bears more resemblance with bulk graphite than monolayer graphene. In particular, electron-phonon scattering in the lowest conduction band is dominated by six lowest (acoustic and acoustic-like) phonon branches with only minor contributions from optical modes. The total scattering rate at low/moderate electron energies can be described by a simple two-phonon model in the deformation potential approximation with effective constants Dac $\approx$ 15 eV and Dop $\approx 2.8 \times 108$ eV/cm for acoustic and optical phonons, respectively. With much enhanced acoustic phonon scattering, the low field mobility of bilayer graphene is expected to be significantly smaller than that of monolayer graphene.

Surface Polar Phonon Dominated Electron Transport in Graphene

The effects of surface polar phonons on electronic transport properties of monolayer graphene are studied by using a Monte Carlo simulation. Specifically, the low-field electron mobility and saturation velocity are examined for different substrates (SiC, SiO2, and HfO2) in comparison to the intrinsic case. While the results show that the low-field mobility can be substantially reduced by the introduction of surface polar phonon scattering, corresponding degradation of the saturation velocity is not observed for all three substrates at room temperature. It is also found that surface polar phonons can influence graphene electrical resistivity even at low temperature, leading potentially to inaccurate estimation of the acoustic phonon deformation potential constant.

A New Measurement of the $π^0$ Radiative Decay Width

High precision measurements of the differential cross sections for $π^0$ photoproduction at forward angles for two nuclei, $^{12}$C and $^{208}$Pb, have been performed for incident photon energies of 4.9 - 5.5 GeV to extract the ${π^0 \to γγ}$ decay width. The experiment was done at Jefferson Lab using the Hall B photon tagger and a high-resolution multichannel calorimeter. The ${π^0 \to γγ}$ decay width was extracted by fitting the measured cross sections using recently updated theoretical models for the process. The resulting value for the decay width is $Γ{(π^0 \to γγ)} = 7.82 \pm 0.14 ~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.17 ~({\rm syst.}) ~{\rm eV}$. With the 2.8% total uncertainty, this result is a factor of 2.5 more precise than the current PDG average of this fundamental quantity and it is consistent with current theoretical predictions.

Influence of Carrier-Carrier Scattering on Electron Transport in Monolayer Graphene

The influence of electron-electron scattering on the distribution function and transport characteristics of intrinsic monolayer graphene is investigated via an ensemble Monte Carlo simulation. Due to the linear dispersion relation in the vicinity of the Dirac points, it is found that pair-wise collisions in graphene do not conserve the ensemble average velocity in contrast to conventional semiconductors with parabolic energy bands. Numerical results indicate that electron-electron scattering can lead to a decrease in the low field mobility by more than 80% for moderate electron densities. At high densities, the impact gradually diminishes due to increased degeneracy.

Relationship between the n-tangle and the residual entanglement of even n qubits

We show that $n$-tangle, the generalization of the 3-tangle to even $n$ qubits, is the square of the SLOCC polynomial invariant of degree 2. We find that the $n$-tangle is not the residual entanglement for any even $n\geq 4$\ qubits. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing of the concurrence $C_{1(2...n)}$. The condition implies that the concurrence $% C_{1(2...n)}$ is always positive for any entangled states while the $n$% -tangle vanishes for some entangled states. We argue that for even $n$\ qubits, the concurrence $C_{1(2...n)}$\ is equal to or greater than the $n$% -tangle. Further,\ we reveal that the residual entanglement is a partial measure for product states of any $n$ qubits while the $n$-tangle is multiplicative for some product states.

Streamer Waves Driven by Coronal Mass Ejections

Between July 5th and July 7th 2004, two intriguing fast coronal mass ejection(CME)-streamer interaction events were recorded by the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO). At the beginning of the events, the streamer was pushed aside from their equilibrium position upon the impact of the rapidly outgoing and expanding ejecta; then, the streamer structure, mainly the bright streamer belt, exhibited elegant large scale sinusoidal wavelike motions. The motions were apparently driven by the restoring magnetic forces resulting from the CME impingement, suggestive of magnetohydrodynamic kink mode propagating outwards along the plasma sheet of the streamer. The mode is supported collectively by the streamer-plasma sheet structure and is therefore named "streamer wave" in the present study. With the white light coronagraph data, we show that the streamer wave has a period of about 1 hour, a wavelength varying from 2 to 4 solar radii, an amplitude of about a few tens of solar radii, and a propagating phase speed in the range 300 to 500 km s$^{-1}$. We also find that there is a tendancy for the phase speed to decline with increasing heliocentric distance. These observations provide good examples of large scale wave phenomena carried by coronal structures, and have significance in developing seismological techniques for diagnosing plasma and magnetic parameters in the outer corona.

Performance of Equal Phase-Shift Search for One Iteration

Grover presented the phase-shift search by replacing the selective inversions by selective phase shifts of $π/3$. In this paper, we investigate the phase-shift search with general equal phase shifts. We show that for small uncertainties, the failure probability of the Phase-$π/3$ search is smaller than the general phase-shift search and for large uncertainties, the success probability of the large phase-shift search is larger than the Phase-$π/3$ search. Therefore, the large phase-shift search is suitable for large-size of databases.

SLOCC classification for nine families of four-qubits

In Phys. Rev. A 62, 062314 (2000), Dür, Vidal and Cirac indicated that there are infinitely many SLOCC classes for four qubits. Verstraete, Dehaene, and Verschelde in Phys. Rev. A 65, 052112 (2002) proposed nine families of states corresponding to nine different ways of entangling four qubits. In Phys. Rev. A 75, 022318 (2007), Lamata et al. reported that there are eight true SLOCC entanglement classes of four qubits up to permutations of the qubits. In this paper, we investigate SLOCC classification of the nine families proposed by Verstraete, Dehaene and Verschelde, and distinguish 49 true SLOCC entanglement classes from them.

Kinematics in Randers-Finsler geometry and secular increase of the astronomical unit

Kinematics in Finsler space is investigated. It is showed that the result based on the kinematics with a special Finsler structure is in good agreement with the reported value of secular trend in the astronomical unit, $d{\rm AU}/dt=15\pm4[{\rm m/century}]$. The space deformation parameter $λ$ in this special structure is very small with scale of $10^{-6}$ and should be a constant. This fact is consistent with the reported value of an anomalous secular eccentricity variation of the Moon's orbit.
