Commensurate-incommensurate transition for graphene on hexagonal boron nitride

When a crystal is subjected to a periodic potential, under certain circumstances (such as when the period of the potential is close to the crystal periodicity; the potential is strong enough, etc.) it might adjust itself to follow the periodicity of the potential, resulting in a, so called, commensurate state. Such commensurate-incommensurate transitions are ubiquitous phenomena in many areas of condensed matter physics: from magnetism and dislocations in crystals, to vortices in superconductors, and atomic layers adsorbed on a crystalline surface. Of particular interest might be the properties of topological defects between the two commensurate phases: solitons, domain walls, and dislocation walls. Here we report a commensurate-incommensurate transition for graphene on top of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Depending on the rotational angle between the two hexagonal lattices, graphene can either stretch to adjust to a slightly different hBN periodicity (the commensurate state found for small rotational angles) or exhibit little adjustment (the incommensurate state). In the commensurate state, areas with matching lattice constants are separated by domain walls that accumulate the resulting strain. Such soliton-like objects present significant fundamental interest, and their presence might explain recent observations when the electronic, optical, Raman and other properties of graphene-hBN heterostructures have been notably altered.

Anisotropic transport and magnetic properties, and magnetic-field tuned states of CeZn11 single crystals

We present detailed temperature and field dependent data obtained from magnetization, resistivity, heat capacity, Hall resistivity and thermoelectric power measurements performed on single crystals of CeZn11. The compounds orders antiferromagnetically at $\sim$ 2 K. The zero-field resistivity and TEP data show features characteristic of a Ce-based intermetallic with crystal electric field splitting and possible correlated, Kondo lattice effects. We constructed the T-H phase diagram for the magnetic field applied along the easy, [110], direction which shows that the magnetic field required to suppress T_N below 0.4 K is in the range of 45-47.5 kOe. A linear behavior of the rho(T) data, H||[110], was observed only for H=45 kOe for 0.46 K<T<1.96 K followed by the Landau-Fermi-liquid regime for a limited range of fields, 47.5 kOe< H<60 kOe. From the analysis of our data, it appears that CeZn11 is a weakly to moderately correlated local moment compound with rather small Kondo temperature. The thermoelectric and transport properties of CeZn11 are mostly governed by the CEF effects. Given the very high quality of our single crystals, quantum oscillations are found for both CeZn11 and its non-magnetic analogue, LaZn11.

Controllable operation for distant qubits in a two-dimensional quantum network

We propose a theoretical scheme to realize the coherent coupling of multiple atoms in a quantum network which is composed of a two-dimensional (2D) array of coupled cavities. In the scheme, the pairing off-resonant Raman transitions of different atoms, induced by the cavity modes and external fields, can lead to selective coupling between arbitrary atoms trapped in separated cavities. Based on this physical mechanism, quantum gates between any pair of qubits and parallel two-qubit operations can be performed in the 2D system. The scheme provides a new perspective for coherent manipulation of quantum systems in 2D quantum networks.

Magnetic phase diagram in the Co-rich side of LnCo1-xFexAsO (Ln=La, Sm) system

The magnetic phase diagram has been mapped out via the measurements of electronic resistivity, magnetization and specific heat in the cobalt-based layered LnCo1-xFexAsO (Ln=La, Sm) compounds. The ferromagnetic (FM) transition at 63 K for LaCoAsO is rapidly suppressed upon Fe doping, and ultimately disappears around x=0.3 in the LaCo1-xFexAsO system. When La is replaced by magnetic rare earth element Sm, the 3d electrons first undergo a FM transition at Tc = 75 K, followed by an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at a lower temperature TN1 = 45 K. With partial Fe doping on the Co site, both FM (Tc) and AFM (TN1) transition temperatures are significantly suppressed, and finally approach zero kelvin at x = 0.3 and 0.2, respectively. Meanwhile, a third magnetic transition at TN2 = 5.6 K for SmCoAsO, associated with the AFM order of the Sm3+ 4f-oments, is uncovered and TN2 is found to be almost robust against the small Fe-doping. These results suggest that the 4f electrons of Sm3+ have an important effect on the magnetic behavior of 3d electrons in the 1111 type Co-based LnCo1-xFexAsO systems. In contrast, the magnetism of the f-electrons is relatively unaffected by the variation of the 3d electrons. The rich magnetic phase diagram in the Co-rich side of the LnCo1-xFexAsO system, therefore, is established.

Breakdown of the integer and fractional quantum Hall states in a quantum point contact

The integer and fractional quantum Hall states are known to break down at high dc bias, exhibiting deviation from the ideal incompressible behavior. We measure breakdown of the ν= 2, 3, 4, 5 integer and the ν= 4/3 and 5/3 fractional states in a quantum point contact (QPC) of lithographic width ~600 nm. Dependence of the critical current on magnetic field, QPC gate voltage, and QPC width are presented. Of particular interest, the critical current of the 4/3 and 5/3 fractional states shows the opposite dependence on QPC width compared to the integer states. This previously unobserved result is not explained by current theories of breakdown.

Measurements of quasi-particle tunneling in the nu = 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state

Some models of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state predict that the quasi-particles, which carry the charge, have non-Abelian statistics: exchange of two quasi-particles changes the wave function more dramatically than just the usual change of phase factor. Such non-Abelian statistics would make the system less sensitive to decoherence, making it a candidate for implementation of topological quantum computation. We measure quasi-particle tunneling as a function of temperature and DC bias between counter-propagating edge states. Fits to theory give e*, the quasi-particle effective charge, close to the expected value of e/4 and g, the strength of the interaction between quasi-particles, close to 3/8. Fits corresponding to the various proposed wave functions, along with qualitative features of the data, strongly favor the Abelian 331 state.

Phase diagram of CeVSb3 under pressure and its dependence on pressure conditions

We present temperature dependent resistivity and ac-calorimetry measurements of CeVSb3 under pressure up to 8 GPa in a Bridgman anvil cell modified to use a liquid medium and in a diamond anvil cell using argon as a pressure medium, respectively. We observe an initial increase of the ferromagnetic transition temperature Tc with pressures up to 4.5 GPa, followed by decrease of Tc on further increase of pressure and finally its disappearance, in agreement with the Doniach model. We infer a ferromagnetic quantum critical point around 7 GPa under hydrostatic pressure conditions from the extrapolation to 0 K of Tc and the maximum of the A coefficient from low temperature fits of the resistivity ρ(T)=ρ_{0}+AT^{n}. No superconductivity under pressure was observed down to 0.35 K for this compound. In addition, differences in the Tc(P) behavior when a slight uniaxial component is present are noticed and discussed and correlated to choice of pressure medium.

Electron-phonon coupling and charge gap in spin-density-wave iron-pnictides from quasiparticle relaxation dynamics

We investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in undoped SrFe_2As_2 exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) ordering using optical pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy. A remarkable critical slowing down of the quasiparticle relaxation dynamics at the SDW transition temperature T_SDW = 200K is observed. From temperature dependence of the transient reflectivity amplitude we determine the SDW-state charge gap magnitude, 2Delta_SDW/k_BT_SDW=7.2+-1. The second moment of the Eliashberg function, lambda<(hbar omega)^2>=110+-10meV^2, determined from the relaxation time above T_SDW, is similar to SmFeAsO and BaFe_2As_2 indicating a rather small electron phonon coupling constant unless the electron-phonon spectral function (alpha^2F(omega) is strongly enhanced in the low-energy phonon region.

Universal Decomposition of the Low-Frequency Conductivity Spectra of Iron-Pnictides Uncovering Fermi-Liquid Behavior

Infrared reflectivity measurements on 122 iron-pnictides reveal the existence of two electronic subsystems. The one gapped due to the spin-density-wave transition in the parent materials, such as EuFe$_2$As$_{2}$, is responsible for superconductivity in the doped compounds, like Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08})_2$As$_{2}$ and Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05})_2$As$_{2}$. Analyzing the dc resistivity and scattering rate of this contribution, a hidden $T^2$ dependence is found, indicating that superconductivity evolves out of a Fermi-liquid state. The second subsystem gives rise to incoherent background, present in all 122 compounds, which is basically temperature independent, but affected by the superconducting transition.

Superfluid density of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}M_x$)$_2$As$_2$ from optical experiments

The temperature dependence of the $ab$-plane optical reflectivity of Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08})_2$As$_{2}$ and Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05})_2$As$_{2}$ single crystals is measured in a wide spectral range. Upon entering the superconducting regime, the reflectivity in both compounds increases considerably at low frequency, leading to a clear gap in the optical conductivity below 100 cm$^{-1}$. From the analysis of the complex conductivity spectra we obtain the penetration depth $λ(T)=(3500\pm 350)$ Åfor Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08})_2$As$_{2}$ and $(3000\pm 300)$ Åfor Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05})_2$As$_{2}$. The calculated superfluid density $ρ_s$ of both compounds nicely fits the scaling relation $ρ_s=(125\pm 25)σ_{dc}T_c$.

Discovery of a binary icosahedral quasicrystal in Sc$_12$Zn$_88$

We report the discovery of a new binary icosahedral phase in a Sc-Zn alloy obtained through solution-growth, producing millimeter-sized, facetted, single grain, quasicrystals that exhibit different growth morphologies, pentagonal dodecahedra and rhombic triacontahedra, under only marginally different growth conditions. These two morphologies manifest different degrees of quasicrystalline order, or phason strain. The discovery of i-Sc$_12$Zn$_88$ suggests that a reexamination of binary phase diagrams at compositions close to crystalline approximant structures may reveal other, new binary quasicrystalline phases.

Influence of Ortho-H2 Clusters on the Mechanical Properties of Solid Para-H2

The quantum diffusion of ortho-H2 impurities in solid para-H2 has been investigated with a torsional oscillator technique. The unclustering dynamics of agglomerated impurities with increasing temperature are found to greatly affect the resonant period of oscillation. Based on the observed trends in both experimental data and complementary finite element calculations, we find that the oscillation period predominantly reflects changes in the solid's elastic response to the minute inertial stresses imposed on it. It is likely that the small but abrupt increase in the resonant period observed above 100 mK in high purity H2 samples is due to the interplay between remnant ortho-H2 impurities and dislocations, and not a signature of a supersolid to normal solid transition.

Nodeless superconducting gap in electron-doped BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_2$ probed by quasiparticle heat transport

The in-plane thermal conductivity $κ$ of electron-doped iron-arsenide superconductor BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 20.3 K) single crystal was measured down to 70 mK. In zero field, the absence of a residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at $ T \to 0$ is strong evidence for nodeless superconducting gap. In magnetic field, $κ_0/T$ shows a slow field dependence up to $H$ = 14.5 T ($\approx$ 30% $H_{c_2}$). This is consistent with the superconducting gap structure demonstrated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments in BaFe$_{1.85}$Co$_{0.15}$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 25.5 K), where isotropic superconducting gaps with similar size on hole and electron pockets were observed.

Supersolid behavior in confined geometry

We have carried out torsional oscillator (TO) and heat capacity (HC) measurements on solid 4He samples grown within a geometry which restricts the helium to thin (150 um) cylindrical discs. In contrast to previously reported values from Rittner and Reppy of 20% non-classical rotational inertia (NCRI) for similar confining dimensions, 0.9% NCRI (consistent with that found in bulk samples and samples imbedded in porous media) was observed in our TO cell. In this confined geometry the heat capacity peak is consistent with that found in bulk solid samples of high crystalline quality.

Heat capacity peak in solid 4He: Effects of disorder and 3He impurities

Heat capacity measurements with significantly improved resolution find the presence of a peak in a solid 4He sample in coexistence with liquid. With improved crystallinity, the peak decreases in height and moves to lower temperature. A hysteretic heat capacity signature consistent with 3He-4He phase separation, not detected in an earlier work is clearly observed.

Superconductivity induced by Ni doping in BaFe$_2$As$_2$

A series of 122 phase BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ ($x$ = 0, 0.055, 0.096, 0.18, 0.23) single crystals were grown by self flux method and a dome-like Ni doping dependence of superconducting transition temperature is discovered. The transition temperature $T_c^{on}$ reaches a maximum of 20.5 K at $x$ = 0.096, and it drops to below 4 K as $x$ $\geq$ 0.23. The negative thermopower in the normal state indicates that electron-like charge carrier indeed dominates in this system. This Ni-doped system provides another example of superconductivity induced by electron doping in the 122 phase.

Quantum well states in two-dimensional gold clusters on MgO thin films

The electronic structure of ultra-small Au clusters on thin MgO/Ag(001) films has been analyzed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy and density functional theory. The clusters exhibit two-dimensional (2D) quantum well states, whose shapes resemble the eigen-states of a 2D electron gas confined in a parabolic potential. From the symmetries of the HOMO and LUMO of a particular cluster, its electron filling and charge state is determined. In accordance to a DFT Bader-charge analysis, aggregates containing up to twenty atoms accumulate one to four extra electrons due to a charge transfer from the MgO/Ag interface. The HOMO - LUMO gap is found to close for clusters containing between 70 and 100 atoms.

Superconductivity induced by cobalt doping in iron-based oxyarsenides

Chemical doping has recently become a very important strategy to induce superconductivity especially in complex compounds. Distinguished examples include Ba-doped La$_2$CuO$_4$ (the first high temperature superconductor), K-doped BaBiO$_3$, K-doped C$_{60}$ and Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}\cdot y$H$_{2}$O. The most recent example is F-doped LaFeAsO, which leads to a new class of high temperature superconductors. One notes that all the above dopants are non-magnetic, because magnetic atoms generally break superconducting Cooper pairs. In addition, the doping site was out of the (super)conducting structural unit (layer or framework). Here we report that superconductivity was realized by doping magnetic element cobalt into the (super)conducting-active Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers in LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$AsO. At surprisingly small Co-doping level of $x$=0.025, the antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave transition in the parent compound is completely suppressed, and superconductivity with $T_c\sim $ 10 K emerges. With increasing Co content, $T_c$ shows a maximum of 13 K at $x\sim 0.075$, and then drops to below 2 K at $x$=0.15. This result suggests essential differences between previous cuprate superconductor and the present iron-based arsenide one.
