Sensitivity study of experimental measures for the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition in the statistical multifragmentation model

The experimental measures of the multiplicity derivatives, the moment parameters, the bimodal parameter, the fluctuation of maximum fragment charge number (NVZ), the Fisher exponent ($τ$) and Zipf's law parameter ($ξ$), are examined to search for the liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear multifragmention processes within the framework of the statistical multifragmentation model (SMM). The sensitivities of these measures are studied. All these measures predict a critical signature at or near to the critical point both for the primary and secondary fragments. Among these measures, the total multiplicity derivative and the NVZ provide accurate measures for the critical point from the final cold fragments as well as the primary fragments. The present study will provide a guide for future experiments and analyses in the study of nuclear liquid-gas phase transition.

Ultrafast Terahertz Conductivity Probes of Topologically Enhanced Surface Transport Driven by Mid-Infrared Laser Pulses in Bi$_2$Se$_3$

The recent discovery of topology-protected charge transport of ultimate thinness on surfaces of three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) are breaking new ground in fundamental quantum science and transformative technology. Yet a challenge remains on how to isolate and disentangle helical spin transport on the surface from bulk conduction. Here we show that selective midinfrared femtosecond photoexcitation of exclusive intraband electronic transitions at low temperature underpins topological enhancement of terahertz (THz) surface transport in doped Bi2Se3, with no complication from interband excitations or need for controlled doping. The unique, hot electron state is characterized by conserved populations of surface/bulk bands and by frequency-dependent hot carrier cooling times that directly distinguish the faster surface channel than the bulk. We determine the topological enhancement ratio between bulk and surface scattering rates, i.e., $γ_\text{BS}/γ_\text{SS}\sim$3.80 in equilibrium. These behaviors are absent at elevated lattice temperatures and for high pumpphoton frequencies and uences. The selective, mid-infrared-induced THz conductivity provides a new paradigm to characterize TIs and may apply to emerging topological semimetals in order to separate the transport connected with the Weyl nodes from other bulk bands.

Emergent antiferromagnetism of YTiO3 in YTiO3-CaTiO3 superlattices

Transport and magnetoresistance measurements are performed on metallic, high-carrier density YTiO3-CaTiO3 superlattices as a probe towards the investigation of an emergent magnetic order of YTiO3. On varying the thickness of YTiO3 while keeping the CaTiO3 layer thickness constant in the superlattices, a low-temperature upturn in sheet-resistance, a non-Fermi liquid-like charge transport and positive magnetoresistance are observed. Analyses of the origin of such effects suggest that a unique antiferromagnetic order is realized in the ultra-thin, epitaxially strained YTiO3 layers, which corroborates well with some recent theoretical predictions in this regard.

Quantitative characterization of the nanoscale local lattice strain induced by Sr dopants in La$_{1.92}$Sr$_{0.08}$CuO$_4$

The nanometer scale lattice deformation brought about by the dopants in high temperature superconducting cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$(x=0.08) was investigated by measuring the associated X-ray diffuse scattering around multiple Bragg peaks. A characteristic diffuse scattering pattern was observed, which can be well described by continuum elastic theory. With the fitted dipole force parameters, the acoustic type lattice deformation pattern was re-constructed and found to be of similar size to lattice thermal vibration at 7 K. Our results address the long-term concern of dopant introduced local lattice inhomogeneity, and show that the associated nanometer scale lattice deformation is marginal and cannot, alone, be responsible for the patched variation in the spectral gaps observed with scanning tunneling microscopy in the cuprates.

Timing Recollision in Nonsequential Double Ionization by Intense Elliptically Polarized Laser Pulses

We examine correlated electron and doubly charged ion momentum spectra from strong field double ionization of Neon employing intense elliptically polarized laser pulses. An ellipticity-dependent asymmetry of correlated electron and ion momentum distributions has been observed. Using a 3D semiclassical model, we demonstrate that our observations reflect the sub-cycle dynamics of the recollision process. Our work reveals a general physical picture for recollision-impact double ionization with elliptical polarization, and demonstrates the possibility of ultrafast control of the recollision dynamics.

Disentangled cooperative orderings in artificial rare-earth nickelates

Coupled transitions between distinct ordered phases are important aspects behind the rich phase complexity of correlated oxides that hinders our understanding of the underlying phenomena. For this reason, fundamental control over complex transitions has become a leading motivation of the designer approach to materials. We have devised a series of new superlattices by combining a Mott insulator and a correlated metal to form ultra-short period superlattices, which allow one to disentangle the simultaneous orderings in $RE$NiO$_3$. Tailoring an incommensurate heterostructure period relative to the bulk charge ordering pattern suppresses the charge order transition while preserving metal-insulator and antiferromagnetic transitions. Such selective decoupling of the entangled phases resolves the long-standing puzzle about the driving force behind the metal-insulator transition and points to the site selective Mott transition as the operative mechanism. This designer approach emphasizes the potential of heterointerfaces for selective control of simultaneous transitions in complex materials with entwined broken symmetries.

Diffractive shear interferometry for extreme ultraviolet high-resolution lensless imaging

We demonstrate a novel imaging approach and associated reconstruction algorithm for far-field coherent diffractive imaging, based on the measurement of a pair of laterally sheared diffraction patterns. The differential phase profile retrieved from such a measurement leads to improved reconstruction accuracy, increased robustness against noise, and faster convergence compared to traditional coherent diffractive imaging methods. We measure laterally sheared diffraction patterns using Fourier-transform spectroscopy with two phase-locked pulse pairs from a high harmonic source. Using this approach, we demonstrate spectrally resolved imaging at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths between 28 and 35 nm.

Measurement of optical constants of TiN and TiN/Ti/TiN multilayer films for microwave kinetic inductance photon-number-resolving detectors

We deposit thin titanium-nitride (TiN) and TiN/Ti/TiN multilayer films on sapphire substrates and measure the reflectance and transmittance in the wavelength range from 400 nm to 2000 nm using a spectrophotometer. The optical constants (complex refractive indices), including the refractive index n and the extinction coefficient k, have been derived. With the extracted refractive indices, we propose an optical stack structure using low-loss amorphous Si (a-Si) anti-reflective coating and a backside aluminum (Al) reflecting mirror, which can in theory achieve 100% photon absorption at 1550 nm. The proposed optical design shows great promise in enhancing the optical efficiency of TiN-based microwave kinetic inductance photon-number-resolving detectors.

Band dependent inter-layer $f$-electron hybridization in CeRhIn$_5$

A key issue in heavy fermion research is how subtle changes in the hybridization between the 4$f$ (5$f$) and conduction electrons can result in fundamentally different ground states. CeRhIn$_5$ stands out as a particularly notable example: replacing Rh by either Co or Ir, located above or below Rh in the periodic table, antiferromagnetism gives way to superconductivity. In this photoemission study of CeRhIn$_5$, we demonstrate that the use of resonant ARPES with polarized light allows to extract detailed information on the 4$f$ crystal field states and details on the 4$f$ and conduction electron hybridization which together determine the ground state. We directly observe weakly dispersive Kondo resonances of $f$-electrons and identify two of the three Ce $4f_{5/2}^{1}$ crystal-electric-field levels and band-dependent hybridization, which signals that the hybridization occurs primarily between the Ce $4f$ states in the CeIn$_3$ layer and two more three-dimensional bands composed of the Rh $4d$ and In $5p$ orbitals in the RhIn$_2$ layer. Our results allow to connect the properties observed at elevated temperatures with the unusual low-temperature properties of this enigmatic heavy fermion compound.

Superconducting micro-resonator arrays with ideal frequency spacing and extremely low frequency collision rate

We present a wafer trimming technique for producing superconducting micro-resonator arrays with highly uniform frequency spacing. With the light-emitting diode (LED) mapper technique demonstrated previously, we first map the measured resonance frequencies to the physical resonators. Then, we fine-tune each resonator's frequency by lithographically trimming a small length, calculated from the deviation of the measured frequency from its design value, from the interdigitated capacitor. We demonstrate this technique on a 127-resonator array made of titanium-nitride (TiN) and show that the uniformity of frequency spacing is greatly improved. The array yield in terms of frequency collisions improves from 84% to 97%, while the quality factors and noise properties are unaffected. The wafer trimming technique provides an easy-to-implement tool to improve the yield and multiplexing density of large resonator arrays, which is important for various applications in photon detection and quantum computing.

Design and construction of the POLAR detector

The POLAR detector is a space based Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) polarimeter with a wide field of view, which covers almost half the sky. The instrument uses Compton scattering of gamma rays on a plastic scintillator hodoscope to measure the polarization of the incoming photons. The instrument has been successfully launched on board of the Chinese space laboratory Tiangong~2 on September 15, 2016. The construction of the instrument components is described in this article. Details are provided on problems encountered during the construction phase and their solutions. Initial performance of the instrument in orbit is as expected from ground tests and Monte Carlo simulation.

The white dwarf binary pathways survey - II. Radial velocities of 1453 FGK stars with white dwarf companions from LAMOST DR4

We present the second paper of a series of publications aiming at obtaining a better understanding regarding the nature of type Ia supernovae (SNIa) progenitors by studying a large sample of detached F, G and K main sequence stars in close orbits with white dwarf companions (i.e. WD+FGK binaries). We employ the LAMOST (Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope) data release 4 spectroscopic data base together with GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) ultraviolet fluxes to identify 1,549 WD+FGK binary candidates (1,057 of which are new), thus doubling the number of known sources. We measure the radial velocities of 1,453 of these binaries from the available LAMOST spectra and/or from spectra obtained by us at a wide variety of different telescopes around the globe. The analysis of the radial velocity data allows us to identify 24 systems displaying more than 3sigma radial velocity variation that we classify as close binaries. We also discuss the fraction of close binaries among WD+FGK systems, which we find to be ~10 per cent, and demonstrate that high-resolution spectroscopy is required to efficiently identify double-degenerate SNIa progenitor candidates.

Constraining Radon Backgrounds in LZ

The LZ dark matter detector, like many other rare-event searches, will suffer from backgrounds due to the radioactive decay of radon daughters. In order to achieve its science goals, the concentration of radon within the xenon should not exceed $2μ$Bq/kg, or 20 mBq total within its 10 tonnes. The LZ collaboration is in the midst of a program to screen all significant components in contact with the xenon. The four institutions involved in this effort have begun sharing two cross-calibration sources to ensure consistent measurement results across multiple distinct devices. We present here five preliminary screening results, some mitigation strategies that will reduce the amount of radon produced by the most problematic components, and a summary of the current estimate of radon emanation throughout the detector. This best estimate totals $<17.3$ mBq, sufficiently low to meet the detector's science goals.

On the possibility to detect multipolar order in URu$_2$Si$_2$ by the electric quadrupolar transition of resonant elastic X-ray scattering

Resonant elastic X-ray scattering is a powerful technique for measuring multipolar order parameters. In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally study the possibility of using this technique to detect the proposed multipolar order parameters in URu$_2$Si$_2$ at the U-$L_{3}$ edge with the electric quadrupolar transition. Based on an atomic model, we calculate the azimuthal dependence of the quadrupolar transition at the U-$L_{3}$ edge. The results illustrate the potential of this technique for distinguishing different multipolar order parameters. We then perform experiments on ultra-clean single crystals of URu$_2$Si$_2$ at the U-$L_{3}$ edge to search for the predicted signal, but do not detect any indications of multipolar moments within the experimental uncertainty. We theoretically estimate the orders of magnitude of the cross-section and the expected count rate of the quadrupolar transition and compare them to the dipolar transitions at the U-$M_4$ and U-$L_3$ edges, clarifying the difficulty in detecting higher order multipolar order parameters in URu$_2$Si$_2$ in the current experimental setup.

A magnetic topological semimetal Sr1-yMn1-zSb2 (y, z< 0.1)

Weyl (WSMs) evolve from Dirac semimetals in the presence of broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) or space-inversion symmetry. The WSM phases in TaAs-class materials and photonic crystals are due to the loss of space-inversion symmetry. For TRS-breaking WSMs, despite numerous theoretical and experimental efforts, few examples have been reported. In this Article, we report a new type of magnetic semimetal Sr1-yMn1-zSb2 (y,z<0.1) with nearly massless relativistic fermion behaviour (m*=0.04-0.05m0, where m0 is the free electron mass). This material exhibits a ferromagnetic order for 304K < T < 565K, but a canted antiferromagnetic order with a ferromagnetic component for T < 304K. The combination of relativistic fermion behaviour and ferromagnetism in Sr1-yMn1-zSb2 offers a rare opportunity to investigate the interplay between relativistic fermions and spontaneous TRS breaking.

Instrument Performance and Simulation Verification of the POLAR Detector

POLAR is a new satellite-born detector aiming to measure the polarization of an unprecedented number of Gamma-Ray Bursts in the 50-500 keV energy range. The instrument, launched on-board the Tiangong-2 Chinese Space lab on the 15th of September 2016, is designed to measure the polarization of the hard X-ray flux by measuring the distribution of the azimuthal scattering angles of the incoming photons. A detailed understanding of the polarimeter and specifically of the systematic effects induced by the instrument's non-uniformity are required for this purpose. In order to study the instrument's response to polarization, POLAR underwent a beam test at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in France. In this paper both the beam test and the instrument performance will be described. This is followed by an overview of the Monte Carlo simulation tools developed for the instrument. Finally a comparison of the measured and simulated instrument performance will be provided and the instrument response to polarization will be presented.

Magnetism in artificial Ruddlesden-Popper iridates leveraged by structural distortions

We report on the tuning of magnetic interactions in superlattices composed of single and bilayer SrIrO$_3$ inter-spaced with SrTiO$_3$. Magnetic scattering shows predominately $c$-axis antiferromagnetic orientation of the magnetic moments for the bilayer justifying these systems as viable artificial analogues of the bulk Ruddlesden-Popper series iridates. Magnon gaps are observed in both superlattices, with the magnitude of the gap in the bilayer being reduced to nearly half that in its bulk structural analogue, Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. We assign this to modifications in the anisotropic exchange driven by bending of the $c$-axis Ir-O-Ir bond and subsequent local environment changes, as detected by x-ray diffraction and modeled using spin wave theory. These findings explain how even subtle structural modulations driven by heterostructuring in iridates are leveraged by spin orbit coupling to drive large changes in the magnetic interactions.

Strongly Gapped Spin-Wave Excitation in the Insulating Phase of NaOsO3

NaOsO3 hosts a rare manifestation of a metal-insulator transition driven by magnetic correlations, placing the magnetic exchange interactions in a central role. We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to directly probe these magnetic exchange interactions. A dispersive and strongly gapped (58 meV) excitation is observed indicating appreciable spin-orbit coupling in this 5d3 system. The excitation is well described within a minimal model Hamiltonian with strong anisotropy and Heisenberg exchange (J1=J2=13.9 meV). The observed behavior places NaOsO3 on the boundary between localized and itinerant magnetism.
