The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy Onboard the SATech-01 Satellite

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy (LEIA), a pathfinder of the Wide-field X-ray Telescope of the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, was successfully launched onboard the SATech-01 satellite of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 27 July 2022. In this paper, we introduce the design and on-ground test results of the LEIA instrument. Using state-of-the-art Micro-Pore Optics (MPO), a wide field-of-view (FoV) of 346 square degrees (18.6 degrees * 18.6 degrees) of the X-ray imager is realized. An optical assembly composed of 36 MPO chips is used to focus incident X-ray photons, and four large-format complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, each of 6 cm * 6 cm, are used as the focal plane detectors. The instrument has an angular resolution of 4 - 8 arcmin (in FWHM) for the central focal spot of the point spread function, and an effective area of 2 - 3 cm2 at 1 keV in essentially all the directions within the field of view. The detection passband is 0.5 - 4 keV in the soft X-rays and the sensitivity is 2 - 3 * 10-11 erg s-1 cm-2 (about 1 mini-Crab) at 1,000 second observation. The total weight of LEIA is 56 kg and the power is 85 W. The satellite, with a design lifetime of 2 years, operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit of 500 km with an orbital period of 95 minutes. LEIA is paving the way for future missions by verifying in flight the technologies of both novel focusing imaging optics and CMOS sensors for X-ray observation, and by optimizing the working setups of the instrumental parameters. In addition, LEIA is able to carry out scientific observations to find new transients and to monitor known sources in the soft X-ray band, albeit limited useful observing time available.

A Piecewise Convexification Method for Non-Convex Multi-Objective Optimization Programs with Box Constraints

This paper presents a piecewise convexification method for solving non-convex multi-objective optimization problems with box constraints. Based on the ideas of the $α$-based Branch and Bound (${\rm αBB}$) method of global optimization and the interval subdivision, a series of convex relaxation sub-multiobjective problems for this non-convex multi-objective optimization problem are firstly obtained, and these sub-problems constitute a piecewise convexification problem of the original problem on the whole box. We then construct the (approximate, weakly) efficient solution set of this piecewise convexification problem, and use these sets to approximate the globally (weakly) efficient solution set of the original problem. Furthermore, we propose a piecewise convexification algorithm and show that this algorithm can also obtain approximate globally efficient solutions by calculating a finite subset of the efficient solution set of the multi-objective convex sub-problems only. Finally, its performance is demonstrated with various test instances.

Dynamic transition from insulating state to eta-pairing state in a composite non-Hermitian system

The dynamics of Hermitian many-body quantum systems has long been a challenging subject due to the complexity induced by the particle-particle interactions. In contrast, this difficulty may be avoided in a well-designed non-Hermitian system. The exceptional point (EP) in a non-Hermitian system admits a peculiar dynamics: the final state being a particular eigenstate, coalescing state. In this work, we study the dynamic transition from a trivial insulating state to an η-pairing state in a composite non-Hermitian Hubbard system. The system consists of two subsystems, A and B, which are connected by unidirectional hoppings. We show that the dynamic transition from an insulating state to an η-pairing state occurs by the probability flow from A to B: the initial state is prepared as an insulating state of A, while B is left empty. The final state is an η-pairing state in B but empty in A. Analytical analyses and numerical simulations show that the speed of relaxation of the off-diagonal long-range order pair state depends on the order of the EP, which is determined by the number of pairs and the fidelity of the scheme is immune to the irregularity of the lattice.

Observation of the toroidal rotation in a new designed compact torus system for EAST

Compact torus injection is considered as a high promising approach to realize central fueling in the future tokamak device. Recently, a compact torus injection system has been developed for the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, and the preliminary results have been carried out. In the typical discharges of the early stage, the velocity, electron density and particles number of the CT can reach 56.0 km/s, 8.73*10^20 m^(-3) and 2.4*10^18 (for helium), respectively. A continuous increase in CT density during acceleration was observed in the experiment, which may be due to the plasma ionized in the formation region may carry part of the neutral gas into the acceleration region, and these neutral gases will be ionized again. In addition, a significant plasma rotation is observed during the formation process which is introduced by the E*B drift. In this paper, we present the detailed system setup and the preliminary platform test results, hoping to provide some basis for the exploration of the CT technique medium-sized superconducting tokamak device in the future

Quantum mold casting for topological insulating and edge states

We study the possibility of transferring fermions from a trivial system as particle source to an empty system but at topological phase as a mold for casting a stable topological insulator dynamically. We show that this can be realized by a non-Hermitian unidirectional hopping, which connects a central system at topological phase and a trivial flat-band system with a periodic driving chemical potential, which scans over the valence band of the central system. The near exceptional-point dynamics allows a unidirectional dynamical process: the time evolution from an initial state with full-filled source system to a stable topological insulating state approximately. The result is demonstrated numerically by a source-assistant QWZ model and SSH chain in the presence of random perturbation. Our finding reveals a classical analogy of quench dynamics in quantum matter and provides a way for topological quantum state engineering.

Biot-Savart law in quantum matter

We study the topological nature of a class of lattice systems, whose Bloch vector can be expressed as the difference of two independent periodic vector functions (knots) in an auxiliary space. We show exactly that each loop as a degeneracy line generates a polarization field, obeying the Biot-Savart law: The degeneracy line acts as a current-carrying wire, while the polarization field corresponds to the generated magnetic field. Applying the Ampere's circuital law on a nontrivial topological system, we find that two Bloch knots entangle with each other, forming a link with the linking number being the value of Chern number of the energy band. In addition, two lattice models, an extended QWZ model and a quasi-1D model with magnetic flux, are proposed to exemplify the application of our approach. In the aid of the Biot-Savart law, the pumping charge as a dynamic measure of Chern number is obtained numerically from quasi-adiabatic processes.

Untying links through anti-parity-time-symmetric coupling

We reveal how the vector field links are untied under the influence of anti-parity-time-symmetric couplings in a dissipative sublattice-symmetric topological photonic crystal lattice. The topology of the quasi-one-dimensional two-band system is encoded in the geometric topology of the vector fields associated with the Bloch Hamiltonian. The linked vector fields reflect the topology of the nontrivial phase. The topological phase transition occurs concomitantly with the untying of the vector field link at the exceptional points. Counterintuitively, more dissipation constructively creates a nontrivial topology. The linking number predicts the number of topological photonic zero modes.

Resonant generation of $p$-wave Cooper pair in non-Hermitian Kitaev chain at exceptional point

We investigate a non-Hermitian extension of Kitaev chain by considering imaginary $p$-wave pairing amplitudes. The exact solution shows that the phase diagram consists two phases with real and complex \ Bogoliubov-de-gens spectra, associated with $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking, which is separated by a hyperbolic exceptional line. The exceptional points (EPs) correspond to a specific Cooper pair state $( 1+c_{k}^{\dagger }c_{-k}^{\dagger }) \left\vert 0\right\rangle $\ with movable $k$ when the parameters vary along the exceptional line. The non-Hermiticity around EP supports resonant generation of such a pair state from the vacuum state $% \left\vert 0\right\rangle $ of fermions via the critical dynamic process. In addition, we propose a scheme to generate a superconducting state through a dynamic method.

Localization transitions and mobility edges in quasiperiodic ladder

We investigate localization properties in a two-coupled uniform chains with quasiperiodic modulation on interchain coupling strength. We demonstrate that this ladder is equivalent to a Aubry-Andre (AA) chain when two legs are symmetric. Analytical and numerical results indicate the appearance of mobility edges for asymmetric ladder. We also propose an easily engineered quasiperiodic ladder system which is a moiré superlattice system consisting of two-coupled uniform chains. An irrational lattice constant difference results in quasiperiodic structure. Numerical simulations show that such a system supports mobility edge. Additionally, we find that the mobility edge can be detected by a dynamic method, which bases on the measurement of surviving probability in the presence of a single imaginary negative potential as a leakage. The result provides insightful information about the localization transitions and mobility edge in experiment.

Knot Topology in Quantum Spin System

Knot theory provides a powerful tool for the understanding of topological matters in biology, chemistry, and physics. Here knot theory is introduced to describe topological phases in the quantum spin system. Exactly solvable models with long-range interactions are investigated, and Majorana modes of the quantum spin system are mapped into different knots and links. The topological properties of ground states of the spin system are visualized and characterized using crossing and linking numbers, which capture the geometric topologies of knots and links. The interactivity of energy bands is highlighted. In gapped phases, eigenstate curves are tangled and braided around each other forming links. In gapless phases, the tangled eigenstate curves may form knots. Our findings provide an alternative understanding of the phases in the quantum spin system, and provide insights into one-dimension topological phases of matter.

Visualizing Topology of Real-Energy Gapless Phase Arising from Exceptional Point

The discovery of novel topological phase advances our knowledge of nature and stimulates the development of applications. In non-Hermitian topological systems, the topology of band touching exceptional points is very important. Here we propose a real-energy topological gapless phase arising from exceptional points in one dimension, which has identical topological invariants as the topological gapless phase arising from degeneracy points. We develop a graphic approach to characterize the topological phases, where the eigenstates of energy bands are mapped to the graphs on a torus. The topologies of different phases are visualized and distinguishable; and the topological gapless edge state with amplification appropriate for topological lasing exists in the nontrivial phase. These results are elucidated through a non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger ladder. Our findings open new way for identifying topology phase of matter from visualizing the eigenstates.

Quantum transport in non-Hermitian impurity array

We study the formation of band gap bound states induced by a non-Hermitian impurity embedded in a Hermitian system. We show that a pair of bound states emerges inside the band gap when a parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) imaginary potential is added in a strongly coupled bilayer lattices and the bound states become strongly localized when the system approaches to the exceptional point (EP). As a direct consequence of such $\mathcal{PT}$ impurity-induced bound states, an impurity array can be constructed and protected by energy gap. The effective Hamiltonian of the impurity array is non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) type and hosts Dirac probability-preserving dynamics. We demonstrate the conclusion by numerical simulations for the quantum transport of wave packet in right-angle bends waveguide and $Y$-beam splitter. Our finding provides alternative way to fabricate quantum device by non-Hermitian impurity.

Dynamical signature of moire pattern in non-Hermitian ladder

We study the dynamical behavior of a non-Hermitian moire superlattice system, which consists of two-coupled SSH chains with staggered imaginary on-site potentials. There are two main spatial regions, in which systems are in unbroken symmetric phases with fully real spectrum, appearing periodically along the ladder. We show that the two quantum phases are dimerized and tetramerized, which determine the distinct dynamical behaviors. Dirac probability can oscillate periodically, increase quadratically and increase exponentially, which correspond to the unbroken phase, exceptional point and the broken phase of the tetramerized region. In comparison, the Dirac probability can exhibit high-frequency oscillation in the dimerized region. These phenomena demonstrate the dynamical signature and provide insightful information of the moire pattern in the non-Hermitian regime.

Quantum phase transition without gap opening

Quantum phase transitions (QPTs), including symmetry breaking and topological types, always associated with gap closing and opening. We analyze the topological features of the quantum phase boundary of the XY model in a transverse magnetic field. Based on the results from graphs in the auxiliary space, we find that gapless ground states at boundary have different topological characters. On the other hand, In the framework of Majorana representation, the Majorana lattice is shown to be two coupled SSH chains. The analysis of the quantum fidelity for the Majorana eigen vector indicates the signature of QPT for the gapless state. Furthermore numerical computation shows that the transition between two types of gapless phases associates with divergence of second-order derivative of groundstate energy density, which obeys scaling behavior. It indicates that a continues QPT can occur among gapless phases. The underlying mechanism of the gapless QPT is also discussed. The gap closing and opening are not necessary for a QPT.

Generating polarization controllable FELs at Dalian coherent light source

The property of the FEL polarization is of great importance to the user community. FEL pulses with ultra-high intensity and flexible polarization control ability will absolutely open up new scientific realms. In this paper, several polarization control approaches are presented to investigate the great potential on Dalian coherent light source, which is a government-approved novel FEL user facility with the capability of wavelength continuously tunable in the EUV regime of 50-150 nm. The numerical simulations show that both circularly polarized FELs with highly modulating frequency and 100 microjoule level pulse energy could be generated at Dalian coherent light source.
