Long-Range Propagation and Interference of $d$-wave Superconducting Pairs in Graphene

Recent experiments have shown that proximity with high-temperature superconductors induces unconventional superconducting correlations in graphene. Here we demonstrate that those correlations propagate hundreds of nanometer, allowing for the unique observation of $d$-wave Andreev pair interferences in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$-graphene devices that behave as a Fabry-Pérot cavity. The interferences show as a series of pronounced conductance oscillations analogous to those originally predicted by de Gennes--Saint-James for conventional metal-superconductor junctions. The present work is pivotal to the study of exotic directional effects expected for nodal superconductivity in Dirac materials.

Phase-Controllable Nonlocal Spin Polarization in Proximitized Nanowires

We study the magnetic and superconducting proximity effects in a semiconducting nanowire (NW) attached to superconducting leads and a ferromagnetic insulator (FI). We show that a sizable equilibrium spin polarization arises in the NW due to the interplay between the superconducting correlations and the exchange field in the FI. The resulting magnetization has a nonlocal contribution that spreads in the NW over the superconducting coherence length and is opposite in sign to the local spin polarization induced by the magnetic proximity effect in the normal state. For a Josephson-junction setup, we show that the nonlocal magnetization can be controlled by the superconducting phase bias across the junction. Our findings are relevant for the implementation of Majorana bound states in state-of-the-art hybrid structures.

Theory of Spin Hall Magnetoresistance from a Microscopic Perspective

We present a theory of the spin Hall magnetoresistance of metals in contact with magnetic insulators. We express the spin-mixing conductances, which govern the phenomenology of the effect, in terms of the microscopic parameters of the interface and the spin-spin correlation functions of the local moments on the surface of the magnetic insulator. The magnetic field and temperature dependence of the spin-mixing conductances leads to a rich behaviour of the resistance due to an interplay between the Hanle effect and spin mixing at the interface. Our theory provides a useful tool for understanding the experiments on heavy metals in contact with magnetic insulators of different kinds, and it predicts striking behaviours of magnetoresistance.

Nuclear probes of an out-of-equilibrium plasma at the highest compression

We report the highest compression reached in laboratory plasmas using eight laser beams, E$_{laser}$$\approx$12 kJ, $τ_{laser}$=2 ns in third harmonic on a CD$_2$ target at the ShenGuang-II Upgrade (SGII-Up) facility in Shanghai, China. We estimate the deuterium density $ρ_D$= 2.0 $\pm$ 0.9 kg/cm$^{3}$, and the average kinetic energy of the plasma ions less than 1 keV. The highest reached areal density $Λρ_{D}$=4.8 $\pm$ 1.5 g/cm$^{2}$ was obtained from the measured ratio of the sequential ternary fusion reactions (dd$\rightarrow$t+p and t+d$\rightarrow$$α$+n) and the two body reaction fusions (dd$\rightarrow$$^3$He+n). At such high densities, sequential ternary and also quaternary nuclear reactions become important as well (i.e. n(14.1 MeV) + $^{12}$C $\rightarrow$ n'+$^{12}$C* etc.) resulting in a shift of the neutron (and proton) kinetic energies from their birth values. The Down Scatter Ratio (DSR-quaternary nuclear reactions) method, i.e. the ratio of the 10-12MeV neutrons divided by the total number of 14.1MeV neutrons produced, confirms the high densities reported above. The estimated lifetime of the highly compressed plasma is 52 $\pm$ 9 ps, much smaller than the lasers pulse duration.

T0 Fan-out for Back-n White Neutron Facility at CSNS

the main physics goal for Back-n white neutron facility at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is to measure nuclear data. The energy of neutrons is one of the most important parameters for measuring nuclear data. Method of time of flight (TOF) is used to obtain the energy of neutrons. The time when proton bunches hit the thick tungsten target is considered as the start point of TOF. T0 signal, generated from the CSNS accelerator, represents this start time. Besides, the T0 signal is also used as the gate control signal that triggers the readout electronics. Obviously, the timing precision of T0 directly affects the measurement precision of TOF and controls the running or readout electronics. In this paper, the T0 fan-out for Back-n white neutron facility at CSNS is proposed. The T0 signal travelling from the CSNS accelerator is fanned out to the two underground experiment stations respectively over long cables. To guarantee the timing precision, T0 signal is conditioned with good signal edge. Furthermore, techniques of signal pre-emphasizing and equalizing are used to improve signal quality after T0 being transmitted over long cables with about 100 m length. Experiments show that the T0 fan-out works well, the T0 signal transmitted over 100 m remains a good time resolution with a standard deviation of 25 ps. It absolutely meets the required accuracy of the measurement of TOF.

Electronics of Time-of-flight Measurement for Back-n at CSNS

Back-n is a white neutron experimental facility at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). The time structure of the primary proton beam make it fully applicable to use TOF (time-of-flight) method for neutron energy measuring. We implement the electronics of TOF measurement on the general-purpose readout electronics designed for all of the seven detectors in Back-n. The electronics is based on PXIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express eXtensions for Instrumentation) platform, which is composed of FDM (Field Digitizer Modules), TCM (Trigger and Clock Module), and SCM (Signal Conditioning Module). T0 signal synchronous to the CSNS accelerator represents the neutron emission from the target. It is the start of time stamp. The trigger and clock module (TCM) receives, synchronizes and distributes the T0 signal to each FDM based on the PXIe backplane bus. Meantime, detector signals after being conditioned are fed into FDMs for waveform digitizing. First sample point of the signal is the stop of time stamp. According to the start, stop time stamp and the time of signal over threshold, the total TOF can be obtained. FPGA-based (Field Programmable Gate Array) TDC is implemented on TCM to accurately acquire the time interval between the asynchronous T0 signal and the global synchronous clock phase. There is also an FPGA-based TDC on FDM to accurately acquire the time interval between T0 arriving at FDM and the first sample point of the detector signal, the over threshold time of signal is obtained offline. This method for TOF measurement is efficient and not needed for additional modules. Test result shows the accuracy of TOF is sub-nanosecond and can meet the requirement for Back-n at CSNS.

A proposed direct measurement of cross section at Gamow window for key reaction $^{19}$F($p$,$α$)$^{16}$O in Asymptotic Giant Branch stars with a planned accelerator in CJPL

In 2014, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) approved the Jinping Underground Nuclear Astrophysics laboratory (JUNA) project, which aims at direct cross-section measurements of four key stellar nuclear reactions right down to the Gamow windows. In order to solve the observed fluorine overabundances in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars, measuring the key $^{19}$F($p$,$α$)$^{16}$O reaction at effective burning energies (i.e., at Gamow window) is established as one of the scientific research sub-projects. The present paper describes this sub-project in details, including motivation, status, experimental setup, yield and background estimation, aboveground test, as well as other relevant reactions.

Effect of Ti doping on the electrical transport and magnetic properties of layered compound Na0.8CoO2

Effect of Ti doping on the electrical transport and magnetic properties of layered Na0.8Co1-xTixO2 compounds has been investigated. The lattice parameters a and c increase with x. A minor amount of Ti doping results in a metal-insulator transition at low temperatures. For samples with x > 0.03, the variable-range hopping process dominates the transport behavior above a certain temperature. The temperature dependence of magnetization of all the samples is found to obey the Curie-Weiss law. The mechanism of the doping effect is discussed.

Surface morphology, structure and transport property of NaxCoO2 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition

In this paper, we report the growth of NaxCoO2 thin films by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD). It is shown that the concentration of sodium is very sensitive to the substrate temperature and the target-substrate distance due to the evaporation of sodium during the deposition. alpha prime-phase Na0.75CoO2 and gamma- phase Na0.71CoO2 thin films can be obtained with different conditions. Correspondingly, the surface morphology of the films changes from flake-like to particle-like. The temperature dependence of resistivity for the films prepared with the optimal condition shows metallic behavior, consistent with the data of NaxCoO2 single crystals. This work demonstrates that PLD is a promising technique to get high quality NaxCoO2 thin films.

Universal behavior of giant electroresistance in epitaxial La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 thin films

We report a giant resistance drop induced by dc electrical currents in La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 epitaxial thin films. Resistance of the patterned thin films decreases exponentially with increasing current and a maximum drop shows at the temperature of resistance peak Tp. Variation of resistance with current densities can be scaled below and above Tp, respectively. This work can be useful for the future applications of electroresistance.

Electrical transport and magnetic properties of nanostructured La0.67Ca0.33MnO3

Nanostructured La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (NS-LCMO) was formed by pulsed-laser deposition on the surface of porous Al2O3. The resistance peak temperature (Tp) of the NS-LCMO increases with increasing average thickness of the films, while their Curie temperatures (Tc) remain unchanged. The coercive field of the samples increases with decreasing film thickness and its temperature dependence can be well described by Hc(T) = Hc(0)[1-(T/TB)1/2]. A large magnetoresistance and strong memory effect were observed for the NS-LCMO. The results are discussed in terms of the size effect, Coulomb blockade and magnetic tunneling effect. This work also demonstrates a new way to get nanostructured manganites.

Effects of Mn-substitution for Co on the structure and physical properties of NayCoO2

Structure, transport and magnetic properties have been investigated for layered NaCo1-xMnxO2 materials. With the increase of Mn-doping amount, measurements of x-ray diffraction indicate that the in-plane lattice parameter a decreases progressively, and, conversely, the lattice parameter c increases rapidly. Small amount of Mn doping (i.e. 3% Mn in our work) could result in a metal-insulator transition. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurement shows that the Co valence is about 3.3 and remains unchanged with doping. In contrast, the valence of Mn increases rapidly with doping and reaches 3.7 for the sample with x=0.5. The temperature dependence of magnetization of the samples is found to obey the Curie-Weiss law. Some relevant results have been discussed in terms of the disorder effect induced by doping of magnetic ions.

Influence of the starting composition on the structural and superconducting properties of MgB2 phase

We report the preparation of Mg$_{1-x}$B$_{2}$ (0$\le$x$\le$0.5) compounds with the nominal compositions. Single phase MgB$_{2}$ was obtained for x=0 sample. For 0$<$x$\le$0.5, MgB$_{4}$ coexists with "MgB$_{2}$" and the amount of MgB$_{4}$ increases with x. With the increase of x, the lattice parameter ${\it c}$ of "MgB$_{2}$" increases and the lattice parameter ${\it a}$ decreases, correspondingly T$_{c}$ of Mg$_{1-x}$B$_{2}$ decreases. The results were discussed in terms of the presence of Mg vacancies or B interstitials in the MgB$_{2}$ structure. This work is helpful to the understanding of the MgB$_{2}$ films with different T$_{c}$, as well as the Mg site doping effect for MgB$_{2}$.

Effect of Li doping on structure and superconducting transition temperature of Mg1-xLixB2

We report the preparation of Mg1-xLixB2 compounds. Nearly single phased samples were obtained for x<0.3. The in-plane lattice parameter a decreases with Li doping, while the lattice parameter c does not show obvious change. The superconducting transition temperature of Mg1-xLixB2 decreases with Li doping and loss of superconductivity occurs for x=0.5 sample. The results of our work are consistent with the prediction of the hole superconductivity mechanism.
