Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Flux and Spectrum at Daya Bay

This Letter reports a measurement of the flux and energy spectrum of electron antineutrinos from six 2.9~GW$_{th}$ nuclear reactors with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1,579~m) underground experimental halls in the Daya Bay experiment. Using 217 days of data, 296,721 and 41,589 inverse beta decay (IBD) candidates were detected in the near and far halls, respectively. The measured IBD yield is (1.55 $\pm$ 0.04) $\times$ 10$^{-18}$~cm$^2$/GW/day or (5.92 $\pm$ 0.14) $\times$ 10$^{-43}$~cm$^2$/fission. This flux measurement is consistent with previous short-baseline reactor antineutrino experiments and is $0.946\pm0.022$ ($0.991\pm0.023$) relative to the flux predicted with the Huber+Mueller (ILL+Vogel) fissile antineutrino model. The measured IBD positron energy spectrum deviates from both spectral predictions by more than 2$σ$ over the full energy range with a local significance of up to $\sim$4$σ$ between 4-6 MeV. A reactor antineutrino spectrum of IBD reactions is extracted from the measured positron energy spectrum for model-independent predictions.

Transmission phase lapse in the non-Hermitian Aharonov-Bohm interferometer near the spectral singularity

We study the effect of PT-symmetric imaginary potentials embedded in the two arms of an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer on the transmission phase by finding an exact solution for a concrete tight-binding system. It is observed that the spectral singularity always occurs at k=${\pm}$π/2 for a wide range of fluxes and imaginary potentials. Critical behavior associated with the physics of the spectral singularity is also investigated. It is demonstrated that the quasi-spectral singularity corresponds to a transmission maximum and the transmission phase jumps abruptly by π when the system is swept through this point. Moreover, We find that there exists a pulse-like phase lapse when the imaginary potential approaches the boundary value of the spectral singularity.

Search for a Light Sterile Neutrino at Daya Bay

A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. The experiment's unique configuration of multiple baselines from six 2.9~GW$_{\rm th}$ nuclear reactors to six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1579~m) underground experimental halls makes it possible to test for oscillations to a fourth (sterile) neutrino in the $10^{\rm -3}~{\rm eV}^{2} < |Δm_{41}^{2}| < 0.3~{\rm eV}^{2}$ range. The relative spectral distortion due to electron antineutrino disappearance was found to be consistent with that of the three-flavor oscillation model. The derived limits on $\sin^22θ_{14}$ cover the $10^{-3}~{\rm eV}^{2} \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.1~{\rm eV}^{2}$ region, which was largely unexplored.

Asymmetric transmission through a flux-controlled non-Hermitian scattering center

We study the possibility of asymmetric transmission induced by a non-Hermitian scattering center embedded in a one-dimensional waveguide, motivated by the aim of realizing quantum diode in a non-Hermitian system. It is shown that a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric non-Hermitian scattering center always has symmetric transmission although the dynamics within the isolated center can be unidirectional, especially at its exceptional point. We propose a concrete scheme based on a flux-controlled non-Hermitian scattering center, which comprises a non-Hermitian triangular ring threaded by an Aharonov-Bohm flux. The analytical solution shows that such a complex scattering center acts as a diode at the resonant energy level of the spectral singularity, exhibiting perfect unidirectionality of the transmission. The connections between the phenomena of the asymmetric transmission and reflectionless absorption are also discussed.

Limits on light WIMPs with a germanium detector at 177 eVee threshold at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

The China Dark Matter Experiment reports results on light WIMP dark matter searches at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory with a germanium detector array with a total mass of 20 g. The physics threshold achieved is 177 eVee ("ee" represents electron equivalent energy) at 50% signal efficiency. With 0.784 kg-days of data, exclusion region on spin-independent coupling with the nucleon is derived, improving over our earlier bounds at WIMP mass less than 4.6 GeV.

Independent Measurement of Theta13 via Neutron Capture on Hydrogen at Daya Bay

A new measurement of the $θ_{13}$ mixing angle has been obtained at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment via the detection of inverse beta decays tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen. The antineutrino events for hydrogen capture are distinct from those for gadolinium capture with largely different systematic uncertainties, allowing a determination independent of the gadolinium-capture result and an improvement on the precision of $θ_{13}$ measurement. With a 217-day antineutrino data set obtained with six antineutrino detectors and from six 2.9 GW$_{th}$ reactors, the rate deficit observed at the far hall is interpreted as $\sin^22θ_{13}=0.083\pm0.018$ in the three-flavor oscillation model. When combined with the gadolinium-capture result from Daya Bay, we obtain $\sin^22θ_{13}=0.089\pm0.008$ as the final result for the six-antineutrino-detector configuration of the Daya Bay experiment.

Spectral measurement of electron antineutrino oscillation amplitude and frequency at Daya Bay

A measurement of the energy dependence of antineutrino disappearance at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is reported. Electron antineutrinos ($\overlineν_{e}$) from six $2.9$ GW$_{\rm th}$ reactors were detected with six detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 m and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls. Using 217 days of data, 41589 (203809 and 92912) antineutrino candidates were detected in the far hall (near halls). An improved measurement of the oscillation amplitude $\sin^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.090^{+0.008}_{-0.009} $ and the first direct measurement of the $\overlineν_{e}$ mass-squared difference $|Δm^{2}_{ee}|= (2.59_{-0.20}^{+0.19}) \times 10^{-3}\ {\rm eV}^2 $ is obtained using the observed $\overlineν_{e}$ rates and energy spectra in a three-neutrino framework. This value of $|Δm^{2}_{ee}|$ is consistent with $|Δm^{2}_{μμ}|$ measured by muon neutrino disappearance, supporting the three-flavor oscillation model.

Improved Measurement of Electron Antineutrino Disappearance at Daya Bay

We report an improved measurement of the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ from the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. We exclude a zero value for $\sin^22θ_{13}$ with a significance of 7.7 standard deviations. Electron antineutrinos from six reactors of 2.9 GW$_{\rm th}$ were detected in six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (flux-weighted baselines of 470 m and 576 m) and one far (1648 m) underground experimental halls. Using 139 days of data, 28909 (205308) electron antineutrino candidates were detected at the far hall (near halls). The ratio of the observed to the expected number of antineutrinos assuming no oscillations at the far hall is $0.944\pm 0.007({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.003({\rm syst.})$. An analysis of the relative rates in six detectors finds $\sin^22θ_{13}=0.089\pm 0.010({\rm stat.})\pm0.005({\rm syst.})$ in a three-neutrino framework.

Comments on "Plasma oscillations and nonextensive statistics"

The paper, authored by J. A. S. Lima et al, was published in Phys. Rev. E in 2000 has discussed the dispersion relation and Landau damping of Langmuir wave in the context of the nonextensive statistics proposed by Tsallis. It has been cited by many authors because the dispersion relation in Tsallis formalism present a good fit to the experimental data when q<1, while the classical result based on Maxwellian distribution only provides a crude description. However, the results obtained in this paper are problematic. In this comments on the paper we shall derive the correct analytic formulas both for the dispersion relation and Landau damping in Tsallis formalism. We hope that this comments will be useful in providing the correct results.

The first candidate for chiral nuclei in the $A\sim80$ mass region: $^{80}$Br

Excited states of $^{80}$Br have been investigated via the $^{76}$Ge($^{11}$B, $α$3n) and $^{76}$Ge($^{7}$Li, 3n) reactions and a new $ΔI$ = 1 band has been identified which resides $\sim$ 400 keV above the yrast band. Based on the experimental results and their comparison with the triaxial particle rotor model calculated ones, a chiral character of the two bands within the $πg_{9/2}\otimes νg_{9/2}$ configuration is proposed, which provides the first evidence for chirality in the $A\sim80$ region.

Investigation of excited states in $^{18}$Ne via resonant elastic scattering of $^{17}$F+p and its astrophysical implication in the stellar reaction of $^{14}$O($α$,$p$)$^{17}$F

Properties of proton resonances in $^{18}$Ne have been investigated efficiently by utilizing a technique of proton resonant elastic scattering with a $^{17}$F radioactive ion (RI) beam and a thick proton target. A 4.22~MeV/nucleon $^{17}$F RI beam was produced via a projectile-fragmentation reaction, and subsequently separated by a Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou ({\tt RIBLL}). Energy spectra of the recoiled protons were measured by two sets of $Δ$E-E silicon telescope at center-of-mass scattering angles of $θ_{c.m.}$$\approx$175${^\circ}$$\pm$5${^\circ}$, $θ_{c.m.}$$\approx$152${^\circ}$$\pm$8${^\circ}$, respectively. Several proton resonances in $^{18}$Ne were observed, and their resonant parameters have been determined by an $R$-matrix analysis of the differential cross sections in combination with the previous results. The resonant parameters are related to the reaction-rate calculation of the stellar $^{14}$O($α$,$p$)$^{17}$F reaction, which was thought to be the breakout reaction from the hot CNO cycles into the $rp$-process in x-ray bursters. Here, $J^π$=(3$^-$, 2$^-$) are tentatively assigned to the 6.15-MeV state which was thought the key 1$^-$ state previously. In addition, a doublet structure at 7.05 MeV are tentatively identified, and its contribution to the resonant reaction rate of $^{14}$O($α$,$p$)$^{17}$F could be enhanced by at least factors of about 4$\sim$6 in comparison with the previous estimation involving only a singlet. The present calculated resonant rates are much larger than those previous values, and it may imply that this breakout reaction could play a crucial role under x-ray bursters conditions.

Synthetic antiferromagnet with Heusler alloy Co2FeAl ferromagnetic layers

Heusler alloy Co2FeAl was employed as ferromagnetic layers in Co2FeAl/Ru/Co2FeAl synthetic antiferromagnet structures. The experimental results show that the structure with a Ru thickness of 0.45 nm takes on strongly antiferromagnetic coupling, which maintains up to 150 oC annealing for 1 hour. The structure has a very low saturation magnetization Ms of 425 emu/cc, a low switching field Hsw of 4.3 Oe and a high saturation field Hs of 5257 Oe at room temperature, which are favorable for application in ultrahigh density magnetic read heads or other magnetic memory devices. XRD study testifies that the as-deposited Co2FeAl film is in B2 phase. Therefore Heusler alloys can be used to fabricate SyAF and it is possible to make "all-Heusler" spin-valves or magnetic tunneling junctions with better magnetic switching properties and high magnetoresistance.

Cerenkov Emission by Neutral Particles in Gravitoelectro-magnetic Fields

It is shown that under the post-Newtonian approximation the Einstein equations can be reduced to the standard Maxwell-type field equations in a medium; in such a context the Cerenkov emission by a neutralparticle gives large energy loss while the particle moves at faster than the phase speed of waves in the medium.

Nonlinear Interactions of Gravitational Wave with Matter in Magnetic-type Maxwell-Vlasov Description

The interactions of gravitational waves with interstellar matter, dealing with resonant wave-particle and wave-wave interactions, are considered on the basis of magnetic-type Maxwell-Vlasov equations. It is found that the behavior of the fields, involving the "gravitoelectromagnetic" or "GEM " fields, the perturbed density field and self-generated gravitomagnetic field with low frequency, can be described by the nonlinear coupling equations Eqs. (6.10)-(6.12). Numerical results show that they may collapse. In other words, due to self-condensing, a stronger GME fields could be produced; and they could appear as the gravitational waves with high energy reaching on Earth. In this case, Weber's results, perhaps, are acceptable.

Finite coherent length and multi-pion correlation effects on two-pion interferometry

The effects of multi-pion correlations and finite coherent length on two-pion interferometry are studied. It was shown that as the pion multiplicity and coherent length become larger, the apparent radius and the apparent coherent parameters derived from two-pion interferometry become smaller. The influence of the coherent length on the effective temperature is discussed.

Inelastic Rescattering and CP Asymmetries in D -> pi+ pi-, pi0 pi0

We study the direct CP violation induced by inelastic final state interaction (FSI) rescattering in $D\toππ$ modes, and find that the resultant CP asymmetry is about $10^{-4}$ which is larger than $ε'$ in the K-system. Our estimation is based on well-established theories and experiment measured data, so there are almost no free parameters except the weak phase $δ_{13}$ in the CKM matrix.

Possible effects of quark and gluon condensates in quarkonium spectra

The Cornell potential with the best fitted parameters $α_{s}$ and $κ$ are modified by adding terms derived from non-perturbative QCD, which are characterized by a series of non-vanishing vacuum condensates of quarks and gluons. In terms of this potential, we study the system of heavy quarkonia. The results show that the correction caused by the additional terms reduces the deviation between the data and the values calculated with the pure Cornell potential and improves the splittings of energy levels. The achievements indicate that the non-perturbative effects induced by vacuum condensates play an important role for the correction to $1/q^2$, which in general was phenomenologically put in by hand. This result would be helpful for understanding non-perturbative QCD along a parallel direction to the QCD sum rules.
