Graph Cut-guided Maximal Coding Rate Reduction for Learning Image Embedding and Clustering

In the era of pre-trained models, image clustering task is usually addressed by two relevant stages: a) to produce features from pre-trained vision models; and b) to find clusters from the pre-trained features. However, these two stages are often considered separately or learned by different paradigms, leading to suboptimal clustering performance. In this paper, we propose a unified framework, termed graph Cut-guided Maximal Coding Rate Reduction (CgMCR$^2$), for jointly learning the structured embeddings and the clustering. To be specific, we attempt to integrate an efficient clustering module into the principled framework for learning structured representation, in which the clustering module is used to provide partition information to guide the cluster-wise compression and the learned embeddings is aligned to desired geometric structures in turn to help for yielding more accurate partitions. We conduct extensive experiments on both standard and out-of-domain image datasets and experimental results validate the effectiveness of our approach.

An efficient numerical approach for stochastic evolution PDEs driven by random diffusion coefficients and multiplicative noise

In this paper, we investigate the stochastic evolution equations (SEEs) driven by $\log$-Whittle-Mat$\acute{{\mathrm{e}}}$rn (W-M) random diffusion coefficient field and $Q$-Wiener multiplicative force noise. First, the well-posedness of the underlying equations is established by proving the existence, uniqueness, and stability of the mild solution. A sampling approach called approximation circulant embedding with padding is proposed to sample the random coefficient field. Then a spatio-temporal discretization method based on semi-implicit Euler-Maruyama scheme and finite element method is constructed and analyzed. An estimate for the strong convergence rate is derived. Numerical experiments are finally reported to confirm the theoretical result.

Exploring the intrinsic energy resolution of liquid scintillator to approximately 1 MeV electrons

We proposed a novel method for exploring the intrinsic energy resolution of a liquid scintillator (LAB + 2.5 g/L PPO + 3 mg/L bis-MSB) for approximately 1 MeV electrons. With the help of coincidence detection technology, single-energy electrons of Bi 207 were effectively selected. With careful measurement and analysis of the energy resolution of a small liquid scintillator detector, the intrinsic energy resolution to 976 keV electrons was extracted to be 1.83%. We used the wide-angle Compton coincidence (WACC) method to measure the luminescent nonlinearity of the liquid scintillator and found that it contributes only weakly to the intrinsic energy resolution of electrons. Such an unexpected large intrinsic energy resolution may come from fluctuations in energy transfer processes.

Structural and magnetic properties of MnCo1-xFexSi alloys

The crystal structures, martensitic structural transitions and magnetic properties of MnCo1-xFexSi (0 <= x <= 0.50) alloys were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. In high-temperature paramagnetic state, the alloys undergo a martensitic structural transitions from the Ni2In-type hexagonal parent phase to the TiNiSi-type orthorhombic martensite. Both the martensitic transition temperature (TM) and Curie temperatures of martensite (T_C^M) decrease with increasing Fe content. The introduced Fe atoms establish ferromagnetic (FM) coupling between Fe-Mn atoms and destroy the double spiral antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling in MnCoSi compound, resulting in a magnetic change in the martensite phase from a spiral AFM state to a FM state. For the alloys with x = 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20, a metamagnetic transition was observed in between the two magnetic states. A magnetostructural phase diagram of MnCo1-xFexSi (0 <= x <= 0.50) alloys was proposed.

Growth of Strongly Biaxially Aligned MgB2 Thin Films on Sapphire by Post-annealing of Amorphous Precursors

MgB2 thin films were cold-grown on sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), followed by post-annealing in mixed, reducing gas, Mg-rich, Zr gettered, environments. The films had Tcs in the range 29 K to 34 K, Jcs (20K, H=0) in the range 30 kA/cm2 to 300 kA/cm2, and irreversibility fields at 20 K of 4 T to 6.2 T. An inverse correlation was found between Tc and irreversibility field. The films had grain sizes of 0.1-1 micron and a strong biaxial alignment was observed in the 950C annealed film.

Critical currents and vortex dynamics in super-conducting MgB2

The recently-discovered MgB2 super-conductor has a transition temperature Tc approaching 40K, placing it intermediate between the families of low and high temperature super-conductors (LTS and HTS). In practical applications, super-conductors are permeated by quantised magnetic flux vortices, and when a current flows there is dissipation unless the vortices are "pinned" in some way, and so inhibited from moving under the influence of the Lorentz force. This vortex motion sets the limiting critical current density Jc in the super-conductor. Vortex behaviour has proved to be more complicated in the HTS than in LTS materials. While this has stimulated extensive theoretical and experimental research, it has impeded applications. Clearly it is important to explore vortex behaviour in MgB2; here we report on Jc, and also on the creep rate S, which is a measure of how fast the "persistent" currents decay. Our results show that naturally-occurring grain boundaries are highly transparent to supercurrent, and suggest that the steep decline in Jc with increasing magnetic field H reflects a weakening of the vortex pinning energy, possibly because this compound forms naturally with a high degree of crystalline perfection.
