Photoinduced ultrafast dynamics of local nematicity and lattice distortions in FeSe crystals

Formation of electronic nematicity is a common thread of unconventional superconductors. In iron-based materials, the long-range nematic order is revealed by the orthorhombic lattice distortion, which importance is a highly controversial topic due the small magnitude of the distortion. Here, we study the local crystal structure of FeSe and its interaction with electronic degrees of freedom using ultrafast electron diffraction, x-ray pair distribution function analysis, and transmission electron microscopy and find a significant lattice response to local nematicity. The study demonstrates how local lattice distortions, which exist even at temperatures above the nematic phase transition, can be released by photoexcitation, leading to an enhancement of the crystalline order. The observed local atomic structures and their out-of-equilibrium behavior unravel a sophisticated coupling between the lattice and nematic order parameter in FeSe.

Imaging the Photochemical Ring-Opening of 1,3-Cyclohexadiene by Ultrafast Electron Diffraction

The ultrafast photoinduced ring-opening of 1,3-cyclohexadiene constitutes a textbook example of electrocyclic reactions in organic chemistry and a model for photobiological reactions in vitamin D synthesis. Here, we present direct and unambiguous observation of the ring-opening reaction path on the femtosecond timescale and sub-Ångström length scale by megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction. We follow the carbon-carbon bond dissociation and the structural opening of the 1,3-cyclohexadiene ring by direct measurement of time-dependent changes in the distribution of interatomic distances. We observe a substantial acceleration of the ring-opening motion after internal conversion to the ground state due to steepening of the electronic potential gradient towards the product minima. The ring-opening motion transforms into rotation of the terminal ethylene groups in the photoproduct 1,3,5-hexatriene on the sub-picosecond timescale. Our work demonstrates the potential of megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction to elucidate photochemical reaction paths in organic chemistry.

Terahertz-based attosecond metrology of relativistic electron beams

Photons, electrons, and their interplay are at the heart of photonic devices and modern instruments for ultrafast science [1-10]. Nowadays, electron beams of the highest intensity and brightness are created by photoemission with short laser pulses, and then accelerated and manipulated using GHz radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. The electron beams are utilized to directly map photoinduced dynamics with ultrafast electron scattering techniques, or further engaged for coherent radiation production at up to hard X-ray wavelengths [11-13]. The push towards improved timing precision between the electron beams and pump optical pulses though, has been stalled at the few tens of femtosecond level, due to technical challenges with synchronizing the high power rf fields with optical sources. Here, we demonstrate attosecond electron metrology using laser-generated single-cycle THz radiation, which is intrinsically phase locked to the optical drive pulses, to manipulate multi-MeV relativistic electron beams. Control and single-shot characterization of bright electron beams at this unprecedented level open up many new opportunities for atomic visualization.

Enhanced energy gain in a dielectric laser accelerator using a tilted pulse front laser

Using an 800 nm, 45 fs pulse-front-tilted laser we demonstrate a record 315 keV energy gain in a dual grating dielectric laser accelerator (DLA) and average accelerating gradients of 560 MV/m over 0.5 mm. These results open a new regime in DLA characterized by significant evolution of the beam distribution in the longitudinal phase space, corresponding to >1/4 of a synchrotron oscillation. By tilting the laser wavefront we control the resonant velocity of the DLA and observe a net energy gain, indicating that a tapered optical phase could be used to achieve very high energy gain.

Optical design for increased interaction length in a high gradient dielectric laser accelerator

We present a methodology for designing and measuring pulse front tilt in an ultrafast laser for use in dielectric laser acceleration. Previous research into dielectric laser accelerating modules has focused on measuring high accelerating gradients in novel structures, but has done so only for short electron-laser coupling lengths. Here we demonstrate an optical design to extend the laser-electron interaction to 1mm.

Artifacts in magnetic spirals retrieved by transport of intensity equation (TIE)

The artifacts in the magnetic structures reconstructed from Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) images with TIE method have been analyzed in detail. The processing for the simulated images of Bloch and Neel spirals indicated that the improper parameters in TIE may overestimate the high frequency information and induce some false features in the retrieved images. The specimen tilting will further complicate the analysis of the images because the LTEM image contrast is not the result of the magnetization distribution within the specimen but the integral projection pattern of the magnetic induction filling the entire space including the specimen.

Beyond a phenomenological description of magnetostriction

We use ultrafast x-ray and electron diffraction to disentangle spin-lattice coupling of granular FePt in the time domain. The reduced dimensionality of single-crystalline FePt nanoparticles leads to strong coupling of magnetic order and a highly anisotropic three-dimensional lattice motion characterized by a- and b-axis expansion and c-axis contraction. The resulting increase of the FePt lattice tetragonality, the key quantity determining the energy barrier between opposite FePt magnetization orientations, persists for tens of picoseconds. These results suggest a novel approach to laser-assisted magnetic switching in future data storage applications.

Superconducting epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-δ on SrTiO3 buffered Si (001)

Thin films of optimally-doped (001)-oriented YBa2Cu3O7-δ are epitaxially integrated on silicon (001) through growth on a single crystalline SrTiO3 buffer. The former is grown using pulsed-laser deposition and the latter is grown on Si using oxide molecular beam epitaxy. The single crystal nature of the SrTiO3 buffer enables high quality YBa2Cu3O7-δ films exhibiting high transition temperatures to be integrated on Si. For a 30 nm thick SrTiO3 buffer, 50 nm thick YBa2Cu3O7-δ films that exhibit a transition temperature of ~ 93 K, and a narrow transition width (< 5 K) are achieved. The integration of single crystalline YBa2Cu3O7-δ on Si (001) paves the way for the potential exploration of cuprate materials in a variety of applications.

Nonlinear response in high-field dielectric laser accelerators

Laser powered dielectric structures achieve high-gradient particle acceleration by taking advantage of modern laser technology capable of producing electric fields in excess of 10GV/m. These fields can drive the bulk dielectric beyond its linear response, and break the phase synchronicity between the accelerating field and the electrons. We show how control of the pulse dispersion can be used to compensate the effect of self-phase modulation and maximize the energy gain in the laser accelerator. In our experiment, a high brightness 8MeV e-beam is used to probe accelerating fields of 1.8GV/m in a 'grating-reset' dielectric structure illuminated by a 45fs laser pulse with a fluence of 0.7J/cm$^2$.

The origin of atomic displacements in HAADF images of the tilted specimen

The effects of the tilt of the crystallographic orientation with respect to an incident electron probe on high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) imaging in aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) have been investigated with experiments and simulations. A small specimen tilt can lead to unequal deviations of different atom species in the HAADF image and result in further relative displacement between anions and cations. Simulated HAADF images also confirm that the crystal tilt causes an artifact in atom polarization as well. The effect is derived from the scattering ability of different atoms.

Femtosecond mega-electron-volt electron microdiffraction

Instruments to visualize transient structural changes of inhomogeneous materials on the nanometer scale with atomic spatial and temporal resolution are demanded to advance materials science, bioscience, and fusion sciences. One such technique is femtosecond electron microdiffraction, in which a short pulse of electrons with femtosecond-scale duration is focused into a micron-scale spot and used to obtain diffraction images to resolve ultrafast structural dynamics over localized crystalline domain. In this letter, we report the experimental demonstration of time-resolved mega-electron-volt electron microdiffraction which achieves a 5 μm root-mean-square (rms) beam size on the sample and a 100 fs rms temporal resolution. Using pulses of 10k electrons at 4.2 MeV energy with a normalized emittance 3 nm-rad, we obtained high quality diffraction from a single 10 μm paraffin (C_44 H_90) crystal. The phonon softening mode in optical-pumped polycrystalline Bi was also time-resolved, demonstrating the temporal resolution limits of our instrument design. This new characterization capability will open many research opportunities in material and biological sciences.

Stacking order dynamic in the quasi-two-dimensional dichalcogenide 1T-TaS$_2$ probed with MeV ultrafast electron diffraction

Transitions between different charge density wave (CDW) states in quasi-two-dimensional materials may be accompanied also by changes in the inter-layer stacking of the CDW. Using MeV ultrafast electron diffraction, the out-of-plane stacking order dynamics in the quasi-two-dimensional dichalcogenide 1T-TaS$_2$ is investigated for the first time. From the intensity of the CDW satellites aligned around the commensurate $l$ = 1/6 characteristic stacking order, it is found out that this phase disappears with a 0.5 ps time constant. Simultaneously, in the same experiment, the emergence of the incommensurate phase, with a slightly slower 2.0 ps time constant, is determined from the intensity of the CDW satellites aligned around the incommensurate $l$ = 1/3 characteristic stacking order. These results might be of relevance in understanding the metallic character of the laser-induced metastable "hidden" state recently discovered in this compound.

Experimental access to Transition Distribution Amplitudes with the PANDA experiment at FAIR

Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($πN$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $πN$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cosθ_{π^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. (.../...)

Feasibility study for the measurement of $πN$ TDAs at PANDA in $\bar{p}p\to J/ψπ^0$

The exclusive charmonium production process in $\bar{p}p$ annihilation with an associated $π^0$ meson $\bar{p}p\to J/ψπ^0$ is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the $J/ψ\to e^+e^-$ decay channel with the PANDA (AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the $\bar{p}p\toπ^+π^-π^0$ and $\bar{p}p\to J/ψπ^0π^0$ reactions are performed with PandaRoot, the simulation and analysis software framework of the PANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at PANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to π^+ π^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Variability of structural and electronic properties of bulk and monolayer Si2Te3

Since the emergence of monolayer graphene as a promising two-dimensional material, many other monolayer and few-layer materials have been investigated extensively. An experimental study of few-layer Si2Te3 was recently reported, showing that the material has diverse properties for potential applications in Si-based devices ranging from fully integrated thermoelectrics to optoelectronics to chemical sensors. This material has a unique layered structure: it has a hexagonal closed-packed Te sublattice, with Si dimers occupying octahedral intercalation sites. Here we report a theoretical study of this material in both bulk and monolayer form, unveiling a fascinating array of diverse properties arising from reorientations of the silicon dimers between planes of Te atoms. The lattice constant varies up to 5% and the band gap varies up to 40% depending on dimer orientations. The monolayer band gap is 0.4 eV larger than the bulk-phase value for the lowest-energy configuration of Si dimers. These properties are, in principle, controllable by temperature and strain, making Si2T3 a promising candidate material for nanoscale mechanical, optical, and memristive devices.

New Optical Gating Technique for Detection of Electric Field Waveforms with Subpicosecond Resolution

We report on the new optical gating technique used for the direct photoconductive detection of short pulses of terahertz radiation with the resolution up to 250 femtoseconds. The femtosecond optical laser pulse time delayed with respect to the THz pulse generated a large concentration of the electron hole pairs in the AlGaAs/InGaAs High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) drastically increasing the conductivity on the femtosecond scale and effectively shorting the source and drain. This optical gating quenched the response of the plasma waves launched by the THz pulse and allowed us to reproduce the waveform of the THz pulse by varying the time delay between the THz and quenching optical pulses. The results are in excellent agreement with the electro-optic effect measurements and with our hydrodynamic model that predicts the ultra-fast transistor plasmonic response at the time scale much shorter than the electron transit time, in full agreement with the measured data.

Direct measurement of non-equilibrium phonon occupations in femtosecond laser heated Au films

We use ultrafast electron diffraction to detect the temporal evolution of phonon populations in femtosecond laser-excited ultrathin single-crystalline gold films. From the time-dependence of the Debye-Waller factor we extract a 4.7 ps time-constant for the increase in mean-square atomic displacements. We show from the increase of the diffuse scattering intensity that the population of phonon modes near the X and K points in the Au fcc Brillouin zone grows with timescales of 2.3 and 2.9 ps, respectively, faster than the Debye-Waller average. We find that thermalization continues within the initially non-equilibrium phonon distribution after 10 ps. The observed momentum dependent timescale of phonon populations is in contrast to what is usually predicted in a two-temperature model.
