Proton radiography of magnetic field produced by ultra-intense laser irradiating capacity-coil target

Ultra-intense ultra-short laser is firstly used to irradiate the capacity-coil target to generate magnetic field. The spatial structure and temporal evolution of huge magnetic fields were studied with time-gated proton radiography method. A magnetic flux density of 40T was measured by comparing the proton deflection and particle track simulations. Although the laser pulse duration is only 30fs, the generated magnetic field can last for over 100 picoseconds. The energy conversion efficiency from laser to magnetic field can reach as high as ~20%. The results indicate that tens of tesla (T) magnetic field could be produced in many ultra intense laser facilities around the world, and higher magnetic field could be produced by picosecond lasers.

Generation of high-energy monoenergetic heavy ion beams by radiation pressure acceleration of ultra-intense laser pulses

A novel radiation pressure acceleration (RPA) regime of heavy ion beams from laser-irradiated ultrathin foils is proposed by self-consistently taking into account the ionization dynamics. In this regime, the laser intensity is required to match with the large ionization energy gap when the successive ionization of high-Z atoms passing the noble gas configurations [such as removing an electron from the helium-like charge state $(\text{Z}-2)^+$ to $(\text{Z}-1)^+$]. While the target ions in the laser wing region are ionized to low charge states and undergo rapid dispersions due to instabilities, a self-organized, stable RPA of highly-charged heavy ion beam near the laser axis is achieved. It is also found that a large supplement of electrons produced from ionization helps preserving stable acceleration. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that a monoenergetic $\text{Al}^{13+}$ beam with peak energy $1\ \text{GeV}$ and energy spread of $5\%$ is obtained by lasers at intensity $7\times10^{20}\ \text{W}/\text{cm}^2$.

Suppression of transverse ablative Rayleigh-Taylor-like instability in the hole-boring radiation pressure acceleration by using elliptically polarized laser pulses

It is shown that the transverse Rayleigh-Taylor-like (RT) instability in the hole boring radiation pressure acceleration can be suppressed by using elliptically polarized (EP) laser. A moderate ${J}\times{B}$ heating of the EP laser will thermalize the local electrons, which leads to the transverse diffusion of ions, suppressing the short wavelength perturbations of RT instability. A proper condition of polarization ratio is obtained analytically for the given laser intensity and plasma density. The idea is confirmed by two dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulations, showing that the ion beam driven by the EP laser is more concentrated and intense compared with that of the circularly polarized laser.

Bright gamma-rays from betatron resonance acceleration in near critical density plasma

We show that electron betatron resonance acceleration by an ultra-intense ultra-short laser pulse in a near critical density plasma works as a high-brightness gamma-ray source. Compared with laser plasma X-ray sources in under-dense plasma, near critical density plasma provides three benefits for electron radiation: more radiation electrons, larger transverse amplitude, and higher betatron oscillation frequency. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that, by using a 7.4J laser pulse, 8.3mJ radiation with critical photon energy 1MeV is emitted. The critical photon energy $E_c$ increases with the incident laser energy %faster than a linear relation. $W_I$ as $E_c \propto W_I^{1.5}$, and the corresponding photon number is proportional to $W_I$. A simple analytical synchrotron-like radiation model is built, which can explain the simulation results.

Dynamics of ultra-intense circularly polarized solitons under inhomogeneous plasmas

The dynamics of the ultra-intense circularly polarized solitons under inhomogeneous plasmas are examined. The interaction is modeled by the Maxwell and relativistic hydrodynamic equations and is solved with fully implicit energy-conserving numerical scheme. It is shown that a propagating weak soliton can be decreased and reflected by increasing plasma background, which is consistent with the existing studies based on hypothesis of weak density response. However it is found that ultra-intense soliton is well trapped and kept still when encountering increasing background. Probably, this founding can be applied for trapping and amplifying high-intensity laser-fields.

A new ignition scheme using hybrid indirect-direct drive for inertial confinement fusion

A new hybrid indirect-direct-drive ignition scheme is proposed for inertial confinement fusion: a cryogenic capsule encased in a hohlraum is first compressed symmetrically by indirect-drive x-rays, and then accelerated and ignited by both direct-drive lasers and x-rays. A steady high-density plateau newly formed between the radiation and electron ablation fronts suppresses the rarefaction at the radiation ablation front and greatly enhances the drive pressure. Meanwhile, multiple shock reflections at the fuel/hot-spot interface are prevented during capsule deceleration. Thus rapid ignition and burn are realized. In comparison with the conventional indirect drive, the hybrid drive implodes the capsule with a higher velocity ($\sim4.3\times10^7$ cm/s) and a much lower convergence ratio ($\sim$25), and the growth of hydrodynamic instabilities is significantly reduced, especially at the fuel/hot-spot interface.

Suppressing longitudinal double-layer oscillations by using elliptically polarized laser pulses in the hole-boring radiation pressure acceleration regime

It is shown that well collimated mono-energetic ion beams with a large particle number can be generated in the hole-boring radiation pressure acceleration regime by using an elliptically polarized laser pulse with appropriate theoretically determined laser polarization ratio. Due to the $\bm{J}\times\bm{B}$ effect, the double-layer charge separation region is imbued with hot electrons that prevent ion pileup, thus suppressing the double-layer oscillations. The proposed mechanism is well confirmed by Particle-in-Cell simulations, and after suppressing the longitudinal double-layer oscillations, the ion beams driven by the elliptically polarized lasers own much better energy spectrum than those by circularly polarized lasers.

The breather like penetration of the ultra-short linearly polarized laser into over-dense plasmas

Relativistic electromagnetic penetration behavior is reexamined in the relativistic transparency region. The interaction is modeled by the relativistic hydrodynamic equations coupled with the full system of Maxwell equations, which are solved by a fully implicit energy-conserving numerical scheme. For the first time, we have studied the penetration behavior through ultra-short circularly polarized and linearly polarized laser pulses interaction with over-dense plasmas. It is shown that for the ultra-short circularly polarized laser penetration occurs through a soliton like behavior, which is quite consistent with the existing studies. However, we have found that the ultra-short linearly polarized laser penetrates through a breather like behavior, and there is an energy transition mechanism with a frequency $2ω_0$ between the penetrated breather like structure and the background plasmas. A qualitative interpretation has been given to describe this mechanism of energy exchange.

Stabilizing transverse ablative Rayleigh Taylor like instability by using elliptically polarized laser pulses in the hole-boring radiation pressure acceleration regime

It is shown that the transverse Rayleigh Taylor like instability can be well stabilized by using elliptically polarized laser in the hole boring radiation pressure acceleration regime. The $\bm{J}\times\bm{B}$ effect of the laser will thermalize the local electrons and support a transverse diffusion mechanism of the ions, resulting in the stabilization of the short wavelength perturbations, which is quite similar to the ablative Rayleigh Taylor instability in the initial confinement fusion research. The proper range of polarization ratio is obtained from a theoretical model for the given laser intensity and plasma density. The stabilization mechanism is well confirmed by two dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulations, and the ion beam driven by the elliptically polarized laser is more concentrated and intense compared with that of the circularly polarized laser.

Laser-driven collimated tens-GeV monoenergetic protons from mass-limited target plus preformed channel

Proton acceleration by ultra-intense laser pulse irradiating a target with cross-section smaller than the laser spot size and connected to a parabolic density channel is investigated. The target splits the laser into two parallel propagating parts, which snowplow the back-side plasma electrons along their paths, creating two adjacent parallel wakes and an intense return current in the gap between them. The radiation-pressure pre-accelerated target protons trapped in the wake fields now undergo acceleration as well as collimation by the quasistatic wake electrostatic and magnetic fields. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation shows that stable long-distance acceleration can be realized, and a 30 fs monoenergetic ion beam of > 10 GeV peak energy and < 2degree divergence can be produced by a 9.8 *10^21 W/cm2 circularly polarized laser pulse.

High-quality proton bunch from laser interaction with a gas-filled cone target

Generation of high-energy proton bunch from interaction of an intense short circularly polarized(CP) laser pulse with a gas-filled cone target(GCT) is investigated using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The GCT target consists of a hollow cone filled with near-critical gas-plasma and a thin foil attached to the tip of the cone. It is observed that as the laser pulse propagates in the gas-plasma, the nonlinear focusing will result in an enhancement of the laser pulse intensity. It is shown that a large number of energetic electrons are generated from the gas-plasma and accelerated by the self-focused laser pulse. The energetic electrons then transports through the foil, forming a backside sheath field which is stronger than that produced by a simple planar target. A quasi-monoenergetic proton beam with maximum energy of 181 MeV is produced from this GCT target irradiated by a CP laser pulse at an intensity of $2.6\times10^{20}W/cm^2$, which is nearly three times higher compared to simple planar target(67MeV).

Nonlinear evolution of the ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability with preheating

Evolution of the single-mode ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability in the presence of preheating is investigated numerically. It is found that the instability evolution depends strongly on the preheating length $L$ in front of the ablation-front interface. For weak preheating ($L/L_{\rm SH}\leq f_0$, where $L_{\rm SH}$ is the Spitzer-Harm length and $f_0\sim 20$ is a critical value), the linear growth rate has a sharp maximum and a secondary spike-bubble structure is generated. Interaction of this growing structure with the master spike-bubble leads to rupture of the latter. However, for strong preheating ($L/L_{\rm SH}>20$), the linear growth rate has no sharp maximum and no secondary spike-bubble is generated. Instead, the master spike-bubble evolves into an elongated jet. These results are interpreted in terms of the evolution and interaction of the instability-generated harmonic modes.

Spectroscopic and Photometric Observations of Unidentified Ultraviolate Variable Objects in GUVV-2 Catalog

An NUV-optical diagram made for sources from the secend Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Ultraviolet Variability (GUVV-2) Catalog provide us a method to tentatively classify the unknown GUVV2 sources by their NUV-optical magnitudes. On the purpose of testing the correctness and generality of the method, we carry out a program on the spectroscopic observations of the unidentified GUVV2 sources. The spectroscopic identification for these 37 sources are 19 type -A to -F stars, 10 type -G to -K stars and 7 M dwarf stars together with an AGN. We also present the light curves in R-band for two RR Lyrae star candidates selected from the NUV-optical diagram, both of which perform cyclic variations. Combining there light curves and colors, we classify them as RR Lyrae stars. To confirm the results, we shows a color-color diagram for the 37 newly spectroscopically identified objects compared with the previously identified ones, which manifests good consistence with our former results, indicating that the ultroviolet variable sources can be initially classified by their NUV/optical color-color diagram.

Generating sub-TeV quasi-monoenergetic proton beam by an ultra-relativistically intense laser in the snowplow regime

Snowplow ion acceleration is presented, using an ultra-relativistically intense laser pulse irradi- ating on a combination target, where the relativistic proton beam generated by radiation pressure acceleration can be trapped and accelerated by the laser plasma wakefield. The theory suggests that sub-TeV quasi-monoenergetic proton bunches can be generated by a centimeter-scale laser wakefield accelerator, driven by a circularly polarized (CP) laser pulse with the peak intensity of 10^23W/cm^2 and duration of 116fs.

Modulations to molecular high order harmonic generation by electron de Broglie wave

We present a new theory that the molecular high order harmonic generation in an intense laser field is determined by molecular internal symmetry and momentum distribution of the tunneling-ionized electron. The molecular internal symmetry determines the quantum interference form of the returning electron inside the molecule. The electron momentum distribution determines the relative interference strength of each individual electron de Broglie wave. All individual electron de Broglie wave interferences add together to collectively modulate the molecular high harmonic generation. We specifically discuss the suppression of the generation on adjacent harmonic orders and the dependence of molecular high harmonic generation on laser intensities and molecular axis alignment. Our theoretical results are in good consistency with the experimental observations.

A Sample of IRAS Infrared-Selected Seyfert 1.5 Galaxies: Infrared-Color $α(60,25)$ Dominated Eigenvector 1

The well-documented E1 relationships are first extended to infrared color $α(60,25)$ and flux ratio [OIII]/H$β_{\rm{n}}$ by comparing emission line properties to continuum properties in infrared wavelength. Both direct correlations and a principle component analysis are used in a sample of 50 IRAS IR-selected Seyfert 1.5 galaxies. In addition to confirm the correlations of E1 in Boroson & Green (1992), our Eigenvector 1 turns out to be dominated by mid-infrared color $α$(60,25), and most strongly effected by RFe, [OIII]/H$β_{\rm{n}}$, and EW(H$β_{\rm{b}}$). Our analysis indicate that the objects with large E1 tend to co-existent with relatively young nuclear stellar populations, which implies that the E1 is related with nuclear starformation history. The IR-dominated Eigenvector 1 can be, therefore, inferred to be interpreted as ``age'' of AGN. In confirmation of Xu et al. (2003), it is clear that the extreme Seyfert galaxies with both large RFe and large [OIII]/H$β_{\rm{n}}$ are rare in our Universe.

Variability of Optical \ion{Fe}{ii} Complex in Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 4051

The variability of optical FeII blends in NGC 4051 is examined from spectra extracted from the AGN Watch program. In our analysis, the FeII complex are subtracted and measured with the following results. Firstly, the FeII variations were detected in NGC 4051 during a 3-year period. The identified FeII variations followed the variations in continuum closely. Secondly, the EW of FeII is reported to increase with the rising continuum flux, which is consistent with previous claims that there is no convincing Baldwin Effect in optical FeII. Thirdly, by comparing the variations of H$β$ and FeII, we find that RFe scales with continuum flux as $\rm{R_{Fe}\propto (5.0\pm0.8) \log(L/M)}$, which is significantly different from the theoretical expectations. Finally, in six selected Seyferts, four out of five Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies present positive correlation between RFe and the continuum flux. The negative correlations are identified in the remaindng two objects that have relatively broad profiles of H$β$ ($\rm{FWHM>1500 km\ s^{-1}}$).We argue that the difference of electron density of broad line clouds and/or variability behavior of incident high-energy radiation can explain the dichotomy in variability behavior of RFe.

Variability of Broad and Blueshifted Component of [OIII]$λ$5007 in IZWI

Although the existence of asymmetrical profile of [OIII]$λ$5007 has been discovered for ages, its filiation and physics are poorly understood. Two new spectra of I ZWI taken on Nov 16, 2001 and on Dec 3, 2002 were compared with the spectra taken by BG92. Following results are obtained. 1)The certain variations of broad [OIII] during about 10 years separating the observations are identified. The inferred length scale of broad [OIII] emitting region ranges from 0.3pc to 3pc. By assuming a Keplerian motion in emitting region, the material emitting broad [OIII] is likely to be located at transient emission line region, between BLR and NLR. 2)We find a positive relation between the FeII emission and flux of H$β$(or continuum). On the other hand, the parameter RFe decreases with ionizing continuum marginally. 3)We detect a low ionized NLR in I ZWI, because of the low flux ratios $\rm{[OIII]_{n}/Hβ_{n}}$($\sim1.7$).
