Band structure reconstruction in the topological semimetal PrAlSi

The interplay between nontrivial topology, magnetism and strong correlation has generated considerable research interest in condensed matter physics. The topological RAlX (R = rare earth ; X = Si and Ge) family has provided an excellent platform for exploring these complex interactions. Here, we performed infrared spectroscopy measurements on the ferromagnetic (FM) topological semimetal PrAlSi, in oder to investigate the impact of FM orderings on the topological band structure. We find that the optical conductivity associated with the Dirac/Weyl cones exhibits two segments of linearly increasing parts in the normal state, connected by a kink feature at around 1 960 cm-1. By entering the FM state, however, an additional linear-growing segment shows up in between the original ones, suggesting that the band structure is reconstructed. We propose that these observations can be effectively explained by a scenario where the Dirac/Weyl nodes are split into pairs of Weyl nodes with lower degeneracy, due to the time reversal symmetry breaking induced by the FM ordering. This band structure reconstruction also leads to a sudden enhancement of the itinerant carrier density. In addition, the effective mass of the itinerant carriers are estimated to be two orders of magnitude smaller than the free electron mass, providing a rare case where nearly all the free carriers exhibit behaviors characteristic of relativistic Dirac or Weyl fermions. Our results demonstrate an compelling example of the strong interaction between magnetic order and topological band structures, which opens up new avenues for exploring novel topological materials and their potential applications.

A multi-cubic-kilometre neutrino telescope in the western Pacific Ocean

Next-generation neutrino telescopes with significantly improved sensitivity are required to pinpoint the sources of the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux detected by IceCube and uncover the century-old puzzle of cosmic ray origins. A detector near the equator will provide a unique viewpoint of the neutrino sky, complementing IceCube and other neutrino telescopes in the Northern Hemisphere. Here we present results from an expedition to the north-eastern region of the South China Sea, in the western Pacific Ocean. A favorable neutrino telescope site was found on an abyssal plain at a depth of $\sim$ 3.5km. At depths below 3km, the sea current speed, water absorption and scattering lengths for Cherenkov light, were measured to be $v_{\mathrm{c}}<$10cm/s, $λ_{\mathrm{abs} }\simeq$ 27m and $λ_{\mathrm{sca} }\simeq$ 63m, respectively. Accounting for these measurements, we present the design and expected performance of a next-generation neutrino telescope, TRopIcal DEep-sea Neutrino Telescope (TRIDENT). With its advanced photon-detection technology and large dimensions, TRIDENT expects to observe the IceCube steady source candidate NGC 1068 with 5$σ$ significance within 1 year of operation. This level of sensitivity will open a new arena for diagnosing the origin of cosmic rays and probing fundamental physics over astronomical baselines.

Optical probe on doping modulation of magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

The magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ is extensively investigated due to its giant anomalous Hall effect (AHE).Recent studies demonstrate that the AHE can be effectively tuned by multi-electron Ni doping. To reveal the underlying mechanism of this significant manipulation,it is crucial to explore the band structure modification caused by Ni doping. Here,we study the electrodynamics of both pristine and Ni-doped Co$_{3-x}$Ni$_x$Sn$_2$S$_2$ with $x=$0, 0.11 and 0.17 by infrared spectroscopy. We find that the inverted energy gap around the Fermi level($E_{F}$) gets smaller at $x=$0.11,which is supposed to enhance the Berry curvature and therefore increase the AHE.Then $E_{F}$ moves out of this gap at $x=$0.17. Additionally, the low temperature carrier density is demonstrated to increase monotonically upon doping, which is different from previous Hall measurement results. We also observe the evidences of band broadening and exotic changes of high-energy interband transitions caused by doping. Our results provide detailed information about the band structure of Co$_{3-x}$Ni$_x$Sn$_2$S$_2$ at different doping levels, which will help to guide further studies on the chemical tuning of AHE.

Optical study of three-dimensional Weyl semimetal Mn$_3$Sn

Three-dimensional (3D) Weyl semimetal Mn$_3$Sn has attracted tremendous attention due to its great application potential. However, the complex magnetic structures at different temperature intervals make it extremely difficult to unravel the underlying electronic structures of Mn$_3$Sn. Here, we perform temperature-dependent optical spectroscopy measurements on single crystalline Mn$_3$Sn to investigate its charge dynamics. We find that both of the optical reflectivity $R(ω)$ and conductivity $σ_1(ω)$ evolve very smoothly across the magnetic phase transition at $T_M$ = 285 K, where the giant anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at room temperature drops significantly. Furthermore, two linearly increasing segments of $σ_1(ω)$ are observed in the whole temperature range from 300 K to 10 K, indicating that the existence of Weyl fermions is very robust against the magnetic phase transition. In addition, the Weyl points closest to the Fermi level $E_F$ are identified to be located about 101 meV away from $E_F$ at 10 K, and the associated Fermi velocity is about 2.55 $\times 10^7$ cm/s. Our results reveal that the phase transition at $T_M$ only generates subtle modification to the band structure, which helps to further uncover the mechanism of the dramatic change of AHE in Mn$_3$Sn.

Superconductivity and Strong Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior in Single-Crystal Ir3Te8

We observe superconductivity below a critical temperature TC = 1.8 K in single-crystal Ir3Te8, which also exhibits normal-state diamagnetism and a linear temperature dependence of electrical resistivity for a wide temperature interval, 20 K < T < 700 K. Single-crystal Ir3Te8 also undergoes a structural phase transition at TS = 350 K from a cubic (above TS) to a rhombohedral lattice below TS. Our first-principles electronic structure calculations reveal two bands crossing the Fermi level; despite the three-dimensional lattice, one band is quasi-two-dimensional, and is responsible for the observed diamagnetism and structure transition. The strong non-Fermi-liquid behavior characterized by the observed linearity in resistivity in such a nonmagnetic state suggests novel physics in this newly discovered superconductor.
