Assembly and Installation of the Daya Bay Antineutrino Detectors

The Daya Bay reactor antineutrino experiment is designed to make a precision measurement of the neutrino mixing angle theta13, and recently made the definitive discovery of its nonzero value. It utilizes a set of eight, functionally identical antineutrino detectors to measure the reactor flux and spectrum at baselines of 300 - 2000m from the Daya Bay and Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plants. The Daya Bay antineutrino detectors were built in an above-ground facility and deployed side-by-side at three underground experimental sites near and far from the nuclear reactors. This configuration allows the experiment to make a precision measurement of reactor antineutrino disappearance over km-long baselines and reduces relative systematic uncertainties between detectors and nuclear reactors. This paper describes the assembly and installation of the Daya Bay antineutrino detectors.

The index of geometric operators on Lie groupoids

We revisit the cohomological index theorem for elliptic elements in the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie groupoid previously proved by the authors. We prove a Thom isomorphism for Lie algebroids which enables us to rewrite the "topological side" of the index theorem. This results in index formulae for Lie groupoid analogues of the familiar geometric operators on manifolds such as the signature and Dirac operator expressed in terms of the usual characteristic classes in Lie algebroid cohomology.

Geometry of orbit spaces of proper Lie groupoids

In this paper, we study geometric properties of quotient spaces of proper Lie groupoids. First, we construct a natural stratification on such spaces using an extension of the slice theorem for proper Lie groupoids of Weinstein and Zung. Next, we show the existence of an appropriate metric on the groupoid which gives the associated Lie algebroid the structure of a singular riemannian foliation. With this metric, the orbit space inherits a natural length space structure whose properties are studied. Moreover, we show that the orbit space of a proper Lie groupoid can be triangulated. Finally, we prove a de Rham theorem for the complex of basic differential forms on a proper Lie groupoid.

Quantization of Whitney functions

We propose to study deformation quantizations of Whitney functions. To this end, we extend the notion of a deformation quantization to algebras of Whitney functions over a singular set, and show the existence of a deformation quantization of Whitney functions over a closed subset of a symplectic manifold. Under the assumption that the underlying symplectic manifold is analytic and the singular subset subanalytic, we determine that the Hochschild and cyclic homology of the deformed algebra of Whitney functions over the subanalytic subset coincide with the Whitney--de Rham cohomology. Finally, we note how an algebraic index theorem for Whitney functions can be derived.

The localized longitudinal index theorem for Lie groupoids and the van Est map

We define the "localized index" of longitudinal elliptic operators on Lie groupoids associated to Lie algebroid cohomology classes. We derive a topological expression for these numbers using the algebraic index theorem for Poisson manifolds on the dual of the Lie algebroid. Underlying the definition and computation of the localized index, is an action of the Hopf algebroid of jets around the unit space, and the characteristic map it induces on Lie algebroid cohomology. This map can be globalized to differentiable groupoid cohomology, giving a definition as well as a computation of the "global index". The correspondence between the "global" and "localized" index is given by the van Est map for Lie groupoids.

Effects of mutual excitations in the fusion of carbon isotopes

Fusion data for $^{13}$C+$^{13}$C, $^{12}$C+$^{13}$C and $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C are analyzed by coupled-channels calculations that are based on the M3Y+repulsion, double-folding potential. The fusion is determined by ingoing-wave-boundary conditions (IWBC) that are imposed at the minimum of the pocket in the entrance channel potential. Quadrupole and octupole transitions to low-lying states in projectile and target are included in the calculations, as well as mutual excitations of these states. The effect of one-neutron transfer is also considered but the effect is small in the measured energy regime. It is shown that mutual excitations to high-lying states play a very important role in developing a comprehensive and consistent description of the measurements. Thus the shapes of the calculated cross sections for $^{12}$C+$^{13}$C and $^{13}$C+$^{13}$C are in good agreement with the data. The fusion cross sections for $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C determined by the IWBC are generally larger than the measured cross sections but they are consistent with the maxima of some of the observed peak cross sections. They are therefore expected to provide an upper limit for the extrapolation into the low-energy regime of interest to astrophysics.

Upper Limit on the molecular resonance strengths in the ${}^{12}$C+${}^{12}$C fusion reaction

Carbon burning is a crucial process for a number of important astrophysical scenarios. The lowest measured energy is around E$_{\rm c.m.}$=2.1 MeV, only partially overlapping with the energy range of astrophysical interest. The currently adopted reaction rates are based on an extrapolation which is highly uncertain because of potential resonances existing in the unmeasured energy range and the complication of the effective nuclear potential. By comparing the cross sections of the three carbon isotope fusion reactions, ${}^{12}$C+${}^{12}$C, ${}^{12}$C+${}^{13}$C and ${}^{13}$C+${}^{13}$C, we have established an upper limit on the molecular resonance strengths in ${}^{12}$C+${}^{12}$C fusion reaction. The preliminary results are presented and the impact on nuclear astrophysics is discussed.

Cyclic cocycles on deformation quantizations and higher index theorems

We construct a nontrivial cyclic cocycle on the Weyl algebra of a symplectic vector space. Using this cyclic cocycle we construct an explicit, local, quasi-isomorphism from the complex of differential forms on a symplectic manifold to the complex of cyclic cochains of any formal deformation quantization thereof. We give a new proof of Nest-Tsygan's algebraic higher index theorem by computing the pairing between such cyclic cocycles and the $K$-theory of the formal deformation quantization. Furthermore, we extend this approach to derive an algebraic higher index theorem on a symplectic orbifold. As an application, we obtain the analytic higher index theorem of Connes--Moscovici and its extension to orbifolds.

On the algebraic index for riemannian étale groupoids

In this paper we construct an explicit quasi-isomorphism to study the cyclic cohomology of a deformation quantization over a riemannian étale groupoid. Such a quasi-isomorphism allows us to propose a general algebraic index problem for riemannian étale groupoids. We discuss solutions to that index problem when the groupoid is proper or defined by a constant Dirac structure on a 3-dim torus.

Equivariant Lefschetz number of differential operators

Let $G$ be a compact Lie group acting on a compact complex manifold $M$. We prove a trace density formula for the $G$-Lefschetz number of a differential operator on $M$. We generalize Engeli and Felder's recent results to orbifolds.

Orbifold cup products and ring structures on Hochschild cohomologies

In this paper we study the Hochschild cohomology ring of convolution algebras associated to orbifolds, as well as their deformation quantizations. In the first case the ring structure is given in terms of a wedge product on twisted polyvectorfields on the inertia orbifold. After deformation quantization, the ring structure defines a product on the cohomology of the inertia orbifold. We study the relation between this product and an $S^1$-equivariant version of the Chen--Ruan product. In particular, we give a de Rham model for this equivariant orbifold cohomology.

Fusion-Fission of 16O+197Au at Sub-Barrier Energies

The recent discovery of heavy-ion fusion hindrance at far sub-barrier energies has focused much attention on both experimental and theoretical studies of this phenomenon. Most of the experimental evidence comes from medium-heavy systems such as Ni+Ni to Zr+Zr, for which the compound system decays primarily by charged-particle evaporation. In order to study heavier systems, it is, however, necessary to measure also the fraction of the decay that goes into fission fragments. In the present work we have, therefore, measured the fission cross section of 16O+197Au down to unprecedented far sub-barrier energies using a large position sensitive PPAC placed at backward angles. The preliminary cross sections will be discussed and compared to earlier studies at near-barrier energies. No conclusive evidence for sub-barrier hindrance was found, probably because the measurements were not extended to sufficiently low energies.

Scattering of $^{7}$Be and $^{8}$B and the astrophysical S$_{17}$ factor

Measurements of scattering of $^{7}$Be at 87 MeV on a melamine (C$_{3}$N$ _{6}$H$_{6}$) target and of $^{8}$B at 95 MeV on C were performed. For $^{7}$Be the angular range was extended over previous measurements and monitoring of the intensity of the radioactive beam was improved. The measurements allowed us to check and improve the optical model potentials used in the incoming and outgoing channels for the analysis of existing data on the proton transfer reaction $^{14}$N($^{7}$Be,$^{8}$B)$^{13}$C. The resultslead to an updated determination of the asymptotic normalization coefficient for the virtual decay $^{8}$B $\to$ $^{7}$Be + $p$. We find a slightly larger value, $C_{tot}^{2}(^{8}B)=0.466\pm 0.047$ fm$^{-1}$, for the melamine target. This implies an astrophysical factor, $S_{17}(0)=18.0\pm 1.8$ eV$\cdot$b, for the solar neutrino generating reaction $^{7}$Be($p$,$γ$)$^{8}$B.

The stellar (n,gamma) cross section of 62Ni

The 62Ni(n,gamma)63Ni(t_1/2=100+-2 yrs) reaction plays an important role in the control of the flow path of the slow neutron-capture (s-) nucleosynthesis process. We have measured for the first time the total cross section of this reaction for a quasi-Maxwellian (kT = 25 keV) neutron flux. The measurement was performed by fast-neutron activation, combined with accelerator mass spectrometry to detect directly the 63Ni product nuclei. The experimental value of 28.4+-2.8 mb, fairly consistent with a recent theoretical estimate, affects the calculated net yield of 62Ni itself and the whole distribution of nuclei with 62<A <90 produced by the weak s-process in massive stars.

Quantum key distribution with 1.25 Gbps clock synchronization

We have demonstrated the exchange of sifted quantum cryptographic key over a 730 meter free-space link at rates of up to 1.0 Mbps, two orders of magnitude faster than previously reported results. A classical channel at 1550 nm operates in parallel with a quantum channel at 845 nm. Clock recovery techniques on the classical channel at 1.25 Gbps enable quantum transmission at up to the clock rate. System performance is currently limited by the timing resolution of our silicon avalanche photodiode detectors. With improved detector resolution, our technique will yield another order of magnitude increase in performance, with existing technology.

High Precision Measurement of the Superallowed 0^+ to 0^+ Beta Decay of ^{22}Mg

The half-life, 3.8755(12) s, and superallowed branching ratio, 0.5315(12), for ^{22}Mg beta-decay have been measured with high precision. The latter depended on gamma-ray intensities being measured with an HPGe detector calibrated for relative efficiencies to an unprecedented 0.15%. Previous precise measurements of 0^+ to 0^+ transitions have been restricted to the nine that populate stable daughter nuclei. No more such cases exist, and any improvement in a critical CKM unitarity test must depend on precise measurements of more exotic nuclei. With this branching-ratio measurement, we show those to be possible for T_z = -1 parents. We obtain a corrected Ft-value of 3071(9) s, in good agreement with expectations.

Asymptotic normalization coefficients for 8B->7Be+p from a study of 8Li->7Li+n

Asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs) for 8Li->7Li+n have been extracted from the neutron transfer reaction 13C(7Li,8Li)12C at 63 MeV. These are related to the ANCs in 8B->7Be+p using charge symmetry. We extract ANCs for 8B that are in very good agreement with those inferred from proton transfer and breakup experiments. We have also separated the contributions from the p_1/2 and p_3/2 components in the transfer. We find the astrophysical factor for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction to be S_17(0)=17.6+/-1.7 eVb. This is the first time that the rate of a direct capture reaction of astrophysical interest has been determined through a measurement of the ANCs in the mirror system.
