The Twist Mode in Atomic Fermi Gases

The quantum-kinetic energy of a finite number of trapped fermionic atoms provides a restoring force for shear motion due to a distortion of the momentum distribution. In analogy to the twist mode of nuclear physics it is proposed that counter-rotating the upper and lower hemisphere of a spherical atomic cloud yields a finite-frequency mode closely related to transverse zero-sound waves in bulk Fermi liquids.

Moment of inertia of a trapped superfluid gas of Fermions

The moment of inertia Q of a trapped superfluid gas of atomic Fermions (6Li) is calculated as a function of the temperature. At zero temperature the moment of inertia takes on the irrotational flow value. Only for T very close to Tc rigid rotation is attained. It is proposed that future measurements of the rotational energy will unambiguously reveal whether the system is in a superfluid state or not.

One-particle exchange in the double folded potential in a semiclassical approximation

The one-particle exchange in the double folded model is analyzed. To this aim the Extended Thomas-Fermi approach to the one-body density matrix is used. The nucleon- nucleon force with Yukawa, Gauss and Coulomb-type form factors are considered. The energy dependence of the exchange part of the double folded potential is investigated and a comparison of the present approach with former ones is carried out.

Extended Thomas-Fermi approximation to the one-body density matrix

The one-body density matrix is derived within the Extended Thomas-Fermi approximation. This has been done starting from the Wigner-Kirkwood distribution function for a non-local single-particle potential. The links between this new approach to the density matrix with former ones available in the literature are widely discussed. The semiclassical Hartree-Fock energy at Extended Thomas-Fermi level is also obtained in the case of a non-local one-body Hamiltonian. Numerical applications are performed using the Gogny and Brink-Boeker effective interactions. The semiclassical binding energies and root mean square radii are compared with the fully quantal ones and with those obtained using the Strutinsky averaged method.

Moment of inertia of a trapped superfluid gas of atomic Fermions

The moment of inertia of a trapped superfluid gas of atomic Fermions (6Li) is calculated as a function of two system parameters: temperature and deformation of the trap. For moderate deformations at zero temperature the moment of inertia takes on the irrotational flow value. Only for T very close to the critical temperature rigid rotation is attained. For very strong trap deformations the moment of inertia approaches its rigid body value even in the superfluid state. It is proposed that future measurements of the rotational energy will unambiguously reveal whether the system is in a superfluid state or not.

Asymmetric semi-infinite nuclear matter: surface and curvature properties in relativistic and non-relativistic models

Surface and curvature properties of asymmetric nuclear matter are studied beyond the proton drip. Using the semiclassical extended Thomas-Fermi method, the calculations are performed in the non-relativistic and relativistic meson field theories (Skyrme forces and non linear sigma-omega parametrizations). First we discuss the bulk equilibrium between the nuclear and drip phases. Next we analyze the asymmetric surface as a function of the bulk neutron excess. We examine local quantities related to the density profiles and, for two definitions of the bulk reference energy, the surface and curvature energy coefficients. The calculation of the curvature energy is carefully treated. The sensitivity of the nuclear surface to the relativistic effects is investigated. Mass formulae useful for arbitray neutron excess are discussed, and their limit at small asymmetries is compared with the liquid droplet model mass formula.
