Electronic Structure, Optical and Dielectric Spectroscopy Study of TbMnO3

Spectral ellipsometry studies of the optical functions, first observation of photoluminescence and low frequency dielectric permittivity investigations were performed in ferroelectric - multiferroic TbMnO3 single crystals. The main attention was paid to electronic band structure, nature of the main optical transitions and unusual behavior of the dielectric permittivity in the region of the sharp narrow temperature maximum, associated with ferroelectric phase transition. It was found that magnitude of the permittivity maximum decreases strongly with frequency, whereas position of maximum is frequency independent. Observed features of polarization response can be described satisfactorily in the frame of on the basis of the Landau-Khalatnikov theory for critical relaxation polarization

Hexagonal phase stabilization and magnetic orders of multiferroic Lu$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$FeO$_3$

Hexagonal LuFeO$_3$ has drawn a lot of research attention due to its contentious room-temperature multiferroicity. Due to the unstability of hexagonal phase in the bulk form, most experimental studies focused on LuFeO$_3$ thin films which can be stabilized by strain using proper substrates. Here we report on the hexagonal phase stabilization, magnetism, and magnetoelectric coupling of bulk LuFeO$_3$ by partial Sc-substitution of Lu. First, our first-principles calculations show that the hexagonal structure can be stabilized by partial Sc substitution, while the multiferroic properties including the noncollinear magnetic order and geometric ferroelectricity remain robustly unaffected. Therefore, Lu$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$FeO$_3$ can act as a platform to check the multiferroicity of LuFeO$_3$ and related materials in the bulk form. Second, the magnetic characterizations on bulk Lu$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$FeO$_3$ demonstrate a magnetic anomaly (probable antiferromagnetic ordering) above room temperature, $\sim425-445$ K, followed by magnetic transitions in low temperatures ($\sim167-172$ K). In addition, a magnetoelectric response is observed in the low temperature region. Our study provides useful information on the multiferroic physics of hexagonal $R$FeO$_3$ and related systems.

Uniformly locally univalent harmonic mappings

The primary aim of this paper is to characterize the uniformly locally univalent harmonic mappings in the unit disk. Then, we obtain sharp distortion, growth and covering theorems for one parameter family ${\mathcal B}_{H}(λ)$ of uniformly locally univalent harmonic mappings. Finally, we show that the subclass of $k$-quasiconformal harmonic mappings in ${\mathcal B}_{H}(λ)$ and the class ${\mathcal B}_{H}(λ)$ are contained in the Hardy space of a specific exponent depending on the $λ$, respectively, and we also discuss the growth of coefficients for harmonic mappings in ${\mathcal B}_{H}(λ)$.

The Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS). III. A census of Lyα Emission at $z\gtrsim$7 from HST Spectroscopy

[abbreviated] We present a census of Lyα emission at $z\gtrsim7$ utilizing deep near infrared HST grism spectroscopy from the first six completed clusters of the Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS). In 24/159 photometrically selected galaxies we detect emission lines consistent with Lyα in the GLASS spectra. Based on the distribution of signal-to-noise ratios and on simulations we expect the completeness and the purity of the sample to be 40-100% and 60-90%, respectively. For the objects without detected emission lines we show that the observed (not corrected for lensing magnification) 1$σ$ flux limits reaches $5\times10^{-18}$erg/s/cm$^{2}$ per position angle over the full wavelength range of GLASS (0.8-1.7$μ$m). Based on the conditional probability of Lyα emission measured from the ground at $z\sim7$ we would have expected 12-18 Lyα emitters. This is consistent with the number of detections, within the uncertainties, confirming the drop in Lyα emission with respect to $z\sim6$. These candidates include a promising source at $z=8.1$. The spatial extent of Lyα in a deep stack of the most convincing Lyα emitters with $\langle z\rangle=7.2$ is consistent with that of the rest-frame UV continuum. Extended Ly$α$ emission, if present, has a surface brightness below our detection limit, consistent with the properties of lower redshift comparison samples. From the stack we estimate upper limits on rest-frame UV emission line ratios and find $f_\textrm{CIV} / f_\textrm{Ly$α$} \lesssim 0.32$ and $f_\textrm{CIII]} / f_\textrm{Ly$α$} \lesssim 0.23$ in good agreement with other values published in the literature.

The Bellerophon state: a novel coherent phase of globally coupled oscillators

From rhythmic physiological processes to the collective behaviors of technological and natural networks, coherent phases of interacting oscillators are the foundation of the events' coordination leading a system to behave cooperatively. We unveil the existence of a new of such states, occurring in globally coupled nonidentical oscillators in the proximity of the point where the transition from the system's incoherent to coherent phase converts from explosive to continuous. In such a state, oscillators form quantized clusters, where they are neither phase- nor frequency-locked. Oscillators' instantaneous speeds are different within the clusters, but they form a characteristic cusped pattern and, more importantly, they behave periodically in time so that their average values are the same. Given its intrinsic specular nature with respect to the recently introduced Chimera states, the phase is termed the {\it Bellerophon} state. We provide analytical and numerical description of the microscopic and macroscopic details of {\it Bellerophon} states, thus furnishing practical hints on how to seek for the new phase in a variety of experimental and natural systems.

The Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS). I. Survey overview and first data release

We give an overview of the Grism Lens Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS), a large Hubble Space Telescope program aimed at obtaining grism spectroscopy of the fields of ten massive clusters of galaxies at redshift z=0.308-0.686, including the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF). The Wide Field Camera 3 yields near infrared spectra of the cluster cores, covering the wavelength range 0.81-1.69mum through grisms G102 and G141, while the Advanced Camera for Surveys in parallel mode provides G800L spectra of the infall regions of the clusters. The WFC3 spectra are taken at two almost orthogonal position angles in order to minimize the effects of confusion. After summarizing the scientific drivers of GLASS, we describe the sample selection as well as the observing strategy and data processing pipeline. We then utilize MACSJ0717.5+3745, a HFF cluster and the first one observed by GLASS, to illustrate the data quality and the high-level data products. Each spectrum brighter than H_AB=23 is visually inspected by at least two co-authors and a redshift is measured when sufficient information is present in the spectra. Furthermore, we conducted a thorough search for emission lines through all the GLASS WFC3 spectra with the aim of measuring redshifts for sources with continuum fainter than H_AB=23. We provide a catalog of 139 emission-line based spectroscopic redshifts for extragalactic sources, including three new redshifts of multiple image systems (one probable, two tentative). In addition to the data itself we also release software tools that are helpful to navigate the data.

The Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS). IV. Mass reconstruction of the lensing cluster Abell 2744 from frontier field imaging and GLASS spectroscopy

We present a strong and weak lensing reconstruction of the massive cluster Abell 2744, the first cluster for which deep Hubble Frontier Field (HFF) images and spectroscopy from the Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS) are available. By performing a targeted search for emission lines in multiply imaged sources using the GLASS spectra, we obtain 5 high-confidence spectroscopic redshifts and 2 tentative ones. We confirm 1 strongly lensed system by detecting the same emission lines in all 3 multiple images. We also search for additional line emitters blindly and use the full GLASS spectroscopic catalog to test reliability of photometric redshifts for faint line emitters. We see a reasonable agreement between our photometric and spectroscopic redshift measurements, when including nebular emission in photometric redshift estimations. We introduce a stringent procedure to identify only secure multiple image sets based on colors, morphology, and spectroscopy. By combining 7 multiple image systems with secure spectroscopic redshifts (at 5 distinct redshift planes) with 18 multiple image systems with secure photometric redshifts, we reconstruct the gravitational potential of the cluster pixellated on an adaptive grid, using a total of 72 images. The resulting mass map is compared with a stellar mass map obtained from the deep Spitzer Frontier Fields data to study the relative distribution of stars and dark matter in the cluster. We find that the stellar to total mass ratio varies substantially across the cluster field, suggesting that stars do not trace exactly the total mass in this interacting system. The maps of convergence, shear, and magnification are made available in the standard HFF format.

Transverse electron momentum distribution in tunneling and over the barrier ionization by laser pulses with varying ellipticity

We study transverse electron momentum distribution (TEMD) in strong field atomic ionization driven by laser pulses with varying ellipticity. We show, both experimentally and theoretically, that the TEMD in the tunneling and over the barrier ionization regimes evolves in a qualitatively different way when the ellipticity parameter describing polarization state of the driving laser pulse increases.

Isotope effect in tunnelling ionization of neutral hydrogen molecules

It has been recently predicted theoretically that due to nuclear motion light and heavy hydrogen molecules exposed to strong electric field should exhibit substantially different tunneling ionization rates (O.I. Tolstikhin, H.J. Worner and T. Morishita, Phys. Rev. A 87, 041401(R) (2013) [1]). We studied that isotope effect experimentally by measuring relative ionization yields for each species in a mixed H2/D2 gas jet interacting with intense femtosecond laser pulses. In a reaction microscope apparatus we detected ionic fragments from all contributing channels (single ionization, dissociation, and sequential double ionization) and determined the ratio of total single ionization yields for H2 and D2. The measured ratio agrees quantitatively with the prediction of the generalized weak-field asymptotic theory in an apparent failure of the frozen-nuclei approximation.

Dual Fano and Lorentzian line profile poperties of autoionizing states

Ott et al. (Science (340, 716 (2013)) successfully transferred Fano profile into Lorentzian lineshape using an intense infrared laser, after excitation of autoionizing states in helium by attosecond XUV pulse. This is a very important step forward of quantum phase control. However, here we show experimentally that an autoionizing state can have both Fano and Lorentzian behavior naturally, depending on the process involved. This study utilized the inverse process of photon absorption ionization, i.e. electron ion recombination with photon emission, making sure the resonant autoionizing state is not perturbed by the laser fields. Our result implies that excitation of the state through different paths can lead to different Fano profiles for the same resonant state. This allows more options for the combination of laser fields and lead to more opportunities for quantum phase control. Our result also indicates the breakdown of the classical two step picture for dielectronic recombination.

Massive stars exploding in a He-rich circumstellar medium. IV. Transitional Type Ibn Supernovae

We present ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared data of the Type Ibn supernovae (SNe) 2010al and 2011hw. SN 2010al reaches an absolute magnitude at peak of M(R) = -18.86 +- 0.21. Its early light curve shows similarities with normal SNe Ib, with a rise to maximum slower than most SNe Ibn. The spectra are dominated by a blue continuum at early stages, with narrow P-Cygni He I lines indicating the presence of a slow-moving, He-rich circumstellar medium. At later epochs the spectra well match those of the prototypical SN Ibn 2006jc, although the broader lines suggest that a significant amount of He was still present in the stellar envelope at the time of the explosion. SN 2011hw is somewhat different. It was discovered after the first maximum, but the light curve shows a double-peak. The absolute magnitude at discovery is similar to that of the second peak (M(R) = -18.59 +- 0.25), and slightly fainter than the average of SNe Ibn. Though the spectra of SN 2011hw are similar to those of SN 2006jc, coronal lines and narrow Balmer lines are cleary detected. This indicates substantial interaction of the SN ejecta with He-rich, but not H-free, circumstellar material. The spectra of SN 2011hw suggest that it is a transitional SN Ibn/IIn event similar to SN 2005la. While for SN 2010al the spectro-photometric evolution favours a H-deprived Wolf-Rayet progenitor (of WN-type), we agree with the conclusion of Smith et al. (2012) that the precursor of SN 2011hw was likely in transition from a luminous blue variable to an early Wolf-Rayet (Ofpe/WN9) stage.

The Knee of the Cosmic Hydrogen and Helium Spectrum below 1 PeV Measured by ARGO-YBJ and a Cherenkov Telescope of LHAASO

The measurement of cosmic ray energy spectra, in particular for individual species, is an essential approach in finding their origin. Locating the "knees" of the spectra is an important part of the approach and has yet to be achieved. Here we report a measurement of the mixed Hydrogen and Helium spectrum using the combination of the ARGO-YBJ experiment and of a prototype Cherenkov telescope for the LHAASO experiment. A knee feature at 640+/-87 TeV, with a clear steepening of the spectrum, is observed. This gives fundamental inputs to galactic cosmic ray acceleration models.

Quantum dynamics of CO-H$_2$ in full dimensionality

Accurate rate coefficients for molecular vibrational transitions due to collisions with H$_2$, critical for interpreting infrared astronomical observations, are lacking for most molecules. Quantum calculations are the primary source of such data, but reliable values that consider all internal degrees of freedom of the collision complex have only been reported for H$_2$-H$_2$ due to the difficulty of the computations. Here we present essentially exact full-dimensional dynamics computations for rovibrational quenching of CO due to H$_2$ impact. Using a high-level six-dimensional potential surface, time-independent scattering calculations, within a full angular-momentum-coupling formulation, were performed for the deexcitation of vibrationally excited CO. Agreement with experimentally-determined results confirms the accuracy of the potential and scattering computations, representing the largest of such calculations performed to date. This investigation advances computational quantum dynamics studies representing initial steps toward obtaining CO-H$_2$ rovibrational quenching data needed for astrophysical modeling.

A Rotational Pressure-Correction Scheme for Incompressible Two-Phase Flows with Open Boundaries

Two-phase outflows refer to situations where the interface formed between two immiscible incompressible fluids passes through open portions of the domain boundary. We present in this paper several new forms of open boundary conditions for two-phase outflow simulations within the phase field framework. In addition, we also present a rotational pressure-correction based algorithm for numerically treating these open boundary conditions. Our algorithm gives rise to linear algebraic systems for the velocity and the pressure that involve only constant and time-independent coefficient matrices after discretization, despite the variable density and variable viscosity of the two-phase mixture. By comparing simulation results with the theory and the experimental data, we show that the method developed herein produces physically accurate results. We also present numerical experiments to demonstrate the long-term stability of the method in situations where large density contrast, large viscosity contrast, and backflows are present at the two-phase outflow/open boundaries.

Kondo effect in a novel 5d quasi-skutterudite Yb3Os4Ge13

We report the crystal growth of a new compound, Yb3Os4Ge13, by using a Bi-flux method. X-ray diffraction measurement shows that it crystallizes in the quasi-skutterudite-type caged structure with a cubic space group of Pm-3n (No. 223). Magnetic measurements reveal almost fully localized Yb f-moments above 120 K. The resistivity exhibits a crossover from metallic to insulating behavior with a logarithmic increase below ~ 40 K. The specific heat coefficient shows a rapid upturn below ~5 K and exceeds 2 J mol-1 K-2 at 2 K. Our experimental analysis and electronic band structure calculations demonstrate that Yb3Os4Ge13 exhibits the Kondo effect due to strong hybridization of the localized Yb f-moments with the p-electrons of the surrounding Ge-cages.

Most Convex Functions Have Unique Minimizers

Finding the minimum and the minimizers of convex functions has been of primary concern in convex analysis since its conception. It is well-known that if a convex function has a minimum, then that minimum is global. The minimizers, however, may not be unique. There are certain subclasses, such as strictly convex functions, that do have unique minimizers when the minimum exists, but other subclasses, such as constant functions, that do not. This paper addresses the question of how many convex functions have unique minimizers. We show, using Baire category theory, that the set of proximal mappings of convex functions that have a unique fixed point is generic. Consequently, the set of classes of convex functions that have unique minimizers is generic.

Spectral Efficiency of the Cellular Two-Way Relaying with Large Antenna Arrays

This paper considers a multiuser cellular two-way relay network (cTWRN) where multiple users exchange information with a base station (BS) via a relay station (RS). Each user is equipped with a single antenna, while both the BS and the RS are equipped with a very large antenna array. We investigate the performance of the cTWRN with amplify-and-forward (AF) based physical-layer network coding, and derive closed-form expression for the asymptotic spectral efficiency when both the number of antennas at the BS and the RS grow large. It is shown that the noise propagation of the non-regenerative relaying protocol can be greatly suppressed, and the AF relaying scheme can approach the cut-set bound under certain conditions. We also investigate the performance of the AF relaying scheme under two power-scaling cases, and show that the transmit power of the BS and each user can be made inversely proportional to the number of relay antennas while maintaining a given quality-of-service. Numerical results are presented to verify the analytical results.
