Parameter estimation with limited access of measurements

Quantum parameter estimation holds the promise of quantum technologies, in which physical parameters can be measured with much greater precision than what is achieved with classical technologies. However, how to obtain a best precision when the optimal measurement is not accessible is still an open problem. In this work, we present a theoretical framework to explore the parameter estimation with limited access of measurements by analyzing the effect of non-optimal measurement on the estimation precision. We define a quantity to characterize the effect and illustrate how to optimize observables to attain a bound with limited accessibility of observables. On the other side, we introduce the minimum Euclidean distance to quantify the difference between an observable and the optimal ones in terms of Frobenius norm and find that the measurement with a shorter distance to the optimal ones benefits the estimation. Two examples are presented to show our theory. In the first, we analyze the effect of non-optimal measurement on the estimation precision of the transition frequency for a driven qubit. While in the second example, we consider a bipartite system, in which one of them is measurement inaccessible. To be specific, we take a toy model, the NV-center in diamond as the bipartite system, where the NV-center electronic spin interacts with a single nucleus via the dipole-dipole interaction. We achieve a precise estimation for the nuclear Larmor frequency by optimizing only the observables of the electronic spin. In these two examples, the minimum Euclidean distance between an observable and the optimal ones is analyzed and the results show that the observable closed to the optimal ones better the estimation precision.

Control of quantum coherence of photons exploiting quantum entanglement

Accurately controlling the quantum coherence of photons is pivotal for their applications in quantum sensing and quantum imaging. Here, we propose the utilization of quantum entanglement and local phase manipulation techniques to control the higher-order quantum coherence of photons. By engineering the spatially varying phases in the transverse plane, we can precisely manipulate the spatial structure of the second-order coherence function of entangled photon pairs without changing the photon intensity distribution of each photon. Our approach can readily be extended to higher-order quantum coherence control. These results could potentially stimulate new experimental research and applications of optical quantum coherence.

Robust transitionless quantum driving: Concatenated approach

We propose a concatenated approach for implementing transitionless quantum driving regardless of adiabatic conditions while being robustness with respect to all kinds of systematic errors induced by pulse duration, pulse amplitude, detunings, and Stark shift, etc. The current approach is particularly efficient for all time-dependent pulses with arbitrary shape, and only the phase differences between pulses is required to properly modulate. The simple physical implementation without the help of pulse shaping techniques or extra pulses makes this approach quite universal and provides a different avenue for robust quantum control by the time-dependent Hamiltonian.

Exponentially enhanced gravitationally induced entanglement between quantum systems with a two-phonon drive

Finding a feasible protocol for probing the quantum nature of gravity has been attracting an increasing amount of attention. In this manuscript, we propose a protocol to enhance the detection of gravitationally induced entanglement by exploiting the two-phonon drive in a hybrid quantum setup. We consider the setup consisting of a test particle in a double-well potential, a qubit and a quantum mediator. There is gravitational interaction between the test particle and the mediator, and a spin-phonon coupling between the mediator and the qubit. By introducing a two-phonon drive, the entanglement between the TP and the qubit are significantly enhanced and the entanglement generation rate is remarkably increased compared with the case without the two-phonon drive. Moreover, the entanglement between the TP and the qubit can be partially preserved in the presence of dephasing by the proposed strategy. This work would open a different avenue for experimental detection of the quantum nature of gravity, which could find applications in quantum information science.

Enhancing the sensitivity of nonlinearity sensors through homodyne detection in dissipatively coupled systems

In this manuscript, we propose a new sensing mechanism to enhance the sensitivity of a quantum system to nonlinearities by homodyning the amplitude quadrature of the cavity field. The system consists of two dissipatively coupled cavity modes, one of which is subject to single- and two-photon drives. In the regime of low two-photon driving strength, the spectrum of the system acquires a real spectral singularity. We find that this singularity is very sensitive to the two-photon drive and nonlinearity of the system, and compared to the previous nonlinearity sensor, the proposed sensor achieves an unprecedented sensitivity around the singularity point. Moreover, the scheme is robust against fabrication imperfections. This work would open a new avenue for quantum sensors, which could find applications in many fields, such as the precise measurement and quantum metrology.

Effective dynamics and quantum state engineering by periodic kicks

We study the kick dynamics of periodically driven quantum systems, and provide a timeindependent effective Hamiltonian with the analytical form to reasonably describe the effective dynamics in a long timescale. It is shown that the effective coupling strength can be much larger than the coupling strength of the original system in some parameter regions, which stems from the zero time duration of kicks. Furthermore, different regimes can be transformed from and to each other in the same three-level system by only modulating the period of periodic kicks. In particular, the population of excited states can be selectively suppressed in periodic kicks, benefiting from the large detuning regime of the original system. Finally, some applications and physical implementation of periodic kicks are demonstrated in quantum systems. Those unique features would make periodic kicks becoming a powerful tool for quantum state engineering.

The driven-Markovian master equation based on the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants theory

We derive a Markovian master equation for driven open quantum systems based on the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants theory, which is available for arbitrary driving protocols. The role of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants is to help us bypass the time-ordering obstacle in expanding the propagator of the free dynamics, such that the Lindblad operators in our driven-Markovian master equation can be determined easily. We also illustrate that, for the driven open quantum systems, the spontaneous emission and the thermal excitation induce the transitions between eigenstates of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant, but not the system Hamiltonian's. As an example, we present the driven-Markovian master equation for a driven two-level system coupled to a heat reservoir. By comparing to the exactly solvable models, the availability of the driven-Markovian master equation is verified. Meanwhile, the adiabatic limit and inertial limit of the driven-Markovian master equation are also discussed, which result in the same Markovian master equations as those presented before in the corresponding limits.

Effect of quantum jumps on non-Hermitian system

One among the possible realizations of non-Hermitian systems is based on open quantum systems by omitting quantum jumping terms in the master equation. This is a good approximation at short times where the effects of quantum jumps can be ignored. However, the jumps can affect the long time dynamics of the system, motivating us to take the jumps into account in these studies. In this paper, by treating the quantum jumps as perturbations, we examine the effect of the quantum jumps on the non-Hermitian system. For this purpose, we first derive an effective Hamiltonian to describe the dynamics of the open quantum system based on the master equation, then expand the eigenstates and eigenenergies up to the first and second order in the quantum jumps. Finally, we apply our theory to a dissipative two-level system and dissipative fermionic superfluids. The effect of quantum jump on the dynamics and the nonequilibrium phase transition is demonstrated and discussed.

Giant atom induced zero modes and localization in the nonreciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain

A notable feature of non-Hermitian systems with skin effects is the sensitivity of their spectra and eigenstates to the boundary conditions. In the literature, three types of boundary conditions-periodic boundary condition, open boundary condition and a defect in the system as a boundary, are explored. In this work we introduce the other type of boundary condition provided by a giant atom. The giant atom couples to a nonreciprocal SuSchrieffer-Heeger chain at two points and plays the role of defects. We study the spectrum and localization of eigenstates of the system and find that the giant atom can induce asymmetric zero modes. A remarkable feature is that bulk states might localize at the left or the right chain-atom coupling sites in weak localization regimes. This bipolar localization leads to Bloch-like states, even though translational invariance is broken. Moreover, we find that the localization is obviously weaker than the case with two small atoms or open boundary conditions even in strong coupling regimes. These intriguing results indicate that nonlocal coupling of giant atom to a nonreciprocal SSH chain weakens localization of the eigenstates. We also show that the Lyapunov exponent in the long-time dynamics in real space can act as a witness of the localized bulk states.

Quantum imaging exploiting twisted photon pairs

Quantum correlation of two-photon states has been utilized to suppress the environmental noise in imaging down to the single-photon level. However, the size of the coherence area of photon pairs limits the applications of quantum imaging based on spatial correlations. Here, we propose a quantum imaging scheme exploiting twisted photon pairs with tunable spatial-correlation regions to circumvent this limitation. We employ a bulk-density coincidence to enhance the imaging signal. Specifically, we introduce a re-scaled image signal, which is immune to the background intensity distribution profile of the photon pulse. We reveal a destructive interference between the anti-bunched photon pair and bunched photon pair in the imaging process. Our work could pave a way for twisted-photon-based quantum holography and quantum microscopy.

Response of open two-band systems to a momentum-carrying single-mode quantized field

As a new quantum state, topological insulators have become the focus of condensed matter and material science. The open system research of topological insulators has aroused the interest of many researchers. Recently, many aspects, especially experimental aspects, have been developed rapidly, such as prediction and discovery of many novel quantum effects and applications of topological properties of new materials, but the theoretical research is slightly tough. In this paper, we study the response of topological insulator driven by momentum-carrying single-mode field. We solve the ground state of the system after the addition of a single mode light field with adjustable photon momentum. Specifically, We show that from the analytical solution of hall conductance compared with the closed system, there is an extra correction term, and hall conductance can no longer be expressed in terms of the chern number or the weighted sum of the chern number. Furthermore, the topological properties are analyzed and discussed through the results of different instance with their illustration. Such as, the phase transition point of topological phase is robust to the environment, and the system still has topological phase transition. It is expected to be realized or controlled by experiments, and our observations may contribute to its application and extension in condensed matter physics and quantum statistical physics.

Bloch band structures and linear response theory of nonlinear systems

We investigate the Bloch bands and develop a linear response theory for nonlinear systems, where the interplay between topological parameters and nonlinearity leads to new band structures. The nonlinear system under consideration is described by the Qi-Wu-Zhang model with Kerr-type nonlinearity, which can be treated as a nonlinear version of Chern insulator. We explore the eigenenergies of the Hamiltonian and discuss its Bloch band structures as well as the condition of gap closing. A cone structure in the ground Bloch band and tubed structure in the excited Bloch band is found. We also numerically calculate the linear response of the nonlinear Chern insulator to external fields, finding that these new band structures break the condition of adiabatic evolution and make the linear response not quantized. This feature of response can be understood by examining the dynamics of the nonlinear system.

Decoherences-protected implementation of quantum gates

We present a scheme to implement a universal set of quantum gates based on achievable interactions, and the gates can be protected against decoherences through dynamical-decoupling approach without encoding. By properly designing system evolutions, the desired system interactions commute with the elements forming dynamical decoupling pulses. Thus, the effect of decoherences can be eliminated by repeatedly applying the pulses, without noticeably affecting the system evolutions governed by the desired system interactions given small enough time interval between pulses. Moreover, due to the commutation between the elements forming the pulses and the desired system interactions, our scheme is resistant to different types of decoherences, and so not limited to specific decoherences. Our scheme also works well in the case that the desired system interactions cannot be achieved ideally due to imperfect control of system parameters, through the action of dynamical-decoupling pulses.

Localization-enhanced dissipation in a generalized Aubry-André-Harper model coupled with Ohmic baths

In this work, the exact dynamics of excitation in the generalized Aubry-André-Harper model coupled with an Ohmic-type environment is discussed by evaluating the survival probability and inverse participation ratio of the state of system. In contrast to the common belief that localization will preserve the information of the initial state in the system against dissipation into the environment, our study found that strong localization can enhance the dissipation of quantum information instead. By a thorough examination of the dynamics, we show that the coherent transition between the energy state of system is crucial for understanding this unusual behavior. Under this circumstance, the coupling induced energy exchange between the system and its environment can induce the periodic population of excitation on the states of system. As a result, the stable or localization-enhanced decaying of excitation can be observed, dependent on the energy difference between the states of system. This point is verified in further by checking the varying of dynamics of excitation in the system when the coupling between the system and environment is more strong.

Controlled unidirectional reflectionlessness by coupling strength in a non-Hermitian waveguide quantum electrodynamics system

Unidirectional reflectionlessness is investigated in a waveguide quantum electrodynamics system that consists of a cavity and a $Λ$-type three-level quantum dot coupled to a one-dimensional plasmonic waveguide. Analytical expressions of transmission and reflection coefficients are derived and discussed for both resonant and off-resonant couplings. By appropriately modulating the coupling strength, phase shift and Rabi frequency, unidirectional reflectionlessness is observed at the exceptional points. And unidirectional coherent perfect absorption is exhibited at the vicinity of exceptional point. These results might find applications in designing quantum devices of photons, such as optical switches and single-photon transistors.

Counterdiabatic driving for pseudo- and antipseudo- Hermitian systems

In this work, we study the counterdiabatic driving scheme in pseudo- and antipseudo- Hermitian systems. By discussing the adiabatic condition for non-Hermitian system, we show that the adiabatic evolution of state can only be realized in the non-Hermitian system which possesses real energy spectrum. Therefore, the counterdiabatic driving scheme to reproduce an exact evolution of an energy eigenstate needs either real energy spectrum or dropping its parts of dynamic phase and Berry phase. In this sense, we derive the adiabatic conditions and counterdiabatic driving Hamiltonians for the pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian which possesses either real or complex energy spectrum and the antipseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian which possesses either imaginary or complex energy spectrum. We also find the condition to get self-normalized energy eigenstates in pseudo- and antipseudo- Hermitian system and derive the well-defined population of bare states on this energy eigenstate. Our results are illustrated by studying the counterdiabatic driving for a non-Hermitian three level system, and a perfect population transfer with loss or gain is realized.

Dynamics Reflect Gapless Edge Modes for Topological Superconductor

We focus on the dynamical feature for a $p$-wave superconductor model in different parameter regions in terms of the appearance of gapless edge modes in reel geometry. Firstly, we show the parameter region with gapless edge modes versus a parameter and quasi-momentum. The parameter diagram can be reflected by the expectations of Pauli matrices in global manners. In another view, the dynamical feature of the excitation behave differently in the parameter regions with topological gapless edge modes and not. And the cusps of dynamical return rate vanish as the parameter pass the boundary in the parameter region slowly enough. It is found that the dynamics in the parameter region with gapless edge modes behaves differently to that without edge modes and related mostly to the eigenenergy gap between the pre-and post-quench eigenstates. The cusps of the dynamical return rate behave robustly against the noise in the lattice until localization behavior dominates. This work benefits detecting topological edge modes by dynamical manners.

Composite pulses for high fidelity population transfer in three-level systems

In this work, we propose a composite pulses scheme by modulating phases to achieve high fidelity population transfer in three-level systems. To circumvent the obstacle that not enough variables are exploited to eliminate the systematic errors in the transition probability, we put forward a cost function to find the optimal value. The cost function is independently constructed either in ensuring an accurate population of the target state, or in suppressing the population of the leakage state, or both of them. The results demonstrate that population transfer is implemented with high fidelity even when existing the deviations in the coupling coefficients. Furthermore, our composite pulses scheme can be extensible to arbitrarily long pulse sequences. As an example, we employ the composite pulses sequence for achieving the three-atom singlet state in an atom-cavity system with ultrahigh fidelity. The final singlet state shows robustness against deviations and is not seriously affected by waveform distortions. Also, the singlet state maintains a high fidelity under the decoherence environment.
