Radiative deflection by spin effect in the quantum radiation-reaction regime

The colliding between ultra-relativistic electrons and an ultra-intense laser pulse is a powerful approach to testify the physics in strong-field QED regime. By considering spin-dependent radiation-reaction during laser-electron collision we find anti-symmetric deflection of electrons with different spin states. We revealed that such deflection is induced by the non-zero work done by radiation-reaction force along field polarization-direction in a half-period of phase, which is larger for spin-anti-paralleled electrons and smaller for spin-paralleled electrons. The spin-projection on the magnetic field of an electron gets inversed in adjacent half-periods due to oscillating magnetic field and therefore the deflection due to spin-dependent radiation is accumulated rather than vanishing. The new mechanism provides an extra dimension to observe quantum radiation-reaction effect in the strong-field QED regime by measuring the anti-symmetric distribution.

Current jetting distorted planar Hall effect in a Weyl semimetal with ultrahigh mobility

A giant planar Hall effect (PHE) and anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) is observed in TaP, a nonmagnetic Weyl semimetal with ultrahigh mobility. The perpendicular resistivity (i.e., the planar magnetic field applied normal to the current) far exceeds the zero-field resistivity, which thus rules out the possible origin of negative longitudinal magnetoresistance. The giant PHE/AMR is finally attributed to the large anisotropic orbital magnetoresistance that stems from the ultrahigh mobility. Furthermore, the mobility-enhanced current jetting effects are found to strongly deform the line shape of the curves, and their evolution with the changing magnetic field and temperature is also studied. Although the giant PHE/AMR suggests promising applications in spintronics, the enhanced current jetting shows the other side of the coin, which needs to be considered in the future device design.

Origin of planar Hall effect in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2

Besides the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (MR), planar Hall effect (PHE) is a newly emerging experimental tool to test the chiral anomaly or nontrivial Berry curvature in Weyl semimetals (WSMs). However, the origins of PHE in various systems are not fully distinguished and understood. Here we perform a systematic study on the PHE and anisotropic MR (AMR) of Td-MoTe2, a type-II WSM. Although the PHE and AMR curves can be well fitted by the theoretical formulas, we demonstrate that the anisotropic resistivity arises from the orbital MR (OMR), instead of the negative MR as expected in the chiral anomaly effect. In contrast, the absence of negative MR indicates that the large OMR dominates over the chiral anomaly effect. This explains why it is difficult to measure negative MR in type-II WSMs. We argue that the measured PHE can be related with the chiral anomaly only when the negative MR is simultaneously observed.

Non-stoichiometry effects on the extreme magnetoresistance in Weyl semimetal WTe2

Non-stoichiometry effect on the extreme magnetoresistance is systematically investigated for the Weyl semimetal WTe2. Magnetoresistance and Hall resistivity are measured for the as-grown samples with a slight difference in Te vacancies and the annealed samples with increased Te vacancies. The fittings to a two-carrier model show that the magnetoresistance is strongly dependent on the residual resistivity ratio (i.e., the degree of non-stoichiometry), which is eventually understood in terms of electron doping which not only breaks the balance between electron-type and hole-type carrier densities but also reduces the average carrier mobility. Thus, compensation effect and ultrahigh mobility are probably the main driving force of the extreme magnetoresistance in WTe2.

Reorthonormalization of Chebyshev matrix product states for dynamical correlation functions

The Chebyshev expansion offers a numerically efficient and easy-implement algorithm for evaluating dynamic correlation functions using matrix product states (MPS). In this approach, each recursively generated Chebyshev vector is approximately represented by an MPS. However, the recurrence relations of Chebyshev polynomials are broken by the approximation, leading to an error which is accumulated with the increase of the order of expansion. Here we propose a reorthonormalization approach to remove this error introduced in the loss of orthogonality of the Chebyshev polynomials. Our approach, as illustrated by comparison with the exact results for the one-dimensional XY and Heisenberg models, improves significantly the accuracy in the calculation of dynamical correlation functions.

Kondo-like phonon scattering in thermoelectric clathrates

Crystalline solids are generally known as excellent heat conductors, amorphous materials or glasses as thermal insulators. It has thus come as a surprise that certain crystal structures defy this paradigm. A prominent example are type-I clathrates and other materials with guest-host structures. They sustain low-energy Einstein-like modes in their phonon spectra, but are also prone to various types of disorder and phonon-electron scattering and thus the mechanism responsible for their ultralow thermal conductivities has remained elusive. While recent ab initio lattice dynamics simulations show that the Einstein-like modes enhance phonon-phonon Umklapp scattering, they reproduce experimental data only at low temperatures. Here we show that a new effect, an "all phononic Kondo effect", can resolve this discrepancy. This is evidenced by our thermodynamic and transport measurements on various clathrate single crystal series and their comparison with ab initio simulations. Our new understanding devises design strategies to further suppress the thermal conductivity of clathrates and other related materials classes, with relevance for the field of thermoelectric waste heat recovery but also more generally for phononic applications. More fundamentally, it may trigger theoretical work on strong correlation effects in phonon systems.

First measurement of unpolarized SIDIS cross section and cross section ratios from a $^3$He target

The unpolarized semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) differential cross sections in $^3$He($e,e^{\prime}π^{\pm}$)$X$ have been measured for the first time in Jefferson Lab experiment E06-010 performed with a $5.9\,$GeV $e^-$ beam on a $^3$He target. The experiment focuses on the valence quark region, covering a kinematic range $0.12 < x_{bj} < 0.45$, $1 < Q^2 < 4 \, \textrm{(GeV/c)}^2$, $0.45 < z_{h} < 0.65$, and $0.05 < P_t < 0.55 \, \textrm{GeV/c}$. The extracted SIDIS differential cross sections of $π^{\pm}$ production are compared with existing phenomenological models while the $^3$He nucleus approximated as two protons and one neutron in a plane wave picture, in multi-dimensional bins. Within the experimental uncertainties, the azimuthal modulations of the cross sections are found to be consistent with zero.

JLab Measurements of the 3He Form Factors at Large Momentum Transfers

The charge and magnetic form factors, FC and FM, of 3He have been extracted in the kinematic range 25 fm-2 < Q2 < 61 fm-2 from elastic electron scattering by detecting 3He recoil nuclei and electrons in coincidence with the High Resolution Spectrometers of the Hall A Facility at Jefferson Lab. The measurements are indicative of a second diffraction minimum for the magnetic form factor, which was predicted in the Q2 range of this experiment, and of a continuing diffractive structure for the charge form factor. The data are in qualitative agreement with theoretical calculations based on realistic interactions and accurate methods to solve the three-body nuclear problem.

A Search for the LHCb Charmed 'Pentaquark' using Photo-Production of $J/ψ$ at Threshold in Hall C at Jefferson Lab

We propose to measure the photo-production cross section of $J/ψ$ near threshold, in search of the recently observed LHCb hidden-charm resonances $P_c$(4380) and $P_c$(4450) consistent with 'pentaquarks'. The observation of these resonances in photo-production will provide strong evidence of the true resonance nature of the LHCb states, distinguishing them from kinematic enhancements. A bremsstrahlung photon beam produced with an 11 GeV electron beam at CEBAF covers the energy range of $J/ψ$ production from the threshold photo-production energy of 8.2 GeV, to an energy beyond the presumed $P_c$(4450) resonance. The experiment will be carried out in Hall C at Jefferson Lab using a 50μA electron beam incident on a 9% copper radiator. The resulting photon beam passes through a 15 cm liquid hydrogen target, producing $J/ψ$ mesons through a diffractive process in the $t$-channel, or through a resonant process in the $s$- and $u$-channel. The decay $e^+e^-$ pair of the $J/ψ$ will be detected in coincidence using the two high-momentum spectrometers of Hall C. The spectrometer settings have been optimized to distinguish the resonant $s$- and $u$-channel production from the diffractive $t$-channel $J/ψ$ production. The $s$- and $u$-channel production of the charmed 5-quark resonance dominates the $t$-distribution at large $t$. The momentum and angular resolution of the spectrometers is sufficient to observe a clear resonance enhancement in the total cross section and $t$-distribution. We request a total of 11 days of beam time with 9 days to carry the main experiment and 2 days to acquire the needed $t$-channel elastic $J/ψ$ production data for a calibration measurement. This calibration measurement in itself will greatly enhance our knowledge of $t$-channel elastic $J/ψ$ production near threshold.

Measurements of $d_{2}^{n}$ and $A_{1}^{n}$: Probing the neutron spin structure

We report on the results of the E06-014 experiment performed at Jefferson Lab in Hall A, where a precision measurement of the twist-3 matrix element $d_2$ of the neutron ($d_{2}^{n}$) was conducted. This quantity represents the average color Lorentz force a struck quark experiences in a deep inelastic electron scattering event off a neutron due to its interaction with the hadronizing remnants. This color force was determined from a linear combination of the third moments of the spin structure functions $g_1$ and $g_2$ on $^{3}$He after nuclear corrections had been applied to these moments. The kinematics included two average $Q^{2}$ bins of $3.2$ GeV$^{2}$ and $4.3$ GeV$^{2}$, and Bjorken-$x$ $0.25 \leq x \leq 0.90$ covering the DIS and resonance regions. We found $d_2^n$ to be small and negative for $ = 3.2$ GeV$^{2}$, and smaller for $ = 4.3$ GeV$^{2}$, consistent with a lattice QCD calculation. The twist-4 matrix element $f_{2}^{n}$ was extracted by combining our $d_{2}^{n}$ with the world data on $Γ_{1}^{n} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{n} dx$. We found $f_{2}^{n}$ to be roughly an order of magnitude larger than $d_{2}^{n}$. Utilizing the extracted $d_{2}^{n}$ and $f_{2}^{n}$ data, we separated the color force into its electric and magnetic components, $F_{E}^{y,n}$ and $F_{B}^{y,n}$, and found them to be equal and opposite in magnitude, in agreement with instanton model predictions but not with those from QCD sum rules. Additionally, we have extracted the neutron virtual photon-nucleon asymmetry $A_{1}^{n}$, the structure function ratio $g_{1}^{n}/F_{1}^{n}$, and the quark ratios $(Δu + Δ\bar{u})/(u + \bar{u})$ and $(Δd + Δ\bar{d})/(d + \bar{d})$. These results were found to be consistent with DIS world data and with the prediction of the constituent quark model but at odds with those of perturbative QCD at large $x$.

Measurement of the Doubly-Polarized $\vec{{^3}He}(\vecγ,n)pp$ Reaction at 16.5 MeV and Its Implications for the GDH Sum Rule

We report new measurements of the doubly-polarized photodisintegration of $^3$He at an incident photon energy of 16.5 MeV, carried out at the High Intensity $γ$-ray Source (HI$γ$S) facility located at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The spin-dependent double-differential cross sections and the contribution from the three--body channel to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) integrand were extracted and compared with the state-of-the-art three--body calculations. The calculations, which include the Coulomb interaction and are in good agreement with the results of previous measurements at 12.8 and 14.7 MeV, can no longer describe the cross section results at 16.5 MeV. The GDH integrand was found to be about one standard deviation larger than the maximum value predicted by the theories.

A Precision Measurement of the Neutron Twist-3 Matrix Element $d_2^n$: Probing Color Forces

Double-spin asymmetries and absolute cross sections were measured at large Bjorken $x$ (0.25 $ \le x \le $ 0.90), in both the deep-inelastic and resonance regions, by scattering longitudinally polarized electrons at beam energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV from a transversely and longitudinally polarized $^3$He target. In this dedicated experiment, the spin structure function $g_2$ on $^3$He was determined with precision at large $x$, and the neutron twist-three matrix element $d_2^n$ was measured at $\left< Q^2\right>$ of 3.21 and 4.32 GeV$^2$/$c^2$, with an absolute precision of about $10^{-5}$. Our results are found to be in agreement with lattice QCD calculations and resolve the disagreement found with previous data at $\left< Q^2\right> =$ 5 GeV$^2$/$c^2$. Combining $d_2^n$ and a newly extracted twist-four matrix element, $f_2^n$, the average neutron color electric and magnetic forces were extracted and found to be of opposite sign and about 30 MeV/fm in magnitude.

JLab Measurement of the $^4$He Charge Form Factor at Large Momentum Transfers

The charge form factor of $^$4He has been extracted in the range 29 fm$^{-2}$ $\le Q^2 \le 77$ fm$^{-2}$ from elastic electron scattering, detecting $^4$He nuclei and electrons in coincidence with the High Resolution Spectrometers of the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Lab. The results are in qualitative agreement with realistic meson-nucleon theoretical calculations. The data have uncovered a second diffraction minimum, which was predicted in the $Q^2$ range of this experiment, and rule out conclusively long-standing predictions of dimensional scaling of high-energy amplitudes using quark counting.

Thermoelectric properties of Ba-Cu-Si clathrates

Thermoelectric properties of the type-I clathrates Ba$_8$Cu$_x$Si$_{46-x}$ ($3.6 \leq x \leq 7$, $x$ = nominal Cu content) are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The polycrystalline samples are prepared either by melting, ball milling and hot pressing or by melt spinning, hand milling and hot pressing techniques. Temperature-dependent electrical resistivity, $ρ(T)$, and the Seebeck coefficient, $S(T)$, measurements reveal metal-like behavior for all samples. For $x = 5$ and 6, density functional theory calculations are performed for deriving the enthalpy of formation and the electronic structure which is exploited for the calculation of Seebeck coefficients and conductivity within Boltzmann's transport theory. For simulating the properties of doped clathrates the rigid band model is applied. On the basis of the density functional theory results the experimentally observed compositional dependence of $ρ(T)$ and $S(T)$ of the whole sample series is analyzed. The highest dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit $ZT$ of 0.28 is reached for a melt-spun sample at $600^{\circ}$C. The relatively low $ZT$ values in this system are attributed to the too high charge carrier concentrations.

Low Q^2 measurements of the proton form factor ratio $mu_p G_E / G_M$

We present an updated extraction of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio, mu_p G_E/G_M, at low Q^2. The form factors are sensitive to the spatial distribution of the proton, and precise measurements can be used to constrain models of the proton. An improved selection of the elastic events and reduced background contributions yielded a small systematic reduction in the ratio mu_p G_E/G_M compared to the original analysis.

Polarization Observables in Deuteron Photodisintegration below 360 MeV

High precision measurements of induced and transferred recoil proton polarization in d(polarized gamma, polarized p})n have been performed for photon energies of 277--357 MeV and theta_cm = 20 degrees -- 120 degrees. The measurements were motivated by a longstanding discrepancy between meson-baryon model calculations and data at higher energies. At the low energies of this experiment, theory continues to fail to reproduce the data, indicating that either something is missing in the calculations and/or there is a problem with the accuracy of the nucleon-nucleon potential being used.

Hard Photodisintegration of a Proton Pair

We present a study of high energy photodisintegration of proton-pairs through the gamma + 3He -> p+p+n channel. Photon energies from 0.8 to 4.7 GeV were used in kinematics corresponding to a proton pair with high relative momentum and a neutron nearly at rest. The s-11 scaling of the cross section, as predicted by the constituent counting rule for two nucleon photodisintegration, was observed for the first time. The onset of the scaling is at a higher energy and the cross section is significantly lower than for deuteron (pn pair) photodisintegration. For photon energies below the scaling region, the scaled cross section was found to present a strong energy-dependent structure not observed in deuteron photodisintegration.
