Experimental NMR Realization of A Generalized Quantum Search Algorithm

A generalized quantum search algorithm, where phase inversions for the marked state and the prepared state are replaced by $π/2$ phase rotations, is realized in a 2-qubit NMR heteronuclear system. The quantum algorithm searches a marked state with a smaller step compared to standard Grover algorithm. Phase matching requirement in quantum searching is demonstrated by comparing it with another generalized algorithm where the two phase rotations are $π/2$ and $3π/2$ respectively. Pulse sequences which include non 90 degree pulses are given.

Top-quark rare decay $t\to c h$ in R-parity-violating SUSY

The flavor-changing top-quark decay $t\to c h$, where $h$ is the lightest CP-even Higgs boson in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, is examined in the R-parity-violating supersymmetric model. Within the existing bounds on the relevant R-parity-violating couplings, the branching fraction for $t\to c h$ can be as large as about $10^{-5}$ in some part of the parameter space.

Non-Thermal Production of WIMPs and the Sub-Galactic Structure of the Universe

There is increasing evidence that conventional cold dark matter (CDM) models lead to conflicts between observations and numerical simulations of dark matter halos on sub-galactic scales. Spergel and Steinhardt showed that if the CDM is strongly self-interacting, then the conflicts disappear. However, the assumption of strong self-interaction would rule out the favored candidates for CDM, namely weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), such as the neutralino. In this paper we propose a mechanism of non-thermal production of WIMPs and study its implications on the power spectrum. We find that the non-vanishing velocity of the WIMPs suppresses the power spectrum on small scales compared to what it obtained in the conventional CDM model. Our results show that, in this context, WIMPs as candidates for dark matter can work well both on large scales and on sub-galactic scales.

Probing For New Physics In J/$Ψ$ Decays

Beijing Spectrometer (BES) at Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC), IHEP has accumulated 2.5 $\times 10^7$ J/$Ψ$ and plans to increase the number to $10^8 \sim 10^9$ in the near future. In this paper I review and summarize the recent studies on the possibilities of probing for new physics at BES. This includes the theoretical works on and experimental attempt performed at BES in searching for flavor changing neutral current, CP violation and lepton flavor violation in the processes of J/$Ψ$ decays.

Effects of anomalous couplings of the tau lepton

The dimension-six CP-conserving $SU_L(2)\times U_Y(1)$ invariant operators involving the tau lepton are studied. It leads to the new physics effects to the lepton flavor violation (LFV) and lepton flavor-changing neutral current(FCNC). With the available experimental data on the decays $Z \to τ^+ + τ^- $, $Z\to μ^+ + μ^- $ and $μ^- \to e^- +γ$, the constraints on parameters of the effective lagrangian can be given. According to such constraints, the branching ratio of the decay $Z\to μ^\pm + τ^\mp $ could reach to $10^{-6}-10^{-7}$. The size of the LFV effects depends crucially on the dynamics of the lepton mass generation. Assuming the lepton mass matrices in the form of a Fritzsch ansatz, we point out that the experiment on $μ\to e γ$ will put stronger limits on the anomalous magnitic and electric dipole moments of the tau lepton than obtained by Escribano and Massó.

Effects Of Kaluza-Klein Excited W On Single Top Quark Production At Tevatron

In extra dimension theories if the gauge bosons of the standard model propagate in the bulk of the extra dimensions then they will have Kaluza-Klein excitations that can couple to the standard model fermions. In this paper we study the effects of the first excited Kaluza-Klein mode of the W on single top production at the Tevatron. We find that the cross section for the single top production can be significantly reduced if the mass of the first Kaluza-Klein excited $W \sim 1$ TeV. Hence, a measurement of the single top production cross section smaller than the standard model prediction would not necessarily imply $V_{tb} <1$ or evidence of extra generation(s) of fermions mixed with the third generation.

Anomalous field-dependent specific heat in charge-ordered Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ and La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$

We report low temperature specific heat measurements of Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ ($0.3\leq x \leq 0.5$) and La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ with and without applied magnetic field. An excess specific heat, $C^{\prime}(T)$, of non-magnetic origin associated with charge ordering is found for all the samples. A magnetic field sufficient to induce the transition from the charge-ordered state to the ferromagnetic metallic state does not completely remove the $C^{\prime}$ contribution. This suggests that the charge ordering is not completely destroyed by a "melting" magnetic field. In addition, the specific heat of the Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ compounds exhibit a large contribution linear in temperature ($γT$) originating from magnetic and charge disorder.

Energy Estimation of UHE Cosmic Rays using the Atmospheric Fluorescence Technique

We use the CORSIKA air shower simulation program to review the method for assigning energies to ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic rays viewed with the air fluorescence technique. This technique uses the atmosphere as a calorimeter, and we determine the corrections that must be made to the calorimetric energy to yield the primary cosmic ray energy.

$e^+e^- \to t \bar t H$ with Non-standard Higgs Boson Couplings

We consider a general effective Lagrangian for couplings of a Higgs boson to the top-quark to dimension-six operators including CP violation effects. Constraints on some of them are derived from the $Z\to b\bar b$ data. We study the process $e^+e^- \to t\bar t H$ to probe the non-standard couplings. We find that at a linear collider with a c. m. energy $\sqrt s \sim 0.5-1.5$ TeV and a high luminosity of 10-1000 fb$^{-1}$, these non-standard couplings may be sensitively probed.

Non-thermal Production of Neutralino Cold Dark Matter from Cosmic String Decays

We propose a mechanism of nonthermal production of a neutralino cold dark matter particle, $χ$, from the decay of cosmic strings which form from the spontaneous breaking of a U(1) gauge symmetry, such as $U_{B-L}(1)$, in an extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). By explicit calculation, we point out that with a symmetry breaking scale $η$ of around $10^8$ GeV, the decay of cosmic strings can give rise to $Ω_χ\simeq 1$. This gives a new constraint on supersymmetric models. For example, the dark matter produced from strings will overclose the universe if $η$ is near the electroweak symmetry breaking scale. To be consistent with $Ω_χ\leq 1$, the mass of the new U(1) gauge boson must be much larger than the Fermi scale which makes it unobservable in upcoming accelerator experiments. In a supersymmetric model with an extra $U_{B-L}(1)$ symmetry, the requirement of $Ω_χ\leq 1$ puts an upper bound on the neutrino mass of about $30 eV$ provided neutrino masses are generated by the see-saw mechanism.

The infrared and optical variability of OJ 287

In this paper, the long-term historical optical (UBVRI) and near-infrared (JHK) data are presented with some new observations in the optical (February 1994-January 1995) and near-infrared (November 1995) bands included for BL Lac object OJ287. The new optical data in V-band are in agreement with the results reported by other authors (Sillanpaa et al. 1996a; Arimoto et al. 1997), a close correlation between the color index of B-V and the magnitude V has been obtained from our new observations; The new infrared observations presented here indicate that the source was at a high level in the infrared band during the observation period; From the available literature, we have got that the largest variations for UBVRIJHK bands are respectively: 4.72mag, 5.93mag, 5.18mag, 4.45mag, 4.07mag, 3.87mag, 3.78mag, and 3.54mag. A strong correlation is found between the optical and near-infrared bands when the DCF method is used, which suggests that these two bands have the same emission mechanism.

Single Top Quark Production via FCNC Couplings at Hadron Colliders

We calculate single top-quark production at hadron colliders via the chromo-magnetic flavor-changing neutral current couplings $\bar tcg$ and $\bar tug$. We find that the strength for the anomalous $\bar tcg$ ($\bar tug$) coupling may be probed to $κ_c / Λ= 0.092 {TeV}^{-1}$ ($κ_u / Λ= 0.026 {TeV}^{-1}$) at the Tevatron with $2 {fb}^{-1}$ of data and $κ_c / Λ= 0.013 {TeV}^{-1}$ ($κ_u / Λ= 0.0061 {TeV}^{-1}$) at the LHC with $10 {fb}^{-1}$ of data. The two couplings may be distinguished by a comparision of the single top signal with the direct top and top decay signals for these couplings.

Probing top quark decay into light stop in the supersymmetric standard model at the upgraded Tevatron

We investigate the possibility of observing the exotic decay mode of the top quark into the lightest stop ($\tilde t_1$) and neutralino ($\tildeχ^0_1$) in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with R-parity at the upgraded Tevatron. First we determine the allowed range for the branching fraction $B(t\to \tilde t_1 \tildeχ^0_1)$ in the region of parameter space allowed by the $R_b$ data and the CDF $eeγγ+{\large \not} E_T$ event, and then consider all possible backgrounds and investigate the possibility of observing this final state at the Tevatron. We find that this final state is unobservable at Run 1. However, Run 2 can provide significant information on this new decay mode of the top quark: either discover it, or establish a strong constraint on the masses of $\tilde t_1$ and $\tildeχ^0_1$ given approximately by $M_{\tilde χ^0_1} > M_{\tilde t_1} - 6$ GeV.

Single top quark production as a probe of R-parity-violating SUSY at pp and p\bar p colliders

We investigate the ability of single top quark production via qq'-> squark->tb and q \bar q'->slepton->t\bar b at the LHC and Tevatron to probe the strength of R-parity violating couplings in the minimal supersymmetric model. We found that given the existing bounds on R-parity violating couplings, single top quark production may be greatly enhanced over that predicted by the standard model, and that both colliders can either discover R-parity violating SUSY or set strong constraints on the relevant R-parity violating couplings. We further found that the LHC is much more powerful than the Tevatron in probing the squark couplings, but the two colliders have comparable sensitivity for the slepton couplings.

R-parity-violating SUSY effects and signals in single top production at the Tevatron

We discuss single top quark production via u^i+\bar d^j \to t+\bar b at the Fermilab Tevatron in the minimal supersymmetric model with R-parity violation. We find that within the allowed range of coupling constants, the lepton-number violating couplings can give rise to observable effects when the slepton mass lies in a specific narrow range. For the baryon-number violating couplings, the contribution to the production rate can be quite large in the presently allowed range of the coupling constants. We show that the measurement of single top production at the upgraded Tevatron can be used to constrain a linear combination of products of the R-parity violating couplings.

b b-bar Production on the Z Resonance and Implications for LEP2

In terms of an effective lagrangian, we examine the effect of new physics associated with third-generation fermions on b b-bar production at the Z resonance and study its implications for LEP2. We obtain the constraints on such operators with derivative couplings at LEP1 and the SLC, and determine the prospects for detecting their presence at LEP2. We find that despite the small observed deviations from the standard model on the Z resonance, much larger deviations from standard model predictions are possible at LEP2, and the corresponding couplings can be determined rather precisely.

Dimension-six CP-conserving operators of the third-family quarks and their effects on collider observables

We list all possible dimension-six CP-conserving $SU_c(3)\times SU_L(2) \times U_Y(1)$ invariant operators involving the third-family quarks which could be generated by new physics at a higher scale. Expressions for these operators after electroweak gauge symmetry breaking and the induced effective couplings $Wt\bar b$, $Xb\bar b$ and $Xt\bar t$ $( X=Z,γ,g,H)$ are presented. Analytic expressions for the tree level contributions of all these operators to the observables $R_b$ and $A^b_{FB}$ at LEP I, $σ(e^+e^-\rightarrow b\bar b)$ and $A^b_{FB}$ at LEP II, $σ(e^+e^-\rightarrow t\bar t)$ and $A_{FB}^t$ at the NLC, as well as $σ(p\bar p\rightarrow t\bar b+X)$ at the Tevatron upgrade, are provided. The effects of these operators on different electroweak observables are discussed and numerical examples presented. Numerical analyses show that in the coupling region allowed by $R_b$ and $A^b_{FB}$ at LEP I, some of the new physics operators can still have significant contributions at LEP II, the Tevatron and the NLC.
